It Begins in Germany, Could it end in Germany?? Theo travels but isn't he Suspended??

Here we are again at the start of a new Champions League campaign having been able to navigate past a tricky Udinese side. This time however the expectations for us to win the tournament are much lower after the summer we just had. We have lost players with vast experience in this competition and only time will tell how the likes of Arteta and Gervinho will fare in what will be their debut season in the competition.

First up we face the reigning German Champions Borussia Dortmund.

Being a fan of the Bundesliga I can say they were absolutely brilliant last season but what made their triumph even more special was the fact that they were on the verge of bankruptcy just a few years back. They appointed Jurgen Klopp as their manager whose philosophy is very similar to Arsene’s and he won the league title with a team that had an average age of 22 years. Their style of play is very similar to ours in that they like to keep the ball and are very dynamic in attack, again like us, they play the 4-2-3-1 formation.

With that being said who makes Dortmund tick?

Over the summer we were continuously linked to their German protégé Mario Goetze who notched up 17 assists last season. For those who have not seen him in action he plays on the right of their attack cutting in from the wing. Some quarters have gone as far as to say as he is very similar to Messi, whoever plays on our left will have their hands full, he is very dangerous.

Despite Goetze’s talents Dortmund have had to cope with the loss of Nuri Sahin who was their midfield general much like Fabregas was for us. They replaced him with Gundogan who has yet to hit the heights Sahin did.

Their defence is rock solid especially in the central positions, they have Hummels and Subotic in there who are absolute monsters. Subotic is the most aggressive of the pair much like Vermaelen for us with Hummels sweeping up behind him.

We should also be on the lookout for their left back Schmelzer who also had an excellent breakout season last year and I believe we will  have our work cut out if we are to score today.

Things have not been rosy for Dortmund so far this season, their start to the league campaign has been poor.

They sit 11th after 5 games but we shouldn’t underestimate them, they will be highly motivated for this game. Today we’ll play at the Signal Iduna Park which is the biggest capacity stadium in Germany and can hold a maximum of 80552 fans and Dortmund boast some of the best attendances in Europe.

I expect the crowd to be rocking from the onset and we’ll need our experienced players such as Mertesacker, Robin and Sagna to provide cool heads tomorrow, I can assure you the atmosphere will be intimidating.

Enough about them for now.

Here’s the  travelling squad:

Andrey Arshavin
Mikel Arteta
Yossi Benayoun
Marouane Chamakh
Johan Djourou
Gervinho
Kieran Gibbs
Lukasz Fabianski
Emmanuel Frimpong
Laurent Koscielny
Per Mertesacker
Ju Young Park
Andre Santos
Bacary Sagna
Alex Song
Wojciech Szczesny
Robin van Persie
Theo Walcott

Walcott travelling to Germany is a mystery, he received a yellow card in both fixtures against Udinese so should he not be suspended for tonights fixture?

Arsene Wenger is for sure, he will have to watch this one from the stands courtesy of a 2 match ban imposed on him by UEFA.

We have not had a good start to the season so far but all is not lost, our victory over Swansea had some positives to build up on.

With the return of Gervinho we can only hope that our attack improves, against Swansea we lacked off the ball movement up front which Gervinho provides and our midfield will be much stronger with Song in there.

Let’s hope the extra few days of training have helped our new players bed in more as today is a massive game for us. A win tonight will give our players a big boost of confidence that will help us build momentum to put our season back on track.  A draw won’t be the worst result but we must avoid losing.

It will be difficult to get a result  it Germany but it can be done, our players just have to believe they can win and to give it their best shot.

Regulars on this blog know that Dortmund are my second favourite team but today it’s all about Arsenal. We may be outsiders to win the Champions League but anything can happen in football as Liverpool in their triumph in Istanbul proved.

Let the long European journey to Munich begin and wouldn’t it be spooky if we ended up back in Germany in May 2012.

Well wouldn’t it??

Morning all, good read Kt, I know they are your second team but i hope we spank them….

Personally though I think a draw would be a good result against a tough, quality German side….

We’ll see tonight exactly what this current squad has in them, looking forward to it too…

  2. K-TR7 says:

I really hope we win rico.as i’ve mentioned in my post its all about us today.i wouldn’t mind them finishing 2nd 😉

  3. rico says:

We all do Kt but they have some quality players, strong ones too – we will really have to raise our game to get anything in Germany…

  4. rico says:

TT – i’d take a draw right now, that’s not me being negative 😉

Hi Lee – I think we will know after tonight just what our side is made of and how we fare against one of the toughest oppos, barca may be full of flair, but this german side is one of the best (according to Merts) 😉

Wish we could get the definative on Theo….

  5. UpTheArse says:

Tonight’s game is going to be very interesting, not seen dortmund play for years but all the sounds point to them being a very good side and by all accounts they have to be favourites for our group having won the Bundesliga last year which is pretty impressive. A result here would really lift everyone, players and fans, lets hope the Arsenal lads are up for it. This team:
    Chezzer
    Sagna Mert Kos Gibbs/Santos
    Arteta Song Benay
    Theo/Gerv Gerv/Arsh
    RVP
should be good enough to get a result over there, bearing in mind a draw would be a result. I’m just glad that I am finally looking forward to arsenal games again.
    COYG!!!!

@rico – what do u mean by definative? Theo injured?

  6. rico says:

    Hi UTA

Not injured, Theo received a yellow card in both Udinese fixtures, according to the UEFA rules, he should be suspended for tonight, but he’s in the squad…

  7. rico says:

That’s just what we were asking yesterday, i don’t know the answer but i guess it must be no, surely arsenal would know if they did…

but on the night of the away fixture, SS’s when doing the commentary siad he would be suspended following the second yellow…

    bizarre…

  8. rico says:

That counts out starting with AA then – i think we could see Frimpong and Song start…. Frimpong can help out Gibbs…

    It worked in Udinese

  9. K-TR7 says:

Rico Dortmund were unwilling to do any business according to Grimandi.Götze said he doesn’t want to leave Germany right now as he thinks thats best for his career.he also lives with his parents.

  10. K-TR7 says:

I fear in the future that we’ll be priced out of a move despite him stating his admiration for our club and style of play 🙁

  11. TT says:

By the time he is redy to go Man shitty will offer 50 mil + and price any one out of the race. Ditto with Hazard I’m afraid. As for to night I agree i would start with Song and Pong in the middle with Arteta infront. But wHat about benny instead of Walcott for added defencive cover, he has often played out right and put our new Brazilian infront of Gibbs to attack theyr fullback and help Gibbs out when needed. Put AA there and Gibbs will be far more exsposed.

  12. rico says:

TT, or, another option would be to play Santos at LB with Gibbs ahead of him, both are good at going forward and both of them should be able to snuff out BD right hand side of play…

  13. Pj says:

feels good 2 see positive comments from the funs!!the transfere window realy tested our faith,bt im glad its over and with the win against swansea i cn say our season hs just began n wat better way 2 build on that momentum than geting a result 2day.

  14. K-TR7 says:

What i would like to know is why we aren’t getting more out of our most naturally gifted player in AA.he could easily be our creative lynchpin as he has the tools to do it.as i saw someone else put it,if you could pump vermy’s enthusiasm into AA’s veins you would have a world beater.despite his attitude he managed 10 goals and 18 assists last season.imagine what he could do if he played at 100% throughout the season…

  15. rico says:

Kt – Do you think Wenger has played AA in the wrong position, I do – he’s no more a winger than Theo so why does he play him there?

Now he’s lost confidence but, signs of it coming back were there on saturday but he’s so hit and miss ….

  16. K-TR7 says:

Rico right now we can’t have a definitive answer since AA has yet to play as our trequartista yet.however, according to heatmaps AA’s average position against swansea was in the middle behind rvp and theo.this is because gibbs did a good job of owning the wing.i also think thats the plan.in addition to santos we can have our left flank be our main attacking channel and our right slightly defensive.

  17. Steve says:

After the farce of the Udinese match I wouldn’t put it past dopey Wenger getting us disqualified by including a suspended player.

  18. Lee says:

Arsenal Football Club has today announced that Henri Lansbury has signed a contract extension with the Club.

The 20-year-old midfielder, currently on loan with Championship side West Ham United, has reaffirmed his future to the Gunners after signing an extension to the contract he originally penned in December 2009.

The Enfield-born youngster featured twice for Arsenal this term before sealing a season-long move to Upton Park on transfer deadline day. Lansbury got off to a flying start with the Hammers at the weekend, netting on his debut as Sam Allardyce’s side defeated Portsmouth 4-3.

An England Under-21 international, he featured in this summer’s European Championships in Denmark and scored for the Three Lions in their recent 4-1 qualifying victory over Israel. He has also captained his country at Under-19 and Under-16 level.

  19. kay boa says:

am also a fan of bundesliga n I have watched dem play they veri offensive n dangerous wit gotze, kagawa n da rest gunners shud b on da look out 4 something serious

  20. K-TR7 says:

Lee i wouldn’t read much into it.we may be doing it to get a transfer fee for him next summer if we were to sell him.

  21. W.A.T.H says:

    Nice write up KT,
They a top top side play very good footie and have some very talented players….

watch out for their left back 😉

    Afternoon all……

  22. Joaquim Moreira says:

    Hello!
Today a draw or a win is great in the sport level; a win is better in the sport, financial and confidence level. Don’t forget we play with German winner team and one the most importanta clubs in Bundesliga with a always, a big crown in his stadium.
Here, we have 4 matches broadcasting at the same time; Dortmund-Arsenal; Porto-Schacktar;Barcelona-Milan and Chelsea-Leverkusen. Difficult to choose a match to follow and obtain an agreement arround the tv set…
Walcott needs to rest. He must be ready next saturday.

  23. W.A.T.H says:

As u well know KT he was on my list of players “2buy” in the summer….!.

Any kind of result tonight will be good….! Can’t see us winning though, wenger won’t be flexible he’ll stick on up front and we’ll battle to create…. We now have speedy players and yet we won’t play them in a way that they’ll hurt the opposition…!

  24. K-TR7 says:

If we can get AA into the Euro 08 form when he was running European powerhouses like Holland ragged we could easily make the top 3.

  25. K-TR7 says:

The reason rvp is so isolated is because fab left.we have no one from midfield who can make those runs to support him.AA is the only player that i can see doing it but its a risky ploy considering his lack of stamina.he is the most gifted player we have on our books, hand over the keys of our ferrari and let him drive ;)dfield who can make those runs to support him.AA is the only player that i can see doing it but its a risky ploy considering his lack of stamina.he is the most gifted player we have on our books, hand over the keys of our ferrari and let him drive 😉

  26. W.A.T.H says:

KT, I think the whole formation is a joke it’s neither 4-3-3 nor does it make the most of the players that we have, RVP is isolated die to the supposed wing players not actually playing as wingers and wenger tried co compensate for a weak spine by making sure they always drop deep…! doesnt work but mr stubborn wont change and he’s far to inflexible to see what needs to be done..! his comment on smaller technical players says it all, were the invincibles small and technical..????

  27. K-TR7 says:

Wenger doesn’t like players taller than him wath 😉 mertsacker is an exception since when a German speaks you listen 😉

  28. K-TR7 says:

I still feel the 4-3-3 can be our best formation.its just that we don’t seem to have grasped how to fully utilise it.if we are to play a forward line of Theo/rvp/Gerv with AA behind them it looks good on paper but can it really work?

  29. Vinay says:

A win here can go a long way in setting the season back on track. If winning at udinese was a relief a win here maybe the accelerator needed to kick of the campaign actually. Arsenal need to understand the first 20 minutes of each half is crucial, keep them quiet and you are in the game. Dortmund have very good players but so do we and for once i hope we can play Theo upfront and have RVP playing behind him. Theo on wings is a joke, he has no idea on what to do.A gunners win and we can say all is well.

  30. gunner says:

boys the rule is arsenal can choose WHEN theo will do his suspension the rule applies if you get two yellows in qualification you may choose to do the suspension anytime throughout the groupstage i just looked it up on the net

  31. oliver says:

morning all…we have what is probably the toughest match in the group up first, so if we can get a win tonight, we’ll be off to a good start…

theo is in the squad and there has been no discussion of a suspension, so i have to believe i got it wrong, despite discussion of a suspsension right after the second leg in udinese…

  32. oliver says:

i see where he got a new deal – is arsene serious about making lansbury part of the first team squad, or is this to “protect our investment”? i am not sure…

    good write, k…

  33. TT says:

LOl you can choose when to serve the suspesion? waht a stupid rule. you are suspended as a phunisment so allowing you to decide when you serve is like convicting you of a burglary but you can postpone it until the nights get brighter and buissness goes down….

  34. rico says:

Hi gunner, i find that a strange ruling too….

Hi oliver, that thought crossed my mind too about Henri but I’m not sure the player would sign on if he didn’t believe he was part of our future – he could get himself a bigger wage on a freebie.

I am quietly confident he is part of our future and that’s why Wenger bought two ‘old’ midfielders rather than a player in his early 20’s…

  35. oliver says:

wow…choose to serve the suspension…i am not in anyway disputing that is accurate gooner, but it sounds quite strange – we have enough dead rubber matches in this competition, allowing teams to choose when their players are suspended will add to it…

still, i shan’t complain – since this is the rule, the club is absolutely correct to use it to our advantage…

hopefully he will stay on, ricco…its only a single year extension, but its better than just letting him walk.

  36. W.A.T.H says:

Maybe wenger will realise that Henri is an asset with another year under his belt in the championship !?!?!?! then again think I am with Oliver it’s a means to get a decent price for him when we sell him next summer…!

  37. oliver says:

all things equal, i would really like to see the young man get his chance here at arsenal…and by getting his chance, i don’t mean being thrust in to the starting eleven and told to do the heavy lifting. i mean staying at the club, staying in the squad, and gradually being worked in, alongside our experienced players, where he can learn and eventually step up. his time at west ham should be a big help in his development, but he will need to play alongise our best players to improve in our style of play.

this is probably not the time for such a discussion, but next week we have the league cup tie versus the shrews…i hope to see arsene depart from his wholsale change strategy of last year. i think we were poorly served by lumping all our second stringers in with the token starter or two – the stuttering performance and mixed results were not particuarly pleasant…this time, i hope to see arsene start no more than four squad/youth players (one will be fabianski, who desperately needs the minutes) integrated into an otherwise strong squad, with situation-dependent changes to bring further squad/youth players on later in the match. this will give several of our non-starters an opportunity for quality minutes and experience, learning alongside some of our best players, while maintaining a semblance of a strong squad. in theory, it should work better than last season’s mass changes. under that concept, the performances generally stunk, the results weren’t much better, and the youth/squad players we wanted to give minutes to didn’t do well when we needed them to play first team minutes…

as always, we’ll have some players who need rest, and others injured/suspended…but we should still be able to put a decent mix out there, not a shadow side.

  38. W.A.T.H says:

Agree with you on the CC side Oliver, bring the young ones through a few at a time with experienced players around them to help them through and help them mature and get better not burden them all with thrown in and sink or swim mentality far to much pressure around the club at the moment to do that with to many young ones all at once.

  39. oliver says:

start those three forwards – or two of the three – versus the shrews. include two first-team regulars who have had a few recent matches off (song, gerv) and perhaps miquel or jd at the back and fabianski and the rest of the starters unchanges, with further squad/youth integration as the match progresses…

we’re allotted three subs a match; circumstances usually dictate where/when arsene makes some substitutions. but i think there are plenty of situations where we can bring a squad player on for some minutes in the first team without an adverse effect on the result. this season we have usually been on the back foot and have had to chase matches or hold what we have (swans), but i am hoping that things will improve and we’ll be able to perhaps start making at least one sub a match for the purpose of giving a squad/youth player some quality minutes alongside our first team players…i think the opportunity is there perhaps more than we recognize it.

miyaichi is back in training, as i understand…

  40. oliver says:

if miyaichi comes through tonight ok, there may be an opportunity for him to make his debut at ewood – not start, but if we play well and have a decent lead going into the final third, perhaps bring him on…

if we are level or trailing, i would not want to call on him to be our saviour. let him make his competitive bow in circumstances where he is not expected to save us.

  41. oliver says:

k, that is a bit too many changes for me. i would prefer to see fab, bac, kos, miquel, (whomever does not start tonight from santos/gibbs), song, benayoun, frim, gerv, miyaichi, and oc…

three subs, if circumstances allow us to make them, with gervinho, frim and then kos the players to make way…situation dependent, of course…

  42. oliver says:

i wouldn’t start ozyakup just yet…we have players in the squad that need minutes more than him…the match is a week away and i am going under the premise that neither ramsey or rosicky will yet be available…if either/both of them are, then ramsey/rosicky in for frim, to be substituted late on, if the situation allows…

  43. oliver says:

ricco, you should have been here last week…constant, pouring rain, virtually without break, for a solid four-day spell…

  44. K-TR7 says:

The are rumours we failed in a bid to sign jovetic on deadline day 🙁 he is such a good player and its such a shame injuries have stunted his development ever since he lit up the CL 2 seasons ago…

  45. rico says:

Hi rocastle, you lost me back then 😉

Lee – yep, agree, that would be AW all over but this is one young gun who needs to be given his chance, after all, D&D have had enough but then i know you know that 😉

oliver – went out earlier, was going to give the woofa a lovely run, skies were blue and the sun was lovely – get to the common and the heavens opened for ages… Came home, blue skies, got the washing on the line, black clouds and more rain 🙁 🙁

Four days, seems like we have had it for four months 🙁

  46. oliver says:

but it was four days last week…not counting hurricane irene at the end of august…we’ve generally had a dry summer here, but the past couple of weeks have been wet, to say the least…

  47. rico says:

Was just jesting really oliver, i know you guys have had it tough, especially with Irene, i was glad my brother has moved on from NY…

  48. oliver says:

szczesny, gibbs, mert, kos, bac, song, arteta, benayoun, theo, robin, gerv…

that is what i project our startring eleven tonight…benayoun over frim because i think arsene err….pat will want to go for it early and consolidate later on…if he needs to make attacking changes, i think 23 and 9 will be the first two numbers he calls…

i’ve probably got it completely wrong…

  49. rico says:

agree oliver, and i hope the home fans all have a sore throat and cannot cheer their side on….. 😉

    you able to watch tonight?

  50. oliver says:

i am going to try and sneak glimpses throughout the afternoon…if not, i’ll follow text comment as my situation permits and will watch later…i am dvr’ing it…

i should be good for the match report either way…

  51. rico says:

I didn’t give the report a thought oliver, but thats fab news – thank you – it’s going to be a tough one i fear….

  52. stevepalmer1 says:

Welcome back K-tr7 good info blog,
Those buggers will lose tonight, i can feel it in my water , i predict a gunners win 2.1 but wouldn’t be suprised if we win by more, Arteta and Yosi Ryo and the Gerve Santos show us what you’ve got, no one gives us a chance, just the way i like it. Were an unknown force, and i believe we will shock a few tonight, Pat will have his notepad out with all the scenario’s that might happen, but i believe he won’t have to do to much, Just hope he doesn’t injure himself celebrating. EUFA will be looking for anything to make life that little bit more difficult, but you can’t keep a good team down, although i’m sure they will try.

  53. oliver says:

whatever happens tonight, i don’t think i can over-estimate how important a good start will be. i expect our players to still be a little apprehensive off recent results, so a good start – obviously with at least one goal – will give us something to build upon, and hopefully help us settle and relax. a poor start will add to our woes…

best way is to attack and be direct, while simultanously keeping our shape…no early forays for song, keep it simple and concentrate on breaking attacks up ahead of starting them. defenders need to keep their positions and the forwards need to be direct, without sideways/backwards passing…

oh to have someone who is really good at free kicks/crosses/corners…even when things aren’t working, we still get plenty of dead-ball opportunities. when we are toiling away, struggling to break opposition down, how much of a spark would a free-kick goal, or one off a corner give us? if we had players that were really good at that, those goals alone would probably have made the difference in numerous matches during the past season – even against newcastle and liverpool this season…

robin should be that guy, but he hasn’t been recently…perhaps arteta can…

regardless, we make virtually nothing from those situations these days…those are potential goals that can make a huge difference over the course of the season, yet we don’t appear to even attempt to get more proficient at those situations.

  54. stevepalmer1 says:

Robin needs a rest from corners penalties and free kicks because he’s lost it, Arteta hits it straight at the wall so not him, time for one of the newbies to step up, he couldn’t do any worse than Robins Row Z.And evening Oliver.and ricolicious

  55. rico says:

oliver – we have the player who is good at corners and free kicks in Arteta – he took all the right handed side corners against swansea and they were spot on, that’s why i wonder if wenger will start with chamakh..

dinner calls, back in a short while….

  56. K-TR7 says:

Theo came in for alot of stick after his perfomance against swansea.knowing him expect an immense perfomance from him today.he is usually pretty decent in Europe.

  57. oliver says:

evening steve…i would love to see ramsey develop such a proficiency…i think rosicky has been able to before, and even arsh…

i would be interested to see the stats on our recent conversion rate of dead ball situations; i don’t think it can be good. having someone who is really good at those situations is like having a 12th man in some cases…

  58. oliver says:

another hour to go…i’ll have to keep an on developments in piraeus, as that result may also affect how we view what happens here…

  59. stevepalmer1 says:

Theo frustrates me KT he has all the speed but will not take his man on, he passes back more than a defender, looking forward to seeing Park, may be tonight

  60. oliver says:

szczesny, gibbs, mert, kos, bac, arteta, song, benayoun, theo, robin, gerv…

subs are fab, jd, santos, frim, arsh, park, chamakh…

  61. K-TR7 says:

Theo is trying too hard to dribble past players.sometimes he should just kick the ball past defenders and show them a clean pair of heels 😉 but i must say his close control is improving every day.

  62. rico says:

guys, i have a minging headache, a migraine is heading my way so i’m off up the wooden ones 🙁 🙁

Why on why on a footie night 🙁

    Night all….

  63. oliver says:

i know all about migraines, ricco…all you can do is lay down, close your eyes and wait for it to pass…i used to get ones that would absolutely incapacitate me…

get some rest…i have the report, it will be in your in box later tonight…

  64. oliver says:

great finish and we are halfway there…don’t worry, i don’t think we can continue like this – we are getting overrun in midfield and arteta is particularly disappointing. benayoun has done well, and i think we will see frim at some point to help shore things up…

  65. W.A.T.H says:

Is it me or is Song having a mare… wrong side nearly everytime…. Great finish from Robin though…! His chocolate leg as well 😉

  66. oliver says:

song hasn’t been that bad for me…he has had his sloppy moments, but has also made a couple of good interceptions…kos has struggled, and as a team we have not kept the ball well, or really created any great chances up until robin’s goal…it’s not been pretty – i think we have been pretty well outplayed – but it has been effective…that said, we have a whole second half to go.

  67. stevepalmer1 says:

Lets hope Pat Rice can talk some sence, into them what the fuck are they doing. nobody’s moveing, give the holding player some one to pass too, Gerv is having to go it alone where are they.

  68. oliver says:

at least we got a point out of this…that was a great strike however, and little we could do about it. there shouldn’t be any arsenal bottle nonsense, because our depleted side battled and defended bravely throughout – for once, give credit to the other guys instead of spinning this as an arsenal choke job…

    well done arsenal!

  69. oliver says:

it was a great volley by perisic – absolutely nothing szczesny could do about it…and mert made the clearance, so he is not to blame either – the guy latched on to the ball and sent it right back into our net…just one of those things…we were not pretty and often in danger of being over-run, but we showed a ton of guts out there tonight.

  70. Lee says:

We were 3-1 to win in Germany, we rode our luck and were 6 mins away from big win!!! That was a bloody determined Gunners!!!

  71. goonster says:

Bummer….oh well at least we got a point where no one else gave us a chance. It could have been worse. I was wincing towards the end. Great game by dortmond totally deserve their point. Next up BLACKBURN. God help us!

  72. allezkev says:

Didn’t see any of the game or listen to radio.
But before we kicked off, if someone had offered me 1-1.
I would have said “I’ll take that, thanks”…

  73. allezkev says:

This time next week we’ll hopefully see Miyaichi and Oxlade-Chamberlain tearing into Shrewsbury. I’m quite looking forward to that.

  74. allezkev says:

    Saw the goals on YouTube.
    Robin took his beautifully.
Maybe i’m a bit biased [true] but i thought the Jerries goal had an element of luck about it. If that guy intended to put his shot where it went, then he must be a fantastic player. But i suspect that it was his [lucky] wonder goal of the season, i.e. it could have flown anywhere but just happened to go to the worst possible spot for us.
A good point all the same.
