I’ll Be Sad When Arsene Wenger Leaves. Could Andries Jonker Save Our Season?

Morning all.

I will be, honest. He’s been great for Arsenal FC, he really has but all the greatness he brought to the club, he himself has slowly and painfully unravelled and now we’ve reached an all time low.

Why will I be sad? Because he’s been allowed to almost humiliate himself and Arsenal FC by an ageing, toothless board and an American owner who knows about as much about football as my chickens! They gave him a new contract in the summer and now that decision is backfiring…

He talks a good game, he talks about letting his side dictate the way the game goes and to be fair, on days like Saturday, he’s right but not on the positive side. We were awful, we had no height against a strong and physical side but what made matters worse was the fact that we were actually totally outplayed by Stoke, especially during the first half. Yes, Anthony Taylor had yet another awful game but it wasn’t his fault we conceded three goals.

Are Stoke better than Dortmund? Of course not. Are they better than Southampton? Goodness no, of course not but are they better than West Brom? Debatable when one considers the form of both sides but those I mention we beat, so why we capitulated in such a fashion I don’t know. Well perhaps I do…. Just as I know it wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last..

To be 3-0 down at half-time against a depleted Stoke side has to be the worst yet and it shows that something is seriously wrong, not that most of us needed that to draw such a conclusion.

I personally think it’s time to change many things. Arsene Wenger needs to walk away before it all gets ugly and horrid as I don’t believe he or the fans deserve this pantomime to be played out until the summer and in any case, if by some miracle we get a top four place, whose to say he’ll walk away then?

The entire squad needs an overhaul as it’s nowhere near as good as Arsene Wenger thinks it is but, the biggest thing is the way we play, the way in which we are so easily rolled over and that’s nothing new as sadly as it’s been evident for a few seasons now.

Some believe he should walk away gracefully in the summer, but how will that long and sad walk away be with grace if performances continue to be as they were on Saturday? It won’t, things will just get worse and this pantomime will have a very loud audience. One which won’t be calling for an encore……

So what do fans want from a new manager?

One who will stay put for many a year as long as he’s at the top of his game? Well surely that rules Pep Guardiola out as didn’t he say he’d like one last job after Bayern and then he’s ready to retire?

Jergen Klopp? Well he’s said he has no plans to leave Dortmund so that’s him out of the reckoning.

Diego Simeone – Still very young at just 44 years old but what he did at Atletico Madrid last season was remarkable but that’s just one rosy season so the jury is surely out on him. Mind you, his side are hot on the heels of Barca and Real again this season.

Joachim Löw – He’s one I like. Any manager who can coach his squad just a handful of times during a season yet still win big things is a remarkable feat. For sure he has great players in his squad but he’s still got to get them all working together in a successful way.

We all have own own names we’d like to throw into the pot but wishing for their appointment and expecting them to leave their current positions are two very different things. After all, why would any of those I mention want to leave a successful position they are in right now. Why would they in the summer? Ah, money, yes money talks…..

What about Andries Jonker for the here and now just until the summer?

He’s worked alongside many top managers and a new face with new ideas might just see us raise our game for the second half of the season. No doubt we all read the article in the Mirror which suggested that he’s scrapped all the tippy tappy football in the Academy and he wants to adopt a long ball game and one which presses harder further up the pitch. There has to be a reason for this.

Maybe he’s watched the way we have played over the last 5-8 seasons and has seen how we have failed to beat so many of the clubs around and even below us and perhaps he feels that a change will bring us more joy, maybe more success. Whether it does remains to be seen but it’s clear that the players we have and the way we play right now, won’t.

Whether Andries Jonker is the right man long term is another question which will take time to find out the answer but sadly, what stares us in the face is, Arsene Wenger is not.

That’s it for another day……

The sooner he leaves the better for both parties. He ll get a statue and legendary stats but if he insists on staying it ll get really ugly really fast.

  2. Adam says:

Simeone said recently that he doesn’t want to stay in any job for long. Does that rule him out?
I personally don’t think we need very long-term managers who want to hang around beyond their usefulness. We should surely be looking at the best manager in the world, though opinions may differ on who that is.

  3. rico says:

    Thanks Lee.

Just questions really Adam. Like you, I hope we don’t have another manager who is left to just to exist once his best days are over but I’d hate us to change managers for the sake of it like Roman has done over the years…

  4. goonster says:

Spot on adam…it gets stale after a while. 5 years is pefect. Then move the fuck on. I ll take simeone klopp or loew. They are young vibrant and pragmatic and know how to put maureen in his place. Had enough of that smug bastard. Tired of losing to him.

  5. goonster says:

Jonker can’t be wrong. Arsene has way too much power. Hes holding us back from potential world class status. We should be ripping it. Best staduim in Europe, huge followership and some of the best players around. Wenger is such a control freak he determines who stays in the academy or who leaves. He needs to go. End of.

  6. potter says:

A new manager would have to look at the squad and pare out the ones we don’t need. Then he would have to bring in the bits that we are missing. For instance Joel Campbell to get playing time has to get past Sanchez , The Ox , Walcott and then he has to vie with Gnabry If he goes to the other side there is Ozil , Cazorla , Podolski, with Rosicky and probably Welbeck to get past. Truth is he probably would be better off elsewhere or under a new manager.Podolski no doubt feels the same and Rosicky must be wondering why he is there. We have too many in certain places but not enough in others. Really you want 2 players for every position with a few floaters that can be utility to fill the squad. What is happening to the club and Wenger is truly sad , it’s of their own making and I fear it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

  7. scottfromoz says:

What do we want from a manager, guys?
    What does Stan want?
We need to find common ground, and I reckon that’s a near I possibility, to be honest.
Stan has had his way, and now should either leave or give the fans theirs.

  8. allezkev says:

Maybe the days of any manager, staying 10 or more years at a club, are coming to an end…

It’s what we have been used to, but is it the way to go?

    Great post Rico….

  9. goonster says:

I forsee a clash between the AOBs and AKBs on the terraces soon. Violent clash that is. I’d arsene had any decency left he should leave now before it gets out of hand. No akb ll stand to see wengr get insulted and next time they ll be waiting for the boo boys. What do you guys think ll happen next?? We don’t want no civil war. Wenger out Now.

  10. scottfromoz says:

Kev, probably the best rugby league coach of all time stayed at a club for 3 years and moved on.
He had success everywhere including winning three Premierships in 3 years with one club, and still left.
    Complacency and familiarity creeps in.

  11. Adam says:

If a new manager is successful then he should stay until he isn’t. The Arsenal job is one of the most prestigious in football. There is obviously much to detest about Abramovich but, if he doesn’t think it’s working, he makes the change. Arsenal will never be like that I know, but the impending decision is critical.

  12. allezkev says:

I quite like Simeone, he’s young, yes, but you don’t luckily win any league, so he has to have something….

  13. potter says:

It’s already going off in the streets and it’s only time before it spills onto the terraces so to speak. During the 70’s you got street wise to learn where to avoid trouble with opposing fans but the “”Scarfers “” got protected by their rougher and readier peers. Now however it’s AFC on AFC weird and worrying.

  14. goonster says:

Scott listen to yourself mate…so you condine fans having a go at each other rather than have wenger leave??? Now I ve heard everything.

  15. den says:

Oh if only it were so simple. I assume you’ve managed a football team at some level because you are so knowing. Probably top in the field of industry as well. Easy isn’t it as when wenger goes if next man fails you’ll have another rant and probably say wenger shouldn’t have gone. I’ll be watching and reading with great interest.

  16. goonster says:

But its already happening scott….the impending clash ll be open and violent. Maybe a few lives lost. Is it worth arsene staying? ? AOBs won’t stop the boos and insults they ve tasted blood and won’t let go till he leaves and AKBs won’t stand around and see their dear leader hounded like a dog. Blimey it’s going to get ugly. God help the goonerdom.

  17. tsgh says:

Nothing to add to that fine post.
Someone will be too much of a maverick four our board.
Lowe is an AW disciple and so can’t hack it in thisleague imho… Norman for me.even
before koeman came to this league,Goonie my disagree of course. Lol

  18. goonster says:

Ts I hate koeman yes but wenger more…plus koeman has fresh ideas and younger. Not a mad power grabbing frenchanting turncoat. Koeman ll bring a sense of professionalism back to arsenal. He did a wonderful job at Ajax according to reports. Like someone said yesterday anyone but arsene….even pubis 😀

  19. rogerbij says:

Good thoughts for a comments board Rico. The point of course is – would changing the manager attract better talent, improve team performance and results, and ultimately win more silverware. The honest cold hard truth is that no matter how much one dislikes Wenger, there would be few that couldve done what he has done up to now (first period winning stuff, second period the new stadium, but now the third period trying to win stuff again).

Pep, Simeone, Loew are good names, but there are not buckets of top managers out there, and those would have to leave their current posts. Im only in favour of another top manager coming in – NOT a period of manager roundabouts a la spurs or chelsea. And Im not in favour of doing a hail mary and throwing in Jonker. Top players will not be attracted to that. Just think of the Moyes experiment.

Otherwise, we showed again on the weekend why we need to rebuild from the back, Without Kosh, we look poor dont we!

  20. rico says:

Den, not sure I need to be a top manager and business professional to see what is going wrong with what is going on in relation to the football we are playing. I do believe I even suggested it would be difficult to replace Arsene Wenger with top class managers as they are enjoying good spells with their clubs, Klopp apart of course but I suspect that’s just a blip..

Still, nice to know HH is keeping you reading!

  21. rico says:

Thanks Roger. But how many times do we talk about AW rebuilding?

Last summer he had the chance to finally build a really good and well balanced squad but he didn’t. If he does in January then great but history suggests to me that the chance has gone…

Re Jonker – the only reason I throw his name in is that’s no different to what many clubs do when their manager leaves during a season, a caretaker manager to allow time to get the right man.

Still, as you say, it’s just a post for debate and all the time AW has the full backing of the board and owner, which I suspect is the case, he’s going nowhere….

  22. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Bonjour Apples and Bananas

Good post boss. But a sad one as well.

Its like the last throes of a relationship. Wonderful moments in the past, the odd flicker here and there, but mainly its all going wrong. And the effects are spilling into the external family.

Do I approve of what is turning sour??? Certainly not. But there comes a time for drastic measures if you have to make others see daylight.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. And I agree. The problems arise when blinkers are put on and no one reasons with a reasonable mind.

I saw the game vs Stoke. And while I was appalled by what I saw in the first half I still refused to write and put the boot in to increase what is already a festering situation. Why should I? I prefer to stand back and observe.

I do not approve of fighting between fans. Certainly the stadium is not full only of AKB. It certainly is not full of AOB. I believe that the latter group is on the increase while the former is on the decrease. Fighting should stop. And the AOB and those fans who are beginning to doubt should all refuse to go to home matches. If there are only circa 20,000 fans inside the ground even AW would see that. Yes 61,000 fans paid, but 40,000 refuse to attend. That way even the canteen and food shops inside the ground suffer. And they will complain to those employing them that income has fallen. The Arsenal souvenir shop will suffer as well. The board will notice that. And the sponsor companies shelling out money to AFC will comment as well.

    But not fighting.

Why was I appalled during the first half? Well, as a person who spent countless hours practicing tactical defending I have every right to be appalled. AW is wrong to blame the players. The players do what they do in training. Any where in the world. In an exam you perform exactly as you study. In a drama play you perform exactly as you did during the rehearsals. And in a game you play exactly what you practiced in training.

So AW has only himself to blame for anything that occurred during the game. He cant blame Bould as Steve does what he is told to do.

Unless the players have lost all their faith in AW. Or know something we do not.

In which case the story is different.

  23. Lee says:

den so what? we just sit here stagnating and going backwards under wenger? I’ll be interested to know what you want to happen at Arsenal….

  24. den says:

I’m not against replacing wenger just think that he deserves little more respect for what he has done for the club we all love. I was at stoke on Saturday and the loudest songs were the 49 undefeated and in answer to stoke fans hurling insults at AW our reply was he’s won more than you arsene wenger he’s won more than you. I’m sure you can see the irony. Finally lets all just step back and see when wenger supposedly lost his touch. It looks to me that it coincides pretty much with our club being sold out to two guys who have no interest in our club save how much they can make. I dread to think where we would be today if he walked away at that time.

  25. Lee says:

But how can Arsenal fans accept that? Maybe it’s because “Le Boss” has got us into a competition for the last trillion years that we’ll never win with him at the helm? I give up…

  26. allezkev says:

My God, the traffic around Tower Bridge is gridlocked, worst I’ve seen in years…
Been sitting in the same spot, Pepys Street, not moved for almost 20 minutes…

Den, I don’t agree with you, but if you go to the away games then I respect your opinion…

The problem is, the antipathy among the fans has arisen because the club hasn’t made the progress on the field, that it really should have done over the last few years, considering the fact that stadium debt isn’t the millstone that it once was…

Wenger controls everything at the club, so when things go awry, who else do we blame?

That’s unless you believe that Arsene is actually above criticism…

  27. potter says:

Actually Den , sold out to one guy, the other has shares but no power , no say and even if he sold to a third party tomorrow it would make no difference the third party would have no say either. It grieves me when you listen to supporters of other clubs that cite that we have two billionaires on our board , in the words of our not so beloved leader “” This is wrong information “” . Usmanov is there for the money too , but until he is allowed to have an input no-one will know exactly what his real motives are. We used to have a board of custodians that were pretty even handed about how the club was run , if not a bit staid, but when the £ signs were put before them they sold us down the river and the balance was lost..

  28. rogerbij says:

Good thoughts all. A few more – since buying Ozil, I think Wenger has done really well with the players he bought – Ozil, Sanchez, Chambers, Deb, Wellb, Ospina… (I dont count Sanogo because thankfully we didnt pay money for him). All of them make the team better. BUT its not sufficient is it because a top DM and another CB are missing. So I cant criticise who he has bought, but only who he has not yet bought.

Another thought someone wrote about defensive systems being Wengers problem /fault. That is only half true in my view. The entire backline are international players. They know their jobs. Sometimes they dont execute, like Merts hopelessly out of position and out of speed for ManUs second goal. Or on Saturday Chambers is completely at fault for the first goal – he missed a header that he was in position to make, and which most of us make in Sunday leagues. We are also seeing lately Chamber’s abilities without the hype. He is good, but not the finished article. Ive said it on here before that he will get sent off for pulling and using his arms. He does it every week more than any other player. And against Stoke it happened killing our comeback roll.

So Wenger takes responsibility for the defensive system and the players he buys. But it is ridiculous in my view to blame Wenger for players’ individual mistakes.

Finally, I hope some reality is coming to some on the boards that Martinez is certainly not better than Chez. Any keeper can look good when there are no shots coming in, but against stoke gave me little confidence.

(ps Im noticing that many on HH have stopped calling for Klopp as the next Arsenal manager in recent months… )

  29. allezkev says:

Den, the problems began when Dein was sacked…

Wenger trusted him and respected his views and therefore DD had a bit of an influence in persuading Arsene to go the extra mile he probably didn’t want to go…

I doubt if Wenger listens to anyone now, save Boro Primoric…

  30. allezkev says:

Szczesny was in goal when we shipped 5 at Anfield, 6 at Stamford Bridge and 8 at Old Bog…
He was also in goal when we lost the League Cup Final to Birmingham….

It’s a moot point, but I wonder if Arsenal would have won last season’s FACup with Szczeny in goal?

  31. rico says:

I’m off out into the cold with Fido, even she wants Arsene Wenger gone as she knows he can’t teach her anything with a football… 😉

  32. den says:

Potter you’re absolutely right regarding Dein as regards Usminov I really can’t see any other reason for him to be involved other than money. As Kroenke won’t acknowledge him destabilizing the club seems his only way to get hold of control. Don’t you think it’s strange how Usminov keeps quiet when we’re winning but as soon as we’re losing he is out with all kinds of solutions and what he’d do. You’re right again blaming the greedy **** who sold out to not one but two guys to maximize their profits regardless of what it would do to our club. Just remember this in the words of Alan Davies they don’t own the club we do they are custodians and as such will change at different intervals as supporters we are constant. I use the word supporters rather than fans for a specific reason that I’m sure you recognise.

  33. tsgh says:

    Interesting comment Roger.
Klopp is a good manager but according to bvb fans too has never been tactically.
Like most managers with a philosophy he sticks to it and he also has favourite s.
As a bfn fan I can’t understand why gundogan walked into the team after his long injury…

  34. rogerbij says:

Good call TSGH, Gundogan walking back in miffed me too! Mind you, its desperate times there at the moment. Could there be a fire sale for Reus and Hummels at the end of the season? (I doubt they would let key player leave before then when they are in a scrap)

  35. Lee says:

Several members of the U21 squad could be involved when the Arsenal first-team take on Galatasaray tomorrow night in their final Champions League group stage fixture.

Arsene Wenger’s team have already secured their place in the Last 16 of the competition but a victory over the Turkish team coupled with a defeat for Borussia Dortmund against Anderlecht would see Arsenal top the group.

Despite this Wenger isn’t taking his strongest possible squad, with Laurent Koscielny and Alexis Sanchez set to be rested. In addition Olivier Giroud and Semi Ajayi aren’t eligible for the Champions League, whilst Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Serge Gnabry, Mikel Arteta, Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal are all out injured. Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina, Abou Diaby and Isaac Hayden are unlikely to be fit enough to play.

There was some good news with Tomas Rosicky and Yaya Sanogo both returning from injury to participate in today’s training session. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who was on the bench against Stoke City at the weekend, looks set to remain with the squad, whilst Chuba Akpom, Gedion Zelalem, Stefan O’Connor and Glen Kamara also trained with the team today and are in contention for inclusion. Dan Crowley would ordinarily be considered for selection but he isn’t eligible to play in the Champions League at the moment.

If they feature it would be an excellent opportunity for Akpom and Zelalem to impress as both players, despite being part of the first-team squad, haven’t been called up as regularly as they would have liked this season.

Players who haven’t started regularly this season, such as Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell, could be involved from the offset against Galatasaray. Wojciech Szczesny could replace Emiliano Martinez in goal.

  36. agirlagunner says:

Boo! Hello from typhoony Manila!! The weather matches my mood. Grrrr.

Good one, rico! It really may be time for AW to reexamine whether he intends to see out the remainder of his contract. This version of the Arsenal just isn’t good enough; and he created it.

  37. tsgh says:

Roger, bvb will lose subotic next summer as badstuder’s is still not fully fit.
Dante I believe would go if Martinez comes back from injury ok.

  38. agirlagunner says:

Manila is okay, ginge. But the coast of Eastern Visayas took a battering. 🙁 So depressing watching the news… definitely not helped by reading news about Arsenal.

    Hiya, Lee. 🙂

  39. potter says:

Den whilst it is true that they both bought shares , we have to remember that the board of directors were the ones that chose Kroenke , they to a man sold to him , pocketed the money and remarkably kept their positions and now are completely in his control. There is also a rumour which I cannot substantiate that he borrowed the money to make the original purchases but still owes certain board members their share of the proceeds and is paying by instalment. Maybe that’s what the £ 3 million was for.

  40. allezkev says:

Agag, good to see that all is tickedy boo in the Agag-household… 🙂

Does Jimmy Choo do Wellington boots? 😀

  41. allezkev says:

Arsenal’s team to face Galatasaray (4-3-3): Szczesny; Debuchy, Mertesacker, Chambers, Bellerin; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Flamini, Ramsey; Campbell, Sanogo, Podolski

  42. scottfromoz says:

    Morning all.
    This is a Highbury House.
I think it’s the best Arsenal site/blog/page in he world.
I’ve even started a Facebook page which is run on the same basis Rico runs this.
One thing disappoints me more than anything else………I don’t care what you think of Wenger, but the personal attacks and name calling of the man is simply petty and ridiculous.
The man has a name….how bloody hard is it to use it?
It’s getting worse, and the House is NOT better off for it.
    Hate him.
    Criticise him.
    Call for his head.
His name is Arsene Wenger, and he’s still done more for this club than any of us could ever hope to do, and remember this…..when others jump on here, do we want them thinking it’s another Le Grove??
Too much work has been done by too many great people for this to cheapen the entire thing.
Agag, good to hear you’re safe.

  43. scottfromoz says:

House rules……it’s ok to disagree……..we can do it the right way and not resort to infighting.
Seriously, I brushed off a comment where I was accused of condoning violence!!
    That’s insulting and inciteful.
Everyone is stressed, whichever side of the debate we are on.

  44. rico says:

Well I don’t agree with name calling either Scott, yes Arsene Wenger is really peeing me off but name calling, well that’s not for me…

I’ve clearly missed the bit about you condoning violence….

  45. Wavy says:

Bit troubled by the Daily Fail’s naming of the squad, it is unprecedented, I think. It portents things which should not be…..could this presage AW’s last stand? And, he is not travelling as he is composing his resignation from the peace, serenity and solitude of his own study?
There’s a bit at the beginning of ‘the Scottish play’ where the world seems tipsy turvy. Eagles being attacked by little birds, and several other bizarre events, can’t be bothered to go look ’em up! But we all know what happened subsequently, the world order was rewritten and mayhem and chaos followed.
The portents are not looking too rosy right now. Hope there is nothing in it but we are approaching silly season, aren’t we?

  46. scottfromoz says:

    Wavy, who knows what’s happening?
    Funny times…stressful times.
Supporters support when the going gets tough, IMO.
Protests should be done after games and with respect.
If Wenger leaves, it must be after this season, and not during, IMO.

  47. Wavy says:

Rico, I’ve no idea. Between you and me, I think he probably is taking the plane to Constantinople! It really would be catastrophic if he wasn’t!

But, you know, Banners, barracking and booing can have very serious effects on the health, wealth and well being!
The man is human after all. He may be stubborn, intractable and tetchy but, even he is not insensitive to public discontent. Sir Bob W said how upset he was last year when the fans seemed to have turned against him and, that we should be very careful about what we wished for….. The script has, maybe already been written……….watch this space, the soap opera has only just begun, but it is gaining momentum!

  48. rico says:

Scott, I kind of worry about where our club will be if change doesn’t happen soon but then on the other hand, Arsene Wenger has a habit of pulling something out of the bag to ensure we get top four…..

If he can do that, which I think is his toughest challenge yet, then great. Then walk away….

But I will be sad when that day comes, regardless of the fact that deep down I know it’s time……

  49. rico says:

Adam. I’d like to think even his most anti fans would be. He changed our club for the better and we have enjoyed some wonderful times and have watched so many fabulous players….

    We’ve been very very lucky….

But like I said, the board and owner offered him one last contract which they shouldn’t have done ……..

  50. rico says:

In all honesty, I wish he’d blow the January trasfer window apart and sign 3/4 fantastic players, change his coaching staff and at least get us 3rd… But again, deep down I know he won’t…..

  51. Lewis says:

    Jammy fucking Utd again.

From this saint team I’d take, Forster, clyne, Bertrand, Santana and schneiderlin. And they’d all be an upgrade on what we have. Sad state of affairs.

  52. Wavy says:

Agreed Scott. That would be the honourable thing to do. He would leave with the gratitude of everyone. However, would he not argue that as he achieved a successful outcome to the Sarasota that would give him a mandate to continue!

Manure getting closer to the top of the dung heap. Another rotten display by them tonight and yet, 3 more undeserved points. Arguably 2 Forster errors, makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

  53. allezkev says:

I can’t envisage any scenario where Wenger would walk out mid-season, that’s just never going to happen and a waste of time debating, with all due respect, imo…

  54. allezkev says:

Sarasota is a very old word BT….

It means:- ‘my spellchecker has fcuked me again’

    I get Sarasota all the time… 🙂

  55. BT62 Gooner says:

Night Kev, thought you would know all the old words….lol

Kev, i agree, i can’t see AW walking mid season….

  56. Wavy says:

My iPad has obviously acquired AI, no not Artificial Intelligence but, Artificial Insemination! Cos if it does it again I’ll fcuk it myself! That’ll show it who’s in control and it won’t be Apple’s favourite toy!

  57. allezkev says:

God it was a bit parky this morning….

Lee, I really don’t know how you do it, every morning during the week, on these cold mornings….

You must have electrically heated underpants… 🙂

  58. scottfromoz says:

    Hiya Kev.
    How’s things bud?
Will a win tonight mean anything in the grand scheme of things?
Probably not, but a loss will just add to the dramas, I fear.
My next trip is late next year, or early 2016.
Once I know, I’ll advise you all so you can arrange your own holidays 🙂 🙂 🙂
