How the move for Jamie Vardy unfolded…

Morning all.

Wouldn’t you just loved to have been a fly on the wall, or on the seat, sat quietly listening to the words exchanged between David Dein and Arsene Wenger whilst they watched England play Portugal last Friday night?

I would, I seriously would.

The man who supported the arrival of Dennis Bergkamp and probably had an awful lot to do with the securing the deal, the man who pushed Arsene Wenger into signing players like Henry, Pires, Vieira, Freddie, Gilberto, Petit….. the list is endless, clearly remains good friends with our manager and why not, they worked together for a long time.

Imagine the conversation:

DD – Arsene, what have you bee messing around at for the last few years, why haven’t you spent more and done better?

AW – Errr, I was swimming and playing volleyball on lovely beaches two years ago David, I didn’t have much time to do anything.

DD – What about last summer, Petr Cech great but no outfield players, come on man, wise up.

AW – I could’t find any players better than who I had David, really I couldn’t and I simply can’t upset Olivier or Feeoo, they are so so sensitive…

DD – Maybe, but they aren’t going to win you the league are they, look at that beast out there, (points to Vardy) for goodness sake, go and get him, he’s only £20 million.

AW – Errr, I don’t know David, £20 million is around twice the amount I wanted to spend on a striker!

DD – Don’t be so tight Arsene, spend the Yanks money, that’s why you and I worked so hard to get the new stadium, more money and better players. It’s taken you a year to get Xhaka now go and get Vardy and tonight. Come on, come with me.

As the final whistle blows, hand in hand Dein and Wenger trot off together away from the pitch and wait for Vardy to exit the changing rooms.

DD – Jamie, this is Arsene, he wants to sign you up for Arsenal.

JV – Holy Mars Bars Mr Dein, where do I sign?

AW – No Mars Bars allowed I’m afraid Jamie, nor alcohol and if that’s ok, I’ll see you on Sunday for a medical, I’ll get on the phone to Claudio now to get things moving. See you soon.

As Jamie Vardy skips away with glee, Arsene takes his mobile phone out of his pocket. After struggling for a few minutes with the zip around the case, he dials…

Ring ring…

CR – Ciao

AW – Claudio, it’s Arsene, would you accept £10 million for Jamie Vardy?

Before Claudio can answer, David Dein grabs the phone and tells the Leicester manager that Arsenal will pay the release clause to get their man. Claudio agrees and everything is done. All that’s left to sort out is a medical and a financial package.

Arsene grabs his phone back and starts chatting again to Claudio, telling him what a wonderful season Leicester had and how he admired them for winning the league with a 442 formation and with little possession during matches. Then just before the two said their goodbyes….

AW – Can I sign Mahrez too please Claudio? I’ll give you a tenner and Feeooooo….

The line went dead and off the two chums went to share a nice bottle of red over dinner with David Dein shaking his head in disbelief over the Mahrez conversation….

Ok, just a bit of fun, but I do wonder what Dein and Wenger chatted about and I bet the Frenchman was glad to see his old mate again. If only Arsene had a guy like Dein pushing him these days eh, although it does seem that this summer could could be the best one for us fans for a long time….

Well, I hope it is…

    Very good sketch…

Now that Goonie believes the story what next?

Didn’t AW and DD live close to each other before AW was kicked out by his Mrs?

  3. Le Coq Monster says:

Hahaha……hand in hand Dein and Wenger trot off !……………..I can visualise it, after all they are neighbours aren`t they ?. 😀

Wath, I don’t know the one at the Elephant, but there used to be one in East Ham back in the 1970’s, close to Barking Road just off of the High St North…
    No doubt it’s extinct now…

The AW pie in the Piebury corner is simply the best. The Tony Adam’s pie not too bad.

The Eboue Pie with rat meat is coming next based on special request by Syg.

Inamoto and Miyachi pies were better than the Park Chu-Young pie.

I wonder what happened to the Adebawhore pie… a tad too expensive me think.

Good Morning to The Lady of the House and fellow Gooners in residence.

Rico – Agreat read. You should write scripts for the TV – comedy and light drama. I’m not to sure about your sexist? remark at 10:56 though.

  15. goonster says:

News emerging that vardy has rejected a move to arsenal and will now sign a new improved deal with leceister. Wow that went well ?so I guess that’s it then. No vardy party. This sucks. Here i was dreaming about formations and permutations. Why arsenal all the time? We ll be made the laughing stock again. We can’t even sign Jamie fucking vardy of all people. He’s not messi folks just Jamie fucking vardy!!! That’s it i give up.

  16. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – I cringe while imagining what might have been as or was in the Adebuymore pie. Bush meat perhaps?

  17. allezkev says:

Now you did promise Ginge, that you would never mention that…

And that I borrowed them from your extensive collection ?

  18. Wath says:

anyone thinking an 11:30 is real is as mad as we all know Stan is…. Vardy with England, hardly difficult to sort a medical is it, Mesut did his with Germany..!
It’s all about politics and timing…!

I personally think Stan has as usual jinxed the whole thing but hey ho….!

  19. Canadian Gooner says:

Goonie – Hang in there, the transfer window isn’t evem open yet. So, Arsene et al still have plenty of time to sign more players. Now they can move onto Rodriguez, Koulibaly and the youngster from Bolton. Then? – onto Morata or maybe even Higuain or PEA. I’m dreaming of course, but sometimes dreams come true.

Have faith my friend. Things will work themselves out in the end.

  20. tsgh says:

🙂 Cg- don’t knock it until you have tried it…; it’s probably the official text of the offside rules…
At least Rico’s remarks are not like Labour MP Harriet Harman a self confessed feminist who a few weeks back defended Kim Kardashian posting nude selfies online as “brave and pioneering”.

  21. Le Coq Monster says:

Talking of multi-tasking, I was doing a job for this woman and she came onto me, we ended up in the bedroom, I was going about the business when I had a text message from my mate.
He text to say…..” who said us men cant multi task, I`m texting you whilst driving my car and singing to the radio !”.
I text him back saying….”That`s nothing, I`m having sex whilst eating a sandwich and painting her ceiling and with one eye out the window in case her husband comes home and texting you !”.
    He texts me back saying….” You`re a legend !”
I text him back saying ….”I know!”
He then texts me back saying…………..” what the fuck is your car doing in my driveway ?”

  22. goonster says:

First Suarez now this. Can’t believe I let myself be dragged into this again. The Suarez saga is still fresh in my memory. I remember how those scouse bastards teased us all summer. Now it ll be them and everyone else including cnut faced manure fans whom I abhor the most. This can’t keep happening. We are a laughing stock. I give up.

  23. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – Even The Lady of the House needs reminding their is a level of decorum expected in the House (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, eh, eh).

  24. Le Coq Monster says:

Dont give up Goonster !……………..go find your source and torture him/her !…….some satisfaction is needed ! hahaha

  25. Canadian Gooner says:

Goonie – Remember “those scouse bastards” were also after Vardy, but weren’t qualified for his release clause because they weren’t in the Champions League.

There is no need to beat yourself up over Vardy. However, you have to respect that he wants to stay loyal to the team that took a chance on bringing him up from the lower levels of the football league. I wish some of our former players showed the same loyalty instead of being money grubbing mercenaries.

  26. Canadian Gooner says:

Is it definite Vardy is not coming to Arsenal? The ‘stories’ I’m picking up is that he is postponing his decision.

  27. goonster says:

CG he’s not coming. It’s official. He played us for a sap. Used arsenal as a bargaining chip to get a better deal from leceister. He’s already in the air now with the England team so I guess it’s over then. That escalated really really fast.

  28. Canadian Gooner says:

It seems young Calum Chambers is being mooted for a season long loan with Sotton and now Watford being mentioned.

  29. goonster says:

Am so sick of this pain. This won’t happen to manure chelshit or even shitty but keeps happening to us every damned season. I ve had enough.

  30. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – That my take on it also. We’ll just have to wait and see – patiently or not in Goonie’s case. Ah, the exhilaration of the Arsenal transfer sagas. On to the next target(s) while we wait for Vardy’s decision.

  31. rico says:

Would be a good move for Chambers imo, he needs to be playing. I hoped he’d go to Saints but Koeman is heading to Everton.. Odd move that one..

  32. rico says:

Ditto Cg, it’s up to Vardy and as you said, if he stays where he is then so be it…

Crack on with other targets in the meantime…

  33. Canadian Gooner says:

rico – I too am surprised at Koeman’s move. Maybe he has the chance of more transfer funds at Everton. He has done wonders at Sotton on a restricted budget, but it does tie a manager’s hands and there is little chance of Sotton’s finances markedly improving in the near future..

  34. Le Coq Monster says:

Moshiri to spend £100m on transfers at Everton and build a new stadium !………………just think what he and Uzmanov would have done at The Arsenal if they had had the majority shares instead of the bastard Kroenke !……………breaks my heart to think of the trophies we probably would have had !.

    😥

  35. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – I’m wondering if Arsene’s uncommon activity in this TW isn’t due, in part, to the promise of deep funding by the new owners of the likes of Aston Villa and Everton. That and the new TV deal money that next season will give the lowest team in the league the equivalent of Arsenal’s top of the pile earnings this season. That is a lot of money. The teams in the European leagues must be cringing at the thought of being financially out competed by even lower table teams.

Next season’s windows are going to be a cut throat free for all for the BPL teams.

  36. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – I don’t know about his retirement. That may/will depend on results in the new season. However, with the money that will potentially be sloshing around the BPL next season, it may be a case of buying now while Arsenal have the financial advantage over most of the league or face tough dog fights next year.

Plus, our usual rivals Chelski, the Dippers and ManUre missing out on Champions League places gives us an added advantage. Poor Klopp is having a terrible time getting any of his major targets. Even Mario Gotze, who Klopp has worked with in the past, is rumoured to have turned down Liverfool as a step backwards.

Anyway, dawn approaches and I only stayed up to see if Vardy was signing for us. So, I’m of to bed as I have a busy day (well afternoon) ahead. With that, it is Good Night from me and Good Afternoon to most of you.

I haven’t seen Scott on recently. I hope all is well with him. I thought he’d be on with the recent rumours that Arsenal are interested in the Aussie midfielder at Celtic.

  40. thepeterspencer says:

My sources confirm the complete accuracy of your account of ‘How the move for Jamie Vardy’s pay rise unfolded’ apart from the bit about “that’s why you and I worked so hard to get the new stadium”. Didn’t DD want us to instead become rentboys at the shitole 2, aka Wembley, while the greatly missed Danny Fiszman and good old Ken Friar were the ones who worked so hard to get the new stadium?

  41. Wavy says:

At this point I would say Vardy has blown it! If, big if, but if he promised to indicate his future to old Arsene before he left these shores, and hasn’t, I imagine the old geezer will be pretty pissed off with the player. Ebeneezer is a man of his word with oodles of integrity and he doesn’t like being played as a fool! So probably even if Vardy decides he wants to join Arsenal he may well find that Wenger will have changed his!

Or all this was a tactical game to increase Vardy’s pay packet at Leicester! If that is the case then I would say aging Jamie has won the day! I have said of L city that they are cash rich they can afford to pay all their squad mega bucks, so if it’s cash based I’m surprised the whole saga got this far, at all.

  42. obi says:

    Hello All:

No Vardy? Go for Igahlo, Watford will sell @ 20m and he will easily get 20 goals playing with Arsenal. Just don’t stand still. Plus you add Mkhitaryan you have address the offense issue. Then get a CB.

  43. tsgh says:

LC- the photo of Sol Campbell and Bojo and Gove plus Priti Patel makes me chuckle anytime I see it…

One would have thought Sol getting married to Fiona to get himself into some of teh Barratts ‘Old Money’ would have stopped him there…

  44. tsgh says:

I still cant understand why AW never bought Trezeguet instead of Wiltord. If AW had bought Trezeguet instead of Frannie Jeffers I bet AW would have won the UCL by now…
Anotehr example of AW choosing to manage the ego of TH14 a player who was becoming bigger than the club…

  45. tsgh says:

we kept the joint-most clean sheets in the EPL last season. The best since 1998 was that all to do with Cech or a decent defence?

Cynics will say its to do with Cech but closer look shows there is only a small deviation in clean sheets since then. The major change is that the performance of the traditionally better defensive teams…

  46. tsgh says:

Joe if you are around- is it not interesting how Vardy went 814 mins without scoring from open play in the EPL last season but OG12’s 882 minutes drought was attributed to us not being able to win the title…
Media and fans made it out to be like OG12 was the most toothless striker in the EPL history…

Another point showing sections of Arsenal fans put too much pressure on our CDM and CF’s.

Most top teams rely on the performance of the whole XI on the pitch at one time to defend and score goals

  47. Nashua Gunner says:

    Good Afternoon Rico and All.
Interesting read this afternoon and as always.

JV to the Arsenal? Are we ready to change our style of play to accommodate JV? I’ll believe it when I see it at Arsenal. Com.
As much as I been crying for new striker since we bought Ozil, JV isn’t my first choice but he’ll make all the difference when it comes to pace. When we break after a corner kick and JV is in front, we should expect a goal. Holding the ball up front is one thing, but a striker who can hold the ball up front and run with it, is another thing. And JV fits that bill.

  48. tsgh says:

Important stats coming out …Vardy scored only 1 more goal than OG12 all season if one excludes penalties…

Maybe if we OG12 took as many penalties as Mahez and Vardy and referees awarded us as many penalties then it would be a different story…

  49. Lee says:

I’m underwhelmed by the potential Steptoe signing, his numbers are Giroud-esque when you strip out the plethora of penalties he “won” and converted.

I’d be pushing the boat out for a top top drawer striker, Brudder Adam is rubbing off on me!

  50. tsgh says:

we won 2 penalties all season.. Leicester won 15 penalties. do the maths…
Vardy and Mahez took 7 and 8 penalties respectively and scored 6 and 6 respectively.

  51. tsgh says:

I am good Ng by the creator’s grace…

I always read HH but sometimes it seemed a bit too deja vu-esque so I kept my trap shut. lol

An example is this OG12 vs Vardy comparison…; I take nothing at all from the player but surely he is nothing special…

If he was playing for Arsenal he wouldn’t get even 30% of the 7 penalties he was awarded last season…

  52. tsgh says:

Another example is the link to Mk’tayan, which twitter is going wild about…

Those are the same fans who claimed a team of SC19, MO11, JW10 never worked as they were similar but are now speculating it will be the best front 3 or 4..

Don’t get me wrong Mk’tayan is a top player but only as a replacement of MO11.

Having seen Mk’tayan a few times since he joined BVB he is another one who will drop short like the many other players we have in the squad.

Another no.10 who is played on the wings but will move in-field unless as I mentioned Mo11 is leaving…

Maybe AW is making arrangement to replace Mo11…

  53. Nashua Gunner says:

Ts. To bring the best out of OG12 give him serious competition. How many sitters OG12 missed last season? I think competition is a good thing.
OX, Theo and DW I don’t consider them serious players especially DW and Theo in front.

  54. Le Coq Monster says:

If you boys had Pie&Mash with Kev in Bethnal Green are you like me from Bethnal Green or were you just on a PIe&Mash Shop Crawl ? 😀

  55. Adam says:

Brudder. I never figured that he would enter the frame. Thinking about it, he definitely brings options, largely through pace. Comparing him with Giroud is an odd one considering the quality of our suppliers and also misleading as statistics without weighting are very dubious and actually misleading. I think that he would score a few goals. But, having listened to people bitch about how appalling players like him are with their bad sportsmanship and diving, it’s odd to think we could end up with him. But, generally, I think that we should be looking further up the quality scale. Go monster for Pogba, Aubamayang and a true quality central defender I would say. Perhaps we don’t have any chance of getting them but perhaps we do.

Have they forgotten Tomas is off…. 😉

  57. tsgh says:

I forgot about Ulloa converting a penalty for Leicester as well. That makes it 16 penalties…

Considering they scored only 3 more goals than us the whole season and we conceded the same number of goals 36… I wonder how they won 4 more games than us..
Maybe we were flat track bullies at times…

  59. obi says:

Re Ts @ 3:37. AW dont have to play MO and Mkhitaryan together all the time, you can rotate them. But playing MO, SC and JC doesnt work because they are not fast, athletic or strong when other teams break, but know with either Xhaxa, Elneny or Coq it works because some1 does the dirty work. MO will always drift into space anyway, and most of the time he drift from the wing whereas Mkhitaryan actually stays in the 10 hole much more, except when he plays for Armenia. If you put Santi, Ozil and Mkhitaryan (in the midfield) is equivalent to having Messi, Suarez and Neymer as your forward.

  60. Nashua Gunner says:

Looking back at the way we lined up at Barc, I don’t think for a second that the Europe Elites are scare of Arsenal.
    Iwobi. Ozil. A. Sanchez
    DW23

And whenever ManU get rid of a player and he comes to Arsenal, he never get me excited.

  61. tsgh says:

Totally agree Ng. OG12 misses chances but he also scores decent goals.

I am no way insinuating Vardy is not a good player…

Its just when football fans as a whole say Vardy from a lower league in his first season in the EPL has scored more goals than OG12 without considering how the said player scored about 35% of their goals…

Now P.E.A is a player who will get me excited if we were to sign him even though him leaving BVb will sudden me…

  62. Le Coq Monster says:

  63. tsgh says:

    Obi- I am with you.
But Mk’tayan is playing properly in the no.10 role for the first time under Tuchel…

Under Klopp, M’tayan was mainly played on the wings with Lew upfront and P.E.A coming of the bench if Reus was fit…Gundogan was also used in the whole when he came back from injury 2 seasons ago instead of Mk’tayan…

After Lew left BVB, Klopp mainly played Immobile or Adrian Ramos upfront and still kept Mk’tayan mainly as a winger. It was only after Christmas when BVB was 2 points of relegation that P/E.A was moved upfront…

    T. Terry, k.Zouma and OG12

Terry. Zouma I going to the men room, so keep an eye Giroud.

Zouma. Are you serious, we’re just 20 minutes into the game. This is the wrong time to go to the men room. I can’t handle Giroud by myself.

Terry. Don’t worry. He’s no pace, he can’t score and you can out pace him. Besides, Obie is right behind him.

Giroud. I don’t need pace to score. My head will do the trick. Wait and see. This will be your biggest mistake Terry.

Terry. You don’t scare me Giroud. Get some pace and come back and talk to me.

    Giroud. We’ll see.

    🙂 🙂

  66. Nashua Gunner says:

Btw, that game should have taken us on top of the table. On top of Lic.City. Even though Terry left to used the men’s room Giroud couldn’t score..

Tsgh it’s always the far away grass whish is always greener ?
Take out the penalties and it’s only on goal well how about adding Giroud’s international goals.

To be honest I haven’t watched him on a regular basis so, in my head, he is probably not as good as I think he is. 🙂

  70. Bob John says:

I have a feeling that the Vardy deal is probably done but as usual Arsenal don’t announce straight away. If he was staying Leicester would be falling over themselves to announce it. Re: Aubameyang, I’m sure I heard or read that he had missed the most chances in Europe

  71. Le Coq Monster says:

If Wenger would have listened to me, he would have bought Aubameyang from St Etienne for £10M and saved himself £50M !…….there`s a lot more I told him about but he never wrote back to me or phoned, shame really as I was only outside hiding behind his dust bins………..could have waved the ignorant fucker !.

  72. Obi says:

Ts agreed @ 4.25, and if he came to Arsenal I would keep him in the hole and let MO drift in and out, just like he did in the WC.

60m for Aubameyang, wow! One good season with 20+ goals. I guess he’s bringing Mk’tayan, etc to spoon feed him. I have watch him tons of times with Dortmund and 20+ times with Gabon, two totally different players. He requires a lot of services.

  73. Bob John says:

Point being Rico.is that if Aubameyang was missing chances for us people would be demanding we ditched him for that Giroud bloke who’s scoring 20+ a season in France and for the national team

  74. rico says:

Not me Bob…. For one he misses, he’ll score oodles… Unlike that French bloke called…. Errr, you know the one, he’s growing a beard so he can paint it red white and blue…..

  75. Le Coq Monster says:

Not even the manager !…………but West Ham co-owner David Sullivan say`s he has put in bids for 5 different players !………..wouldn`t it be nice if Kroenke came out and let us know stuff like that !………………..” Exciting news Arsenal fans, I have put in bids for 5 different ranches @ £500M each………….suckers ! “

  76. Le Coq Monster says:

Hectic day !………..inbetween waiting for Darth Vardy news I have planted 2 Spirea`s, 1 Bramley Seedling apple tree, been down the gym and just shifted 3 tonne of the 12 tonne of sand delivered !…………..pity someone at Arsenal dont put a shift in and put Goonster out of his misery either way !……………………mind you I like Bob`s take on it that Over land and Sea and Leicester would be shouting from the roof tops if he was staying !

  77. rico says:

Ha ha Obi, not really. Tbh, I’ve no idea how much he has to spend, who is going etc so just having a bit of fun really with all the top players out there, all of whom will no doubt, never set foot into Arsenal…

    Morning all…

  78. Lee says:

Rico, Wenger should of put a time limit on the offer imho. Allowing Vardy too much time will just help him get a Morecombe & Wise at Leicester and stay there…..

  79. Wavy says:

    Morning all.

    Vardy? Mmm?

Arsenal.com ! It’s a waiting game now. Don’t hold your breath for a successful outcome. Time to reflect usually leads to the maintainance of the status quo. Still if you look on the bright side, no Vardy means Wenger doesn’t have to change tactics. Tika talks will still rule! However, it may lead to Ozil leaving.
    Just a hunch!

Couldn’t agree more Lee but that’s not the Wenger way is it? He probably sent him off with a box of tissues saying ‘take your time son’…..

Meanwhile, the Chavs sneak in and get Morata….

I would still prefer us to sign Benteke. I reckon we could get him for a good price. I’m sure Klopp’s strikers will be Sturridge and Origi and maybe Ings. I doubt Benteke will want to be 3rd/ 4th choice and play as little as he has last season.

He is quick, strong and a finnisher.

  82. tsgh says:

Conte signed Morata from Juve and he did have faith in the player.

Allegri came in and mostly played Morata from the bench so I guess it makes sense that Morata has ended up there….

  83. bradster says:

That’s why we’re allowed to differ here.
His story reminds me of Torres, both not played to their strengths that make them phenomenal before.
