Tomas Rosicky joined Arsenal in May 2006.
He was going to be one of the players that would shape the next team under Arsene Wenger, the Fabregas Team.
Out went stalwarts like Sol Campbell, Dennis Bergkamp and Bobby Pires, the man many saw Rosicky replacing.
During that period, Arsenal also signed the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Theo Walcott, Abou Diaby and Alex Song.
Yes, the times were a changing.
Tomas fitted seamlessly into the Bobby Pires role and had an encouraging first season in the No.7 shirt. 37 league & cup appearances with 6 goals promised better things to come as Tomas adapted to his new club and English football.
The highlight of 2006-07 for Tomas was his brace of goals at Anfield in the FA Cup which broke the Scousers and led to an impressive 3-1 victory. 2007-08 was the most productive to dat, for Tomas in the EPL with 6 goals in only 18 appearances.
The injuries, the darned injuries that have blighted his time at Arsenal, were becoming more numerous, and in January 2008 they became more serious.
The nightmare began for Tomas in the January of that season when he suffered a ‘rare, long-term tendon injury.
It meant the entire 2008-09 season was a complete write-off, as well as the second half of 2007-08.
At 28 to have lost over 18 months of your career, in your peak years, must have been a terrible blow for Rosicky to take.
Many fans began to doubt Rosicky’s durability during that 18 month absence, could he ever return after so long on the sidelines?
Fortunately, despite our doubts, Arsene Wenger never doubted ‘Little Mozarts’ ability to return.
A full pre-season and action in the 2009 Emirates Cup promised a change in fortune for Tomas but the niggling pulls and strains were never far away.
Whilst 2009-10 was an improvement on what had gone before, it was still a case of stop-start for Rosicky and we had the added competition of Andrei Arshavin for his place in the team. Regardless, he managed 20 starts in all competitions and 33 appearances in total.
By the end of 2009-10, Rosicky had been an Arsenal player for 4 seasons, he’d managed only 70 starts and 24 substitute appearances, at an average of only 23 games per season.
As 2010-11 kicked off Tomas found that he was now a confirmed ‘squad player’.
Still picking up the occasional muscle injury, he was thought by many, to be surplus to requirements. He was just the experienced player who Wenger used, to help the Kids in the Carling Cup etc. Tomas was very much playing second fiddle to Arshavin, Fabregas, Nasri and the new sensation Jack Wilshere.
Only 8 starts in the EPL in 2010-11, told its own story.
He 34 appearances in total, but almost half of them from the substitutes bench! His one goal, came in a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.
That Leyton Orient game was just over 12 months ago.
Since then, we’ve witnessed the departures of Fabregas, Nasri and more recently Arshavin. A door has opened once more for Little Mozart and the turn of the year has seen his Arsenal career has taken a much different path.
He is now playing in his preferred position and is an important member of the midfield, he is the man who orchestrates the flow and the rhythm of the team, switching the play from one side of the pitch to the opposite side.
He conducts, he weaves the patterns across the middle of the park, changing the direction of the attacks with quick incisive passes.
At 31, he has signed a new 2 year extension to his contract, something seldom offered by Wenger for a player over 30!
Memorable goals against Middlesex Hotspurs and AC Milan have rekindled his appetite for goalscoring and most important of all, he has managed to remain fit…
Maybe in his Golden Years as a footballer, he has prehaps, finally learnt to adjust his game, his training and his preparations and is avoiding all those career stunting pulls and strains.
Like a fine wine he is maturing into a major player for Van Persie’s New Arsenal.
Finally and behalf of all here on Highbury House, thoughts and very best wishes go out to our old boy Fabrice Muamba who remains critically ill in hospital.
May he and his family find strength to get through this dreadful time…
Get well soon big guy……

AK,a great post with a subtle but beautiful ending.
Plenty of Aussies have everything crossed for Fabrice.
His little boy should get to know his dad,and vice versa.
Morning all
Totally agree Scott, great post AK, Tomas is indeed like a fine wine, and now we are finally seeing the best from him…
Fianlly AW has seen sense, if a player is good enough, it doesn’t matter if he’s 30…
Wishing Fabrice all the very best for a speedy recovery….
Nice one S.AK as usual,
I have often thought that Wenger holds onto players to long when their form dips, Rosiski was one of them and i often think that players like him and Arshavin have been the reason that we have not won anything, Rosiski has found some form and has been one of our best players recently, but we have to ask ourselves should he realy still be with us,reliability is what a football team needs and Rosiski has not shown this for some time, he has resigned for 2 more years at 30 years old is this pushing our luck.
Morning Rico and all. Nice post Kev. Really hoping that Fabrice pulls through and that there is good news today from Bethnal Green.
Rosicky was always a class act in International football before he joined us and I was really happy when he did. I just hope that both he and Arsenal get the best from him in this two year extension.
As for the other news regarding Muamba , apart from sending my best wishes to everyone concerned , there is nothing else to say.
Cometh the hour cometh the man! Our no 7 is the new saviour of the ~Arsenal midfield. Long may he reign!
Steve,stop looking at the negatives.
We held on to RVP for longer with no guarantee of a return to top form, and its turned out ok.
Patience is a virtue.
Hi Steve, Adam, Potter and Wavy….
Steve, Rosicky is on fire….
Morning Scott, When Rosiski has played as long as Robin has and kept his form i will be the first to praise him 3 or 4 games tells me nothing. but the last few years have.
But Wenger can only judge Rosicky on how he is playing now, he’s been fit and healthy for a while and the departure of Cesc has opened up the door for him and he’s taken that second chance.
He’s an experienced player with a great attitude and i’m chuffed he’s signed a two year deal, having a player like him in the squad is paramount imho..
Agree that AW keeps hole of players who he shouldn’t at times, but imho, Rosicky doesn’t fall into that catagory.
Arshavin though is different, he has all the talent in the world yet he is so so lazy, and his attiude on the pitch sets a bad example…
I’d be disappointed if we offered him a new deal…
We ahve all cried out for experience to be signed, well we have just signed exactly that 🙂
Hi Rico, Steve, Adam, Potter and Kev.
Tragic sad news about Fabrice. Let’s all pray that he pulls through, at times like this football just becomes insignificant.
With regards Rosicky, having had so many injuries, it must have been just as frustrating for him not being able to show what he was really capable of. Maybe now he’ll get a run and start to enjoy his football once again. On his day, he really is an exciting, technically sound, hard working player, who brings others into play and can knock in the important goal from time to time. So here’s hoping that he remains injury free for the next 2 years…..
Don’t get me wrong Rico, i love the fact that Toms playing well i love to see that drive and determination and credit to him. Cesc and Nas went a long time ago now and we have only seen Tom play well for a handfull of games, all i’m saying is that if he continues for the the next 10 games the same then i would have signed him then thats all.
Morning Marinello, my sentiments exactly
Steve,I know what you’re saying, but time will tell.
Lets hope retaining him pays half the dividend RVP has.
Hi Marinello,
In hindsight i should have posted something more fitting for Fabrice….
Sorry guys…
Great post AK…..not a good day for me today, but my thoughts are with Fabrice & his family!!! Come on, pull through Fabrice!!!!!
With you there Scott 🙂
Good Morning All You Gooners.
Thanks for the positive vibes on the post.
Now all we need is some good news from The London Chest Hospital. I know it well!
Morning Rico.
Great bit of sub-editing there boss. 🙂 😉 😉
I think credit must go to Spurs and Howard Webb for their conduct in a very trying situation, also.
Not often we Gooners can say that, but their actions were impeccable
Back to TR7….I train greyhounds, and I tell you,its easy to keep a fit dog fit and healthy.
Once they cop an injury,no matter how minor, the odds of other injuries popping up are mulitiplied greatly.
I am saying, maybe hoping, that now Tomas is fit and healthy, its a good chance he will stay that way.
Lets hope so.
I know Steve, we just now need him to stay fit 😉
Morning AK, sorry i didn’t see your email earlier 🙁
Ditto re the news from the hospital, he’s a young fit, strong lad, lets hope that brings him through all this….
For those that want to know more about Fabrice Muambahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabrice_Muamba
Hi Lee,
Having lost my Mum when I was 32, I know how difficult today will be for you, so soon after the passing away of your Mum. Life can appear to be so terribly cruel and unfair at times, but your Mum knew how much you loved her, and today will be tough for you, but you will cope, because you have to, and because she would have wanted that.
Take care now.
Marinello.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabrice_Muamba
No probs boss.
It doesn’t matter really.
We must must just put our faith in the wonderfully skilled hands of our NHS people.
Having been in their care a few years ago, i know how fantastic they are.
We are so lucky to have them, despite the odd scare story.
Yeah, thinking of you to Lee…
Time is a great healer, although it won’t seem like that at the moment…
Chin up.
Scott, 10.38;
It’s games mate, the more regular TR7 plays, the more attuned to the pace of the game his body becomes and the less likely he is to sustain injuries.
When you are in and out of the side you are more likely to pick up muscle strains and pulls, eg Diaby.
Well said Marinello…..
Be strong Lee….
Kev,
Great post and great comment about the NHS. The people who work for it are a special breed and often go the extra mile or two to make a difference.
Fabrice is in the best trained hands.
Agree AK, I won’t ask though… 😉
Good sentiments there Marinello.
Maybe that has been the problem with Diaby and his injuries, how many times have we heard the ‘he needs a run in the side’..
If he can be fit and stay fit this time maybe he will but it’s hard to see how or why AW would break up this winning team…
Defo Marinello, i luv ’em to bits….
They saved my bacon, that’s for sure.
Rico. 😉
Hospital are about to give an update on Fabrice…
Rico, Diaby has never been a great favourite of mine, even when he’s been fit, on the odd occassions.
But it does make me wonder, when you consider how great RVP has been with a full season behind him, and then recently TR7 playing in his preferred position and also staying fit, how effective Diaby could be if he had a season like RVP..?
That is a regular game and injury free.
Hospital confirm that Fabrice suffered Cardiac Arrest on the pitch and remains in a critical condition.
Tottenham fans have been to the hospital leaving flowers and best wishes..
Again, credit where credits due to Spurs and their fans.
The entire crowd sang their hearts out in support, regardless of which jersey they wore.
AK, he’s no favourite of mine either, i still blame him for the 4-4 at St James, but yes you could be right but my own view is that he has lost confidence and maybe scared to tackle after his injury…
That as we all know can cause more harm in it’s self..
I still think his head and feet don’t won’t together….
Arsenal staff praise Fabrice Muamba as a ‘genuine, warm boy’
Emotions at the Bolton player’s former club are fraught after hearing the news of his collapse

News of Fabrice Muamba’s collapse was being digested around the football world on Saturday, and for some who remember him as an 11-year-old boy knocking on the door of Arsenal’s academy out of the blue and asking for a trial, emotions were particularly fraught.
Muamba was a conscientious boy living in Walthamstow, East London, not long arrived in London as a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo when he began to be noticed for his footballing ability. There was interest from Wimbledon, but Muamba was set on Arsenal, so one day he just walked through the gates of their academy at Hale End.
David Court, the club’s assistant head of youth development, remembers it clearly. “We are not in the business of offering trials to everyone who wants one, but he had such a nice and persuasive manner we gave him a chance,” he recalls. “He is one of those kids that has such desire, you want to see them succeed. He would do things other boys wouldn’t dream of doing. He always wanted to improve himself.
“He is such a genuine boy, and such a warm boy, with a very good family ethic. He came from such a serious situation in the Congo he got indefinite leave to stay. Then he got his British passport and British citizenship. He was different as a young boy, having come from Africa, but he was prepared to stand apart from the crowd. He had a little bit of gravitas about him. He was not someone who thinks he’s special.”
Court remembers only ever having one cross word with Muamba during his time at Arsenal. “We asked him to play centre-half and he pulled a face, so we told him to go inside if he didn’t want to play,” he says. “Then, about five minutes later he came back and said: ‘I am ever so sorry.’ Everybody really loved him. Everybody thought he was a smashing kid.”
As soon as he became a professional, Muamba bought a house for his parents. There was scarce evidence of the flash side of young footballers that does not always have the best reputation these days. His sheer determination to do well stood him in good stead when it became apparent he was unlikely to make it at Arsenal long term. He went for a loan period to Birmingham City, alongside two other academy graduates, Nicklas Bendtner and Sebastian Larsson, and played a big part in Birmingham winning promotion that year.
“That was the making of him,” Court says. “He has always been grateful for that chance he had. And there wasn’t a time when we played Birmingham or Bolton when he didn’t come over and throw his arms around us.”
Court was, naturally, profoundly worried when he heard of Muamba’s plight. He explains that all the academy players are routinely screened to check for heart defects. “Fabrice would have been screened before taking up his scholarship. England always screen their players too [Muamba represented his new country at junior levels up to the under-21 level]. But they should do it annually. The experts suggest it is not sufficient once.”
Muamba remains at the forefront of everybody’s mind lucky enough to know him.
For twenty odd minutes Liverpool,Diaby took control.
Imagine him fit, healthy and playing a fill game.
It will happen……have we all got the patience?
According to BBC 5Live, the hospital have him sedated and under intensive care.
The next 24 hours are crucial.
Scott, put’s football in it’s place…..
The patience with Diaby, well that is down to Wenger and I think he’ll stand by him for a few years yet….
Can’t disagree with you re: Newcastle game Rico.
Phillipe Auclair, the French journo, says that his broken ankle at Sunderland almost destroyed his career.
So as you say, it’s between his ears that is the problem.
Similar to Ramsey i suppose, who has struggled at times in the physical side of games, imo.
At least Aaron has stayed fit enough to get some games behind him and thus his confidence has grown.
Rico, i think that Diaby is under contract with us until 2015.

In that case AK, he’ll be with us for another four seasons 😉
Have to go off for a while guys, back later this afternoon, all the best to Fabrice, have a good day all….
Yeah, see ya lata boss.
I’m offski to.
Boo!!
So sad about Muamba. So young and still so ouch to look forward, to! 🙁 I really hope he pulls through.
Top write, Kev. I’ve always liked Tommy and am very happy to have him around. For the young ones, it’s always reassuring to have an older head around. Plus, he can get stuck in, and we may not have enough of the type.
AK,I reckon Ramsey just runs himself into the ground.
I honestly think he’s been too hellbent on showing he can replace Cesc, and the sooner he realises he’s a totally different player, the better.
We only need to wait a few years for Cesc’s replacement.
He’s an Aussie kid….his through ball yesterday was sublime.
The 11 goals weren’t bad,wither.
The proud dads coming out again lol.
Diaby seems to me to have all the ingredients for a class act. The only thing missing is game time and his injuries have meant that the final piece of the jigsaw has never quite fitted. That unspeakable bloke, was it Smith?, who shattered his ankle must be feeling quite chuffed with himself while working at his call-centre job. It is easy to make Diaby the butt of jokes and I have done so too but, let’s see him when fit and take it from there.
Agag, its funny, but about 4 or 5 weeks ago,I targetted Rosicky as a guy who’d lose the ball AMD mot chase back.
Oh,what a month can so.
He’s outstanding now.
Good morning Guys and Chicks of the Gunners’ Faith.
Back from a 1-1 draw in what was a very cracking game where only the width of the bar and post plus two good goalkeepers stopped the score from being 3-3.
Goody for you Sir AK. I knew that Muamba would have been included into today’s post. And well done for Rosicky praise. He deserves it.
Pa was happy he spoke to you today.
Devil,do you need a striker lol???
Devil. You probably need Chamakh to convert those half-chances and turn a draw into a win.
Adam,I was offering someone who can actually find the back of the net.
He’s only 6,but he scored more yesterday than any player, other than RVP has all season.
No mate. I am proud of what I have. Both teams were good today, and I mean all the players played a cracking game with both goals coming from crosses and first time shots. The result was a just one. My problem this year is a weight and height problem. Technically the 16 year olds are very good, but we lack a height presence around the team in various departments and we usually struggle against taller team. And we do seem to get tired around the latter stages of the game. We like to press all over starting from the attack and that does take its toll.
This year we have not done so well in the league (we are second bdw) due to the large amount of drawn games.
Scott, he’s one of my favorites. I am also a big fan of Eduardo. I like the really technical ones. I never wanted either sold. But I guess, Dudu had to go. Or maybe, I like the habitues of the sick room. Lol. Scott, wouldn’t it be endlessly exciting if yur son made it at our club??
Hi, Adam and Dev. 🙂
Just joking Devil……just rapping my boy.
Did you read my post yesterday at all?
First up for my kids this season, they were awesome.
Agag,I’ve got my fingers crossed he goes on with it.
I am no doubt biased, but he’s the best kid of his age I’ve ever seen.
He genuinely hit eleven yesterday In thirty minutes, and laid the final pass for a few more.
The entire side did well, and I am trying to keep my son and myself grounded on this, but his ball control and vision for his age is just incredible.
His other asset is his will to win,and this is something I don’t push, but certainly don’t discourage.
Sorry if I’m Raving, but I’m drained from discussing the other, distressing topic at hand.
maturing like a fine wine, or just playing in his preferred position?
Evening Alan.
Fine wine, right position and fit……great combination.
I’m feeling special tonight.
Little fella has fallen asleep with mum,so I’m in the Arsenal bed.
What a sight it makes lol.
That’s it for me.
Good night all.
I hope there’s some positive news to be had in the morning.
It’s alright to rave, Scott!! At least, it’s over something meaningful, i.e.: a future Gunner. That’s thrilling to hear. Whenever I see friends who are new parents; I must admit, I’m bored to death when they start talking about how smart the baby must be cos she/he can say “goo-goo” or “ga-ga”. Haha. I am awful I know. 😉 😀
I remember a couple of years ago chatting to Terry Neil about what makes a good player. He said that 50% of what is required is all in the head. If the confidence goes, players stop looking for the ball and if they do get it, they get rid of it quickly. Diaby needs a run of games without sustaining any niggling injuries and hopefully the confidence will return. He’s still only young, and Wenger has always seen something in him that at times is lost on me, but I have seen moments of sheer quality from him, and maybe when the confidence returns, he can grow and play without that fear that the next tackle could put him out again. He certainly has all the physical attributes, height, strength, speed etc to make his mark, he just needs to feel right in the head dept.
Marinello…..football is 99% in the head and 1% in the feet.
Righto….off for now. Time to go out with the family.
later mates
Diaby should be made captain of the reserves and play as many minutes as possible away from the glare of the first team. Let him get a dozen of those under his belt and if he survives bring him back then.
Rosicky is Cesz captain. Don’t forget we have an european cup on June/July. For Cesz republic, it will be the end of a the survivors of a great generation of footballers. After this, I don’t know whow will be Rosicky fit for the next two years. I’m agree with Palmer1
Pray for Muamba.
Crouchie 🙂
Afternoon guys and gals…
good afternoon
Hi JM, lucky dippers then……
yes, it’s true.
We must wait for wednesday.
No more news from Muamba?
Morning all.
Can’t sleep,so why fight it?
Lay on the edge of the bed Scott, you’ll soon drop off !
I’ll try that Micko!!!
Any updates on Muambo yet?
This post has me thinking Rosicky has signed a contract extension at the beginning of March, why hasn’t RVP done the same.
He hasn’t come out with any shite like I just wanna concentrate on my football and at the end of the season we will sit down and discuss my future.
If Holland and RVP have a great tournament in the summer I can see trouble ahead.
Mucko, hopefully his not signing is simply a spur on to get Arsenal signing quality players.
Hopefully….
Hi Scott, Micko..
Fabrice is still critical but i think that is the ‘norm’ after suffering CA, tomorrow we will hopefully hear more positive news…..
Micko, good point raised there but maybe he knows what he will be doing already and loves all the media crap, he’s staying…. 😉
Scott, no news, the hospital have put him into an induced coma, will know more in the morning i guess.
You guys see that some ‘dick’ tweeted nasty stuff about Fabrice, he’s been nicked!
Well that contract has been on the table for a long while now rico, could be a few twists and turns yet.
I know more about stuffing owls than I do about tweeting but you have to be a real low life or scumbag to be doing things like that.
I blame Dein Micko, isn’t he RvP’s agent?
Stan Collymore dobbed him in, and urged others to do the same …
Scumbag indeed, the lowest of the low…..
Yeah, he’s had a big say in some of our players destinations over the last few seasons hasn’t he.
Good week ahead, bank holiday tomorrow and then I’m over for villa game on Saturday, they soon come around.
Considering he’s his fathers son, he’s not done us too many favours has he……
You should have made it a week’s trip, popped up to scouser land on wednesday, huge game micko and one we need to win….
Villa at home, on paper should be 3 points, but……
Players agents equals scum.
I was hoping to take in a champions league quarter final as well but we won’t go into that.
Never get an easy game at Goodison, it’s always tough up there, didn’t Moyles rest a few players this weekend as well, another smash and grab wouldn’t go amiss.
Scott, that’s mostly what they are, leeches.
Catch you tomorrow guys.
Spot on Scott…
That’s me for the day guys, you all be safe and enjoy the rest of your day/evening/night…
I’ll be offski and saying a prayer for Fabrice, here’s hoping for some positive news tomorrow…
Nighty night all……
Night Rico.
Day ends there,starts here.
Nice early start at work.
Evening Gooners.
Is it Micko or Mucko….???? 🙂
Night Scott..
Hi AK, and Nighty AK, sorry again about today 🙁
Gone now….
Mick where are you having a drink before the Villa game.
I’ll be in the 12 Pins, Finsbury Park.
Ah, no probs Rico, it don’t matter.
As long as Fab recovers, that’s important… 🙂
Scott, make sure your on here Weds’.
Mind the floor when you drop off….
Sorry about that Micko…..thanks for alerting eveyone AK lol.
I’m awaiting the game eagerly.
Just need to organise work around it.
Scott i’m just listening to an Aussie rock-band on You tube…
Who AK????
Geez, they must be good AK…….who is it?
Wenger gives Rosicky a two year contract at over 30, but would not Pires. Rosicky, after years of contributing nothing (not all his own fault due to injury) has a couple of decent games and gets 2 years. Pires in 2006, after years of brilliance for AFC, gets offered one year and so leaves. I cannot think of a more telling example of how Wenger has lost the plot over the years. I count down the time until he leaves and we start again.
Jekyll,you’re kidding.
Why wouldn’t you believe Wenger has learnt from past mistakes???
Seems pretty obvious.
Wenger learn from past mistakes? You are kidding. He’s not one for that. He would not have been repeating season after season as he has done if he did. I just think he’s become ever more fiercely stubborn and loyal to the players he has in the face of it all not working out and the criticism he receives. Hence a contract extension for Djourou. Hence 2 years for Rosicky.
You’re entitled to be wrong lol.
STOP WITH THE 2 YEAR CONTRACT FOR A 30YEAR OLD.
If you look at most of the contracts dished out to players most of them receive a 4year contract between 27 and 29 which means that there contract nearly always runs out beyond 30years old. So many people get this wrong including Highbury House (unfortunately) most players at approx 28 get a 4 year deal that end when they are 32 and then the 1year contract starts….come on…dont just believe everything the red tops say…look at the facts. peace out gooners
Here ya go Scott….. Aussie lead & bassist guitarists. Started out in Oz.
Morning all.
I doubt whether Wenger had offered 3 or 4-year contract to 28-year-old Arsenal players unless you are in the marquee class of Vieira, Henry, Pires and Sol Campbell.
Bergy was on a one-year rolling contract with an option of automatic renewal subject to performance on the pitch.
The idea of offering 28 year old marquee players a 4-year deal is to protect their “resale value”.
Above average players like Wiltord, Edu, Kanu, Flamini, et al are just allowed to walk away on a Bosman with Wenger refusing to bow to their wage demands.
If you recalled that Jose Reyes had just signed a contract extension, only for Real to come a-tapping and turned his head…
Henry had just signed a new cotnract..which did not worked out due to domestic stifle…
Pires wanted a 2-year contract which Wenger refused and offered him, like Bergy, a one-year rolling contract depending on performances.
Gilberto?
Well, he was really unhappy after being overlooked for the captiancy and allowed to leave on a nominal transfer fee..
Overall, from 1996/97 to 2011/12, did Arsene Wenger really made an overall profit in all his player transfer dealings since he arrived in September 1996?
Did he really made mistakes in offering above average salary to above-average player like Djourou?
Is it because Wenger did it to counter any agent in invoking the “Webster clause” such that even if Arsenal loses the case in COurt of Law, Arsenal will be compensated decently as the disgruntled player will has to buyout the remnants of his contract?
New Post up guys…
