Morning all.
Arsenal fans joined in with the words of Louis Dunford for the first time on Sunday afternoon. It’s our new anthem apparently and will be played before kick-off at The Emirates from now on. If Sunday is anything to go by, the more it’s played, the louder the fans will become. Could it turn out to be our very own version of ‘Ferry Across The Mersey’ – yes, that’s deliberate. Will the fans still be singing the lyrics in 50 years time?
Well, do you like it? I do.
Apart from great football and results, Arsenal have lacked an anthem. Everton have the old Z Cars theme, West Ham are forever blowing bubbles and as said, Liverpool have Gerry and his Pacemakers playing away. At Arsenal, I’ve heard Elvis and Donna Summer (great artist) among others who I can’t remember right now but I reckon this is the best I’ve heard for a while and the artist Louis Dunford, is Arsenal through and through.
This time of year the transfer rumours start to gather pace. Erling Haaland is expected to join Man City as Brussia Dortmund announced they’ve let him go off and sort out “personal business” and his arrival this summer could just end the City careers of Raheem Sterling or Gabriel Jesus. Perhaps both. Arsenal have been linked with both. Jesus awhile ago, Sterling this morning in The Mail. The same paper suggests Eddie Nketiah would be perfect for West Ham. Of course he would but he’s perfect for Arsenal too. Arsenal will be in Europa, perhaps even the Champions League and we have a young squad which should only get stronger and better – does he want to be a part of that, or go somewhere else and start over again? Only he knows. Mikel Arteta has publicly admitted he mucked up with Eddie, maybe that’s enough to convince him to stay.
Another near muck up was Mo Elneny. I watched a video of him being interviewed on YouTube yesterday during which he talked about his loan, being told by Arsenal to find another club, pre-season just afterwards followed by a total u-turn on his future. Mikel Arteta wanted him to stay and he did. The interview is HERE if you’re interested.
Thank goodness he did, Nkeitiah too.
I watched the other video on Untold which I assume is the official release one . I have to say i found it emotional , It took me back to the London I grew up in . Obviously there were actors but in them i saw my Parents and theirs , I saw my uncles and the kids i went to school with who later took their places on the North bank . It took me back to my North London upbringing in Kentish Town . I hope it catches on and stays .
Despite it not being open the transfer window negotiations are already off and running , we need to be at the front of the queue and Thursday night is pivotal to that . A win and we have the pinnacle to offer , a draw and we are treading water , and a loss ? don’t want to think about it .
Good Morning Rico and all
Its a pleasure Rico. That has made my day. I really appreciated that.
Personally I do hope that both Nketiah and Elneny stay. But we still have to get at least another forward and a midfielder. I would love to say a winger as well but with Reiss Nelson coming back I am holding my thoughts on that because Nelson might turn out to be a late developer and come on the scene and make his mark.
As you pointed out in your post, Stirling and Jesus have been mentioned. I dont think we will get both but if we do we simply have to move on Pepe, because that would simply give us an attack of Martinelli, Nketiah, Saka, Nelson, Jesus and Stirling. ESR can rotate with Odegaard. And that will be the attack sorted. No place for Pepe and if Arteta follows his desire even Balogun will have to go on loan again.
It’s a pretty decent tune I reckon. There’s a lot of mixed opinion in the crowd, so it might take a while to catch on. We could do with an ‘Arsenal song’.
It’s got be a better bet than Sweet Caroline that has been beaten to death over the past year.
Other songs I recall played regularly:
– Move on Up – Curtis Mayfield – Happy song, hard to sing along to
– The Wonder of You – Elvis Presley – Never a football tune. Painful
– Right here, Right now – Fat Boy Slim – Powerful tune, but not a sing-a-long
– A Team theme tune – Very popular for a while
– Good Old Arsenal – A fine effort by Jimmy Hill. Still sung from time to time
The unofficial anthem for years has been ‘So Paddy got up’ – gets a good airing away from home usually. Very easy to sing along to. Not certain of the origins of this one, but has been around since I started attending games in the 80’s.
I’ll whisper it here, but there was a time when most team’s fans used to sing ‘You’ll never walk alone’. A truly brilliant terrace tune brought from the musical scene and popularised by Gerry Marsden. Only Liverpool and Celtic use it now.
With regards the midfield we already have Partey and Xhaka plus Sambi lokonga. If Elneny is re-signed then that is 4 players who play in front of the defence. Tielemans will improve our defensive department definitely but we have to wait and see.
The defence is settled and I dont expect there will be wholesale changes except Saliba, Ballard coming in. I dont think Soares will leave….he will stay and retire here. The only change I might see is that of Tavares being sold/loaned and Aaron Hickey bought.
Morning Rico and all
Great interview with Elneny It just shows how much love he has for the game and the club. He would be good to have around the really young kids at our academy when he retires.
Devil the thing that worries me in the idea that ESR can rotate with Odegaard is that ESR will leave . Already i think that his progress has stalled because Odegaard is Arteta’s favourite getting the 10 minute cameo is not good either for him or he club.
Pete the trouble is that not enough of the home support know it . It needs to be played over and over and over again if you get my drift.
It started when the M1 was being built and lots of Murphy’s boys were building it and for their football fix they picked the Arsenal rather than the other lot..
I think it starts “” When Paddy came over from Ireland ” I first heard it in the Plimsoll Arms now called the Auld triangle along with The Eton boating song parody . Singing up the atmosphere in the pubs was a feature before games at Highbury in the 60’s .
Concerning the Durnsford song, I saw what looked like a more personal video by the singer, with lots of home video, Chapel Market, The Cally, Upper St, Essex Road, Pie & Mash shop, the working class council estates that are disappearing thanks to the Middle Class Liberal gentrification of the area and a lot of Cockney working class people, it reminded me of Newington Green and Dalston before the Media Classes moved in and affordable housing became £1m/£2m plus.
Good morning all, Arsenal anthem? Pure schmaltz! Not for me, sorry. .
The Haaland deal as reported in The Telegraph. £64 million buy out fee. 5 year contract costing around £107 million. Fees to agents, representatives and assorted other costs £42 million. Total cost £213 million. An obscene amount of money that City must be made to disclose the source from which it comes.
Morning Rico. Interesting song, made entirely where I came from. Kev, Islington’s always had that mix of classes, though you’re right in that a lot of the superb houses that my old mates had flats in have been snapped up by the Giles and Allegras of this world.
It must, in all fairness, be said though that Tottenham has more fried chicken shops per head than anywhere else in the world. There’s a message there.
Just listen to the song above didn’t like it too many swearing words and mostly boring can’t see it lifting the players during a game.
Good morning all!
I’ve been following Arsenal but I’ve been very busy and haven’t posted anything.
Yes Adam, I agree up to a point, places like Canonbury Square, Thornhill Road, Arundel Square, Hemingford Road were for everyone, not anymore I’m afraid they’re full of media. types, civil servants and journalists who send their children to private schools and despise the working class who they claim to care about.

Kev. It’s always been an interesting borough with a broad mix of people.
I wouldn’t mind moving back if I could afford it. 😀
Not my cup of tea anymore though , on my trips down to London I have to say that I am kind of relieved when I get past Stansted on the way back . I went up to Hampstead a few years ago and didn’t recognise the place . The high street was completely different and all the remaining pubs are now gastro even the Flask which was the last bastion of spit and sawdust has changed . Very much the latte and coffee shop set rather than the pint in half a dozen of the twenty four pubs that used to be in the square mile .
Any how I can’t afford it and neither can any of the guys in my old Gospel Oak sunday league first , second and third teams . Not one of us lives there now . Sad in a way.
There’s no doubt Islington has changed dramatically over the last 30 odd years. The area around Highbury was pretty run down when I first started going regularly. Different story now.
If you’re looking for a spit and sawdust boozer there are still plenty in the area. Here’s a few highlights:
– Kings Head on Blackstock Road – If you stand still too long you’ll stick to the carpet. Proverbial sh!th0le
– Green Man on Essex Road – If karaoke and retired villains is your thing…
😂
@Potter I remember going in the Flask a good few years back with some friends. Huge Man United flag on one of the walls. Took an instant dislike to it and we moved on after one drink.
Loving the Islington stereotypes from Kev & Adam. 🤣 I do know some media types that have moved there recently.
If you do want to experience the good old days of run down housing, street gangs and dodgy boozers head up the Seven Sisters Road to Spurs. The area is 💩. No wonder they built the toilet there.
Moving back to Islington is a nice thought Adam, what about Swan Yard?
I still feel at home if I’m passing through Matthias Road, not that you can get anywhere these days, not with with the insane and excessive road closures brought about by the crazies on the local council.
Kev. Who could forget Swan Yard?
Never used to be Pete ,just goes to show who has taken my old manor over now. Used to be a regular trip after a game at Highbury back to Hampstead heath station . Pint in the freemasons then up to the Rosslyn , King of bohemia , Bird in Hand , The Flask then the White bear and back down the hill to the Railway Tavern and home again. then up for Sunday football. Happy days.
@Kev I know somebody that had a flat in Newington Green. Sold up recently and moved further north into Essex. Outrageous price for a small place.
I suppose if people are willing to pay the stupid prices and others are willing to take them…
Manchester City’s most expensive signings
Jack Grealish £100m
Kevin de Bruyne £68m
Ruben Dias £61m
Riyad Mahrez £61m
Joao Cancelo £58.5m
Aymeric Laporte £58.5m
Raheem Sterling £57.3m
Rodri £56.4m
Benjamin Mendy £51.7m
Erling Haaland £51.2m
It’s good to see how respectful of FFP they are…
Supply and demand Pete, whilst not forgetting how estate agents continually ramp up prices, it’s all a racket really, that allied to the continuing legal scandal that is the sale of council properties and forcing housing associations to do the same.
Transfer rumours will be rife now that Haaland is moving to Man City, nobody is paying big money for Kane now so well done Daniel Levy, Sterling and Jesus will be linked with everyone and their dog, Newcastle are in for everyone with a pulse, Chelsea are haemorrhaging players, Man Utd are just Man Utd all piss and wind and Arsenal are apparently being outbid for everyone even if we aren’t in for them, well it bullshit galore on Football.London and all the other pointless clickbaiters. Roll on August 31st as it’s boring me already…
Elneny has agreed a deal in principal to join Galatasaray.
Seville want Pepe for around £25 million.
Cheer up Kev, it is the Beautiful Game after all. 😉
Good luck to Mo if he’s off, and Pepe.
Morning all.
