Great expectations for Arsenal FC as Arsene Wenger ‘will’ change and he ‘will’ spend big on players…

Morning all.

This time last year, many of us remained hopeful that we’d start the new season with a different manager at the helm despite Arsene Wenger having one more year left on his contract. It wasn’t to be but there was a light at the end of the tunnel regardless as surely at his age, the last season really was going to be his last season. With that in mind, I personally expected very little activity in the summer transfer window as his final year approached yet the Frenchman had other ideas as splashed the cash.

Granit Xhaka arrived quite early on and he was followed by Rob Holding, Takuma Asano, Skokran Mustafi and finally, Lucas Perez.

Asano went straight out on loan, Mustafi was soon into the first team, Xhaka followed but young Rob Holding had to wait for a long while before he got a good run in the side. In fact other than the League Cup, I don’t think he started a game until the final dice was thrown by Wenger late in the season. Perez, well I think he was dumped on the empty naughty step which Lukas Podolski had vacated just a couple of years ago. Such a waste of a player who when he did finally get a game or two, looked quite exciting…..

The season started dreadfully. A mixture of injuries and Euro hangovers saw a depleted side fielded for the opening two fixtures and to little surprise, we’d dropped five points at the end of them. We were in for a long season ahead…

But then Chelsea rocked up at The Emirates and we sent them packing with their tail between their legs. 3-0 and a superb home performance. A little bit of hope was restored, but not for long. The following weeks and months played out as so many before them had, but this time, there was to be no big recovery after Christmas and the New Year. Barring two FA Cup victories over a couple of lower league clubs in the FA Cup, we were awful. Wenger looked out of ideas, the fans had turned on him and even the players looked lost, fed up and clueless. Top four was pretty much gone, Champions League survival certainly had as Bayern embarrassed us over two legs and Arsene Wenger was struggling. Not only on the pitch either. As each press conference came and went, nothing that was said was new. Watching him squirm was awful to say the least.

A last throw of the dice came as Arsene Wenger switched to three at the back. Some might say it was a master stroke as things improved, certainly the results but imo, it was good fortune, perhaps luck. Please don’t anyone try and convince me that the changes were planned, or part of some kind of stroke of genius because it wasn’t. There was no other option left. Do something, anything and three at the back was his way forward. Yes, I did just type forward!

Conte needed just one hefty to defeat to change his side. Arsene Wenger has taken…. how many years? Conte has played that system before I hear you say so it was nothing new, but then so has Wenger, about twenty years ago. Oh those days eh when he breezed in and signed some very special players…

That renewed hope of light at the end of the Arsene Wenger tunnel this summer turned out to be just some b*****d with a torch, a torch with batteries in desperate need of changing. Two more years secured.

But it’s not just about signing players is it as to be victorious in life, one has to have a plan, to be prepared for each and every eventuality which could head your way. In football or any other sport it’s about knowing your opposition, their strengths, weaknesses and how to nullify or exploit both. It’s about having the best tools to hand and knowing how to handle to them in order to achieve maximum results. After all, you wouldn’t equip yourself with a large fork in order to whip up 100 meringues for a dinner party would you? And you certainly wouldn’t try and make them without a recipe either. What if the first batch didn’t turn out right, carry on regardless or try something different?

But that’s exactly what Arsene Wenger has been doing for years imo. Trying to play the same way regardless of who we face or what players he has. Some he doesn’t even bother playing, others he just plays because he wants to and because he can. He’s not ruthless either when it comes to benching players because of poor form and he certainly allows too many a big contract when they barely deserve a small one. Oh, and how many of us have written the line ‘we don’t play to his strengths’ when Ollie has be ineffective during a game because we can’t cross a ball?

We as a club have drifted along for far too long now and as much as I hope that the penny has dropped, not only for the way we play football this coming season and the ambition we show in this current transfer window, I truly expect to see very little different to what we’ve seen before.

Yes, Arsene may have switched his tactics which improved us but I suspect many other, if not most will follow suit as and when required over the season ahead but as the likes of Conte, Guardiola, Mourinho, Poch and even Klopp and Koeman chop, change and refresh their squads and tactics over the next few weeks and months, dear old Arsene will be sat thinking he’s cracked it!

Him with his extra two or three new signings…….

If he really wants to crack the league next year and to be lifting that big trophy one more time then he seriously needs to get rid of a few passengers and add some top top quality to what’s left of the squad. Only by doing that will he have a chance as his tactics won’t bear fruit in the league or Europe otherwise they would have by now.

What he needs in this squad is leaders, big players and passionate players who want to win. That together with some top quality is his and our only hope and Manu Petit reckons that might just happen:

I’m sure Wenger and Arsenal are willing to change things by putting money on the table to bring in players with a winning mentality. Petit told Sky Sports News HQ.

I’m sure some players will come in soon and next season will be totally different for Wenger and Arsenal.

Wake up Manu, wake up……

I guess we’ve just gotta see how the season unfolds and if 3 at the back from the off, gets us back up there with the pacesetters, it’s a tactic that certainly seems to suit our players.

Good post Rico, was it sponsored btw?
The link to the betting website, which I avoided, made me wonder… ?

    Morning All

  2. allezkev says:

There was a time, not that long ago – pre-Kroenke – when Arsenal competed with Man Ure for the top players that were on the market, now it seems that Arsenal are shopping in the same place and competing with Everton and Spuds.

All I ever read about is Arsenal chasing this player and that player and the clubs we’re fighting with for them are Tottenham and Everton.

Chelsea, City and Utd seem to shop at another level…

  3. allezkev says:

Just had a look on NewsNow and who the hell is Perrie Edwards and why is this bint always appearing on a football blog?
I have no idea what she looks like and couldn’t care less but it just goes to show what morons they think we are…

  4. rico says:

Morning Kev, just the one line was sponsored… 🙂

Perri Edwards is the girlfriend of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and they’ve just flown off on holiday together…

  5. Afc says:

If arsenal go huge in this window and bring in a top striker, a replacement for cazorla and a beast DM we will surely fight for the league title.

  6. allezkev says:

Thanks for that Rico, Its good to know that Oxlade-Chamberlain is having a nice holiday. ?

    From Jeorge Bird:
Calum Chambers played the full game as England commenced their U21 European Championship campaign with a goalless draw against holders Sweden today.

England had goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to thank for saving a penalty from former Arsenal trialist Linus Wahlqvist.

Chambers made some impressive interventions at the back but his Arsenal team-mate Rob Holding was an unused substitute

Meanwhile, Krystian Bielik was an unused substitute as hosts Poland were beaten 2-1 by Slovakia.

Hector Bellerin’s Spain face Macedonia tomorrow.

  7. rico says:

Trouble is Afc, that’s a big if. But yes, we’d be in with a shout if AW can get the best out of them..

I’d like an out an out winger too, but perhaps I’m greedy…

Blame the press Kev, they are always after a snap this time of year.

Did you see Everton are interested in signing Chambers?

  8. Malaysian gunner says:

Now that the fm has been given a 2 year deal,he better shw he can do the business.
I say top the pretty soccer and go straight to scoring goals.

  9. gnarleygeorge9 says:

If Mbappe comes on board, there will be nothing pretty about swift counters, more calculated assassination of the opposition?

Like I’ve said b4. When Arsene had Thierry in his holster, the sky was the limit, apart from when his goal keeper was sent off. Then Old Frenchie was forced into austerity. Stan must give Arsene an ‘open cheque book’ to get Mbappe to The Arsenal, so that he can win the PL, EL, FA Cup, CL & Milk Cup so that Arsene can then finally ride off into the sunset (which might well be Cornwall from all accounts ?).

Stan, you deep pocketed, short armed Yank, pull your finger out & buy Mbappe!!!!!!

  10. allezkev says:

Yeah, I did see that Rico, Everton are certainly getting their business done early.
I wouldn’t let Chambers leave this summer unless we got a fantastic offer.

We don’t know how much longer BFG can go on, after such injury issues and Koscielny needs to be rotated more often to protect him from being overplayed, so to me Chambers is an important part of our squad, unless Wenger brings in another centre-back.

Bielik could be ready in 12 months time, but it’s the here and now that Wenger needs to focus on.

  11. Meerkat says:

Morning rico and other posters. A sweltering day here in the SE.

Isn’t it annoying though that clubs have to go huge and pay ridiculous money for players? Everyone rates these so-called top managers, but really? They can’t manage to coach or bring players through themselves, so they have to poach the best from every European club, that someone else has nurtured and developed.
Why on earth after all these years aren’t our academies bringing enough players through that we don’t need to nick someone else’s? We must all be doing something very wrong.

In an ideal situation Le Prof has the right idea in refusing to be drawn into auctions, but this I’m afraid has gone too far and he has to accept it isn’t, and never will be an ideal world in football.

£100 million for Southampton players? it’s a joke. Christ where will it end?

I see Ronaldo is ‘upset’ at being charged with Tax avoidance. LOL. You couldn’t make it up. The best players in the world,(multi-millionaires) and still they have to fiddle their tax. Unbelievable. Yet the fans still worship them!!

After all that though, I’m still scanning the transfer news every day hoping we have bagged one of these Gods, LOL.
I see Le Prof has gone to Lyon with an improved offer for Lacazette. Is he worth it? the jury is still out if you believe all you read, so is he another waste of space?
I suppose my main disappointment at the club, is that the backroom staff remain, along with the manager. Do they really believe anything will change? The players themselves must now get bored with the same things being said in training, day after day.

The club need a new owner and a new broom to sweep that stale lot out, but sadly, it won’t happen any time soon and I fear mid-table beckons this season. I hope I’m wrong.

  12. rico says:

Mbappe, Alexis, Perez, Ozil – could be quite an exciting attack… 🙂

They were always going to Kev, as we know, Usmanov’s mate clearly wanted to do what he’s he’s doing there, here at Arsenal but we were dumped with the Septic who couldn’t give a toot.

Chambers is a tough one. He always looks a bit lightweight to me and doesn’t have the spirit which Holding seems to have. saying that, it’s been a while since I saw him play…

He’s way down the pecking order I’d have thought though…

  13. rico says:

Morning Meerkat. That’s football sadly, ruined by money and yes, it’s made a manager’s job easier if they have the financial backing to spend what the TV deals earn a club.

But, before we knock them, we have neither Arthur or Martha. He doesn’t bring youth players through and turn them into great players, nor does he spend big money to sign who we really need.

If he and the academy worked as efficiently as say Southampton’s, we’d be in a better position than we are but as it is, like many other managers, Wenger has only one option and that’s to pay for them..

  14. Meerkat says:

As long as he doesn’t rekindle his interest in Chris Smalling!
As soon as I saw he was unwanted by Napoleon, I dreaded hearing we were going for him. How he has remained in top flight football is a mystery to me.

  15. allezkev says:

I was unimpressed by the news recently that Wenger was looking at bringing in old target Chris Smalling, that was until Mr Adam and his convincing, eloquent and attractive pro-Smalling sales
pitch turned me into a massive Chris Smalling fan. ?

Off to work now in my sweat box ?

  16. Obi says:

Good Post Rico, funny enough change a few names and lines, and the story is the same for the past 4 seasons seasons.

No way I will sell Chambers. Holding and Chambers potentially can be a tandem for club and country for years to come. Chambers is a very good player and just need some minor adjustments. Chambers atm is better than Stone, imho, and Stone went for 50m…smh.

Alex Sandro (Juve) and Diego Costa (BM) are both supposedly on the move for under 30m, there are your wingers/ wingbacks.

This transfer market for AW would be harder than previous years and thats the reason I have no hope. By going after Mbappe early, other clubs are aware that we have at least 90-100m to spend, everyone also know that Alexis and Ozil may leave and to keep them we have to spend, and lastly there is no CL this year. These make the already inflated market even more inflated. And we all know that AW doesn’t want to pay fair market value so imagine now. For an example if it is true, Juve bought Cuadrado for 17.3 AW offered Juve 17.6 ……smh

Previous post….Potter Wright is much stronger than Lacazzette and Welbeck workmate is yulman like compared to Lacazette .

  17. rico says:

Thanks Obi. As said before, different players come and go, but Arsenal stay the same.

I hope all the eggs aren’t being put into the Mbappe basket, because it’s likely Monaco will hold out for the highest bidder and we could lose an alternative…

Unless it’s only us he wants to join of course, like Alexis apparently.

  18. Bwamiki Robert John says:

Too much powers for wenger and the lack of feelings for fans by the board has killed this club and to me old age is only good for wine and sweet bananas

  19. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
So much conjecture over transfers, as is the way each year.
    It’s never dull 🙂
I’m lucky, as I het to see our uninspiring lot in a few weeks time 🙂 🙂
In all seriousness, they don’t get much break, today’s PL pkayers, do they?
Unlike players in most countries who cop an Xmas break, and 15-20 uncompetitive games each season.

  20. rico says:

I think the FA are trying to sort an Winter break here in England, hence the FA Cup being played midweek – possibly…

At least you won’t get to see the diving Alexis (your view not mine) in the flesh Scott, rumour has it he’s not travelling with the squad.. 🙂

  21. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, oh he’s a “stand up” guy, no question.
Well, unless there’s a penalty to be won.

  22. Marshall says:

    Hi Rico, all.
I wouldn’t touch Lacazette with a 10ft pole. In France now he’s 3rd choice. I saw him play in the EL and Welbeck is better.

About time Monaco did us a favour. I believe le mansour being the gentleman he is, went to buy a headless chicken(Chamack) from Monaco just to help them with cash problems they had – football reasons were secondary!

  23. Marshall says:

Douglas Costa would be nice. But I doubt he’s for sale as Robben and Ribery aren’t getting younger.

Think Wenger will play Ox on the left and Bellerin on the right next season. That leaves us needing a striker and a CM in the mould of Kroos – I’d be fine with Isco

I’d let Theo, Coq, Jack, Gibbs go to free up space and wages

  24. allezkev says:

Rico, what is the balance next season in the 25 man squad between home and foreign players?
Rick is our man for that and he must be on holiday?!

  25. rico says:

    Kev, I’ve no idea, sorry…

But I’m sure we are well in the clear right now. But unless AW signs a Brit or two, he’s going to have to keep one or two of those we’d like to see gone I’m sure.

  26. rico says:

This was last summer Kev from Arsenal Times:

    1 – Gibbs (homegrown)
    2 – Bellerin (homegrown)
    3 – Jenkinson (homegrown)
    4 – OX (homegrown)
    5 – Ramsey (homegrown)
    6 – Wilshere (homegrown)
    7 – Walcott (homegrown)
    8 – Welbeck (homegrown)
    9 – Coquelin (homegrown)

    10- Cech
11- Ospina – stay or leave?
    12- Monreal
    13- Mertesacker
    14- Koscielny
    15- Gabriel
    16- Ozil
    17- Alexis
    18- Cazorla
    19- Elneny
    20- Xhaka
    21- Giroud
    22- Joel Campbell
23- Debuchy – stay or leave?
24- Sanogo or Wellington – stay or leave?
25- Gnabry (homegrown) – stay or leave?

‘Homegrown’ is based on existing definition and not the proposed “12 homegrown players” rule which ahs yet to be rectified by EPL clubs.

Under-21 players like Iwobi and Chambers are classifies as “under-21” players and are not included in 25-man squad and clubs can field unlimited Under-21 players to encourage youth development.

Looking at current squad, we have a maximum of 4 vacancies for new players should Ospina, Debuchy, Wellington and Gnabry leave.

If both Szczesny and Ospina should leave (most likely as both of them are unhappy to be on the bench), then Wenger will promote Martinez or a youth player (Macey?) or the new Dutch trialist as 2nd goalie.

Reine-Adelaide is given the number “20” and he is not homegrown, and therefore one of the 3 empty slot is taken up by him.

Meaning, either Wellington or Gnabry – not both – will have a spot in senior squad.

If Wenger should buy a new striker, then Wenger will need to sell Debuchy to make way for him.

By 13-Aug, our 2015/16 squad will most probably look like this:

    1 – Gibbs (homegrown)
    2 – Bellerin (homegrown)
    3 – Jenkinson (homegrown)
    4 – OX (homegrown)
    5 – Ramsey (homegrown)
    6 – Wilshere (homegrown)
    7 – Walcott (homegrown)
    8 – Welbeck (homegrown)
    9 – Coquelin (homegrown)

    10- Cech
11- Ospina or Martinez or Macey?
    12- Monreal
    13- Mertesacker
    14- Koscielny
    15- Gabriel
    16- Ozil
    17- Alexis
    18- Cazorla
    19- Elneny
    20- Xhaka
    21- Giroud
    22- Joel Campbell
    23- Reine-Adelaide
    24- Sanogo or new striker
    25- Gnabry (homegrown)

  27. Marshall says:

Lol Adam, that must be the reason his heart tells him to go but his bank balance tells him to stay.

Rico the new guy could play left centre in 3 man defence or as a wingback as well.

Homegrown quota doesn’t seem to inhibit man city or chavs. Only when we do things the arsenal(arsene) way we make a meal of it. There are smarter ways to deal with that. Plus Debuchy and Ospina leaving clears up space for two. Time to dismantle the british core… How do I miss the french one!

  28. rico says:

He can play pretty much anywhere defensively I think Marshall, if he’s a good as we think he is, we’ve got a cracking player…

    value for money too… 😉

  29. rico says:

Good point, City have hardly any homegrown do they? Sterling and Stones are the only two I can think of. Chelsea too have very few.. Odd..

  30. Le Coq Monster says:

Just wondering how bad Australia`s rugby team must be if they let the Sweaty Socks beat them !
    😀

  31. potter says:

Welbeck workmate is yulman like compared to Lacazette.
Not sure I understand Yulman , but to those touting Welbeck seriously ? He runs around , he works hard , he chases back but he can’t finish We have creators just missing the final touch.

  32. ScottfromOz says:

    LC,
Rugby Union has hit the wall here, for Some reason.
Even our Super 18 sides are shit.
Still, the English Rugby revival is down to an Aussie.
Same as your cricket, League etc etc
Sack Southgate, employ an Aussie, and you lot will win the World Cup, nothing surer 🙂 🙂

  33. Obi says:

Potter work rate not workmate…. Yes Welbeck can’t finish to save his life, but many times is not just about scoring but 10 players defensively working together to stop the other team. This is where Welbeck is very valuable…… Sure Lacazette gets his goals but if we think Ozil, Iwobi and Theo are passengers he’s in the same mode. Plus he would not be able to lead the line on his own in EPL…. which is among the reasons he’s a sub for France. So if we get him he would play the wing and would be exposed defensively.

I agree with you. We need finishers so we should just spend and get a straight up quality CF rather than these hybrids …. wingers/ strikers.

  34. potter says:

Actually he is behind Giroud for France because they play to Giroud’s strength. At the Arsenal it would be different as we would be more akin to his.

  35. ScottfromOz says:

    Potter, spot on.
Arsenal fans won’t see the best of Giroud unless they watch him play for France.

  36. Le Coq Monster says:

Scott………………We can compromise and have both !…………………………………………morning all, no idea what the temp` is, but it`s superbly hot !……………………………..and happy Fathers Day to me and thanks to you all for paying the up keep of all my kids all over the world !

  37. Le Coq Monster says:

Current rumour from the Asylums is Ox wants out…….he`s not happy with the time it`s taking over a new contract offer……….cant believe Arsenal are slow on that side of things as we have generously paid people to sort them out !………………………we are a cutting edge business !

  38. ScottfromOz says:

    That’d be a neat trick, LC 🙂
Word has it you’ll never see Sir Les and Dame Edna in the same room as they can’t stand each other!
Bloody contracts-why does the club stuff around so much?
How many are down to their last year??

  39. Le Coq Monster says:

Too many !………………….and all the best ones at that !

    Lol
GG may well have an Aussie Rules team down the track, but no football side.
My local side are the Central Coast Mariners.
I was walking to a mate yesterday and said a European club could do worse than buy them.
They’ve not got the best of facilities etc etc, but the junior nursery is incredible.
Any aussie side that’s played over the last few years has at least 3 or 4 ex Central Central Coast kids that left as teenagers, early 20’s to bigger Aussie clubs or overseas, and considering the population of the Coast, its punching well above their weight.
There’d be plenty of value, if a big club does snap them up.

  42. ScottfromOz says:

They’re scouting Wengers replacement, obviously 🙂
    Morning Rico.
    Excitement is building here.

  43. rico says:

Morning Scott, I doubt it somehow… lol

I guess you guys would be excited, watching them for a couple of games is better that an entire season. You might get a couple of good matches… 😉

  44. ScottfromOz says:

There’s a lot of Aussie fans who may never get the chance to see them live in North London, so this is pretty huge for them.
It’s also a nice bit of acknowledgement that there’s plenty of loyal fans here, I guess.

    LC

AFL is the premier footy in Oz. For instance Carlton v Collingwood have played each other 254 times, Arsenal has played Spuds 183 times, & Sydney F C has played West Sydney 15 times. Yet these Sydney upstarts carry on as if their Derby is the best thing going?

The A League is about the same standard as the Scottish Premier League minus Celtic & Rangers. My team is ‘probably’ Melbourne Victory which is the biggest footie club in the A League.

If you want to get an understanding of the history of footie in Australia Johnny Warren’s book Shielas Wogs & Poofters is a good read. He was the godfather of Oz footie.

  46. rico says:

    I get that Scott.

Plus, it’s a nice money earner for the club, all the tours are I guess which is why clubs do it..

What will the temperature be over there when the boys play?

  47. allezkev says:

Thanks for the info on homegrown players Rico, Chambers, Holding, AM-Niles will in time replace some of our current incumbents, but disposing of too many homegrown players right now, could result in a weaker squad as we may not be able to replace them with foreign signings.

Summer in england so about the same temperature 🙂
Nah, probably around 15-18 degrees I guess, being night games.
GG, as a Swans fan (since ’82), I can honestly say I enjoyed that yesterday hahaha

  50. ScottfromOz says:

GG, I doubt even Alexis is as fit as plenty of AFL midfielders!!!
Plenty may laugh, but some of these guys are absolute machines.

  51. rico says:

No bad then Scott, certainly cooler than it is here at night at the moment….

Alexis, being from Chile, he’ll be as ft as most footballers, if not fitter imo. He’s used to the extreme heat I’m sure…

  52. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, the conditions will be pretty good, to be honest…unless the rain comes 🙂
AFL midfielders-that’s a game that needs to be seen live to appreciate how much work these guys get through.
    Then, boxers, cyclists etc etc
Plenty of bloody fit athletes around, I guess.

  53. Le Coq Monster says:

Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters !………………………………I take it that was written in the days before political correctness, Gnarley !…………surprised it isn`t banned now being called that !…………..I`m suppressing my laugh and it`s a nervous one at that ! hahaha

  54. Le Coq Monster says:

  55. ScottfromOz says:

LC, plenty of Aussies back in the 70’s and 80’s thought anyone that played “soccer” fell off not one of those categories lol
Jonny Warren was a legend, and never let a day go by wa their trying to promote the game here.
He’d be pretty happy with how things have progressed, I reckon.
It’ll never be the dominant sport though, as there’s just too much competition here amongst the football codes.

Last reading in 2016 was he/Arsenal had £159M in the bank (the most of any club in the WORLD ) and he/Arsenal just got £140M for scratching the arse doing nothing, but it may rain one day and I`d like to see the worlds most expensive umbrella in use ! 🙂
