Good news on the transfer front? It's not all about 'you know who' tonight, it's about a win!

Good news is that QPR are interested in signing Wayne Bridge! Please let their rich owners fund that deal and remove any possibility that Arsene Wenger will sign him, we don’t need him and we don’t want him. The only downside to that story now is that Neil Warnock has been sacked so the incoming manager may think differently!

We have Miquel and Coquelin who are fitter, faster and a far better option than that old man!

Talking of old men, tonight is no doubt going to be all about one man but at least that one man is a few years younger than the two old Manc men on display yesterday and no doubt he’ll give a lot more than they did.

It will be an emotional for Thierry Henry, we all know that but we can’t make tonight’s match all about him, this is about getting through to the next round of this competition, a competition which we could win if we don’t muck it up.

Personally I think the best thing would be to start the old boy, get it over and done with and get on with the task in hand, no faffing around and no replays thank you!

Not much point in talking stats etc, what’s the point? This is just a one-off and Leeds will be chomping at the bit, especially knowing that our main goal scorer, in fact nearly our only goal scorer, is away in warmer climates.

Grayson will have done his homework, he’ll know we can’t score for toffee these days and I doubt if any of his defence are quaking in their boots at the thought of marking an ‘out of form’ Chamakh!

However, he will know all about Henry, likewise Alex Chamberlain and we should start them both in my mere humble opinion!

Wenger has confirmed he will field a strong side, why wouldn’t he? It’s the FA Cup, a competition most fans love, all the way to Wembley!

Gervinho is almost certain to miss the match as he heads out to the ACON but Chamakh remains behind so he should feature.

At the back we have Djourou missing due to suspension, Vermaelen, Jenkinson, Santos and Gibbs all out through injury, so no doubt Coquelin will continue at left back. Hopefully Kos and Merts will play central defence and Miquel will play on the right.

The down side, we should expect to see Almunia in goal unless Fabianski has recovered from the scratch on his knee!!

In midfield, who knows but it better be our strongest.

Anyway, my thought is that we may see a surprise on the bench and that is Bacary Sagna, he’s been training now for a couple of weeks and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him tonight. Maybe even a ten minute cameo at the end..

Now that would lift the spirits wouldn’t it?

Have a good day all, win tonight and it’s another home fixture against Aston Villa in the next round….

Good morning guys and chicks of the Gunners’ faith.

Good article today Rico. I would prefer the Swansea fella to come. He is good and better than Bridge. But then again we already have Miguel who can play there.

  2. BOBI says:

There’s no way that Miquel is gonna play on the right back!! I think we’ll start with him on the left and Coquelin/Yennaris on the right 🙂

  3. Rocastle says:

    Hi all,

Happy new year blah blah blah!

Be very nice to see Bacary get on the pitch tonight, also there’s a rumour going round that we’ve inquired on the availability of Eric Abidal. Sky Sports have also picked up on the story as a end of season loan move. Very Wenger.

That would be a nice little move.

  4. devilgunner says:

As you already know, IMO, AW should sell Arshavin and get a new left back and promote Santos to the wing. Taylor would be a good addition to the team, knows the English Premier League mentality and knows how to defend. This would allow Gibbs to recover completely and at the same time offer another british defender for a steely spine. The alternative would be Miguel. I do wonder why he is not given the chance more.

  5. devilgunner says:

I agree with your team Rico….except Miguel at RB and Coquelin at LB. It should be the other way round since Miguel is left footed and ~Coquelin in rightfooted.

Personally I would go like this……..

Szcesney (I dont trust the humble and goody boy Almunia, although I do like the person)

    Coquelin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Miguel.
    OX, Song, Ramsey, Benayoun
    Henry, Chamack.

Sagna I would not risk. I would give him a week extra to recover.

  6. devilgunner says:

What do you think of Jordan Rhodes of Huddersfield and the Alexandra guy Nick Powell???? Both are English born and are skillful players. Both are forwards and both are over 6 ft tall. They are younger than 21 and both have good scoring records. Dont you think AW should snap them up before anyone else does???

  7. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Morning all. Hope you all had good weekends. I’m actually, for a change, fairly optimistoc about tonight! With regards to transfer news, I’m with Rico and DG about Taylor from Swansea. Although with the rumours about looking at Abidal (for some unknown reason) my money would be on him coming if anyone.

  8. Rockyrocastle07 says:

DG – Let’s face it, if we buy either Rhodes or Powell, we HAVE to let them go back out on loan for a season or 2. We can’t keep having the same thing happen to Theo and to some extent Oxo and Ryo.

  9. colin says:

Morning to all contributors love this site because we all seem to reading off the same hymn sheet. looking forward to seeing Henry and the Ox playing it feels exciting again. can anyone suggest a good streaming site to pick up tonights game. good luck highburyans. colinc

  10. Kipmonster says:

So you propose putting the LEFT footer Miquel in at RIGHT back & leave the RIGHT footer Coquelin at LEFT back !!! …………. BRAINS !!!!

  11. devilgunner says:

RockyRocastle07 that is exactly what AC Milan are doing at the moment. They are buying a lot of young talent and loaning them back for the remainder of the year. Then the next year they assess them and if they already have a better option they loan them to someone from the topdivision sothat they get match practice and then they are ready for the season after. Maybe we should buy them and loan them to clubs like West Ham, Wolves, Swansea etc.

Ii would be happy if Taylor came.

  12. devilgunner says:

Rico has brains Kip monster. Its that they are so well hidden that you cannot see them. Anyone can make mistakes mate. Its up to others to realise they are genuine mistakes.

  13. Rockyrocastle07 says:

The right footed Coq seemed to have the game of his life at left back against Fulham, and didn’t seem to have any issues crossing with his “weaker” foot…. It’s not as stupid an idea as you think!

  14. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Exactly DG. I’m sure the likes of Bolton of Everton could take them on loan from us. They are screaming out for goals!

  15. devilgunner says:

I agree RR07. Its not Coquelin I am afraid of. Its Miguel at RB that I am a bit wary of. Either way as you said its not a stupid idea……and bdw Clichy was right footed.

  16. rico says:

    Hi again all…

Kip, understand what you are saying but Coq was very good at Lb, and wasn’t Flamoney right footed??

Hi Rocastle, Happy New Year to you too, long time no see, all good i hope?

  17. Rockyrocastle07 says:

That explains Clichy’s glaring lack of ability to cross the ball properly! Now we just need to know why Squid can’t seem to head the ball in the right direction anymore. Is his head the shape of a Toblerone segment maybe? With regards to Miqel at RB… I can honestly say I’ve only seen him play in one or 2 matches so I can’t comment eather way. As long as he has more stamina now than he did in the closing minutes of the match against Liverpool, I don’t care!

  18. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Was I dreaming it yesterday or was there actually a report that Wenger was about to bring Bartley back to “ease our full back problem”? How the hell will that ease it? Is he going to play Bartley and full back, or is he thinking of moving Kozzer to the FB slot and play Bartley alongside big bad Merts? Either way, I can only see it failing!

  19. rico says:

Don’t mention Squilli’s name DG, we may see him play tonight 😮

Just been reading that Rangers are having a worry about Bartley returning Rocky….

  20. lee says:

i spotted the obvious mistake to make sure we’re all on our toes, you minx you!!
    Yeah I read that Rocky…bizarre!
Rico, can you do the month free with ESPN blag and then cancel it or have they wised up?

  21. Rockyrocastle07 says:

See you soon DG. Not sure about the freebie anymore Lee. I do know they are doing 3 months half price (or that’s what I was offered). I loved that 3 months free, then cancel after 2 months!

  22. EastSidePaul says:

Hey DG re your 9:48 am comment, I see no reason to promote santos to LW when both Ryo and Oxo can play there, Never a fan of playing players out of position.

Sagna back is great news. Any word on TV5? Plus I have a feeling we won’t be seeing Wilshere at all this season, the same was that TV should have been back in Jan last year, Wenger does enjoy lying to the fans.

  23. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Hi ESP. I know what you are saying regarding Santos… But I actually think Santos is more a left winger than a LB. I know Goonster will disagree, but I think Santos is a poor LB. He is great going forward, but defensively inept. Although I do agree that we already have player that play there…. He would be a decent impact sub at LW if we need one. I don’t actually think he’s good enough for our first 11, so he won’t be taking anyone’s starting place. Saying that, I also don’t think Gibbs is good enough at LB. That area’s been a weak link since Clichy decided to turn crap and start falling over the ball in dangerous positions.

  24. Micko says:

    Morning all,
Thierry, an old man at 34, he’s still a spring chicken.

The Kalou rumour has re-surfaced again, oh gawd ! and ryo may be off to fulham on loan.

  25. devilgunner says:

Back again. The Kalou rumour may be just that…..a rumour. However he is better than Arshavin and Chamack at the moment so we stand to gain. And remember that AW buys rough diamonds and pollishes them to make them better. And he may be what we might need. The pity is that he buggers off to ACN every two years.

  26. devilgunner says:

Kalou is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to speak to other clubs. Therefore a 3 million fee or a loan till the end of the season might be on the cards. And his transfer fee and wages may be paid by Arshavin’s sale. A good win win situation for everyone concerned.

  27. Micko says:

He’s a wenger sort of signing devil, but no ACN this time round for kalou.

I see Downing got his first assist of the season after helping police with enquiries after hitting his ex at a nightclub…….silly boy.

  28. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Only 26? I thought he was much older! I’ve never been sure of him to be honest. He seems hit and mis. Although with AA and Chamakh, we only have miss and miss, so would be an upgrade of sorts!

  29. Rokabox says:

    morning all, happy new year,

We all know about the squids defensive ability or lack of, I also question Mertsacker aerial skill or lack of again!!, Its like the guy can’t jump at all, he looks awkward everytime he pathetically try to.
and for a guy of his height he doesn’t win many headers whether defensive or offensive. not a big fan.

  30. devilgunner says:

And this is what will happen if AW fails to sign another defender to help with our injury list………..

  31. Micko says:

Rokabox, I don’t think he’s done too badly so far this season, but for someone so big maybe he should be a little more physical and domineering at times.
A german mate of mine thinks he is terrible, we all see it differently.

  32. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Hi Rokabox. I agree with you about his (lack of) aerial prowess. He just always seems to time his jumps a fraction too late (by the time he jumps, the forward is already jumping into his back so he barely gets off the ground). It’s a bit like Crouchie, in that you expect people of their size to be unplayable in the air. But they are not at all. I can’t slag Merts off though. I love the guy! My wife hates me shouting at him when he messes up, as she says he always has a really worried, look on his face! She thinks he looks sweet! Not sure about that myself….

Although someone who’s played that many times for Germany CAN’T be that bad, surely?

  33. devilgunner says:

Jokes apart…….who would you like in attack…….??????

    The german Panzer?????

    The Ivorian Panther?????

    Or the Dutch poacher????

  34. Rokabox says:

oo ooooooo, Devil, you are Satan, lol,
Gaddafi and Binladent don’t like him, so I am ok there.

Micko if the german told you he is terrible he definately is, they know you know!

  35. devilgunner says:

Bin ladin was a Gunner. The latest dictator to fall used to support that little team a few miles up. Do not mention them in the same breadth. Castro is still alive and he is a Gunner so that puts us still ahead. The queen is a Gunner also. Who does the pope support BDW???

  36. Micko says:

Not sure devil but i seem to remember seeing a photo of arsene wenger with his arm around the pope a little while back if that helps.

  37. devilgunner says:

Seems as if it is the Ivorian Panther who will be playin for us. If everyone agrees. The pity is that we will not see him before the end of February.

  38. Rocastle says:

Hi rico, yeah been a busy little bumble bee recently. Sorry for the no show. Trying to buy a pub.

Apparently kalouless (that’s what my Chelsea mate calls him) is in London. I’ve never really rated him, but his stats make astonishing reading for a guy who gets slated alot. I’ll look them up.

  39. Rocastle says:

57 goals and 39 assists in 230 games in England. For, primarily a second half sub for most of hi Chelsea career isn’t too sad at all. I’d rather have him coming on than bentdner, chamck or park.

Saying I’d rather have Soloman Grundy than that lot. (and he’s dead!!!)

  40. devilgunner says:

Gervinho, Kalou, Ox and maybe Podolski or Suarez in the summer all point to one thing……..one of RVP or Walcott will be shipped out in the summer

  41. SD-London says:

Well i guess it is Kalou then , wenger likes surprising us he gives him a rush kind of.

Well i guess it is a smart move from Wenger although i woul have loved podolski but you know this thing s, he might get a culture and weather shock in UK and not settle well and might get another Charmark or AA situation in our hands.

We dont want that now do we , we are in a season where Blackburn is beating Man utd and Stoke can spoil anyone’s birthday .
I guess Kalou will hit the ground running and he has always admired wenger from afar he will be fulfilling his dream unlike Drogba who is an Arsenal fan but playing for Chelsea.

  42. Kipmonster says:

@ Rico ‘ Kip, understand what you are saying but Coq was very good at Lb, and wasn’t Flamoney right footed?? ‘ ………. Agreed but you wouldn’t bring in left footer to play at right back. Coquelin has played at Right Back too 7 common sense would move him there & Miquel in at left back. Why not blood a youngster who is natural left back like Angha ?

  43. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Ahh, Common Sense Kip…. Something Wenger doesn’t seem to apply on a very regular basis! I hear what you are saying though. Did Coq play right back on loan last season? As I think someone’s post on here last week stated, Coq’s obvious adaptability could be his downfall as Wenger will no doubt see him as a utility man, filling in anywhere he is needed, rather than give him a position and stick to it.

  44. rico says:

Kip – i did go on to post that i honestly didn’t realsie that Miquel was mainly left-footed 😉

Like you, I would rather see a player play in his natural position, even if he is younger, at least his positional sense would be much better – unlike when we have to suffer watching JD there…

When Coq played at right back earlier this season, can’t remeber who it was against, he had a mare of a game, that’s why’d i’d rather he stayed at Lb….

  45. rico says:

Rocky, spot on there, common sense and Arsene Wenger are two words that don’t go together – he seems to buy players and make them fit in rather than identify a weakness and buy the right player to rectify it…

  46. rico says:

Would you guys start Henry or bring him on from the bench??

I’d start him and tell Theo, ‘Watch and Learn son’ 😉

  47. Rockyrocastle07 says:

But in answer to your question, I think TH will come on in the second half. Just to make a spectacle of his introduction!

  48. rico says:

I hope he starts, and then we get on with the game rather than a big deal be made etc, but, he may just lift the side when he does come on 😉

Reckon Park may finally get a game?

  49. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Not sure… he was crap last time he played. Then again, when you’re only used VERY sparingly, it’s hard to be great I guess.

  50. rico says:

Doesn’t stop him scoring for fun for his country, how the heck can Wenger justify buying him when he doesn’t even give the guy a chance?

Can he be any worse than Chamakh….

  51. Rockyrocastle07 says:

I know. He looks pretty good for SK, and they aren’t exactly a rubbish outfit. He must be better than Chamakh. HE HAS to be!

  52. Lee says:

Maybe there’s a clause in Theo’s contract that every good cross he puts in we have to pay more to Southampton? 😉

  53. rico says:

Just been listening to Kenny Sansom talking about tonight, he is one excited fan ;looking forward to the return of TH12….

  54. Rockyrocastle07 says:

It seems all te ex-pro’s are wetting their pants over TH’s return! I thought Perry Groves was going to explode the other day when he was talking about him!

  55. rico says:

Rumours from family in Amsterdam is that Martin Jol has enquired about Jan Vertonghen, and has been told to pay between 12 – 15 million euros if he wants to make the move.

    😮

    Come on Arsene….

  56. rico says:

I think they see the bigger picture Rocky, i think they see it just as much about what he can do off the pitch as well as on it – either that or they are just desperate to see him improve our results – the ex pros are gooners and fans, they want us to get better too….

  57. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Yeah agree Rico. They all seem to want him to stay in a coaching capacity. And why not? I think the vast majority if not all on here want that don’t they?

  58. rico says:

I wouldn’t mind that Rocky, as long as he doesn’t take over from Rice, we don’t need another Wenger ‘yes man’ ….

  59. Rockyrocastle07 says:

I don’t know how Rice looks in the mirror each morning knowing he has no opinions or respect whatsoever!

  60. rico says:

Not sure he’s allowed to have any, even if he did, Wenger would hush him up – he doesn’t listen to anyone does he?

  61. Rockyrocastle07 says:

So it would seem! Probably why Adams will never come back to be assistant manager under Wenger. To very big personalities. I like to think Steve Bould would be happy to air his views to Wenger and not care if it’s liked or not

  62. rico says:

Or Keown Rocky, but Bould has been alongside Wenger too long on the training field, i reckon not much will chage until Wenger leaves…..

Keown, Bould, Adams…. Any one of them alongside a top manager would be just fine imho…

  63. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Right, I’m off – have to check the items I’m selling on Amazon and ebay, then going to try and get home for the match. Catch you on here later!

  64. Rockyrocastle07 says:

Just tried to blag 3 months free ESPN. Sky weren’t having any of it! I refuse to pay £9 a month to listen to Ray Stubbs and Macca. Looks like I’ll be watching the commentary on the Absolute Radio app on my ipod touch! Sweet deal! Speak to you later!

  65. devilgunner says:

    Hiya mates. Back from training.

Team……..Szczesny, Koscielny, Miquel, Squillaci, Coquelin, Arteta, Song, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chamakh, Arshavin. Subs: Martinez, Park, Henry, Walcott, Benayoun, Miyaichi, Yennaris.

The absence of Almunia says it all

  66. W.A.T.H says:

Squillaci in that team give my arse headache…………..

    What a joke….!

Henry not starting is a bad move from wenger……. crowd will want him on and will be signing from word go… not good for the rest of the players especially when chmuk cocks up from the 1st min….

    Oh and hello all… 😉

  67. rico says:

Hi wath, agree, TH should have started, we don’t need fuss about his return….

Woops, i thought Kos at Rb and Miquel in the centre with Coq on the left….

  68. rico says:

Flickin heck, another injury – deep pockets need to be dipped into now, for definate!!

Poor old Coq, another who finally gets his chance and the jinx hits!

  69. devilgunner says:

The frustrating thing is that there are so many options on how AFC can tear the Leeds team apart and they are not being exploited. Seems as if it is only one way traffic through the same bottleneck when we should open play up more on the wings and also calls for midfield triangular support to the attack. We are going always through the right flank while the left flank is always emtpy with Arshavin cutting inside. Even the corners are always hit and hope and usually we miss. Why do we have to put it always in the middle when we could vary it to keep them guessing. We cannot expect to play it always in the six yard box if Leeds keep on crowding us out.

  70. devilgunner says:

Sorry Rico……all those injuries are not a jinx. Something freaky or something born of ignorance or carelessness is happening for all those injuries in hammies, groins and knee/ankle strains. It has been going on for too long now to be classified as a jinx or misfortune.

  71. devilgunner says:

With so many injuries piling up I think that its high time that AW got out his chequebook and bought a couple of defenders as well. Failing to do that it surely should mean a recall out of retirement for Bould, Adams, Keown, Dixon and Winterburn. AK would surely love to see Nigel on the flank once again,

Oh I nearly forgot…..we are crap in attack. All bark and no bite.

  72. rico says:

DG, i’m with you about the injuries, something is seriously wrong, why so many players get injured is beyond me….

We are cack up front, we have nothing to threat their goal….

  73. rico says:

Well Micko, I find this game very boring, Leeds are no threat, not even a shot on goal. But, going forward we look good until it gets to Chamakh or AA who are dire….

AA could/should have two goals but his finishing is poor and Chamakh treats the ball like a hot potato.

squilli had a good effort from a corner, and for me Ramsey is maybe our best…

Henry and Theo need to come on and soon!….

  74. rico says:

Another corner…cleared but back to us on the attack, great chance for arteta, saved, not enough pace on the shot….

  75. rico says:

Rocky – he is trying but he’s a player that we can clearly see hasn’t played…. Chamakh however is woeful, be glad when his plane takes him off….

  76. Rockyrocastle07 says:

typical scenario…. ball is played to Chamakh on the wing…. Chamakh miscontrols and the ball goes out for a throw, Useless.

  77. rico says:

Great moment with AW after he scored….

Why cannot Wenger see what one or two like TH would do to our side, i don’t mean his age, but his quality…

two more and this side could win things….

  78. Micko says:

Why didn’t the numpty just start with Thierry and keep things simple, sometimes wenger is his worst own enenmy, C’mon arsenal.

  79. rico says:

Good win after a shocking performance up front…..

Takes an old man to show Chamakh and AA the way…

Oh well, at least we are through eh……

I’m offski guys and gals, nighty to you all, rest well…..

  80. devilgunner says:

Good night Rico. And on your way take Chamack and Arshavin with you and dump them in the loo. FLUSH IT TWICE OR THREE TIMES so that nothing will remain.

  81. Micko says:

Thanks for the updates guys, I’m off to the uk tomorrow for a few days but won’t be taking in a game this time around unfortunately.
Catch you next week, up the gooners.

  82. stevepalmer1 says:

    Nte ricolicious,
Unbelievable a legend has to return for us to win a game, probably worth the 70 grand a week just lose the other ten

  83. Joaquim Moreira says:

    hi!
TH could be sent off …
What concerns me, were the last 10 minutes. Like in Fulham, the team was completely worn out. With a First league team, had happened at least a draw.
I think Chamack make a head shot from the whole game. He must play in front, with one player.
AA started well. It will, but his legs do not follow what to do.
Coquelin wil be out for three weeks.
I liked Yennakis. We urgently need a man of the area without fear of kicking at goal, which shot to the head and drag the two defenses. A player like Benzema or Bent

  84. W.A.T.H says:

JM, we can all see what a class striker does to your team but we got no chance of wenger buying another quality striker he is far to blinkered…!

  85. Joaquim Moreira says:

yes, but AW must see clear. At least, because TH can only play 20 minutes in a high level, someone must defend for him and we don’t how Gervinho and Chamack will be after the CAN.

  86. W.A.T.H says:

I agree 100% JM but wenger is blinded with his own stubborness so the chances of buying what we need are unfortunately very very slim…! We can all see what we need why can’t he and also why can’t the board…!

  87. allezkev says:

Why do we all love football so much?
    And in our case Arsenal.
Well tonight was one of those nights that make you realise why it’s our passion.
What Thierry did looked so simple.
His positioning, the way he pointed to where he wanted the pass played.
The way he opened up his body, the coolness and accuracy he showed in sliding the ball home.
It was as if, he’d never been away.
We all ballistic. I’d not seen the crowd as animated as it was tonight. It certainly came home to me what a great team we used to have.
And how uninspiring this present mob are.

  88. allezkev says:

The shooting accuracy last night was worse than i’d expect to see any Sunday on Hackney Marshes.
I thought that Ramsey had a really good game even though his shooting was woefull.
Arshavin was a mixture of good, bad and awfull. Every time he did something good he followed it up with something dire. I really think that he needs a few sessions with a ‘shrink’…
I’m not at all sure what Chamakh brings to the attack. He has to be one of the least dangerous and ineffective strikers i’ve ever seen in an Arsenal shirt. On a par with Ray Hankin or John Hawley.
Thank God he’s off to the ACN.

  89. allezkev says:

Francis Coquelin had another impressive outing until the curse of the Arsenal full~back struck him down.
Sounds like 3 weeks out if it’s a bad hammy.
But Nico Yennaris did ok in his place. Looks another usefull Youth Graduate coming off the production line.
Miquel put in another good shift as a makeshift left~back.
I’d have no concerns seeing him lining up at left~back at Swansea next Sunday.

  90. allezkev says:

Was very impressed with Oxlade~Chamberlain & was a little suprised when he came off.
Very skillfull and doesn’t just run in straight lines like ‘you know who’…
I’d definately start him at Swansea, but i suspect that AW will go with AA.
Song & Arteta were steady. I just wish that Song would cut out the showboating. It’s gonna come back to bite ya Alex.
Arsenal should have won comfortably imho. 3 or 4~0.
Wenger has to address the finishing issue as it cost us points vs Wolves & Fulham and could cost us big time later in the season. Maybe in a big cup tie?

” Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona has revealed he wants to be the next president of France.

The 45-year-old is hoping to run in this year’s presidential election and is currently trying to gather the 500 signatures needed.
