First Summer Arsenal Deal Imminent?

Morning all.

Marcus Vinicius Oliveira Alencar – aka Marquinhos, a 19 year old winger currently employed by São Paulo, is reported to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal ahead of a summer move to the Premier League. In case you wondered, he’s Brazilian and a right sided player. According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, (via The Mirror) Arsenal will pay just €3.5million (£3m) for the forward and the deal could be announced within days.

Yep, 2+2= Pepe is on the move out of Arsenal. I doubt he’s the only one either. I know I’ve said it before but I can’t see any of the senior players currently out on loan, being at the club next season. If Mikel Arteta thought they had a future at Arsenal, they’d be at the club now and not overseas somewhere. I think we can assume Alex Lacazette will leave at the end of the season, Mo Elneny and Eddie Nketiah too until we hear otherwise and with the American keeper joining the club in the summer, Bernd Leno is likely to follow the same path as Emile Martinez in search of a number 1 shirt at a different club.

As far as players coming into the club goes, I guess much depends on what happens between now and next Sunday evening. Saying that, it might be that the players Arsenal are targeting this summer, aren’t the kind of players who’ll insist on the club being in the Champions League. Perhaps they might be more interested in being part of something striving to get there instead. I know it’s rare these days but there’s something special about being part of achieving success rather than simply walking into something already successful. Going to a club like Man City, Liverpool and even Chelsea must be an easy decision to make. The money is good, they’re winning things and they have excellent managers too, but they also have big squads and unless a player hits the ground running, he’ll be dropped like a red hot potato and in his place will come yet another multi million pound player. Yes, a medal or two might come along in May but if you’d sat on the bench for much of that season, would you feel like you’d really won something? I wouldn’t.

Whether Marquinhos is joining Arsenal or not, I’ve no idea but I do think he’s the kind of player Arsenal will go for. Young and relatively unknown. Players who in five years time will have a sell on fee should Real Madrid or Barcelona come calling. Or Newcastle Utd, the new rich kids in town! If Mikel Arteta does well over the next couple of seasons, they’ll probably try and sign him too because that’s what these super wealthy clubs do, buy success.

Remember when Arsene Wenger was heavily criticised for signing overseas players? Now though, the likes of Sky Sports etc believe that paying big money for foreign players is ‘showing intent and ambition’. Every club buys their own success but for many, that success is Premier League survival, for others the target is perhaps Europa or Champions League but to win the League nowadays, it’s not about bringing a group of young guys together and turning them into something good. It’s about venturing into the transfer market and spending whatever amount it takes to get the player that manager thinks he needs. One could argue that Arsenal are no different having paid £50 million for Ben White last summer but he’s the only player Arsenal, since Mikel Arteta and Edu joined forces, have spent big on.

Regardless of whether Arsenal finish 4th or 5th, Arsenal are set for a busy summer but it’s not always about how much money the club spends, it’s about getting the players Mikel Arteta wants. Whether he costs £5m or £50m, is irrelevant in my opinion.

See you in the comments.

Hi there, just a little foot note: nobody seems to mention Auston Trusty; 23yo (24 soon), 6’4″ CD who was signed in January.

  2. Potter says:

When Trusty signed he was loaned back to the Rapids and the club stated that he would be loaned out in Europe for a year before coming to Arsenal
Incidentally Balogun is back from Middlesboro , don’t know if he can play though

  3. rico says:

Oh yes, the championship is done for another year so a number of our lower league loanees will be back. I can’t think they’d be able to play in the last two matches though. Great shame as we could do with a central defender.. lol

  4. Cicero says:

He remains a registered player with Middlesbrough until the end of the season, so is not eligible to play for Arsenal until the transfer window opens and he is re-registered.

What a great name, Marcus Vinicius Oliviera Alencar, he sounds like he should be in Gladiator, the Commander of the Armies of the North fighting in Germania…

Morning Rico, it would be good to see us get some business done nice and early, another Martinelli hopefully with Saka moving inside where he can cause more mayhem and yes it does seem as if it’s Bon voyage Nicolas Pepe after three years of consistent inconsistencies.

We missed the calming influence of Ben White at the Toilet and as it increasingly seems that William Saliba sees his future elsewhere a fourth centre back should be on the ‘to do’ list. Four centre backs who we can rotate without any drop in performance seems the plan, ditto four full backs so Hickey asap, etc…

That’s interesting regarding Balogun, Cicero, does that mean that Middlesborough continue to pay his wages until June 30th..?

  7. potter says:

According to Brazillian reports Marquinhos has signed for 5 years but will be loaned to a club in Spain for the first year .
Sounds like another Carlos Vela deal .

  8. pbarany says:

Yes, Kev, Middlesborough will continue to pay his wages until June.
There are only a few special circumstances when a player can play in 2 teams in the same half season, and “their league is over” is not among them.

……………..when do you want your vengeance? in this life or the next? lol

I always have a big smile when we sign relative unknowns. That is to everyone bar me since I have access to the coaches’ database due to my badges. but tbh, even though I can say I have such access I had never researched for him until we got mentioned as signing him.

I too think we will sign Hickey. The articles I keep reading on Italian sites all point to that. And it seems he does want to come since he knows he will get regular game time because Tierney will not play all the games. Unless Arteta isnt thinking of keeping Tavarez and pushing Tierney as a CB. Now that would be interesting.

Interestingly enough I feel that on Monday we will have this backline (unless Gabriel plays)….Cedric, Tomiyasu, White, Tavares.

I hope its not Xhaka as a CB or LB.

You can be sure that I wasn’t entertained last Thursday. Fingers crossed I will be entertained by Burnley tomorrow and on Monday by Nketiah.

I am still trying to figure out the image of you dressed in gladiatorial attire. Will you use the passenger car door as a shield? I wonder 🤔🤔😅😅😅😅

Bags packed, checked in, all the hoops jumped through, boarding passes downloaded and printed, daughter in law booked for 4.15 am pick up for lift to the airport. Amalfi Coast here we come. First holiday since the start of the pandemic.

  12. Cicero says:

Thanks Rico, Minori Potter it’s where my wife’s great grandfather was born, her great grandmother came from nearby Ravello. They emigrated to Britain in the late 1800s. Originally they made and sold ice cream from a wheel barrow, before opening a pie and mash shop in Clerkenwell.

  13. devilgunner says:

Enjoy Cicero. Italy is a very beautiful country, especially the mountainous regions. My family on my father’s side hail from the Alps, my great grandfather was born there. My dad still has his cousins living in the Alps and in Torino.

    Do you understand Italian?

  14. devilgunner says:

It seems that Arsenal have reached agreement with Bologna for Aaron Hickey. He has scored 6 this season….quite a good amount of goals in the defensive minded Serie A. Alancar MArquinhos is a done deal it seems as well.

  15. devilgunner says:

Minori and Ravello are quite near each other Cicero. And also not far from Naples. Quite a bit of history as well. Enjoy Cicero. Especially the quiet life of such small towns.

  16. Cicero says:

Parlo fluentemente Italiano DG. With a little help from my friend Amazon Fire translator. 😉

  17. devilgunner says:

Allora lei lo capisce bene la lingua della patria. Mi fa piacere Cicero. Spero che lei avra’ un soggiorno piacevole pieno di momenti rilassanti che ti donano il sorriso sul vostro viso.

  18. Joaquim Moreira says:

    Hi there!
I understand Italian when written, speak a little and enjoy the language.
    Ciao

  19. Joaquim Moreira says:

    Translating to Portuguese:
Então, entende bem a língua do país. Estou feliz Cícero. Espero que você tenha uma estadia agradável cheia de momentos relaxantes que lhe coloquem um sorriso na face.

  20. allezkev says:

Where in Clerkenwell was the pie n mash shop Cicero?

I think Manze’s were originally from Italy.

  21. Aussie Geoff says:

    Morning Rico and all
The players we have penciled in for signing may not be known to us but at least Arsenal are doing some business early and not waiting to the last minute. Still hope we can find a player that is a try leader.

    Cicero have a great holiday
