Morning all.
Last night’s Europa League Final might have been between two clubs who have been little short of dire in the Premier League but for Totts, they’ve got their hands on a trophy after a 17 year wait. I didn’t watch the game, why on earth would I? Apparently, it wasn’t the best game European football has produced although I doubt anyone on the white side of north London cares. Well done to them I say.
A good friend of mine and her husband are Totts fans so this morning I did the decent thing and passed on my congratulations – the reply I got was hilarious: “yes we’re pleased but we still have a s**t manager and the team isn’t much better either”.
We all want to see Arsenal win trophies, of course we do but weirdly, I’m not at all envious of last nights winners. I’d rather see Arsenal win the League Cup than a European Cup which let’s be fair, hardly had the best of clubs in it this season because of the new Champions League format.
When you consider the two clubs battling for a place in the Champions League next season are currently sat in the two places above the relegation zone, something isn’t quite as it should be.
Anyway, with all that out of the way, let’s look forward to next season. After all, what’s the point in dwelling on might have been. Moaning won’t turn us into league champions or Champions League winners either but a strong summer transfer window might in the season or seasons to come.
A deeper and stronger squad will help Mikel Arteta that’s for sure because think about it, if you and I hoped not to see Sterling, Zinchenko, Neto etc on the pitch then why would we expect Arteta to pick them. That’s the key for next season in my opinion, having better players throughout the squad.
Unlike Totts, we do have a very good manager but of course, there’s always room for improvement and he’ll know that better than anyone. I don’t think we’re back to the days of Champions League qualification will do, not at all because I think Arteta would rather go elsewhere than just drift along securing top four. One can hear the passion to win in his voice, his anger when the officials treat us differently to other clubs, he wants our club to be successful and that means, winning trophies.
Of course we all have an opinion on the football, rotation etc etc but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Typing away on a keyboard is easy too yet I know it’s just frustration. Thankfully, on here, our moans and groans are polite. Lol
We still have one fixture left to play on Sunday against Southampton and Man City still need to overturn an 8 goal difference to knock us off second place but I can’t see that happening. Whilst a second place finish is nothing to celebrate, I’d rather Arsenal finish second and reach a Champions League semi-final than finish seventeenth with a Mickey Mouse Trophy in the cabinet.
Catch up in the comments.
Morning Rico and all,
Tottenham are not happy winning a trophy as no one knows were the trophy cabinet key is.
Morning Rico, gotta say young missy that’s a mighty fine post you’ve put up there. 😁
Of course the usual a-holes in the media will be on our case, poking us with sticks through the bars of the Internet, and if you bite, well that’s on you pardner.
If you’ve not won a trophy for 17 years then of course you’ll celebrate and the Press will take the piss, it’s what they do! But for me, who always looks for positives, we now have Ange looking secure in his position and for us that’s gotta be great. Tottenham in the Champions League should be fun, imagine what’ll happen to them when they play proper teams? On top of that we have Levy, who is bound to spend his CL bonanza on a load of dross.
Man Utd will spiral into even more of a depression and attracting players we might have been interested in is not going to happen with no CL to offer them. Less dough to re-build means sticking with many of their present squad and although they’ll have less games next season, that in itself won’t be enough to transform them into a top side again.
Well that’s my take…
Good morning Rico, as far as I’m concerned you’ve said it all about last night’s fiasco.
I don’t see any sense in repeatedly picking the bones of the almost past season. Onwards and upwards is the way to go
Don’t forget there is one more huge game to come, Saturday kick-off 5pm in Lisbon when Arsenal Women take on Barcelona Women in the final of the Womens Champions League.
Here’s hoping…….
Morning Geoff, Kev, Cicero, all.
Thanks Kev.
I’m saving the big final for Saturday post.. 😜
The media can say what they want, let them. If they took a step back and looked at the Europa competition, they’d realise just how poor it is. £100m for the winner is a joke.. but that’s the game these days.
I see Amorim has already said he’s willing to walk if Utd don’t want him.. lol
Saturday’s final, the final game against Southampton and then let’s see what we do.
I’m staying optimistic that we’ll bring in quality..
Word on the street, Arsenal are working on a deal to sign Real Madrid and Brazil forward 24 year old Rodrygo.
Morning. It was a dire game. All Tottenham could do after being 1.0 up, which was a poor goal, was stay in their own area defending. Couldn’t manage a second goal. Man U. They just didn’t turn up!
Tottenham with this team and watching their very average performance, will not survive Champs League. Would be the same if Man U had won.
I think Tottenham may have done us favour re Gyokeres. Fingers crossed.
Yes it’s crazy that a team that has performed shockingly throughout the season makes it to the CL.
Yeah Cicero, we usually do well out of Real Madrid cast-offs, but I can’t see us spending €100m on Rodrygo, I reckon £50/£60m because his wages will be tasty.
Brazilians do well at Arsenal, I reckon we must have a good name with the folks back in São Paulo and surrounding areas.
Which street Cicero? 😜
I can’t believe you watched it Laura.. I bet you wished you hadn’t. Lol
I saw the last half hour , effectively Spurs went ten at the back and put a shield in front of the keeper . It would have been justice had united scored and forced extra time . Probably it would have gone to penalties so inept were both of them .
They have their trophy , we won’t hear the last of it .
We have earned enough this year with 2nd and semi to buy a couple of decent signings , they will have enough for another Maddison and Chelsea if they win the conference might get enough for a month’s wages.
All it has shown is that Eufa’s greed in increasing the teams in the Champion’s league has severely weakened the standard of the secondary cups .
Next week Chelsea play Real Betis they would seem to be evenly matched if you go by their league placings , 6th in their individual leagues.
Which street ? Probably comes from Marca’s journos in a dodgy bar on the Plaza del Sagrada Corazon. Picked up by our journos in an equally dodgy bar near Canary Wharf.
It’s an old cliche from the days when Fleet Street was the home to most national newspapers, hence news on the street.
I thought it was a great game last night, paid for DAZN and a very nervous watch.
I’m talking the National League big playoffs semi-final of my home town team against Forest Green Rovers and their Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil paymaster rich owner.
Southend equalised in last minute of extra time then missed first penalty. But having nearly gone out of business only 8 months ago, Lady Luck was on our side as FGR hit the bar and ballooned one over! Such justice, Southend asked for few thousand tickets (ave home gate 8000) but FGR gave bare minimum 740 and left rest of stand unused, horrible club. After coming from 3-1 down to win QF playoff 4-3, Southend refuses to give in!
Having seen a dozen home games this season (only now get to Arsenal when season ticket holder son can’t go or gets a spare), it’s ironic that Southend play out dangerously from the back, pass sideways and backwards and have forwards that can’t score, sound familiar? Manager has sworn at supporters who keep yelling Shoot😀. Let him off though as Kevin Mayer personally helped players for months when previous owner stopped paying wages. Good job we have Europe’s highest scoring right fullback/wingback with 17 goals. So off to Wembley decider against Oldham to see if can get back in league and be able to have a reserve/youth team again, I didn’t realise 3/4 million subsidy to run, stops once in the National League.
I’ll stop boring you all with a game you probably didn’t know was on, I didn’t even bother looking at Spurs result until all over, so had much more entertainment!
That’s funny re Chelsea Potter. Very…
Hope you have a ticket for Wembley Andrew.
Hey Andrew, I didn’t know that about the owner of Forest Green Rovers, well I hope their owner never smiles again, another millionaire living off of the ‘green taxes’ we all pay.
Fingers crossed for Southend from my end of the A127.
Rico, it could be first time a Nat League playoff final has near 50,000 attendance, although it’s just been seen that Jubillee and Metropolitan lines are not running to Wembley Park on Sunday 1st June. Could be chaos at Wembley Central where Oldham fans will arrive.
Thanks Kev, when you think Southend were 5 minutes from final deadline of winding up, it’s pretty amazing.
Kev, owner Dale Vince had FGR in ‘Just Stop Oil’ training shirts for an FA cup game before the FA stepped in and banned it.
