Double deal getting closer. Arsenal line up Newcastle defender, just in case?

Morning all.

The EFL Cup, or the League Cup as it remains for me has moved into the next stage, the one where all the big boys get involved. Arsenal have been drawn away to Nottingham Forest which won’t be an easy trip. That all takes place during the week commencing the 19th September.

In years gone by, the League Cup has been our chance to see a few youngsters perform, players who are on the cusp of making the next step up into the first team and no doubt we’ll see a few again this time around but options in defence are quite limited.

Calum Chambers is heading out on loan which I think is a great, certainly for him. If he can get to a club which has a manager/coach who knows how to improve defenders then that’ll only be good for him because he hardly improved since he’s been at Arsenal. Similar could be said of other players who we have on the books which were signed young but never really improved.

The academy has little, or no defenders, not out and out good central defenders and even Bielik, who looks like he could have a great future with us, is a defensive midfielder turned centre-back, all because whoever is responsible for finding top young defenders, just isn’t doing so and not only will the youth teams suffer, but so will the first team.

Just what Arsenal’s scouts get up to I don’t know, but clearly they aren’t doing their job very well and not just at youth level. According to the official website, Steve Morrow is head of scouting, well perhaps he, like so many at the club, need a rocket up their jacksies because all this shunting players around the pitch just the plug the gaps just isn’t working and it’s hardly fair on the players whose career could very well suffer because of it. Arsenal don’t need ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ players, they need players who are great at what they do and be allowed to excel in that position because that’s when they are at their best.

But time is running out for Arsene Wenger to sign two or three of those kind of players this summer as there’s now just six days left before the transfer window shuts.

Gossip:

There’s many a story doing the rounds about Deportivo de la Coruña forward Lucas Perez this morning which appear to have been started by Spanish newspaper Marca. They suggest Arsenal are very close to announcing his move from Spain to north London. The two clubs have agreed a deal says the newspaper and all that’s left is for the player to agree to move. Perez is hardly the dynamic top notch striker we all hoped for is he but let’s give the guy a chance if he does become an Arsenal player as it’s not his fault.

Mind you, with Everton interested, whose to say he wouldn’t prefer to link up with Ronald Koeman…..

Looks like the Mustafi deal could be back on too as reports on Sky Sports today suggest Valencia officials met with the players agent yesterday and he’s subsequently been told he is free to leave. If true, I guess he’s handed in a transfer request. £26 million would see the deal done.

However, The Star report that Newcastle’s Chancel Mbemba could be our defender signing….

All a bit late in the day isn’t it and all sounds a bit desperate to me……

Champions League draw takes place tonight, that’s something to look forward to…..

Scott it’s the fucking frustration that winds me up, we’re so close imo! Three players, CB,RW and a striker ( and a new manager! 😉 )

I also kidded myself into believing that Wenger would really push the boat out on the transfer front too…. there’s still time, yes I know but why are we dragging our feet?

  2. rico says:

Me too, I really believed he’d go big this summer, sort the squad out and really challenge for the league…

However, can’t teach old dogs and all that…..

  3. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies

Wow….two posts today. I am impressed. You are like London buses……wait a long time and then two arrive.

Are we signing anyone today??? or tomorrow???

  4. Danish Gooner says:

Chambers and campbell on loan what will happen when an almighty injury crisis strikes and it will, because this is Arsenal ????

  5. scottfromoz says:

Lee, I can’t offer an answer, and I won’t try to find excuses-there are none at all.
I’m sick of it as well, and it frustrates me as much as anyone, believe me.
Wenger is an enigma….a riddle that none of us can work out.
I really would love to get on the piss with him and hope the truth comes out-it’d be an interesting conversation!!

  6. Lee says:

Well there’s generations of supporters in my family as they say it’s in the blood!

Scott you touched on a massive point the other day, Arsenal football club if they continue to act like they are, will not attract young supporters! Sad but true..

  7. tsgh says:

Kelsey from previous page- I agree Aw shows favouritism to certain players but with big contracts, I am certain there are mechanism in place to not cost the club money unnecessarily…

Before players are signed or a contract is extended, underwriters will like to see that they are medically fit..
As I said my views are coming from a non- football point of view so it may make no sense… but common sense tells me that for a contract to be cancelled, 3 parties have to come to a favourable agreement…
I bet the lawyers and agents will put clauses into contracts to protect their respective clients..

As an example, if a player went on holiday played footie with his mates and got injured or did some sort of water sport and got injured long term then it will be up to the club to invoke the relevant clauses; on the other hand if the player managed to walk and come to pre-season training and then claimed a sprint in training caused that injury then it will be up to the medics to prove otherwise and if negligent enough then the club can either fine or sack the said player…

My only gripe is that those injury prone players hold up squad players but I am 100% certain insurance covers most of the salaries of injured players.

Saying all that I know Aw has played players close to the red zone into the ground on occasions.

I use to analyse stats for one of the major databases in my spare time. I came across info and mentioned on here that Ramsey was in the orange zone.. 2 games later Ramsey was off for months… someone from the company probably read this site and got me admonished for mentioning sensitive data on a public forum… how the found out it was me… still puzzles me but hey…

  8. rico says:

No idea Devil.. Hope we do though, Friday is signing day isn’t it?

Dg, same as always I suspect, shift players around to fill the gaps. That’s what he does…

  9. tsgh says:

Scott- I still hold the opinion that AW should have walked after the FA cup win or at least the 2nd one…

If he had we would either now be calling for the good old days under AW or saying thank heavens he is gone…

Nothing last forever, he will be gone soon enough…; the positive thing about AW is that he is no Harry or Jose who leaves most clubs broke. If the money is there as majority believe then someone will come in and spent it

  10. scottfromoz says:

Ginge, I’m on record as saying he should’ve left after the 2014 cup win.
    Perfect timing.
Our first trophy since The Emirates………
He should never have been offered, nor should he have accepted, another contract.

  11. scottfromoz says:

Ginge, I also agree with you on other managers…..most don’t care a bit about how they leave the club, as long as when they leave, they have another job lined up.
That, as much as anything else, is why I’ll always show the man his due respect.
Regardless of what else he does, the club will be one hell of a strong unit when he leaves.

  12. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Acc2bbc Perez deal is close.

try to employ Mourinho or Guardiola Scott. They will not care a shit about how they leave the club.

Just ask Internazionale…..they still cannot get out of the financial vortex Mourinho got them in when he left. Sure he gave them the Serie A title and also the CL….but the club has already changed owner three times since financially they cannot cope.

  13. scottfromoz says:

Devil, you won’t hear me say positive things about them.
Yes, they can manage, but can they build a club?
No, not in my opinion but then again, most clubs don’t want that anyway.
Whatever people think of Arsene, he’s an original lol

  14. Hell Raising Devil says:

Yes Scott….whatever people thing and however many times he drives us crazy with his judgements or decisions……or lack of both……he is one hell of an act to follow.

Yes he is scrooge…..yes he drives us mad…..but he will leave the clubs with strong foundations for the next manager imo.

The only problem is that the club is owned by a dickhead and not the supporters….like Bayern, Barca or RM. As you say Scott…..the majority of the blame has to be shouldered by SK

  15. rico says:

The first ten year Wenger is a hard act to follow, the last ten, no way…..

Replacing him should be quite easy I’d have thought…

  16. Dublingunner says:

Afternoon, crashed here too, so were down to plan E in our striker pursuit, again the cheaper option prevails, Perez has a release clause of 20m euro, so Wenger knows he can,t be mugged about with this deal, I agree with what you said Rico, give im a chance before we judge, but is he step up from Giroud, no, Everton all but had the deal done, till we hijacked it, If true, I would say he is most probably everton class, Again the tight one, still has never spent more than 20 million on what is the the most important position on the pitch, Desperation buy imo,
What a sorry mess these windows have been…

  17. Wavy says:

I wonder if the Depot Lukas guy can play centre half too, like Mel Charles used to do for us, when required?!
    Or.
Is this more hot air or is it possibly a rumoured ‘truth’ to placate the fans??

I think the old worn out silver haired one has tired of the TW and is now employing the Goebells tactic of dispersing untrue and fabricated propaganda! Very clever, or so he thinks, in his palsied brain!

Arsenal.com……….? He truth is out there!

  18. kelsey says:

More than a rumour abou Perez but will Everton spoil the deal, not Koelman but our ex share holder Moshiri who recently sold his stake at Arsenal to Usmanov.

The Mustafi deal is definitely not dead, and heavy negotiations are going on with our last bus stop Real Madrid for Rodriguez..

  19. tsgh says:

Dev whilst we complain about AW,the bin dippers have extended klopps contract to 2022…there is no guarantee he will win Jack all either.

  20. Dublingunner says:

Could well be Rico, but looked at his stats last night , apart from a good last season, they don,t excite at all, have we fallen so much that were competing with everton for players?

  21. rico says:

But Wavy, how could Palace turn down a chance of getting Feeeeooooo 😉

Kelsey, I thought James was staying put?

I read them too Dg, hardly exciting eh….

  22. Hell Raising Devil says:

I hopped a little bit on other blogs.

People are very underwhelmed about the Perez signing.

Well…..many complain that AW never has a plan B

And then when plan A does not work out and he goes for plan B or C they call it panic buying.

Amazing stuff. cant believe what I read.

Yes….he may have wanted Griezmann, then Higuaín and LAcazette…….when they did not work (if he was in for them in the 1st place) he went to the next on the list…..Perez.

And people have the audacity to call it panic buying.

  23. tsgh says:

Another manager I lost faith in was klopp.he insteaded Bvb kept hold of lew instead of taking 30m plus that the club could have done with.
A year later he complains about lack of funds and resigns the following year…
Aw sells rvp and takes money for club coffers and fans slate him for selling an injury prone striker

  24. Hell Raising Devil says:

Perez is different to Ollie Bradster. He is pacy and can play on both wings. But he can act as a target man as well. And he can be direct as well.

Very similar to Pippo Inzaghi regarding style and body stature.

  25. tsgh says:

Dev you are becoming too liberal… Perez and Inzaghi in same sentence… next you will be saying Ollie is like baggio.Lol

  26. Joseph says:

Why does it take us ages to complete a deal, pep or mourninho target a player and get the deal done, just stop penny punching and get some fucking transfer done.

  27. Dublingunner says:

The thing is when buying Defenders, midfielders, wingers, we look for different attributes, passing ability, creativity, pace, the willingness to track back, defensive cover etc, but when you buy a striker, it,s all about goal scoring ability, to which I don,t think Perez is a step up at all on Welbeck, Giroud.
Time has run out for Wenger, clubs know he,s desperate and have upped their evaluation, absolutely no one to blame but Wenger, for the way this window has went.

“If we can find the right Quality”, we will do it, so it has taken him 3 months to decide Perez is Arsenal Quality, bollox., then tries to tell us we are led by the media, as if we don’t have the capacity to think, see, and evaluate things for ourselves,
it,s a panic/best cheaper option buy, no doubt, brought on by his own incompetence

  28. Joseph says:

Cant believe what i am reading appartenly winker is of the perez deal in two instalement, how can this arsehole be serious, get out of our club you are a joke.

  29. Wavy says:

But can he play in central defence? You know how Wenger likes to play his peripheral players out of position! If he can’t he’ll be no use to us!

James? Why? He is a not over large MF not really a cf at all.

Mustafi? I thought that deal was dead in the water. Or, has he been resurrected again, like the second coming?

I’ll wager we’re not in for any of these players, it is all a blind to keep the fans off Wenger’s back for the next few days, until the TW shuts for ever! At least for him as I don’t think he’ll see another window!

  30. bradster says:

I still think we will try last minute for Bony if no one comes in for him. Maybe he will surprise us and sign Sturridge, he seems unhappy on the wing.

  31. Joaquim Moreira says:

    We haven’t enought players!
If Chambers in way on loan, if we need a new defender before is leaving, now we need two!
Our squad: 3 gks; Debuchy (loan or sell) , Jenkinson (loan ?) Mets (injury), Gabriel (njury), kos (50% fit),gibbs (50% fit or loan), Chambers (loan?), Monreal, Holby, Bellerin – 3 defenders + 2 – 50%; Midfields – Wilshere (10% fit), Ramsey (50% fit), Ozil (70% fit), Xhaxa, Cazorla (70% fit), OX (80% fit), Coquelin, Elheny, J R.adelaide (loan? ) – 3 midfields, when Coquelin is not suspend; Forwards – Giroud, TW (80%), Alexis, Wellbeck (injury), Gnaby (loan?), Sanogo (our “espoir”!). Iwoby (injury ?), Akpon (loan ?) – 2 fit and others more or less…
Aren’t you concern with this? In September, The league was lost; we play two games a week with the League, the champions Leaguee and League cup (a strong opponent)
    HH crashed on mee!

  32. rico says:

    Thanks kelsey..

Devil, perhaps plan A, if it was Lacazette, failed because our offer wasn’t enough? That’s possibly the reason it failed.

I’m underwhelmed by Perez if he signs, totally underwhelmed and so late in the transfer window suggests he is nothing other than a panic buy…

  33. Micko says:

Blind faith rico, Arsene has it in spades, most managers will tell ya the league is won over 9 months, we’re the exception to the rule, Arsene must think he can will it in 8, there’s no other explanation.

  34. tsgh says:

So AW told negotiators to offer a 2 installment offer? Dear oh dear…iunt appears AW is perceived as Kim Jong-un

  35. kelsey says:

I actually think he is on a mission for us to have a bad season.he is doing the complete opposite to what everyone is saying and one wonders why.

Joaquim,I made that point yesterday we have a very much depleted squad, loaning players out left right and centre.Maybe we will get a big surprise and sign at least three more quality players (thinks) no that’d too logical.

  36. Micko says:

The last 48 hours is gonna be fun rico, I always enjoy watching the tumble weed blowing across the Emirates when Sky cuts across to the reporter lol.

  37. Le Coq Monster says:

    Afternoon all !.

Perez better than nothing !……………….that means you lot would be better than nothing as well !……..sign you up !…….. not me though, my missus always tells me I`m nothing without her, so if you want me Arsene, me and the missus come as a package !. 🙂

I cant see anywhere official wher it says Chambers is going out on loan and bu official I mean ……….Ornstein !…………..cant see that happening, too many defenders on life support !.

    Talking of Ornstein…………………………………………

    https://twitter.com/bbcsport_david/status/768746249034104832

  38. Le Coq Monster says:

Seems like most sites are saying that Perez is the Spanish Vardy !……………………….that`s all we need ……Steptoe and Juan !.

  39. Le Coq Monster says:

Group A: PSG, Arsenal, Basel, Ludogorets
Group B: Benfica, Napoli, D Kiev
Group C: Barcelona, Man City, B Moenchengladbach
Group D: B Munich, Atletico, PSV, Rostov
Group E: CSKA, Leverkusen, Tottenham, Monaco
    Group F: R Madrid, B Dortmund, Sporting, L Warsaw
Group G: Leicester, Porto, Brugge, FC Copenhagen
Group H: Juventus, Sevilla, Lyon, D Zagreb

  40. Le Coq Monster says:

Ludogorets ???……………………..sounds like an affliction Arsene suffers from !

How the fcuk did the spuds get such an easy group having been in pot 3 ?……………………….cnuts !

  41. Le Coq Monster says:

Basiktas and Celtic in group B and C respectively !. ……………………………something wrong with my copy and paste !.

  42. Le Coq Monster says:

Speaking to a friend at work today, she told me her Grandad played for Arsenal and naturally I got all excited !…………………she was a bit vacant on how many games he played or even if he made the first team, so as soon as I got home I looked him up and he just scraped into the Arsenal player archives ! 😀

    http://www.arsenal.com/history/profiles/311/les-henley

  43. Micko says:

    Basel are no mugs either……

Looks like Citeh are splashing 17 million out on a goalie, we’d haggle to pay that for a striker !

  44. Obi says:

IMHO, before I bid 18-20m for Perez, I will rather bid for Andre Silva at Porto,…. younger, bigger, quicker and more deadly and ambitious… Some of the shots that he has the audacity to try is nothing short of pure confidence. We are not winning anything this year anyway so why not just get ready for next hoping we can convince Ozil to stay.

BTW, since you mentioned the EFL Cup or the League Cup (whatever you call it), I watched the game between Morecambe and Bournemouth, the Morecambe players were very impressive especially with their crosses and passes into the box. Here we have EPL players on crazy salaries that cannot cross the ball but these guys playing in division two were hitting their targets like 90% of the time with dangerous balls, unbelievable.

  45. kelsey says:

I actually hate this formula. One could come forth in the PL some 30 points behind the winners and still qualify.(I think it happened with us).

I know it’s extra revenue but a knockout competition from the off still being two legged would be swifter and in my opinion fairer.

We play far too much football over here.

  46. Wath says:

PSG away….. That was entertaining the last time we were there…! same result would do me but can’t see that happening either.

As for two installments on Perez, it’s normal for teams to pay off a fee over the course of the players first contract, paying it off sooner normally means they accept less as the cash amount is bigger up front so we not really doing anything tight for a change there.

  47. kelsey says:

Wath, you are right but there is no set rule.More often than not it’s spread over 4 or even 5 years.

Maybe like practically all the Spanish clubs they need money now, that’s why I still think we may well get Mustafi.

  48. rico says:

But why Wath, if the club want Perez, why not just pay? It’s not like we are likely to need the money for someone else… Lol

  49. Wath says:

Rico, in fairness paying in 2 installments is way better than spread out over the length of the contract so it’s a decent offer and better than the norm…!

  50. Le Coq Monster says:

Just back from footie and two new Ornstein tweets !……………I get the feeling these are definately happening, it`s just a shame that when someone as reliable as Ornstein tweets it`s not about the top notch quality us fans would like ,but someone who I have to say……I`ve never heard of !….All the players we`ve been rumoured with since last season ended…………….Mahrez, Aubanggang, Draxler, Lacazette, Higuin, Reus, Morata, Dybala, Icardi, Batyshuai, Lukaku etc etc etc and we get what sounds like a jouneyman !………………..mind you, I`d never heard of Santi until we got him !………………..better hit the ground running as the knives are well and trully sharpened !.

    https://twitter.com/bbcsport_david/status/768877942529204224

  51. tsgh says:

Lucas Perez’s stats for Last three seasons are:
    Goals scored 24
    average Mins/goal 199
    Conversion (excl pens) 19%
    Assists 12
    Mins/chance created 48

  52. tsgh says:

Hopefully we get our first 3 points of the season against Watford since Kevin Friend will officiate the v Watford. Our record with him in charge is Won 8 Drawn 2 Lost 1.

  53. tsgh says:

Hypothetically, If AW had signed Xhaka, Mustafi and Perez on June 1st and didn’t add anyone else sections of fans will still be outraged for not addressing squad.

  54. Joaquim Moreira says:

tsgh, if had signed those players he can buy Sissoko now
Our Schedule in Champions is good if our performance at home will be good.

  55. scottfromoz says:

    Who is Elneny?
Wasn’t long ago we asked that. 🙂
That’s not a shot at you guys, but all Gooners.
I’ve never heard of Perez, doesn’t make him a bad player, though.
    I’ve never seen Mustafi play.
Let’s hope we bring in one more to really strengthen an already decent squad.
PS-that’s pending these two signings coming to fruition.

  56. kelsey says:

Well, hopefully these two signings will go some way to appease the fans but Perez is a level below what is required.Only last month Wenger and his scouts talked over the signing of Perez and dismissed him as not being good enough,so it smacks of desperation and also buying in what now amounts to the basement department.Hopefully his initial thoughts were wrong and Perez will add something much needed to the attack.I have confidence in the Mustafi signing and he will have to learn fast as he will be needed more or less straight away.

    Morning 🙂

  57. frednerk says:

    Morning All
    This Perez geezer
looks a bit like Mahriz in play.
    Looking through his montarge
of clips,75% of him playing on
right and cutting in on the left peg.
Prehaps Arsene is looking to play him
down the middle with his back to goal
    other than that….
    It’s goodbye Theooooooooooo

  58. kelsey says:

It was john Cross who said it Rico.It maybe true or not.let’s judge him on the field. Still one more defender to come with Chambers going out on loan.

  59. frednerk says:

Harry an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.
A few days later, the doctor saw Harry walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.
A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Harry and said
“You’re really doing great, aren’t you?”
    Harry replied,
“Just doing what you said, Doc Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.”
The doctor said, “I didn’t say that. I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur; be careful.

  60. Marshall says:

Good Morning you lot! Positive news on the transfer front. Well until the .com confirms….

We have a favourable group stage which we can finish on top and avoid a round of 16 exit, but with arsenal and arsene… we might even loose to Ludo…yeah those guys and scrapping a win on the last match to qualify 2nd.

  61. kelsey says:

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also facing the media – plenty of managers obviously keen to get these ordeals out the way early.

He starts by saying he has the “same squad” available for Saturday’s trip to Watford.

    What about these signings though?

“We are working on deals… will we sign anyone before the end of the window? I’m 99% confident.”

Will Arsenal fans be worries about that 1% possibility?

While Arsene Wenger is talking, more transfer news from the Gunners from our reporter David Ornstein…

Arsenal have reached an agreement with Valencia for Shkodran Mustafi and he will travel to England today to begin a medical and finalise personal terms on a five-year contract.

Lucas Perez will also have his medical today.

I still think we will sign James Rodriguez. Always said Wenger was a master of deception not contraception as others have implied 😉

  62. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good morningllovelies and hunkies.

Who was PV04? Who was MP17? Who was NA09?

    Who was AW?

    Who is Perez?

We wait to discover if Perez will join the legends.

  63. Marshall says:

Rico be optimistic. We can draw the PSg games and hammer the other teams for a healthy goal difference – not saying Basel will be pushovers but we have the quality to.

  64. Marshall says:

James? Assuming he will come to play in the hole, that position is abit overcrowded. Ozil owns it and I bet the blondie will be rotated there.

  65. Tsgh says:

    Rico…from my ‘sauces’ lol.

Erayabakan apparently said so…apparently if Jose gets rid of Mata then he will move to yanited.
Wath’s best friend Mendes is involved and wants him at Juve if yanited does not work out…

  66. bradster says:

By that idea we could ask who was Stepanos, Cygan, Gervinho, Scillachi, Myiachi, Inamoto, etc etc.

There were many a no name flop to a world star gem and add to that, it was a very very long time ago that Wenger found those gems.

  67. Tsgh says:

Real Madrid wants to sell this summer but Juve and yanited have done their mega deals already and so RM will have to accept a mega loan fee plus us paying James salary or Jose and Doyen will have to come up with the 80m real want…
I doubt Aw will pay the asking price.

  68. rico says:

🙂 Marshall. We are talking about Arsenal in the Champions League..

Morning Adam. Nice thought to get him isn’t it…

    Spot on Brad… 9.53

  69. kelsey says:

Don’t quote me but I hear from within our club that Rodriguez has fallen out with Zidanne big time and wants to leave. Ozil won’t go back to RM but James can play on the wing so maybe no one is going or Gnabry is being loaned out after Campbell or even Walcott may be sold to part fund the deal.

  70. allezkev says:

    Morning All

    Morning Rico

If and when we finally conclude the deals for Mustafi and Perez, will that mean that we’ve signed those two players that we’re always short of Rico…

    # Just Saying ?

  71. Tsgh says:

For those who slate AW for not doing deals with any agent take a look on Spiegel.de or type in football leaks documents and maybe one may appreciate why deals such as Mata did not go ahead.
Copies of footballers actually contracts can also be found…you may then realise why AW does not just cancel contracts of injury prone players just like that to…

  72. allezkev says:

I wonder what kind of wages that James Rodriguz would be on, £150k pw, maybe more…
Taking him for a year on loan would make sense, Arsenal would probably have a clause in the deal to make it permanent at a set price next summer, possibly in January, just in case he turns out to be another Beast. And who could forget him…

  73. Tsgh says:

Kev it’s only 120m Euro….only.Lol of which he gets an additional 2m performance related bonus a year…
So you are not far off…the stumbling block is as ever Jose and Mendez.

  74. allezkev says:

Rico, ha ha, you’re a hard woman to please… ?

Morning Ginge, Willock to Brentford then, makes a lot of sense…
Retain The Jeff, Bielik, Maitland-Niles and Zelalem…
