Ditch the plasters and go under the knife.. She’s clearing her throat….

Morning all.

We’ve seen it all before haven’t we and so many times. Last night’s capitulation seems worse though because we faced a side who under Arsene Wenger’s management, we’d never lost to, but they royally thumped us. To be fair, Palace didn’t even have to fight too much for the victory because we handed them it on a plate. We were awful, soft, pathetic, embarrassing, out of ideas, disorganised, defensively naive and weak but the really sad thing is, that performance didn’t surprise me. I suspect it didn’t you either..

We can pick out players who were weak, off their game or who in our opinion shouldn’t even be at the club but in all honesty, from the moment they walk out onto the pitch these days, I’m far from convinced they know what the plan is. Walcott said after the game that the team knew Palace wanted it more from the off, well that says it all.

Where is their fight, their passion, their desire to win every tackle, to win football matches, to work hard for the team and us fans? They haven’t got an ounce of any of those traits running through their bones. Gutless, the darn lot of them but these individuals were’t always like this were they? No, certainly not all of them but they mirror the place the clubs sits in right now under the Frenchman.

Nothing will change until change takes place. Arsene Wenger simply has to go in the summer.

He can talk all he likes about how he has a week to build the confidence in the squad but one week won’t work, not when he’s spent the last 6/7 years sucking the confidence out of any players who play under him. He can’t rebuild confidence as the players he has, have no confidence in him. They can’t have because if they did, they’d believe in his footballing plan and play it out on the pitch. Wenger is out of ideas and the team reflects that.

I think the weaknesses of Arsenal have been defensive, because they leave Mustafi and Gabriel really exposed. Monreal and Bellerin play like wingers, they come inside with the centre forward, and the defenders are just left on their own, so if you can get at them you can get into the box and make chances.

I think we had the opportunities to score goals, and I think that tonight tactically was the players being aware of what had to happen to beat Arsenal. The first thing was to defend correctly as an XI to keep them playing sideways and backwards. We won a lot of possession off them and won a lot of chances off them.

I think they’ve had a poor spell of results for the first time in years and years, and every player, top players or not, feels the frailties of that. The only way you take advantage, though, is by the team closing them down and frustrating them, not letting them do what they want to do.

Those are the words of Big Sam who clearly did his homework before playing us last night, not that he’d need to do much homework as everyone and anyone knows how Wenger sends his team out every week. I wonder if Wenger had watched the last few games of Palace? Judging by last nights pathetic showing, I’d say no.

When the away fans turn on the players and manager and the Crystal Palace fans start singing ‘Arsene Wenger we want you to stay,’ it’s clear that Arsenal FC have a huge problem.

The club need to tell us what’s going on as this has become a shambles. Tell us Wenger is leaving in the summer and give us some hope that the club we all love isn’t dying a slow death. It’s painful to watch what must be the last days of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal career unfold. His interviews are tiresome, his words are meaningless as we’ve heard them so many times before. To think there’s even a chance of him staying beyond this summer is laughable as not one other club would handle this situation the way Arsenal are. Arsene is a broken man, Arsenal are a broken club which in desperate need of fixing.

Now is the right time to ditch the plasters which have been papering over the cracks in recent years and undergo major surgery. Not in another year or twos time because by then, it might very well be too late.

Carragher unfortunately is right. We have gone AWOL – the second half display shows everything in finite detail. No pressing, poor attempts at defending, no shots on target, no real desire, incredibly poor communication and ZERO leadership on and off the field. Thank God we are not in a relegation scrap, because if we were, we would need to be sorting travelling arrangements to Norwich etc.

Surely there is one board member with balls – one who will stand up and say enough is enough. We are falling apart, have not really re-invested properly for 4 or 5 years, have stale, out of date tactics and a broken squad. If AW really does love Arsenal as much as he says, then he would walk away today. Right now I’d even take Eddie Howe – no, stuff that, I’d even take Eddie the Eagle!

Morning rico, all. Good post, we really are a shambles at the moment. Its got so bad I don’t even get upset at losing now. In fact I even wished a fourth so Wenger would be in more of a mess. Dreadful how it got here, and no excuse.

If Monreal and Bellerin are to play to their strengths and provide crosses (long time since we had a winger capable of doing that) surely we should have three at the back so as to shore up the two CBs? But that would take one of AWs favourites out of the team I guess?

Wath posted this on the old post:

Morning you lot, great article from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon – which I thought is rather poignant to most….!

    I am done with football.

My relationship with the game is dead.

My relationship with Arsenal is strained.

My relationship with Arsene Wenger is over.

I have tried to remain loyal. Tried to work through the problems. Tried look on the bright side, find that silver lining. I have naively thoughts things would improve. Clung on to great memories of the past. Even some good memories of the recent past. But like many a relationship, it is time to call it a day.

I am drained, emotionally and physically. There are only so many beatings I can take. Only so many times I can get knocked down and get back up again. I need to walk away. Get a fresh start. Learn to love again.

Football is something I fell out of a love with a long time ago. The way fans are treated by all clubs, no matter if you are Chelsea at the top of the league or Leyton Orient at the bottom is nothing short of a disgrace.

Clubs simply do not care about regular match day fans. And the authorities, the Premier League, the FA, the Football League, care even less than the clubs.

The commercialisation of the game, the globalisation of it, has ruined it for match day fans. The clubs concern is no longer the well being of the thousands that go through the gates every season, and have done for years, but their extended reach. For a decade now they have cared about income, cared about attracting more foreign fans, than cared about their most loyal fans who would stay with the club no matter the situation.

Fans who go week in week out are trodden on by all clubs as they chase the dollar, yen or riyal. Clubs would rather 60,000 different people turn up to each game, all spending £100 a ticket, going into the club shop, spending many more hundreds, than 45,000 season ticket holders, who go in and out, have a grumble, don’t spend much at the ground, but are happy(ish) to pay their £1,000+.

Ticket prices are not just an Arsenal thing, but a football things. Leyton Orient, the leagues lowers club, currently charge £20 – £39. How is that right? And they are a club that are currently being ruined.

The FA have a fit and proper person test. I would love to know what it actually is as the likes of Leyton Orient have been badly let down. As the clubs chase foreign investment, it seems both them and the football league do not care how shady this money is, or even if it exists. Coventry, Leeds, Leyton Orient, Portsmouth, and more. The list of clubs with dodgy owners gets longer every year.

Add in the TV companies, changing times not matter if fans can get too / from games all for prime time viewing. Add rail companies and airlines hiking up prices as soon as a game is announced. It all leads to a feeling of not being loved. Everyone is out to make their buck. Their slice of the pie and we as fans are the mugs. We are the ones no one cares about. Yet we are the ones who travel up and down the country week in, week out.

I have not enjoyed football for some time, but what dragged me back was my love for Arsenal. And now that is dwindling.

I moved house early in the year and it has meant that I have been unable to go to as many games in 2017 as I would have liked. It is damning that I have not actually missed football.

2 weekends ago, when Arsenal were playing Manchester City, I did not even watch the game on TV. I was busy in my garden, in the sunshine, painting a fence. I only realised the game was in with about 10 minutes to go.

The fact is, when I have not been at football, I have not missed it.

A few years ago, I made an attempt to go to every Premier League game. I ended up one short. I planed holidays around football. I sacked off family gatherings for Arsenal. My life was about football.

The year before that, I was up at 2am in Thailand watching games. I would not dream of missing a game, whether it be at the ground or on TV. I would get itchy if I was close to missing a game. And if I did miss one, I would spend the entire time refreshing my phone, annoyed that I had missed a game.

But things have now changed. I no longer care. Arsenal do not care about me. Why should I care about Arsenal? I am merely a number. A body through the door. I am not even a bum on the seat, as if I do not take my seat, the club has already got my money.

Arsenal Football Club is rotten from the top down. We have owners and a board who seem happy sitting round their oak table smoking cigars unable to actually make a decision. We have management, coaches, players, all of whom see the club as an employee. A way to become millionaires. They do not care.

We have fans who I can not relate too. And it is not just the selfie holding foreign fans who I can not stand. It is the majority of our fan base. What ever happened to going to a game, having a pint, enjoying time with your mates.

Every is now vying for their bit of attention. Waving to the camera. Trying to be front and centre. Everyone wants their 5 minutes of fame, even if it embarrasses themselves, their family, their children, their club, their fellow Arsenal fans in doing so. Everyone wants to be a celebrity.

No club has fans like Arsenal Football Club. More interested self publicity. Making a quick buck off the club whilst slagging it off. It is all just embarrassing. This isn’t Arsenal.

I always thought I was a fan who stuck with the side through thick and thin. Would stay to the end, no matter what the result. The first time I walked out on a game was the 3-0 defeat to Everton in 2014. I went as the 3rd went on. I have now walked out of the last 3 away games.

At Liverpool it was a couple of minutes before the end. I could not bare listen to the Scousers sing You’ll Never Walk Alone. WBA I went at 3-1. I was surprised when I got back to the pub that a couple of my mates were already in there.

Last night I went at 2-0. I just did not want to be there anymore. I wanted to go home. It was a Monday night. I had a 90 minute train journey to look forward too. I just wanted out of their, I did not like the toxic atmosphere. The toxic performance.

I do feel like a fraud. I should be there through thick and thin. But if the players and management do not care for Arsenal, why should I care for them?

Then we have Arsene Wenger himself.

Those that know me will know I have wanted him going for a few years now. Whilst I will not shout abuse, wish death on him, or undermine his legendary status at the club, I have quietly wanted him gone whilst keeping an unbiased view point with no agenda. I have attempted to be level headed.

The man has now lost it. His selfishness shows no bounds. He sits smugly stating he “knows the future” when it comes to his contract, yet will not tell anyone. He thinks he can do no wrong. He is turning into a Scouser, it is never his fault.

His arrogance, his selfishness, his stubbornness, it is all becoming sickening. It is getting to a point where he is ruining his own legacy.

Whilst remove Wenger from his position as manager will not change the club overnight, he is one of many rotten apples, it would be a start. He should have resigned last night.

He claims to have dignity, class, but if he did he would fall on his own sword. Admit things are not good enough, and leave now. Sadly, he has £8million reasons not to leave. Why would you throw away £16million+ over the next two years if there is no pressure from above to do so?

Wenger has always presented himself as a gentleman of the game. He is now an old man who screams at his long suffering wife to get him a cup of tea, despite him being right next to the kettle.

It is never nice seeing a grand parent slowly losing their marbles, becoming a horrible person, as you have to love them no matter what. As their mind go’s downhill land they become more abusive, you still have to love them. But you will just start visiting them less. Stay for shorter periods. You turn up out of duty rather than love. That is what it feels like with Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.

There are only 2 games left this season I have interest in. Spurs away and the FA Cup semi final. I doubt I will go to any other game this season.

The sad thing is in a month it will be season ticket renewal time. I will renew my home season ticket. I will renew my away season ticker. And I will go again. I will return home, to a one sided relationship where I know I am going to get abused. But there is still love in the heart. And it is that love that will keep me going through the bad times.

I am, like many others like me, a mug.

  4. TT says:

    Morning rico.

i have said it before here on this blog and got ridiculed for it but I think this last 2 months have really proven my point. The biggest problem at Arsenal is not the manager, board or owners but the fickle fans. What other shower of sheep would start singing one arsene wenger like happened on Sunday.

Only when the protest will be come deafening will the old fossil leave. No sponsor will want to be associated with a club that has the fans in full revolt. It’s bad for business.

If we get full points against boro be prepared to hear the one arsene wenger chants again and the silent majority being exactly that, silent.

If he signs on again, and I’m about 60/40 that he will, we will get exactly what we deserve.

I have been to one of the protest marches even though I dont live in the UK, happened to be there on business. We need those marches to move from few hundreds to thousands. Surly if we could muster a quarter of a million for the cup parade we must have enough fans in London that care enough to spend an hour on a protest walk?

Rant over. Hopefully he will just go. one can always dream.

  5. Alex says:

    Good morning Rico

I rather talk about the club rather than players or le prof.

If i take your last paragraph….

1st question will be where to start the sugery .

Le Prof has appointed every personell that you can think of in that club not by his football ability but for their loyalty towards him.

Now which department or personell first under knife ?

I think it will not be long that your one knife is not enough .You need hundreds of knives to do the job.

There is rot every where. The board cannot do much without him.Or they have to spend big big money to get rid of the rot.

I am sure Kronke is not interested to spend money on rebuilding that mess.He rather keep the status quo.

Le Prof loves to work uncheckered and that is that for some time.At least the two coming years i expect to be under Le prof.

  6. Felix says:

Wenger is so scared of change to the extent that he prefers taking all the insult from the arsenal fans than moving to other clubs to prove us wrong by winning trophies. He would not last too seasons with a top team and an ambitious board. He seems to be using arsenal as a nursing home.

  7. potter says:

Andrew , don’t bring common sense into this.

E thought that Monreal stuck to his job last night as Zaha was physical fast and quite prepared to cheat albeit not as much as Townsend. It’s midfield that we are lacking . We have no water carrier as Cantona said about Deschamps . We haven’t really had one since Parlour and that is down to the man that does the buying.

  8. rico says:

Welcome Felix, I like that about Arsenal being his nursing home…

    Morning Alex, TT…

I still can’t believe that there’s a section of fans who support him…

  9. frednerk says:

Potter..I know exactly what you say.
But how are we goner change that
its unimaginable for us to get rid of both.
    Stanley is a billionaire.

  10. Kel says:

Nice post Rico. I’m surprised ya bothered today.

Losing last night didn’t even hurt I didn’t even get annoyed it was just sort off expected tbh.

    From 1st Jan.. we’ve took 17 pts from a possible 36.

Spurs have took 32 from 36.

Powershift has happened and all under Lord wengers watch.

  11. Alex says:

    Another thought

What does Bellerin offer when he bombs forward ?

    Nothing but expose the defence.

One could say or take him.aside and show him his last meaningfull contribution on video and reminding him his first duty is to defend.
No ! As there is nothing happening he is carrying on and on.
By the way i do not see anything to make me believe that this chap is a super runner. The Spud reject yesterday sprinted ahead of him for the peno.

    Xaka

Forget the 35M mantra and tell me if this chap is better than Denilson .

Only few accurate long passes surely we pay 35 million.

What does he bring to the defence ?
Zero .His confidence is shattered and we are not playing an offensive team and still he is not offering anything infront the defence.

The only player can keep the ball in his feet Ox not playing at all.

    It does not add up.

Maybe Kronke has agreed with his fellow Manure country man to leave for them the champion league spot for some money and ordered Le prof to ease on that top 4 trophy……lol…..hmmm who knows ???

  12. Kel says:

Be careful what you wish for they say…. so what did that entail?

    Was it no champions league?

Was it falling outta the top 4?

    Was it finishing 6th -8th?

    Was it being completely shit.

    Was it being humiliated 10-2
Or was it 8-2 Or 6-0 Or 5-1…

Well all those boxes have been now been ticked under Lord Wenger..

Fuck we really do have the most incompetent owner and board in the premier league..

  13. Ed says:

How many teams in the Premier League do not have a dominating, tough centre back? One. Koscielny may be good alongside such a centre back as he is weak and gets outmuscled against a strong forward. To go alongside Koscielny Wenger has bought Mustafi and Gabriel who are nowhere near good enough. To sit in front of them he has bought Elneny and Xhaka. Can anyone explain to me how these 4 players have ended up at Arsenal? When you have gutless players like Ozil and Bellerin in the side as well, is it any wonder what is happening. Arsenal used to have 11 leaders now there are none. Koscielny is the captain FFS. Just watch the way he defended against West Brom and tell me how he is captain? As soon as there was a corner and the big boys came up from the back he vanished as always. There is so much wrong with the playing staff it’s tough to know where to start. How many of these players would get in Chelsea’s side? How many would they want? One maybe.

  14. rico says:

Welcome Ed. Is it the players who aren’t good enough, or the way they are coached? I’d have thought Mustafi, who’s a German international is better than what we are seeing, same with Gabriel who arrived at the club looking like a no nonsense defender…

Leave any defence and keeper exposed and they’ll struggle…

  15. Ed says:

Wenger’s issues are well publicised. It would be impossible to list his faults in one comment. So, I’ll just say that is desire to play his brand of football without compromising is at best arrogant and at worst incredibly stupid. Football moves very quickly and where he was once a leader he is now not even a follower. The tactics (if there are any) are so basic that any opposing coach worth his salt can put together a plan to beat Arsenal if Arsenal aren’t at their peak (which seems most of the time now). Get stuck into Ozil and Arsenal are already down to 10 men – I don’t care how ‘talented’ he is the man is an utter disgrace and has no respect for his teammates or fans. Get 10 men behind the ball and nullify Arsenal’s passing which with players like Walcott in the side is nowhere near as good as it was. Then hit them on the break knowing that they will not be organised and will have committed too many players forward. Rough up the physically weak defenders (of whom Koscielny is the biggest culprit) and an average side can beat Arsenal as 7 points in 8 games demonstrates.

What will they be doing on the training ground today? Will they be working on shape? Will they be working on set pieces? Will they be working on one on ones and how to get tight? Of course not. They will be playing small sided games knocking the ball about and all looking top quality. Then they’ll play against some nasty tough team and not fancy it. Bellerin – brainless and gutless; Monreal – nowhere near good enough. Centre backs – nowhere near strong enough. Central midfield – not one good enough to be either the tough player or quality player. Ozil – disgrace. Sanchez – given up. Walcott – 10 years of underachieving and now captain. I’m bored now

  16. potter says:

It’s interesting how the bile has changed direction to the players , suddenly they are all shit. However that obviously is not true, badly directed , yes . Badly organised also yes, Individual players playing for themselves as opposed to each other. Cliques within the team with players choosing not to play the easy obvious ball but turning their backs on teamates and looking for a much harder pass to a friend or someone they consider to be on a higher plain. Ozil looks for Sanchez and vice versa they ignore Theo and that tells me a lot . Bellerin is getting stick today and last night apparently but he does the job that he is told to. He is not told to sit back and defend he is used as a winger and Wenger relies on his pace to get back when we get caught out.accuracy at hitting the first man in the defence with his crosses is remarkable , I have said it before , look up before you pass, even if your pass goes to no-one it’s better than going straight their defenders. Elneny can dictate the play if he is used correctly but too frequently the lack of movement in front of him because Ozil , Sanchez want the ball to feet and Walcott doesn’t appear to want the ball at all unless he can run on to it and shoot. That’s just a brief summary of our problems going forward . Going backward and there is a whole new lot. We are not the biggest team in the world but allowing Benteke and Sakho to pick out Walcott and Bellerin at set pieces is just plain ridiculous. When our fullbacks go forward why do our midfielders at least one of them not stay back to give cover instead of all trying to join in the sideways passing fest . When their keeper is clearing a high punt why do they not drop in front of the centre backs to stop the forwards from getting a free run at the ball , and runners that go unnoticed into our box . Oh for a Vieira a Parlour a Petit a Gilberto . Players that could read the game and knew where to be.
My belief that our real problems on the pitch lie in centre midfield until we learn how to win that battle the rest of the team get isolated and eventually over run.
Incidentally would like to see Martinez keep his place until the end of the season.

  17. rico says:

I too don’t think the players are rubbish, under a different manager/coach they’d soon prove that. especially if that coach understands how to do tactics.

    Same here re Martinez Potter.

  18. frednerk says:

Arsene coaches with the ball most sessions.

George Graham coached without the ball most sessions.

Thats the answer..Its not the players.

    Most has been said.

  19. Meerkat says:

Times have changed and the game and other managers have moved on.
When Arsene first arrived, he was a breath of fresh air in the league, new ideas on play, diet, training etc. Exciting. However, that cycle has passed, other teams caught up and overtook with new, younger managers.
We have been left behind searching for that magic combination again, that would only come with plenty of money available for the top players, a new talented manager, and a whole new backroom team and talent scouts.
Is Stan the type of owner to provide all that? Sadly, no. Will it happen? Sadly ,no, not whilst he is the main man.
He has no interest in football, just the capital worth of the club if and when he decides to sell it.

We can blame it all on Wenger, but it should never have been allowed to come to this, and that is down to the board and the owner not being ambitious for the club. Happy with 4th place instead of wanting to win the league.

    I can’t see it changing.

Carragher said it last night. This IS Arsenal!

  20. George says:

    Ed
    APRIL 11, 2017 AT 12:14PM

    well said

Of last nights horror show, only Mlnreal and Elneny turned up.

And just to add, did anyone else see the Xhaka and Gabriel on pitch argument??

Just to re-iterate what most have already observed, we lost every 2nd ball and most challenges.

Martinez showed he at least cares…the rest should be ashamed

  21. Kel says:

Maybe Arsenal’s most bitter rival’s Tottenham will provide the necessary pressure the last derby at the lane 4 or 5 -0 to spurs which atm is very likely should do the job on completing wengers removal from the club.

    Sad but true…..

  22. Le Coq Monster says:

    Evening all and thanks Rico.

I think Middlesborough are there for the taking………………6-0 and we can get back on track for top 4 !…………………………I`ve been driving all day in the sun, I could be hallucinating……….make that a cheese burger with large fries and a strawberry milkshake !

  23. Meerkat says:

Ozil, Sanchez, Ramsay, Ox, Gibbs and Mertesacker are all in the final year of their contracts at the end of the season.

How the hell does a club like Arsenal let so many first team players get in the final 12 months of their contracts like that?

That’s a lot of key players that could now force transfers for bargain prices or simply wait until 6 months into the season then negotiate themselves huge free transfers and I just don’t see what Arsenal can offer them to stay.

No CL football, fans that are turning on them, a manager who seems to have no support from the fans and who has completely run out of ideas.

The only way they can hold onto them is to break the bank and hope they’re more interested in money than success.

The downside of that is they’ll be paying way over the odds for players who aren’t performing which means they have less money to spend on overhauling a squad that badly needs rejuvenating.

Wenger has too much power at Arsenal and it is not good for the club for a manager to be able to decide his own future like Arsene can completely regardless of results

You can guarantee that if this was United, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool or City a manager performing like that would be gone.

  24. micko says:

Potter 12.29, “Oh for a Vieira, a Parlour, a Petit, a Gilberto, players that could read the game and knew where to be”

Spot on, all of the above would have left a calling card unlike our shower today, none of them have the stomach for a fight, we’re getting rolled over week in week out, it’s hard to keep up, what is it now 5 defeats in 8 league games, like Arsene my head is in the clouds, everything is cushty.

  25. allezkev says:

    Just a thought before I turn in…

I wonder if you guys have noticed the Arsenal spin machine ramping it up for season ticket renewal time, but with more gusto than I’ve seen in some 15 years…

Feck me, there has been a continuous stream of transfer stories doing the rounds, so much so that they’ve even swamped the Ozil and Alexis saga.
The latest pile of shite claims that Wenger is gonna spend £200 million this summer on new signings!!!

    That’s right £200 million… ?

    What horse shit…

But there will be those, even now, who’ll believe all that crap…

And it’s only early April, wait until this time next month, feck me we’ll probably be linked to Suarez, Aguerro (,that one has been in the Manc Evening News already lol), Greizmann, can’t have a summer of rumours and not be linked to him, Bender, the old ones are the best ones, several Portuguese players only JM has heard of, we never buy from Portugal anyway, Benzema, another standard rumour there, always good for a laugh, throw in a few Germans and Italians to sex it up…

And then on September 1st Arsene will announce that Yaya Sanogo is like a new signing.
    You wait? It will happen…

    Don’t have nightmares… ?

  26. BT62 Gooner says:

Yeah, sales are up on this time last year…..So all you Platinum members get your £6000 in quick before you miss out..lol

Our washing machine has less spin than this lot…

  27. Le Coq Monster says:

    Morning all.
See that Kev`………….What a coincidence that we …….sorry…..Arsene is going to spend £200M in the summer just as the season ticket renewals arrive ! I`m so thick I believe it ! hahaha

Also, but this is true…………………..A single Arsenal share was bought on 27th March for £17,750 !………..at that price the club is worth £1,073 Bn and Kroenke`s worth would be £700M making him a £300M profit !…………..sell you bastard !

  28. rico says:

    Morning Adam.

Lc, if he wants to make a quick buck overnight, you’d think he would sell because those shares value could well drop if he gives Wenger another two years…

  29. Le Coq Monster says:

Agree Rico and think what he could do to his new LA Rams stadium…………..or another ranch…………or another Vineyard……………….or a Rocket to Uranus , where there`s the only known cure for baldness…with the money !……………………lets face it he has never put a penny into the club !
