Ditch Coquelin for Busquets says Merse! Hoist by his own petard!

Morning all..

It was only a friendly right?
Meant nothing really did it?
Just another pre-season match to gain fitness, right?
The result didn’t really matter either did it?
Neither did the trophy at the end as it was only the Charity Shield right?

Rubbish, every single answer to the questions above is was a big fat yes for me, just as it mattered that Arsene Wenger beat Jose Mourinho and more importantly, Arsenal beat Chelsea!

And don’t even begin to think that the match meant little to the opposition either because apart from Costa who was injured, Mourinho played his best side.

On a glorious sunny day, how fitting it was that the big shield was presented to our boys by Janet Rocastle who was a guest of honour together with her son Ryan……. The late ‘Rocky’ would have been proud…

The game itself was pretty good I thought, the usual diving antics by Hazard were on show, as was the cynical fouling by a few of the Chelsea players, Ramires, Matic and Ivanovic especially and imo, Santi Cazorla was quite lucky not to have left the pitch with a serious injury. Studs down the back of his leg was one, a ‘stamp’ on his ankle another but Anthony Taylor was blind to both as usual. Funny how his sight deemed most tackles on Hazard to be fouls though….

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the hero of the day with the only goal of the game and he’ll struggle to score a better one this season imo. A ball out to him on the right from Walcott, a cut inside Azpilicueta and then a tasty shot with his left foot which left Courtois helpless. It really was a superb finish and a goal which in the end proved enough.

We had further chances too, in fact Theo had a good header saved before we scored and after that, Cazorla, Gibbs and Giroud all could, no, should have buried their chances to make the scoreline more convincing. Walcott made a right hash of decision making at one stage, instead of running at the defence with the ball at his feet, (and to be honest he’d out run Cahill or Terry any day of the week) showing just why he should be considered as a central striker, he passed out right and a shocking pass it was too.

What his presence did do though was make Terry and Cahill think twice about pushing too far up the pitch.

The opposition had a few good chances too, Hazard fired over when it looked easier to score and Ramires fired a simple looking header over the bar too.

Rapper Will.I.Am was Chelsea’s best player on show I thought, but our midfield gave him far too much time and space for him to weave some magic, fortunately Remy was having a day to forget. I know the offside rules have changed but….

That’s not me knocking Coquelin as I thought he was one of many players who played really well, but it’s proof that in the ‘big games’ we need another guy in there alongside the Frenchman to sure up the midfield. Matic and Ramires V Coquelin and who?

As the game went on, Mourinho made changes in hope to win the game, Wenger did the same to try and prevent them, and it worked.

I thought the back five were outstanding, especially the middle three, Coquelin too had a very good game but very soon, his gesticulating will get him into trouble. He has to learn that only players who play for England are permitted to react after a referee blows his whistle, well, unless his name is Jack Wilshere. The booking he picked up yesterday was harsh, very harsh but we all know what a game player Hazard is and it’s a shame the referee’s haven’t spotted it yet, but they will…

As the game closed out, Arteta and Falcao (I think it was) had a little spat which was handbags really and we successfully parked the bus to hold on for a win.

And Petr Cech lifted his first trophy for his new club, having made one or two fine saves along the way. A £10 million bargain I’d say!

Mourinho tried to steal the show with his mind games after we collected the trophy but to be honest, I thought he made himself look a bit of a tit. He had no intention of shaking Arsene Wenger’s hand any more than Arsene Wenger did his and that’s the way it is.

Would you shake the hand of a man who constantly uses the press to ridicule you? No, neither would I!

Seriously, didn’t Mourinho say that he’d have found a way to beat a team/manager having not done so for as many times as we have failed to beat his lot? Well Arsene Wenger and the players did just that as they defended resolutely when needed. Yet still that Portuguese little git has something to say despite him being one who loves deploying very defensive tictacs all so often! The term ‘hoist by ones on petard’ springs to mind!

He really is vile isn’t he…..

I’m not trying to suggest this Arsenal side has totally turned things around and suddenly we have a squad bigger and better than all others and we’ve cracked it, as I still think we are at least a midfielder short and I know a striker is on other fans list of ‘transfers which have to be done’ too so fingers crossed we’ll all get our wish.

Yesterday was a fantastic day for all Arsenal fans and a great start to this 2015/16 campaign.

And I for one loved it, just as I bet Arsene Wenger did and he deserves a chunk of credit for yesterday. Where did he buy his bus from I wonder……..

Gossip:

Chuba Akpom is set for a Hull medical today ahead of a season long loan.

Arsene Wenger totally denied that he is interested in signing Karim Benzema insisting the stories are made up in the Spanish or English press. Yeah right Arsene!

The Busquets rumours continue and I have my fingers crossed this is more than just a rumour! So does Paul Merson but what a twerp for suggesting Wenger should ditch Coquelin. We need both imo.

That’s your lot for Monday, have a great day guys…..

    Super read.

    A tremendous win for us psychologically…;

Did Merson really say that Rico?Didn’t watch it on tv and so…

A win against the Hammers who appear to be rudderless will be a great great start…

  2. allezkev says:

Just read that piece in the Irish Times, Adam, and a very good read it was mate.

As most on here agree, everything he does is calculated, and all about him.

I mean, think about it Gooners?
We’ve just beaten the Champions and we’re talking and thinking about the Portugese Prick.
    Irony or what?

    He’d love that, the tosser!

Just over 4 weeks before the window closes.
Time enough for Arsene to do some business…

Off to read post, but it ‘looks’ great… 🙂

  3. Dex says:

For a supposed defensive midfielder/enforcer Biscuits is a soft arse diving twit. We definitely do not need him.

But as usual the moronic Merse is blinded by the big name.

  4. scottfromoz says:

Sensational post, and a sensational result.
Shaking a mans hand should be done out of respect, not obligation, and since Joe Say has constantly disrespected Wenger, I’m glad he gave the grub a cold shoulder.
Paul Merson, is he as dumb as his comment makes him appear?

  5. Wavy says:

    Morning all.
Hope we’re up for the hammers game and not so cocky as to think we’ve only got to turn up to win!
Last season’s win against the oilers was a tremendous start to our season but then look what happened, we were at best ordinary and by the time we woke up the chavs were so far away we couldn’t even see them!
Being human we have the ability to reflect on our past errors and attempt to correct them, this is the time to hit the road running and keep on at the same level until it’s all over next May, or earlier if at all possible!
Like James Brown, ‘I feel good’ !

  6. allezkev says:

Rico, that’s a great point about Walcott and how his inclusion prevented Chelsea from squeezing up…

Arsene seems to have finally found the antidote to Mourinhos spoiling tactics, at last…

  7. eduardo says:

    was Wenger’s quote

    “There’s nothing special there.”

a calculated dig at Mourinho, if so it was masterful

  8. allezkev says:

Wavy, Alexis will give them a boost, he won’t allow any complacency to creep in…

    Cech won’t allow it either…

But I get where you’re coming from, we’ve won three cups, preseason, but that was just the phoney war…

When are the draws for the CL and Lge Cup?

  9. tsgh says:

    Agreed Wavy…

Aw’s teams’ have always been complacent after tremendous wins. Even our esteemed 2003 team went on the blink a few times. The pires- Redknapp gate incident comes to mind.

Bilic will settle the Hammers, but before that we need to put 4 past them and start with a very solid goal difference as well…

  10. scottfromoz says:

We need to kick off the season well.
We have a decent first month or two on paper and need to to make the most of it, so it was imperative we start in form and firing.

  11. Joe says:

So many questions Rico can I get back to you with the answers later a lot later. 🙂
Good post by the way, it’s starting to look like Arsenal have the defending part of the game soughted even Jose is jealous.

  12. rico says:

Morning again all, thanks re the post comments.

Welcome The Real Goomer & Dex..

The last time I saw Busquets he looked good, it was a while ago… But the suggestion of ditching Coquelin is ridiculous imo, another one like him would make our midfield very very strong in the ‘big games’ and certainly in the CL…

Kev, clubs are scared of his pace so as long as his sits on the last man when we are coming out of defence, he’ll keep any defence back. Especially an ageing old Terry! And as Potter said yesterday, once Giroud came on, they pushed up more…

Just why if AW wants a striker, why not Lacazette instead of Benzema….

  13. bondex says:

Morning all, whatever maureenho thinks about our tactics yesterday doesn’t bother one bit….. i hope he continues to make the same complains for the next 20 years about arsenal beating Chelsea.

  14. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies.

    Nice match report boss.

Busquets I would like, but not at the expense of Coq as Merse suggested. yes he has his own opinion but sometimes its best to listen twice as much as one talks. At least that is why we have two ears and one mouth.

We simply have to beat WHU. If they play like they did in the Europa lge vs Birkirkara and in their next round then we should put them to the sword. And BE RUTHLESS. Not stop at 3-0 or 4-0….but dish out a lesson. Make the other teams think twice.

As Kev said….Cech and Sanchez will not allow the others to be complacent. To them add Coquelin.

  15. andrewh1313 says:

Morning, great read. I actually think it was naive not to shake hands, just close your eyes as you do it. Otherwise its back page headlines in the tabloids rather than the headline Arsenal beat Chelsea. Better still if AW had held out his hand and the douchebag walked past as the press couldn’t avoid that.

  16. Hell Raising Devil says:

What everyone is not commenting about much….but its there, is the fact that we have only conceded one goal during pre season. That means we kept 4 clean sheets….vs Singapore, vs Lyon, vs Wolfsburg and now the Chavs.

Yes its pre season but it still is good not to concede. Hopefully we will start stacking clean sheets as the season progresses.

  17. rico says:

Wavy, I’m with Kev. Alexis and Cech will keep them focussed, as I hope will Wenger and Bould..

🙂 Joe, that’s what hangovers do for you…

Eduardo, Bellerin did have a few dodgy moments but some great ones too. Not sure I caught any flapping from Cech on crosses though…

  18. allezkev says:

Coach, do you think that Debuchy could do a job as a def/mid, just in an emergency capacity of course…?

If Wenger doesn’t bring anyone in, then he’s gotta have some options…

Arteta and Flamini are still with us, of course…

  19. rico says:

    Thanks Devil, Andrew..

I bet Coquelin is one of the first names on the team-sheet these days. No way will he be going anywhere imo. He just needs some help. Whether AW resolves that from within for the big games or signs someone remains to be seen but I don’t see a player in the current squad to be a midfield rock…

  20. Dex says:

    Thanks

If we are in for a midfielder (and I hope we are) then I would love AW to go for Lars Bender. I really don’t think is suited to the PL. He will have so many hissy fits every time he gets kicked!

But I’m happy to see what happens between now and Sept 1st and bask in the winning afterglow…

  21. rico says:

Andrew, I used to feel the same but having listened to that moron since he returned to the Chavs and the way he is constantly digging at Wenger and Arsenal, I’d rather punch him than shake his hand….

  22. Hell Raising Devil says:

Kev….thanks for bringing that idea up.

Imo Debuchy would not be a good one there. Yes he can be a good CB, but I feel that we have another player who is very disciplined and a very good reader of the game who is able to play there in an emergency. His name??? Nacho Monreal. I feel that he will be a good DM. He is tidy, is not afraid to get stuck in and knows how to read a game well.

  23. Brian Price says:

    Great post and summing up.
    I had a conversation with a Chelsea fan in the pub last night. It went;
Him: Why didn’t Wenger shake his hand?
Me: Because he thinks that Mourinho is a twat.
Him: then why did he shake all the Arsenal players hands?
Me: Because he IS a twat.

I thought Theo did OK, perhaps the best part of his game was that he made Giroud try.

    Brian

  24. rico says:

Kev, good shout re Debuchy, or maybe it will be Chambers…

Joe, not so affective though… lol or should that be effective? lol

  25. rico says:

I meant your hangover Joe, I was on sparkling water the entire evening and afternoon… 🙂

Thanks Brian, I like that re Mourinho….

  26. tsgh says:

Rico- Busquet is a solid player. But I think he might be too old to adapt to the EPL. I don’t consider him mobile enough. At Barca he has Messi, iniesta, Rakitic doing the pressing very high up the field. He then uses his brains to read the game/quench the danger.

These days I try to stay away from the CDM debates. Most people have different views on what they think our CDM should be… 😉

I hope I am not misquoting Adam from earlier, but like him I think it is always too late if the team is reliant on our back 5 to defend…

No matter how one may want to label PV04, there is no doubt he performed most of his defensive duties in the opponents half; that was what Gatuso did for Milan 10 or so years back and what Vidal did for Juve until he left.

That is also what Pep (BM) bought him for; Pep mentioned last week he wanted to win the ball more often in the opposition half…

  27. tsgh says:

It must be added that I thought AW’s best piece of tactical ingenuity was playing Ramsey in the hold between ramires and Matic.

Because Ramsey covers so much ground John Terry/matic was not allowed to pick the ball up and orchestrate the Chelsea ttacks from deep.

  28. allezkev says:

Cheers Coach, yes, Monreal is a fabulous footballer…

I’ll be interested to see how Bielik performs in the LC…

  29. Joe says:

Tsgh I have the same worries about Busquets adapting to the PL. At least when we only have one DM the back 5 earn their money.

  30. tsgh says:

😀 Joe. That is one way of looking at it.

Watching Per chasing Agbonlahor (spelling) or Montero on a wekennd after he has played mid-week in the UCL away is always a sight to beheld… 🙂

The old tactics of 5 being responsible for defending although the FB’s are also required to provide width is very haunting to say the least.

  31. Adam says:

Busquets is one of those players that you don’t really notice until he pretends to be fouled and goes into his cheating mode by falling on the floor and looking at the ref. But he is a great recirculator of the ball and always seems to be able to pick a pass. I don’t know if I can see him leaving Barcelona though.

  32. potter says:

The whole purpose of the team handshaking was to steal the headlines and make everyone talk about him and not his team’s demise. Mourinho is a calculating tactician that knows how to play the media who in turn in their desperation for a headline/ talking point , lap up all of his antics. It was not the best display yesterday , both teams will play better as the season progresses but it nailed Mourinho once and for all and now both he and his disciples will at least have to change their future scripts.

  33. Adam says:

TS. When I watch him I realise what a fantastic job he does for the team. But who could forget the way he carried on when we played them a few years ago with his sneaky look through his fingers at the ref to see if he had managed to buy the non-existent foul against him?

  34. potter says:

Per doesn’t do chasing anyone in any match CL or PL at any time.

Not sure about that :- he caught Cesc with a couple of purlers albeit he isn’t the quickest either

  35. retsub1 says:

    Morning Rico nice post

Glad you made mention of Rockys family thought it was a very nice touch.

I agree with you on Coquelin. Leave the boy alone, his confidence must be great, by all means get him support but leave him as the 1st name on the team sheet.

Thought Kos was motm yesterday. I also thought it was great that every time Cech gathered the ball he looked up and seem to say ” is that the best you’ve got “. Or did I just imagine it?

  36. rico says:

Thanks Ts. Agree re Paddy, he was one of the best for breaking up an opposition attack and turning it into one of our own..

Hope AW can find someone a little like him before Sept 1st…

  37. Hell Raising Devil says:

haha I liked that about Cech retsub. that is a good one.

However, I think that Cech keeps looking for whom to pass. As Rico and I commented a few days ago….its wonderful seeing a keeper distribute a ball to one of OUR players instead of just hoofing it.

  38. Dublingunner says:

Morning, good read as ever, Rico. Fantastic win yesterday, still getting my head around cech being an arsenal player.great to have him, 3 games, 3 trophies, kos was fantastic too,
I think Busquets would be a fantastic addition to our squad.
Vincent del bosque couldn’t speak highly enough of Sergio, once saying, “If I were a player, I would like to be like Busquets.
He also said of him “You watch the game, and you don’t see Busquets, you watch Busquets, and you see the whole game”. if theres a chance to do a deal, it should be done. imo.

  39. tsgh says:

    🙂 Joe, scott.

Pires use to be a known diver or to put it correctly Bobby exaggerated contact very well. Harry Redknapp still gets radio time because of the ‘unjust’ he supposedly received…

  40. tsgh says:

Dg- I still can’t understand why kosser hasn’t got his own song.

Watching Mangala and Kompany act like they had their shoe laces tied together makes me appreciate Kosser so so much…

  41. rico says:

Thanks Dublin. Seems he’s a bit of a diver though which I didn’t know. But I do think AW would get that out of his game…

  42. Dublingunner says:

yes it,s a side to his game, that would not be appreciated in england, pity, seemly he has said “diving is just intelligent play”.
Kosser, for me, is like a fine wine, has matured with age.

  43. Canadian Gooner says:

Good Morning to The Lady of the House and all fellow Gooners in residence.

Rico- Great summation of the game. No real surprises from Chelski. They played their typical lowbrow game as most of us predicted and you well described.

You weren’t the o alnly one this game/trophy meant something to. You only had to look at Maureen Yo and John Terry;s faces to see that it also meant something to them. Their faces like thunder were priceless.

Onward and upward to the new season.

  44. Canadian Gooner says:

Kev – Wasn’t that better than a nail biting penalty shootout?

No controversy about Ox’s goal. He was clearly onside, no handball, no fouls, etc. Maureen was left to complain about the state of the pitch and the weather.

Potter – A very good point about Maureen using the missed handshake to deflect attention away from his own team’s failures.

  45. scottfromoz says:

Ginge, making the most of contact is a part of the game I can accept, though begrudgingly.
Diving, without contact, is something I’ll never accept.
Staying down, pretending to be injured, no matter if contact was made or not, is also something I’ll condemn forever.
    It’s cheating, nothing less.
It makes my blood boil .

  46. Canadian Gooner says:

Devil – I hope your nickname of Jack Wheelchair is unmerited for the rest of the season. Arsenal and Jack need an injury free season.

  47. tsgh says:

Just found out a former colleague passed away after years of suffering from PTSD. He got little support from our so called leaders…

  48. frednerk says:

    Playing defensive/Mid the right way
is a stone bank certainty for a booking
    every game.
You have to be aggressive 60/40 tackles
    are part and parcel……But
Coq could learn a bit, I think from Matic..
    apart from Kosser..he had an
    outstanding game for the chavs.

    As we have said before..Ramsey
is not the answer..we know the stats
say he makes a lot of tackles.
    But he won’t sit….
Wenger seems to think crowding out
the midfield with ballplayers who havn’t
a clue how to tackle will get us by,
it was for all……to see yesterday.

    I can’t see us signing a striker,
    with what we have upfront..But
As regarding transfers and what we need
    I’m like everyone else..always wrong.

  49. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – I see you did get your wish, at least in part. Cahill did get a little bit of a split lip or bloody nose, but it wasn’t from the BFG.

  50. Hell Raising Devil says:

CG….I hope that as well. Jack needs an injury free season for us to see his full potential. Yet, until he stops getting those injuries (i hope the one he has now is really one for a FEW DAYS ONLY), his nickname shall stick.

  51. tsgh says:

JW just needs to change his style of play.
I still don’t get the fascination with him running with the ball 10 yards and then going down clutching his ankle after he has lost the ball or after he has been fouled.

  52. rico says:

Totally agree re Ramsey Fred, to sit is not his game and I can’t see him changing, but then why should he, sign a guy who will…

Cg, oh I laughed when he went flying into the ground, Nacho wasn’t it?

  53. allezkev says:

CG, at no time, did I think we’d lose yesterday…

I haven’t felt that way about Arsenal vs Chav games since Ranieri was in charge.

You know – and I don’t want to read too much into yesterday’s game or go OTT – it was almost as if Chelsea’s recent hoodoo has run its course, and that the pendulum has swung back into our favour…

It wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal didn’t take 6 points off of the Chavs this season…

  54. allezkev says:

You know what Ginge, whether Jack runs with the ball or lays it off quickly, opponents are still gonna target his ankles..

  55. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – I’m not sure if it was Nacho is own players. As long as Nacho bounced back, that was all i was concerned about.

With that, it’s Good Night (well early morning) from me and Good Afternoon to you all.

    Keep The Faith!

  56. tsgh says:

    you are probably right kev.

Ramsey 2.5 seasons ago played 13 games as a CDM with Arteta setting an European record with per and Kosser for the best defensive record.
2 seasons ago he mainly played as one half of the double pivot until we went 4-1-4-1 freeing ramsey to score more goals…

I think ramsey can play that role perfectly if asked to…

If Pep was to take over from AW, based on Pep’s history he would end up playing Le coq as a CB..

  57. arsenal11730 says:

    Nice post as always Rico.
AW will be more tactical this year. Keep players fresh via rotation. Hopefully play attacking formations against the mid to lower table teams, use TW striker pace against top teams.
Teams play us differently when TW is up top. It was interesting to see OG bully them when he came on with his good movement. We do not need Benzema, I strongly feel TW,OG and AS will be top strkeforce in division. My only suggestion is LE Coq, brilliant as he is, many yellow cards and points accumulation. Maybe Arteta will play against the weaker teams
    Cheers

  58. tsgh says:

    agreed A11730

My concern with Le Coq as our prime CDM, is that he reactions to situations instead of being proactive. I guess at 23y.o it is understandable for him to rely on his physicality’s than brains…

  59. frednerk says:

I know where you coming from ts.
It all stems from the training ground
winners allways dominate training matches and stand out
the skills just do enough and hope to be picked.

Pep likes to experiment with formations
    and players..
Looking at a lot of his players the other night
    hardly any looked happy.

  60. tsgh says:

Fred- I think BM players have come to accept that the German cup is very competitive but has no bearing on how the season will transpire…

In my view Pep has used that competition to trial out his away formation for the upcoming season…

  61. arsenal11730 says:

Agreed TS – Le Coq seems flamboyant is his reactions and gestures to ref – Sure card after 2 or 3 times.
Agreed Rico – I forgot Welbz – He could surprise us, he is Premiership ready, seems assimilated well into squad and I always believe he has a point to prove to LVG.
I want to remain humble but am quietly confident the boys have the necessary belief for a nice title tilt.
The air around us seems to have changed – Even AW may be watching more tape studiously????
The rumour of Cechs coach coming over can only be good news for our defenders.
    Cheers

  62. frednerk says:

Ts..I always make a judgement on what I see
and Pep and the players were spitting feathers
after nickys two goals. Check it out.

  63. tsgh says:

    I get your point fred…

I think the timing for the equaliser from nicky B was the issue.

When it went to penalties, Alonso missing the pen put the ball in Neuer’s court to save them as Wofsburg penalties were sublime…

  64. frednerk says:

On full backs playing midfield Ts
Many fullbacks start off as wingers
a lot can adapt players with a football brain
    can convert easely it seems.

  65. Bob John says:

Hi all. funny how the shield is always counted in Moronho’s list of trophies but when we win it it becomes a pre-season friendly. If you watch the non handshake again it’s clear that Moronho turns his back as he sees Arsene coming but of course the press who call hin ‘Jose’ and Arsene ‘Wenger’ would have you believe otherwise.

  66. rico says:

Hi Bob, I couldn’t agree more and imo that was the only reason Mourinho did what his did with the players.

Also, spot on re Jose & Wenger and it’s the same with our players, they are always referred to using surnames but Terry, Rooney, Lampard etc, always by their first name…

  67. Tai says:

    Evening All…

    Excellent post Rico.

Busquets? I know a lot of crazy things happen these days around the world of football…but what would be the one reason Barca would want to part with their second most important player after Messi?

  68. Malaga gooner says:

    Evening Rico and the house
    Fine post
Busquets would be a superb signing, has everything that would suit our game, add a class forward and we would reach great heights in Europe

  69. tsgh says:

    Micko,
Stop moaning. The rain has to fall somewhere. :-)didn’t know you were in Scotland?re. bank holidays.

Did you see Sky sports news outdoing themselves with football manager stats to talk about players?:D

  70. tsgh says:

    Dear oh dear… wtf???

    Piers MorganVerified account
    ‏@piersmorgan
    We CAN get Benzema.
We just have to make RM an offer they can’t refuse.
Start at £65m & go up by £5m a bid until they capitulate.

I can’t believe folks were listening to Piers when it was fashionable to slate AW…

  71. Micko says:

tsgh, your worth your weight in salt, the house wouldn’t be the same without ya matey ! It’s not true what the others say.
