Denilson OUT!! Is Wenger fibbing again and Theo's in for some stick!

Ok, Leeds up tonight at Elland Road in a 3rd round replay of the FA Cup. Wenger said earlier in the week that he wants to go for all four competitions, he also said he will buy a Centre Half following the ‘breakdown’ of Vermaelen and the injury sustained by Sebastian Squillaci.

The team selection will show just how much Wenger wants us to get through to the next round of the cup – make 8 or 9 changes to the side that beat West Ham and I won’t be too confident, make 3, maybe 4 at most and I’ll believe him all the way.
But, should he make those 8 or 9 changes, we perform badly and get knocked out or the FA Cup, then wouldn’t that make any Arsenal fan doubt his words about taking every competition seriously?

Now I have absolutely no evidence of this suggestion so don’t have a pop at me, it’s just ‘MY THOUGHTS’ – I  have a feeling that young Spanish defender Ignasi Miquel will make his first team debut tonight and should he play well enough, Wenger will put his cheque book away, rub his hands and think ‘hoorah, he’ll fill the void until Squillaci is fit’…..

He’s already suggested there are ‘other options within the squad’. I hope I’m wrong, very wrong but you just know Wenger, he’s done it before and no doubt he’ll do it again. As long as the Transfer Window is open I’ll keep hope but I won’t hold my breath.

Today he suggests he is no further forward is his search for a defender, there are plenty ‘out there’ so why?

If the interview in The Sun this morning is right and Denilson has said what’s been printed, then he can go now. To be fair, in my opinion he could have gone a long time ago but now, he has gone the lowest he can go. Not only does he suggest that Almunia is the better goal keeper at the club which in itself is way off the mark, he has this to say about his captain:

Fabregas is the captain but he is not a leader, It’s a personality thing and a leader can be young. It’s something they are born with.

We are lacking leadership and we need leadership to go forward. There isn’t a leader. I don’t see one player as a leader. At Arsenal it’s more of a collective team at the moment, everyone is talking – but a leader is always important for a team.

Out with him!

http://arseblog.com/2011/01/leeds-preview-the-sun-charlie-wyett-are-content-thieves/ has the real interview.

Anyway, back to the game, what can be said? When Leeds came to us they defended well but they were assisted by some dreadful play by our strike force.

Kasper Schmeichel was on form and made a few outstanding saves during the game but a stupid ‘tackle’ by Denilson gave Leeds the upper hand until Captain Marvel and Theo Walcott came on and together they saved our day. Nikki Bendtner couldn’t hit a barn door that night and Andrey Arshavin wasn’t a lot better in front of goal either. In fact Arshavin should have made it 1-0 within fifteen minutes of the game starting, had he done so, I doubt very much if fixture would be being played tonight…

Who will play in the defence, will Sagna come back at right back, will he move into the middle and give Djourou a rest, will Song drop back and Denilson play in midfield?

Will Eboue retain his place, or will he be moved up the pitch and allow Theo to be rested? Theo’s in for some stick tonight from the Leeds fans after his admission – well, I saw his interview at the weekend and he said he was touched before he went over, so is that really a dive? Not in my book, do people want to see serious injury just to justify a player going over? Nah, I hope Theo shuts any abusive Leeds fans up by getting a couple of goals.

I don’t know the answers, none of us do right now but if it was down to me, I’d start with the strongest, and bring a few off when we/if we are home and dry… But I’m not Wenger, nor are you, so we’ll leave it to him and then pick the bones tomorrow.

If of course there are any bones to pick, let’s hope not, eh?

So, for a change the message has to be not the same as last time please Arsenal, actually, nothing like the home fixture is required tonight, we need a bigger, better and much more clinical performance is required to beat Leeds tonight – do that and we can carry on just what the club needs – winning, momentum and confidence….

Isn’t that what every Arsenal fan wants?

Have a good day all…..

  1. rico says:

morning guy – denilson is plain stupid, to undermine your captain in such a manner… like you say, he isn’t fit to clean cesc’s boots…..

  2. rico says:

Hi Colin – thanks, i’m sure not all will agree with me though but you just don’t say what denilson has – that is of course if its true but you dont pluck comments like that from the sky….

will be interesting to see if he plays tonight….

  3. rico says:

Hi bops, mind the ‘c’ word please, it’s our only rule, thanks 🙂

you know what its like, once it’s printed in one paper its everywhere…

  4. rico says:

Is that real colin?? they can have him, give us scott parker in exchange…. oh no, surely not a swap/cash for upson…

  5. Colin says:

In this morning’s Telegraph…but have baulked at the £15m asking price!! So they may try and get him on loan….

  6. Rocky Jay says:

the main points from denilsons interview to suggest he no longer deserves to wear the red and white:
start off with the part where he said ”everyone dreams about playing for the Big teams, barcelona and the manchester clubs” so now all of a sudden we(the arsenal) are a small team??
”Almunia is the best keeper in the team”, well ofcourse he is and Denilson is the Best all action box to box midfielder that has ever donned the red and white! Forget Petit, Vieira and the rest!
”We need a leader” Why dont you start leading the team if we need a leader??
”Gilberto was a good leader” as much as i love Gilberto and all that he did for the arsenal, he was not a good influential leader. Denilson himself goes on to say Gilberto was the shy type!
And did you realize that he calls playing soccer as ”work” Just shows his attitude towards playing for Arsenal! Its like me, am at work, and today i dont feel like drafting any accounts or checking any of my juniors work, so i decide to read through arsenal blogs! Is that the same with him?? There are some days he doesn’t feel like working, so he lets Rooney, Nani et al run past him and he makes no effort?? For goodness sake, he is a footballer!! No real football fan can call playing the game ”WORK”!!!
lets say if it was Nasri, Fabregas, Song, Vermaelen, Sagna, Wilshere, RvP and their likes talking like that, then maybe their words would have been considered, but Denilson?? Christ!! I hate him even more now!!! He shud just feck off to the ”BIG clubs in Manchester and Barcelona”

  7. rico says:

Reports are suggesting that the interview has been twisted – the real denilson comment is this…

“I think that we lack leadership and without leadership we can’t move forward. You can walk forward a bit but then the same thing that’s happened will happen again. These things make us very sad but I don’t see a player at Arsenal who is a real leader. I can’t see a single one. Even if Fabregas is the captain, but he is not a leader to me.”

    Umm, is that much different??

  8. rico says:

Colin, Nikki isn’t worth £15M 😉 Let’s hope there is some substance in this story BUT, then he will need replacing as JET has just gone on loan to Cardiff..

He’ll learn a lot there, could be in a promotion battle ….

  9. rico says:

RockyJay, morning and good comment – he can’t even dislodge an aging Gilberto right now – that’s because he is not as good as he thinks he is…

  10. DC says:

Might I suggest you read Arseblogger who has the full story, which the Sun stole from him via Arsenal Brasil.

I don’t disagree with him. As much as I love him, Cesc is no Adams. We do not have a clear cut leader in the squad.

  11. nick tg says:

I think we should sell deno but for different reasons. He is just not good enough!and in same position we have Jack, cesc, rambo, diaby and landsbury all already better…He should keep mouth shut (tho tbh i agree with what he said as tho cesc super player+maybe leads by example he is not a proper captain. We still need an Adams,Keane style player…)The team i want to see tonight: Szeny,Gibbs,Kon,DJ,Sagna, song, deno, cesc, arsh, theo, chamak(subs:Shea,Clichy, eboue,Jack, nasri, rvp, bendtner)Ramsey, Miquel,Rosicky and Vela can be involved in the easier home games v wig+ip.

  12. Steve of Chiang Mai says:

I do love this quote from the Offside Arsenal though.

“…..although he (Denilson) did say that he thought Almunia was our best keeper, which is a pretty compelling argument for mandatory drug testing”

  13. Northern Gooner says:

Although Denilson isn’t the greatest player in the world he is in my opinion right regards the lack of leadership at Arsenal. Fabregas is no leader and we have lacked leadership for years (Henry was no leader either). If it was smart of him to say this in an interview is another matter…

  14. rico says:

SoCM 😆 re the drug testing, Almunia our best goalkeeper….. i have to disagree with him there….

NorthernG – i think many fans agree that cesc is not a leader in the way the Paddy and Adams were but telling the world is a bit stupid of denilson…

  15. Red Arse says:

    Nice Post Rico. Morning 🙂

I don’t think Denilson is the brightest spark but I am very cautious about translations and re-translations. Gives the dodgy dealers a chance to make mischief.

Denilson is not good enough for us anyway as was said above.

  16. rico says:

    Morning RA, thanks

The ‘proper’ interview is no different really to what The Sun has printed, Arseblog have the Brasil version..

Agee though, he isn’t good enough and this won’t help his cause one bit… Wenger must be livid…

  17. Leptuski says:

    Hey..
I watched the full Denilson interview and I don’t think he meant to disrespect Fab or anyone of his team mates. He just made comparison to the leadership under Sol and when the likes of Gilberto were in the team. I think such criticism should fire Cesc and others up. I believe we need a leader in every section of the team (defence, midfield & forward) aside the leadership confirmed by a captain’s band.

  18. rico says:

Colin, wenger has said that no-one has made his head ‘click’, defenders have been offered to arsenal but he hasn’t found the right one…

I hope he’s still looking and a lot further than our own training ground…

  19. Red Arse says:

    Rico,

You are right, “no comment” should be drummed into these guys, and that goes for Theo and his remarks about “diving” too.

What do you think about little Jack being arrested again? The omens do not look good. 🙁

  20. Steve Palmer says:

    morning all,
I think we have to leave this captains thing behind,Wenger puts up the captain, its a way to pay a player a bit more money, like a charge hand, when you think that, Cesc wanted out, it was a way of keeping him, he is not a leader, he speaks well in front of the camera’s and he picks what end we play that’s it, if you want a captain that would command respect, and the players to look up to look no further than Virminator, but whether he’ll ever play again is something else,Denilson is asking for Arsenal to install a leader and he is probably right, as for Denilson he is not good enough and should be moved on.

  21. Red Arse says:

Bye the way, I echo your comment re Upson.

If we buy him, I will bring forward my American trip as soon as I am better, and try and forget about Arsenal this season! 🙁

  22. Red Arse says:

Hi Steve, morning to you. 🙂

I think, if there was a crowd, the only one he would recognise would be Jack.

The solution might be for Jack to go out wearing a paper bag on his head when he is having a jolly. 🙂

    “Did you recognise Mr Wilshire?”
“No M’lud, but he was sporting a very fetching paper bag, at the time”.
    Case dismissed! Seemples. 🙂

  23. Will says:

    Morning guys.

    My thoughts.

If Song is played at CB, I think we could see Rambo start at DM.
I also don’t think Wenger will buy but now it is time for the board to remind him that the team makes more money, the more successful it is.
I hope Nik B never gets near our team again and West Ham buy him.
Is Arshavin doesn’t even try, he should be got rid of. Bad form I can handle, not even trying I can’t.

  24. rico says:

Morning Steve, for me it’s not about who our capatin is today, it’s about the idiot who felt the need to undermine, and at a time when we are doing pretty well…

  25. rico says:

Fingers crossed he isn’t coming our way RA…

Morning Will, For once i have to disagree with you re Rambo, he is no DM 🙁

  26. rico says:

Anyone is better that denilson Will 😉

I think Rambo is the long-term solution to Cesc, when he playerd alongside Song against Wolves last season, they ran the show…. then came his injury 🙁

As much as i hope song starts over denilson, i honestly believe we will see the latter play tonight….

  27. Red Arse says:

    Will,

I love your comments. Sensible and full of vim and vigour! 🙂

I do not expect SingaSong to play tonight, and I would hate it if they played him at CB. If AW rests JD and or Kosser I hope young Ignasi Miguel gets a chance. 6’4″ and fast! He has to breakthrough sometime. 🙂

  28. Will says:

As for the Leeds manager, can you say inciting?

I never want to see Nik B or Denilson anywhere near our team again.

  29. rico says:

I think Miquel will start too RA, like i say in the post, if he plays well, cheque book closed for another window…..

Will, he’s been encouraging the fans to give Theo stick hasn’t he? They are going to be noisy, jj will have to be in good voice to drown them out….

  30. Red Arse says:

    Will,

Theo was honest but terribly naive.

No one even knew he dived. It did not influence the game and I just could not see the point in “confessing”, especially as he has no intention of repeating it in the future.

Now even if he is genuinely tripped, refs will doubt him and the away fans are going to give him terrible stick. For what?

  31. rico says:

he talked about the diving incident, he said he was touched and then went over easily and that some would call it diving – he also said he is an honest man and would always be honest, that’s the way his family bought him up…

he had no regrets on speaking out, nor did his family, friends and team-mates…

  32. rico says:

RA, i’d rather he was like he is, than like Rooney, Gerrard and all – now they are cheats and on a weekly basis….

  33. Red Arse says:

I agree that morally you are both right.

What I meant tho’ was that in the eyes of many refs/oppo fans he will now be tarred with the same brush as those cheating bustards! 🙁

  34. Will says:

Maybe but maybe not RA. He said it was a mistake and he will never do it again. Maybe that honesty has helped him but us being Arsenal…

  35. rico says:

That’s a good point RA, thankfully the ref against the hammers didn’t let it cloud his judgement, Howard webb on the other hand….. 🙁

  36. rico says:

I love this headline on newsnow…

‘Arsenal line up shock swoop for Vermaelen replacement’

Any swoop Wenger is to make for a centre half will be a ‘shock’ 🙂

  37. rico says:

I watched it on another pc Will, was that Webb giving the decision his way??

I think we’ll be shocked with who he buys…

I Still think it will be Mexes….

  38. Will says:

I would have loved Mexes a few years ago but with JD and TV in the squad, I think we are full with ball playing centre halves. What we need now is a commanding, dominating centre half that can clear high balls into the box.

  39. rico says:

Back to Samba then Will, Cheap, EPL ready and French speaking – the only thing that might put Wenger off is he’s not crocked 😉

  40. Will says:

Ha ha, you could be right.

I know this is a new idea but I would like a centre back that could be brought in for certain teams.

Play Stoke, bring in the mean bastard.
Play Blackburn, bring in the mean bastard.

    Does that make sense?

  41. rico says:

Absolute sense Will, can you have a word with Wenger….

I have to pop off for a bit, walk the hound 🙂

Back in a hour or so….

  42. oliver says:

morning all…interesting comments from denilson – some (almunia) absurd and delusional, others not so much. if he is comparing leadership styles between cesc, and say, sol or others, then i get his point. but if he says cesc cannot lead, i disagree – i think we often need more than cesc’s “leadership by example” style, but he certainly led at the brittania last season…and in the first leg versus barca.

denilson, however, really should look in the mirror before he comments on others. i understand he was asked his opinion, but having just been (rightly) criticized by our captain for his stupid tackle in the ems fixture versus leeds – and on the heels of some lazy, indifferent performances in the past year – he cannot claim the moral high ground here…

regardless, we have a game tonight, so….

  43. oliver says:

maybe…but if he wants to pick a fight publicly because of hurt feelings over our captain calling him out, it is time for him to find another club…

watch him start in the center of midfield tonight…

  44. Rocastle says:

    Afternoon peeps.

So the Leeds manager is having a grizzle about our Theo?!

If I was AW I’d recall Sanchez Watt.

    Cheeky Gimp.

  45. K-TR7 says:

Afternoon all.denilson should keep his mouth shut.trying to undermine our best player/talisman/captain will always end up with him losing.cesc leads by example so does Gerrard.football is changing and players need to take collective responsibility not just waiting for one man to do the job.thats why Aw said that we’ll always have 11 captains on the pitch.

  46. T-buzz says:

    Wuzzup Peoples!

Hope alls well…. looking forward to the game tonight as long as Denilson doesnt play!

Anyone seen the boy Ignasi Miguel play? I hear he’s 6Ft 3″ and quite good in the air?

  47. rico says:

Ahhhhh, i love some of the stuff that gets written, its got to me a joke hasn’t it… hasn’t it????

Reports emerging over the last few days suggest that long-time transfer target Emir Saphic, a defender from Montpellier, will join Aston Villa as Gerard Houllier continues to work magic in this transfer window.

Arsene Wenger had been tracking the Bosnian international for quite some time but it now looks as if Saphic will move to Villa Park, with Richard Dunne apparently heading to the Emirates, in a move that will satisfy all parties.

  48. oliver says:

hi rico – i just came back as well. i’ll do the report for tonight’s match – i do not anticipate any problems in that regard.

  49. oliver says:

is it even worth commenting on? we have arsene remarks about how his “search” is going – that should tell us right where we stand…no additions this window.

  50. rico says:

Hi oliver – thank you – i’ll be able to watch without paper and pencil to hand now – if i write them i have to make notes as i forget by the morning 😉

  51. SD-London says:

    HI MY PEOPLES.
    Many things happening today.
    Denilson wants to leave,
Aston Villa gone mad by paying £24mil for D Bent,
    and many more

  52. rico says:

Hi SD, i wish he did want to leave…..

Cant believe what Bent has been bought for, and to think they won’t pay £15M for our Nikki 😉

  53. Colin says:

Apparently we are making wholesale changes to the starting 11 that started at upton park for tonight’s game……

  54. rico says:

That is exactly what we all feared yet knew would happen… It’s bloody crazy – the only player that really needs to be rested is Djourou, the rest, well they should play and get this game over as soon as possible and then make the changes….

I can see us getting beat tonight….

  55. SD-London says:

    Red Arse !

Denilson had a dig at Fabregas saying he is not a leader.
How else do you tell the coach to sell you as quick as possible apart from saying that his captain is a rubbish leader ? Tell me .

Wenger wouldn’t tolerate any more dressing room pressure.

  56. T-buzz says:

rico, that is quite a possibility if he does rotate 7-8 players. Leeds arent going to use Fringe players, are they? so, why should we?

  57. SD-London says:

Well peoples, take it from me, Wenger is going to use thesame team that played the first leg minus Denilson 🙂

  58. Red Arse says:

To change the topic a bit, have you noticed that the youth policy AW has been applauded for or vilified for, depending on your viewpoint, has seemingly slipped.

What I am referring to is, young Chamberlain at Southampton who seemed nailed on to come to us, is going to ….. Man Citeh.

Oh, and the brilliant Lukaku who the Chavs and ourselves were also heavily linked with is going to …. wait for it ….. Man Citeh.

Badly advised kids in my opinion, still the filthy lucre draws them all in!

  59. Red Arse says:

    Rico,

As I understand it, and I’m not a fan of rumours it is true, Lukaku has a pre-contract agreed by his dad with Citeh, and he will sign on July 18th, according to a Belgian newspaper report.

Ditto with Chamberlain, his agent (his dad) has agreed a deal with Citeh to be concluded within the next week. The club may want to be sensible, but his dad calls the shots, as reported in the London Metro.

Hope they are wrong, but I think the money talks.

  60. rico says:

Will, so that means City won’t get him…..

RA, if City get the Ox kid, then he will be ruined, he’ll never get a game while they spend spend spend….

  61. rico says:

City can spend all they want, but along the way, good/great plyers will be cast aside for no better….

    Johnson????

  62. rico says:

Bigger fool the idiots that go there then – just look at SWP, Wayne Bridge, Glen Johnson, Steve Sidwell… etc etc… if players choose that then let them sit and get splinters…

it sure won’t bother Arsenal or any other club….

  63. Will says:

Everton are sending scouts to watch Arsenal’s Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner in the Gunners’ game against Leeds United this evening.
According to reports, Everton boss David Moyes is keen on bolstering his strike force following the loss of Yakubu on loan to Leicester City and sees either Arsenal’s Vela or Bendtner as the answer.
Rumour has it that Arsene Wenger is willing to let one of his forwards go, possibly on loan, in order to give them some playing time.
Arsenal face Leeds United at Elland Road tonight in a 3rd round replay.

  64. K-TR7 says:

In all PL/CL/CC/FA cup games that cesc has scored we’ve never lost.he has netted 54 goals for us in 47 games and as a result we’ve won 38 of those games.the only time he has scored and we lost was at the community shield when the chavs beat us 2-1 at the Millenium stadium.

  65. rico says:

    AFC

Szczesny, Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Gibbs, Song, Denilson, Nasri, Arshavin, Bendtner, Chamakh

    Subs to be announced….

  66. oliver says:

i see the lineups. he’s buying nobody. i don’t like song and denilson in the same lineup. i don’t think bendtner deserves any more starts for a while…

  67. oliver says:

i am also a little concerned that there is no cover for gibbs. didn’t he recently get hurt very early in a cl tie? with no clichy available, arsene had to throw eboue on there, and he had an awful game. cannot remember which match it was..

  68. oliver says:

denilsong is stifling. i hope that samir’s inclusion can offset that. i don’t think it ever works. last time we saw bendtner and chamakh, they could not get out of each other’s way…i understand the need to rotate some, but some of these players don’t belong in our squad any more, never mind starting.

  69. oliver says:

i think we all have concerns about this lineup…but it is what it is…it is up to the players to make this work…

  70. oliver says:

nice move for the goal…i’ve said it before – i don’t think bendtner should be in the squad, let alone starting tonight.

  71. oliver says:

nope…he and denilson have both been poor – as i feared. chamakh looks sharp, koscielny also impressing…we should be at least 3-0 up by now.

  72. rico says:

nik and aa both should have scored….. at least AA looks as if he’s trying, i actually feel for him, everything he tries goes wrong…..

  73. oliver says:

dean and crew missed the foul on arshavin in the buildup to johnson’s goal…

nevertheless, bendtner and denilson are worse than i thought…our back four has been outstanding – how much a calming influence is sagna? skipper samir has been excellent, arshavin looks up for it, even if he cannot find the net with the ball literally on the goalline and the keeper nowhere. chamakh looks like he has no confidence…

  74. rico says:

i thought chamakh is doing ok….. really unlucky not to score, quality, fierce header goal bound, but for Kaspers last ditch hand….

  75. oliver says:

not only did chamakh have that fine header, he laid a goal on a plate for arshavin a couple of minutes later. they may be ineffective right now, but both of them are trying hard – low on confidence – and should have the chance to work their way through it. the other forward is an entirely different story…

  76. Stef says:

AA is all over the place his not at his best but u can’t argue that he is not trying 😉

Chamakh is playing worse then AA, I didn’t notice B52 on the field, and Denilson made some good passes but to the Leads players 😛

  77. Rocastle says:

Get off his back, arshavin is a touch player. It’s all down to millimetres. He’s been really unlucky. Bit of perspective. Think back to the Graham and Howe days. A player like arshavin wasnt heard of. Get behind the lad.

  78. oliver says:

rocky, i think most of us are pleased with arshavin’s effort and are showing sympathy that he is having such a hard time scoring. it is bendtner that has raised my ire…

  79. Stef says:

I agree Rocastle maybe we expect 4 goals from him in every game, thing is that doesn’t happened every day 😀

  80. Will says:

Can someone tell Nik B that when he loses the ball it is customary to try and get it back amd not just walk away?

    Thank you.

  81. oliver says:

arshavin just cannot buy a goal at the moment…keep trying, law of averages dictates sooner or later one will go in…

  82. oliver says:

robin and cesc on – i was hoping that the latter would not have to play. but leave either arshavin or chamakh on, not bendtner.

  83. rico says:

AA has been a split second away all night, he’s going to hit form any day now, where as nik and Denilson… i’m not so sure…

i’m off guys, real early start in the morning…. 🙁 🙁

  84. Rocastle says:

Night rico, spot on with AA.

obviously depending on the Ipswich result(!) a few Of us are gonna hit the gunners bar or the pins fir the final then a curry in brick lane. Rico and everyone else without a ticket are cordially invited.

Might even buy rico a shandy for all her good work…(If we win)….(by 4 goals)…

  85. oliver says:

ok rico. i have the report. it will be in your inbox later tonight.

something to ponder: were bendtner and chamakh individually that bad, or does pairing them make them look that bad? they were terrible last time arsene played them together and even worse together tonight. is it a coincidence that bendtner actually looked like a football as soon as robin came on?

  86. oliver says:

ok, that’s it. 1-3 flattered leeds big time, but at least we are through to the next round. hopefully arsene learned some things about his players – and combinations – tonight. now we need to win our league cup second leg next week.

  87. Rocastle says:

    Spot on Oliver.

I think AW gets it the wrong way around. I ttotally understand roarion but play at least 8 Of your best team, get 3 up then pull the players in need of a rest off. That’s what he did with the invisibles. He’s changed it and had to chase 2 cup ties.

  88. Steve Palmer says:

If west Ham dosnt want Bentner, i’ll have him to dig my garden anything but dont let him play again

  89. Stef says:

Oliver I think u might be right about Chamakh and Bendtner, but he was playing better in second half even b4 RVP introduction in the game, but he was lost again in the last 20 minutes.
Did u noticed the director of the game wondering why Denilson wasn’t changed when Nasri left the field I find that very funny 😆
