Deadline Day – Caicedo or Jorginho?

Morning all.

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have spent the last couple of years moving older players. Aubameyang, Ozil, Kolasinac, Mustafi, Luiz, Lacazette etc. They’ve moved on players who couldn’t, or wouldn’t, buy into Mikel Arteta’s ideas so why on earth would signing Jorginho from Chelsea be in the club’s plans right now? Premier League experience, fit, ready, able, knows European football and he’s Brazilian! This has David Luiz written all over it, but, it was for the remainder of the season only, I suppose it wouldn’t be that bad.

One has to wonder why, if Brighton have told Arsenal that Moises Caicedo is not for sale this month, the club have bothered focusing on him. Logic suggests that Brighton have named their price and now Arsenal need to either offer that amount or risk going through the remainder of the season hoping Thomas Partey stays fit, Mo Elneny soon returns and Sambi Lokonga is prepared to step up. Either that or Jakub Kiwior is ready for a stint in midfield. Or sign Jorginho!

One has to look at the figures above and have nothing but admiration for Brighton FC and the way the club is being run but, at what stage do their fans say stop selling and start being even more ambitious than they are? Southampton used to be the ‘sign them cheap and sell big’ club but look where they are now. Whilst self self sufficiency is admirable, every single move a club running in such a way, has to be almost perfect. Brighton have been smart in the transfer department, very smart in my opinion. They’ve become a selling club for sure yet they’re continuing to improve on the pitch.

Arsenal however, have been awful but have thankfully got to the stage now where even if other clubs came in for our players, most of them anyway, I hope Arsenal say no. Either that or not settle for less than anything other a vastly overinflated fee. As Brighton do for their players because £80 million for Moises Caicedo is bonkers in my opinion but as said yesterday, he’s young, he knows the Premier League and if rumours are to be believed, he wants to come to Arsenal. If Arsenal think he’s the right player, they’ll have to pay the fee Brighton want, otherwise you can bet the club in west London will. No, not Fulham.

Anyway, let’s see what Deadline Day brings.

Catch up in the comments.

Good morning Rico, is it suggested that we are buying him? £12 million must reflect his age if we are buying, but how much will he demand in wages and I can’t see him accepting less than a two and a half year contract.

Jorginho to Arsenal, here we go! Deal agreed on £12m fee, Chelsea accept conditions and documents are being prepared 🚨⚪️🔴 #AFC

Personal terms agreed, contract until 2024 with option further year.

First contact revealed yesterday night — medical booked.

    Arteta, key factor.

Personally , I’m for this short-term fix to the midfield Issue, of it means making a more long-term move next summer such as Declan Rice’s. Still don’t understand all this hullabaloo from a certain section of the fanbase . Arteta & team are smart!

    Morning Rico and all,
So according to reports Aston villa want to take Lokonga on loan and we have agreed to buy Jorginho and Caicedo, could be a busy day.

  5. Kyalo Mũsyĩmi says:

Hi Aussie Geoff, it’s Crystal Palace in for Lokonga, and not Aston Villa…

“Crystal Palace are interest in Albert Sambi Lokonga, talks are taking place on potential loan deal until June 🚨🔵🔴 #CPFC

Final decision up to Arsenal and the player…@FabrizioRomano

  6. Cicero says:

Elneny has had surgery on a significant knee injury, no time scale for recovery has been indicated. From arsenal.com.

  7. Kyalo Mũsyĩmi says:

    Copied from the telegraph;

Jorginho does not fit Arsenal’s transfer strategy – so why does this move make sense?,👇

…”One of the main reasons Arsenal have wanted to sign a midfielder this month is because of an injury to Mohamed Elneny, the backup to Thomas Partey. They feared it would be serious and it has now been confirmed, following a lot of assessments, that Elneny will be out for “an extended period of time” due to a knee issue….”

  8. potter says:

Never really been an admirer of Jorginho it may be the way that Chelsea have used him . Certainly he is holding his place in the Italian team so he has to have something about him .
If we are to have a direct comparison with Lokonga then I would say that it is a step up with the bonus that Lokonga gets 6 months tutelage under PV4 who knows a bit about playing midfield. In all for what he is costing , it’s not the worst bit of business.

  9. andrewh1313 says:

Afternoon rico, house. Sad for Elneny.

Heard Jorginho never gets injured, that will soon change! A player useful to come on and see out time maybe. And knows a few dark arts. But really wanted a player to rotate with our other two, and that’s assuming no further injuries. But he may slow down the midfield, and we are always best with some pace.

  10. Joaquim Moreira says:

I think that Jorginho is more reliable than Lokonga who should go to Palace on loan.
However, I prefer Caicedo. We were never happy, as far as I can remember, with these loans coming from Chelsea..

  11. Sue says:

Hi Rico.. Apparently we’re to trigger the option of extending Elneny’s contract by a further year. I’m trying to convince myself that Jorginho is a good signing, but I’m struggling.. makes me think back to Cech, Willian, Luiz – really not a fan of doing business with the Chavs!

  12. Kyalo Mũsyĩmi says:

    Hahaha 😂 copied from Twitter;

“Todd Boehly tried to hijack the Jorginho to Arsenal deal before realizing he was a Chelsea player..”

  13. Obi says:

Jorginho though is not my preference is a solid signing. He’s one of the best “midfield managers”, around, and would be a cooler head on a young team trying to win the EPL when the pressure starts to boil over. Elneny did that and Jorginho would do that and perhaps better. Xhaka doesn’t do that, still a red card waiting to happen, Partey and Ode have not proven they can do that; but Jorginho is a CL and Euro winner. He’s a good insurance policy. I don’t like him as a player, but does his job well. He’s perhaps one of the most technically dirtiest player in the EPL.

  14. Cicero says:

We have to trust that Jorginho will quickly settle into the squad, and earn his place in the tight camaraderie that is so vital to the success of the team.

As Obi has said, not everybody’s first choice but a solid, experienced player.

  15. Obi says:

Very interesting stats comparing Jorginho and Caicedo, per 90 minutes this season (BBC Sports). I must say, I didn’t expect this. Shocked, I thought Caicedo will blow the 31 y.o. away.

    Jorginho Caicedo
    Successful Passes: 52.6 52.7
    Tackles 3 2.9
    Interceptions 1.5 1.5
    Passes final 3rd 20.4 14.7
    Forward Passes 20 14.5

  16. Aussie Geoff says:

    Morning Rico and all.
After hearing Arteta say the club knows what / who he wants and that he wanted deals done early, I was looking forwards to the transfer window, now the window has shut, I am not really jumping for joy. hopefully when I see the players under Arteta things will change.

  17. Cicero says:

The greatest example of the failure of multitasking in men was ex US President Gerald Ford, of whom it was said that “he couldn’t walk and fart at the same time”.
