Could Summer talks see January signings?

I don’t want to go on about the January transfer window, crikey, the summer one has only just closed but during the last few months, three players at least have suggested that Arsenal were interested in signing them.

First up is Cheikhou Kouyate, the Senegalese defender who plays for Anderlecht.

He maintains that had his clubs fans not pleaded with him to stay and Anderlecht had not qualified for the Champions League, he could very well be in England now, wearing the red and white of Arsenal.

The fans of Anderlecht asked me to stay for the club and they showed me their appreciation.

Qualifying for the Champions League was also very important for me, because without that I think I should have been in London where I had a good contact with Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.

Second up is Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, his claim is that he snubbed a summer approach from Arsenal because he wanted to move to AC Milan.

The defender was reported to have been the subject of a €6million (£4.75m) bid from Italian giants Milan and he had set his heart on a move to Italy. Any move to Italy was blocked by long-standing Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin despite an apparent agreement that he could leave.

The chairman told me I have an agreement to leave. AC Milan came for me. But the chairman refused the offer. So I understood it would be difficult.

Arsenal came to make an attempt. But I was focused on something else. I was disappointed when I understood it could not be sorted out with Milan. The chairman is our boss, our godfather, the one who educated us and gave us an opportunity. We have to show respect.

Then of course, there is Kevin Mirallas who allegedly snubbed us in favour of joining Everton:

Discussions were at quite an advanced stage with Arsenal.

But I think I had a possibility of playing in more games, for longer periods, with Everton.

If, and it is a huge IF all that has been said by the above players then it would suggest that Arsene Wenger really wanted to sign a defender and a striker and there is nothing to suggest that come January, he may still want to.

I admire all three players actually, Mirallas put football and his own playing time above a move to a club with Champions League and probably a better wage.

Kouyate listened to his clubs fans and vowed to stay and help Anderlecht in their own Champions League campaign and Yanga-Mbiwa, well he has his eyes on one club only and didn’t even entertain departing once his club said no to their offer.

As for the defensive midfielder so many cry out for, I suspect fitness and performances over the next four months will determine that outcome….

Finally, match one of the World Cup and ACON qualifiers are out the way and as far as I can see, there are no injuries to report.

A few very good performances and goals from a number of our players and all limbs remain in tact.

Gervinho was outstanding last night for the Cote d’ Ivoire in their 4 – 2 victory over Senegal. He notched up one assist, scored one and saw another disallowed. His International duty is now done and he’s on his way back to Arsenal fit and healthy and on fire by the sounds of it.

One more on Tuesday for a few others and then it’s back to prepare for the arrival of Premier League new boys Southampton…

That’s it for today, have a good one….

  1. TT says:

I seriously doubt we made an offer for any of these players. And if we did and they turned us down one has to question their ambition. To play in corruption riddled Italian football, small Belgian club or at Everton (no disrespect) instead of The Arsenal is, at best, naive.

  2. rico says:

    Morning all….

TT – I see it differently to you, especially Mirallas, he put his career first and playing time, look at some of the players we have had who are just happy to be part of the squad and take a huge salary for doing nothing…

    Chamakh springs to mind 😉

  3. TT says:

And what is there to say that he would have gotten less time at Arsenal? It depends on what you deliver and if he makes assists and scores goals I can’t see him being overlooked. If Chamahk was still doing that he would still be playing, simple as that. To me the player has simply taken the easier way nothing more.

  4. rico says:

Arsene Wenger says Johan Djourou is still part of his plans at Arsenal after the defender was linked with a summer move away from the club.

Djourou started only 14 games in the Premier League last season and he has yet to feature in the opening three matches of the current campaign.

Reports claimed that the Switzerland international was looking to secure a move to Italy in search of regular football and he was linked with a switch to Napoli.

However, nothing materialised before the close of the transfer window and Wenger is happy that the 25-year-old is still at Emirates Stadium.

“I didn’t let Djourou leave as I love him as a player, and he loves the club,” the Arsenal boss is quoted in The Sun Sunday.

Djourou has made over 140 appearances during his Arsenal career and faces competition from Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny for a centre-half spot.

    Morning Rico.
    Interesting post.
Seems as if Arsenal were busy in the market during the summer, alas, with no posirive results late on.
I tend to feel that a deal is virtually dead when the target player starts yapping about it.
Almost as if the player is trying to revive Arsenal’s interest.
Wenger will have his January targets.
I notice that Capoue and M’Vila have said nothing…..
    Hmmm. 😉

  6. rico says:

    Morning Ak,

My mind wandered when writing this, and thought no so much about the players but the positions.

Did AW really hope to sign a defender, hence him letting Bartley go but did the inabilty to rid Squilli stop that?

Then the strikers, was he really looking to sign another, but again, the inability to get rid of Chamakh and Arshavin prevent that.

So adding 2+2 and getting 10, both Squlli and AA will go in Jan and we replace them …

    Simples….

  7. hakzah says:

    morning Rico & all
bon jour kev…….how goes it mon ami ?

i think we were in for some players and for some reasons didn’t
materilaise …. next Jan we WILL see 1-2 players coming in.
and to be fair for the 3 aforementioned players, their reasons are viable and they can only be respected for that, many other players would have jumped ships ,as we know some did (dutchie et al )!!

    ..

  8. allezkev says:

Bon jour Hakzah, how are things down in Toulouse?
In London it is another sunny, cloudless day.
And I wish I was in the garden like Rico, but i’m working ami.
You will get on well with devilgunner he knows the lingo, speaks 4 or 5 languages.

  9. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico — Interesting article. As most of this transpired without much, if any, public attention; I would tend to give them some credence. Arsenal prefer to operate in privacy and public silence when it comes to transfer negotiations. There seems little to be gained by the players talking about their possible transfers to Arsenal. Mirallas’ statement seems rather matter of fact and plausible. If he was trying to curry favour with the Everton fans, I’m sure he could have done better.

Of the three I’d be more interested in us signing Yanga-Mbiwa.

  10. allezkev says:

    Morning Canuck.
Think we might have missed out on Miralles.
Maybe not being able to move on Bendtner and Chamakh affected any deal?
Raining in Ireland, ugh, it’s on it’s way here then.
    Lata

  11. Canadian Gooner says:

It would be great if we definitely confirm these stories true or false. So many of our fans were angry with Arsene and the club for “lying to them again” about player acquisitions and whining about how they felt betrayed and that the club should be honest with the fans.
It’s a bit naive of some fans to expect the club to detail their signing targets and negotiating strtegies just so they could feel comfortable with what the club were planning. I’m sure all our serious opposition clubs would also appreciate that candor. It would make it easier for them to nip in and gazump us.

Unfortunately, many of our fans read too much into the statements of Arsene and the club. Buying players is a lot more involved than shopping at Tescos. As can be seen from Rico’s article, it is NOT always about transfer price and/or wages.

  12. Canadian Gooner says:

AK — You may be right about Mirallas. We’ll just have to wait and see how he makes out at Everton as season progresses.

I am not so sure that signing a striker was dependent on selling Bendtner and Chamakh. Bendtner had made it plain, to all who would listen, that he wanted a transfer. So, it was likely he would go. The most likely targets of Mirallas and Niang are both young strikers with potential. Another Arsene youth project, not experienced players with high price tags and wage demands. A back-up striker who would give us a bit more depth and be eased into the team.

  13. agirlagunner says:

Quiet old day!! rico, it’s quite some talent finding something to write about even on interlull. These games are sooooo tedious.

That is a good article, CG. Cesc looks lost. His body language is all wrong. I think he keeps telling himself (and the world) that he’s happy because if he stops, he’d have to contend with his misery. But then again, Xavi isn’t getting any younger, so Cesc will make that position his soon enough.

I can’t say I am not enjoying seeing him suffer though. Not to be uncharitable, but… he made his bed, and he can die in it. 😀

  14. Canadian Gooner says:

AGAG — I can understand your point of view. I just wonder what Cesc now thinks of all those ‘friends’ on the Spain and Farcelona teams that encouraged/goaded him into making the switch. It’s a fine welcome home and he’ll probably have to endure it for at least another year.

This is just one more example of the grass not always being greener that other greedy &/or naive players will ignore in their blind quest for fame and fortune.

  15. allezkev says:

CG, that was an interesting piece on Cesc.
Not sure that he’d return so soon after angling for a move.
Maybe in 2 or 3 years time, but maybe not even then?
Anyway we have Cazorla, could Cesc do any better than our little genius?
BS-alona are full of massive egos.
    Maybe he realises that now.
And i’m sure that he is still in constant contact with Wenger, who no doubt reminds him of his carefree days in London. 😉

  16. allezkev says:

Btw, anyone heard how Joel Campbell is doing?
That seems to have gone very quiet.

Looking forward to the League Cup game vs Coventry.
The squad for that match is gonna be a combination of Squad players, reserves and fast-tracked youths.
A glimpse at a future star or two?

  17. Canadian Gooner says:

AK — To be honest, I don’t see Cesc returning to us at all. After what he did to get his dream move ‘home’, I can’t see him swallowing his pride to return to what should have been his home. It would be a terrible loss of face. Pride cometh before a fall. Now that he has lost it, I’m sure he now has a true appreciation of what he had at Arsenal.

  18. hakzah says:

salut CG ..comment ça va ?
FARCElona ha ha …. brilliant……would Cesc be that special talent
AW was talking about…hmmm ..will be some re-signing though ,he is clearly unhappy ,funny enough Song is ahead of him atm !!

Miralles might be some player in the making…more am disappointed with letting go of C.Vela….with Theo sulking and underperforming,Vela could’ve been good option on the right side or deputising up front. we have the option to buy him back for 5.5mil
if he does well(future),AW rates him highly .
so we might see striker /winger coming next Jan..

  19. allezkev says:

Tbh CG, I tend to agree with you on Cesc.
It’s a great thought, Cesc returning home, but as you say, his pride could prove the biggest obsticle.
Maybe when he’s in his late 20’s early 30’s he may fancy treading the path made by Sol Campbell & TH14.
    Lata

  20. Canadian Gooner says:

hakzah — Ça va bien mon ami.

Carlos Vela is an undelivered promise who may yet come good. As for Theo, I think he is beginning to realise that he is no longer the Golden Boy. A real dose of reality that could be the making or breaking of him. It’s up to him. If he puts in the effort he may fulfill his initial promise.

I think it is very likely that we will acquire one or nore players in January.

  21. hakzah says:

kev – J,Campbell has only one second half sub-appearance in Betis’s second match ..might be still early for the young man
but i would have prefered him loaned out to a championship team ,so he can get used to the style of Eng/play , he is some talent..he does very well for his country already.

loaning Ryo for a full season is too long i think, maybe just till next
Jan so we can recall him if we need to. the boy can do a good job on the right side .

  22. Canadian Gooner says:

Well the birds are beginning to rouse, dawn can’t be far off. It’s time for me to catch some sleep. Till later my fellow Gooners. Have a good day.

  23. hakzah says:

CG – Theo situation is very murky indeed, and the sooner is sorted out ,is the better….he hasn’t turned up yet fully focused and enjoying playing football
like he should,he was appaling for England too….the young man looks clearly up in the air..and i think the longer it goes on like this is the worst for him in the first place..

  24. Adam says:

I sense that the Cesc situation will provide an unending pile of steaming manure from which the foolish can draw fuel for their inane ramblings and “insights”. Mmmmm, smell that? I believe it has started already.

  25. Adam says:

You know Rico, I was gonna say I am surprised at some of the silliness I have read today, but I am not really. Cesc is a fantastic footballer and I think he would be in contention for a first team place every time if he is fully fit. Anybody trying to make a point because he is having a tough time needs to take a look at themselves. I think it would be fantastic if he came back. And he can play second striker too. 🙂

  26. rico says:

I’d welcome him back today Adam, if only to be able to quickly sell my shirt signed by him 😉

Maybe he could play on the left?

  27. eastsidepaul says:

I would love to see Cesc back at Arsenal, but can not see it happening.
More worrying are Coq’s comments about a possible move if he can’t get game time at Arsenal. He is one player we should be holding on to, I couldn’t understand why he didn’t come on instead of Ramsey last weekend, he is twice the player that Ramsey is.

  28. rico says:

    Hi emma – nice goal…

You can have the ones here Adam, don’t like them..

Hi esp – the press are loving the Coquelin story, but he did say he wants to stay but when is going to get a chance?

CO Cup no doubt next week but unless we get an injury, can’t see AW changing things too much…

Kine of agree re Ramsey, maybe AW thought his GB appearances have served him well….

  29. hakzah says:

Adam – nothing silly about speculating about Cesc’s situation,
very unusual and unlike him to come out and say what he said , ex ( i will go if the manager tell me to) shows how unhappy the man is.
we were wondering how Song will fit in Barca ,but he is ahead of Cesc at the moment in the pecking order , should’ve seen Cesc’s face sitting on the bench in the second leg of sup/cup and seeing Song sent in ahead of him while Barca trailing 2/1 down !!

  30. hakzah says:

speculation that’s what everybody does on these kind of forum
we are not highly paid pundits nor journalist by profession…
if people dont agree of others opinions ,that’s fine.but there is no need to be rude

  31. rico says:

Hi hak, do you believe that cesc himself made all those comments, or perhaps a little twisting by the media has taken place?

Very emma, he was made to look very fast on that clip, something suggests the fast forward button was on 😉

  32. Adam says:

That’s what I can’t work out Rico. Am I accused of being rude or was it just a general point that people shouldn’t be rude? Which is one I agree with incidentally.

  33. allezkev says:

    Canuck, sleep well mate.
Hakzah, personally I would not have had a problem with Campbell staying in Le Championat or joining a club in the Eredivisie.
Spain seems to spell the end for our loanees.
    They all disappear without trace.
    Gotta catch up.

  34. allezkev says:

Chill Hakzah, we’re just debating mon ami.
Adam is forthright, and mostly very right.
I do kinda agree with him, but it’s just speculation as you say, all good knockabout stuff.

  35. stevepalmer1 says:

Afternoon all, nice one Rico, lining up to join us eh, they will be by Christmas. Cesc Fabregas coming back not a hope in hell, he wanted trophies and he wanted to go home he got trophies and he’s home what more could he want, first team starts maybe but not with us we have moved on from Fabregas days we have a new Captain and he seems very happy at the moment. Cesc will have to work that much harder if he wants to face us in the Champions league his form has dipped maybe he’s on the way out, but were on the way in.

  36. allezkev says:

Adam, I trust that you are fully recovered and working on some magazine articles?

So the weather has changed out West then Rico.
    Coming this way soon.
There goes my plans to finish felting the garage next week. 🙁

  37. rico says:

    Hi AK, Steve

I’d rather Campbell had stayed in the PL or Championship…

Nice positive one there Steve 😉

I suspect the only one gearing up for a jan move to us is Henry …:)

  38. allezkev says:

Just heard on the radio that Coventry currantly don’t have a manager, and things are not good up there.
Lets hope nothing changes for two weeks, so we can take advantage on the 26th.

  39. allezkev says:

    Hi Stevo.
Just had a delicious piece of carrot cake with my tea.
Suitably refreshed, I return to the fray.
    See ya lata.

  40. stevepalmer1 says:

When we have signed old players we are normally in the shite, to be quite honest i can’t see that happening. Wenger has said that when he brings somebody in it will be to improve us, an out of form missfirering Cesc does not fit the bill.

  41. NashuaGunners says:

    Good Morning Rico and All

@SteveP, how about second chance for the young Man? maybe he learned his lesson and somehow he’ll appreciate Arsenal, that turned him to world class player, even more.

  42. Adam says:

Hi Kev. Yes, thank you mate. Back in the harness, so to speak. A few articles on the boiler plus that factory tour I mentioned to you and now an invite to China to eat fried jellyfish and give a talk.

  43. rico says:

Ak, yes it has changed, there’s a nip in the air now 🙁

Hi Ng – AW seldom goes back, only Henry, Campbell and Jens if my memory serves me right, and i suspect Henry has got something to do with him becoming part of Arsenals future…

If Cesc comes back then great, if he stays in Spain, we lose nothing either…

  44. devilgunner says:

    Good Afternoon Fine Gunners.

    Hope you all are ok.

Nice article Rico. I just feel that you can add Cesc on loan for the remainder of the season from January onwards.

  45. rico says:

Good afternoon devil, how are you?

That’s interesting, you were certainly spot on about the dutchman, i wonder if youwill be right about cesc…

  46. stevepalmer1 says:

Sorry Nash was watching the tele, I hold no hard feelings towards Cesc he was and probably still is a very fine player but he wanted the move and on his first obstacle we come into the reckoning, we have Santi and i feel we have a lot of midfielders, we have started our rebuilding and Cesc is not part of it, bring him back and someone has to give, not on in my book.

  47. Will says:

    Cesc made his bed…

As for January signings, I will wait to see where we are when the window opens. I do suspect we will need one more top class striker but that apart, I think we are pretty set and I am very proud that our squad actually has players from the youth team in it.

  48. Joaquim Moreira says:

Fellainni said 5 years in Everton that’s enought and would like to have a move next season or even, in January…

  49. devilgunner says:

I feel that if by january Cesc sees that he should have played more, than he may ask for a loan till the end of the season. Regarding where he will play or who will have to make way there are many varieties which can see Cesc fit into the side. He can play in the advanced role with Cazorla on the right and Podolski on the left (esp if Theo goes in Jan). He can alternate with Diaby and Arteta when either of these two may be injured or needs a breather. He can also give AW the option of the false number 9 he did with spain.

Personally I like him as a player but do not do so much as a person after what he did in his last season.

But……..and this is important if. what happens if he comes in at the expense of Arteta or a fully fit Diaby?? would AW forgive him for what he did? how would other players feel?

Many questions which cannot be easily answered.

But I think there might be a twist in the tale yet.

Regarding the dutchman I was right but regarding Song I was caught unawares……….although I am glad he left.

  50. stevepalmer1 says:

Well said Will, JM are you an admirer of Felaini a lot of housers have spoken about him, I watched him play the other day and was impressed with his skill and his workrate he could fit in well

  51. stevepalmer1 says:

I can see what your saying Devil but i feel we would have to lose somebody. Jack will be back in a blink of an eye i don’t think we actually need Cesc although i appreciate his talent

  52. rico says:

We have no choice but to wait Will, the post is about the positions we are reported to be interested in finding cover.

And I do suspect that we need more than just a striker….

  53. devilgunner says:

    rico says:

We have no choice but to wait Will, the post is about the positions we are reported to be interested in finding cover.

And I do suspect that we need more than just a striker….

……..and that is why I feel that Cesc might come.

  54. emma says:

    Cesc, cesc, cesc

I wouldn’t want him near my Arsenal. In his last season he became a sorry a**. Pulling up hamstring every 3 wks. Be on the treatment table for 2wks, missed out in 13 league matches, throwing tantrums by refusing to play during pre-season. He has moved on and so is Arsenal and the train aint stopping. What we actually need is a backup striker not a Cesc

  55. emma says:

rico – I would love to see coquelin in the DM role as well as jenks on the RB. I think both can step up into this respective positions. The good thing about our Arsenal is there are competition for positions which is good to see. Whoever puts on the shirt will want to give his best not wanting to sit on the bench the following wk which hasn’t happened in seasons gone by. I doubt if Wenger will be looking to bring in DM or Defender bar injury.

  56. stevepalmer1 says:

Nash we did indeed, and i apreciate what your saying but we are not a benevolent society. we all walk the path of life Christ i’ve made loads of mistakes who hasn’t but would it help or hinder when Cesc was with us he was the highest earner and captain how would that work.

  57. NashuaGunner says:

@Stevep, as davil suggested we can take him on loan if the option is available. With this option, we have to determain the terms in the agreement. For me personally, I believe in second chance.imho. Tr7 is a good player but his injury record worries me.

  58. devilgunner says:

Regarding Song I was caught by surprise, but I can safely say that the next one out is Sagna. He will go for 14million. There are many reasons……..his age, his wage demands, his contract situation and two leg breaks. plus Jenkinson is slowly growing in his role. With Coquelin able to play as a defender anywhere at the back plus a DM role Sagna already knows that he is a high profile player who can fetch a lot of money. and maybe the club has already told him that he will be sold…….like they did with RVP and Song.

  59. Adam says:

Well, thank you Steve. I am just getting going again on the old word processor and pretty soon the generally insulting tone of my posts will begin to flow with the same old gusto. I hope, or perhaps I am getting soft under Rico’s influence these days.

  60. devilgunner says:

I missed you all too Adam. However I was fortunate to live in a remote village in the Alps where I was practically away from internet, football and work. And being all the time in contact with nature allowed me all the time to reflect and think. Yes I did miss you all but mentally I feel more at ease. I had time enough to think about certain decision I had to take regarding my future in both football and work. And it allowed me to spend nearly a month all the the time with my family….something which I really needed.

I did see the games on TV and once or twice I did pop into an internet cafe to check on NN and HH plus send a couple of emails to my old mate Sir AK. But I stuck to my decision…..football to a bare minimum (just watch the 3 games), no mention of work, plus enjoy all the time with the family. And I did get to see a FC Sud tirol playing a friendly. But there where moments which I spent alone reflecting and thinking. And it does help.

The most things I missed from HH???? The leg pulling and friendly banter between us all.

  61. rico says:

emma – i too would prefer both you mention and if Jenks carries on the way he has started then he really could make Rb his own but I want to see him against a few more attacking, quicker sides first and see how he copes…

I honestly don’t wee how/when Coq will get his chance this season unless injury hits us… and if he really is becoming impatient then i strongly suspect he could go…

  62. devilgunner says:

He will grow into the role Rico. He is a bit suspect at the moment since he is still young and he will make mistakes. however I think that he will become like Dixon in a few months time. He is lucky that he has SB as his coach. And even Gibbs will benefit more.

We might also see Coquelin as a ball playing CB. Watch this space.

  63. rico says:

I’d be sad to se ehim go devil, IF he does, but if he can’t be patient or wants to move then so be it…. But, I don’t think he will, he’d have been gone before now imho…

  64. devilgunner says:

I feel that he will be playing a lot…..both at RB and at LB. Both Santos and Sagna are getting older, and are of the old team. BS did state he is the remaining remnant of the old 07/08 team. However in just three seasons AW has dismantled that team in the same ruthless manner that he dismantled the invincibles. This is his fourth AFC team. His first was the one he inherited then the 2nd was the invincibles, the third was the 07/08 team and the present one is the 4th.

  65. devilgunner says:

Yes Rico, and the best thing is that each player on the pitch will give his all. Mannone, Gibbs, Jenks, Arteta, Diaby, Podolski, Gervinho, have all got to prove doubters wrong. The only doubt I have about is about two players……….Sagna and Theo. I feel they be the next two to leave.

  66. rico says:

I think Theo will stay devil, but Sagna, as you say, age, fitness etc etc, he could be next on the list to leave, together with Arshavin and Chamakh…….

And, there is something that niggles away about Frimpong too….

But, I totally get why you suggest Theo, he’s hardly doing himself any favours is he….

  67. devilgunner says:

The Ox and Podolski and Gervinho are doing well to cement their places in the team……….and let’s face it, they have more tactical brains than Theo will ever have. Theo has speed but not that much cunning.

  68. rico says:

There is another niggle in me devil, somewhere inside that brain of Theo I think is a footballer, but there is something about they way we play him inhibits that….

Not for one minute am I suggesting I am right but i truly fear we will see that one day when he moves to another club…

  69. devilgunner says:

Theo is a throwback to the old days of direct football, which used to rely on speed and strength. He will flourish at clubs which play with a lone forward or clubs which rely on speed. He does not fit in with teams who play a passing game even though it may be direct. He does not know how to hold the ball and play possession football which can tire the opposition.

  70. rico says:

Oh well, as much as I’d love to stay up for longer, I really need to check out for the night…

Wish you a good night devil, sleep well…

Ak will be here soon 😉

    Night devil and all…..

    ‘Til tomorrow…
