Could Carl Jenkinson solve our midfield crisis?

Morning all.

Around this time last season, injuries started to hit us hard. Yes I know, a shock eh! By the time January came around we barely had a midfielder fit and that’s when Arsene Wenger took a big gamble . He recalled Francis Coquelin who was on loan at Charlton and threw him straight into the first team. We all know how well that gamble has paid off.

Now it’s looking highly likely that the Frenchman will be ruled out for up to three months, if not longer, leaving Arsene Wenger with very few options for the central midfield position.

Whilst sat scratching my head for ideas, thinking about who could replace him rather than Flamini, Calum Chambers popped into my mind as you know. Then suddenly this morning, someone else’s name instead came to mind.

Carl Jenkinson!

6′ 1″, strong, playing regularly at West Ham, he can tackle, he knows the players at Arsenal, he’s a good age now and he’s experienced in the league. I know he’s been playing right-back so would have to adapt but could he be better than Flamini?

Arsene Wenger likes to shift players around and he’s done  that so many times before when injuries have left the side threadbare. Debuchy and Monreal have both played centre-back despite not being the tallest. Aaron Ramsey has played right-wing, left-wing and I’m sure he’s even been spotted at right-back before now. Same with Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil over the last couple of seasons, they’ve al played in positions which aren’t their favoured so moving Jenkinson into the midfield might just work.

Arsene got lucky earlier this year with Francis Coquelin, he needs a bit of luck right now too….

Mad idea?? Ok, I’ll get my coat or my tin hat….

Have a good Monday, fingers crossed any news we hear about our French midfielder is good news….

Mind you Rico. We could have bought the best half dozen midfield players in the world and they could all be injured. Thankfully we have Shad Forsythe on our fitness team though.

  2. scottfromoz says:

Yeah what’s happened to our you beaut medical team……they seemed to be getting on top of things.
I know it’s been discussed, but has the club investigated why we get so many injuries?
It can’t simply be a lack of squad depth, because that wouldn’t have us in so much trouble so early in the season.

  3. potter says:

I suppose it depends on the contractual terms of the loan deal. If there is provision for a call back then why not , we need all the bodies we can get. I like Jenkinson and have never understood why we exiled him in favour of Chambers who seems a year or two behind him in development. Jenks is quicker , stronger and is one of our own , we got him for next to nothing and then paid way over the odds to Southampton for Chambers . Strange to say the least.

  4. Gdna says:

Good morning all, the best stop gap options for DM would be Nacho or Koss, but moving Nacho from LB and playing Gibbs is a huge problem. Time to spend big on Miralem Pjanic and a DM like Krychowiak. How long is Arsenal going to persist with JW and the all the others who are only good to take the club to top 4? The penalty taker from the weekend should also be dropped to bench, but where are the other options?

  5. Gdna says:

Most of the injuries are caused by overplaying, the squad is not good enough and the manager only trust 15 players. Whenever the manager supports competition for places in the starting 11 injuries will be less.

  6. rico says:

That’s in your opinion Gdna, some of us can see qualities in certain players, like Jenks…

I bet you hated seeing Coquelin do so well, being such a cheapie and all that…

  7. rico says:

It’s definitely a season long loan Mg, but surely there’s a clause in the agreement which allows us to bring him back in an emergency…

Not hat it would be fair on West Ham…

  8. malaga gooner says:

you would think we would have option to bring him back, but if you look at the cover we have at rb, even though i dont rate chambers and debuchy im not sure if wenger would of thought it was necessary . plus would west ham have agreed to this with carl being their 1st choice rb

  9. Lee says:

We are Arsenal FC, state of the art stadium, loads of cash generated every home game, state of the art training ground and loads of money in the bank…… talk of playing Jenkinson/Debuchy/Flamini or Bielik at DM is absolute bollocks, if Wenger did his job properly in the summer we wouldn’t be in this fucking predicament!!

Really bad decision making by him, yet again!!

  10. bradster says:

    Afternoon all,

I’d prefer Ramsey along side Cazola with clear instructions to be a team player like he did next to Arteta and not romp forward at every opportunity.
I’d also prefer Bielik/Hayden being his under study for 25-30 mins if the game is going our way.

  11. rico says:

It’s not how things ‘should’ be but when we are down to the bare bones, it’s about looking at options… We are seriously in the mire….

  12. Gdna says:

I don’t have to manage a PL club to use common sense. But anything to cover the manager faults are acceptable, I guess. With money available to invest in the playing staff and he failed to do it and the team is struggling because of no proper replacement to cover, the only solution to this should be to sack AW but the its a blinds man game.

  13. Lee says:

No mirrors in your house Arsene???

Arsène Wenger says Arsenal must “look at themselves” after their disappointing defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

The Gunners lost 2-1 at the Hawthorns, despite dominating possession, creating a number of chances and missing a late penalty.

Wenger says his side must examine what went wrong and learn from their mistakes.

“The result does not reflect the game but we have to look at ourselves,” he told Arsenal Player. “I think at 1-0 up we became a little too easy and the equaliser they scored sums it up well, they didn’t even need to have the ball.

“That is where we have to mature. In the second half we gave absolutely everything. We were unlucky and it was a bad day because we scored an own goal, missed a penalty and overall didn’t deserve to lose this game.

“We have to look at ourselves and think why did it happen to us? I believe we lost a fraction of focus when we were 1-0 up. It is frustrating, it is disappointing and what you want is to learn from a game you don’t deserve to lose.

“We had 72 per cent possession and if you lose it you have to look at yourself and think what happened to us.”

  14. andrewh1313 says:

I’m with you all the way, Lee. And yet I saw posters here yesterday being accused of being wise after the event (of injuries). Unbelievable. They should be made to read Transfer Deadlines days comments here before being allowed to post such nonsense.

  15. Gdna says:

“That is where we have to mature. In the second half we gave absolutely everything. We were unlucky and it was a bad day because we scored an own goal, missed a penalty and overall didn’t deserve to lose this game.” LOL

AW, your captain gave away a stupid free kick that result in the first goal, scored an own goal and your second vice captain kick the penalty in the stands. Arsenal deserve to loose because WB score 1 more goal than Arsenal do. Possession do not win games, Sir. lol.

  16. rico says:

Two men imo Lee, Wenger and Kroenke. The pair of them for allowing all this to carry on the way it has done for so long cheeses me off big time. It really does but until one, the other or both bugger off, nothing will change imo..

I hope that a large chunk of the £200m is waiting for a new man to come in and spend it. Kroenke allowing of course….

Either that or Wenger wakes up in January….

  17. bradster says:

well hopefully Ox is back soon too so that we don’t need to rely on Gibbs or Campbell on the flanks.
Other teams give their teenagers a chance, what about Adelaide, Hayden or Bielik filling in one or two games until a few come back.
Alli and Martial are only 19 years old each.

  18. malaga gooner says:

GDNA wenger should of been sacked over 5 years ago

if he was at a big club he would never been given so much time.

  19. Gdna says:

Brad, Most of Arsenal youngsters are not as good as fans have them to be, they are not ready to play in the first team, the only youngster at the club who might be able to help now is Gnabry. I remember saying a while back, that Arsenal problems is not numbers its quality.

  20. rico says:

I’m not a huge fan of Arteta but his tackle was fair, he got to the ball first and should never have had a free kick given against him…

Not that i’m hiding behind that excuse for us losing. Too many, including AW thought the game was won before kick-off imo…

Both manager and players need t wake up and realise no game is ever won until it’s won…

As for Santi’s penalty, rotten luck imo….

  21. Joaquim Moreira says:

rico, did you watch West Ham yesterday?
    Jenkinson on the second goal?
The DM is not a player only for defend but must build the attack. Most of the time, is the fist player take the ball from the GK and think the game.

  22. Gdna says:

Rico, I bet you saw MA tackle on the replay, 99.99 percent of the time that tackle by MA is a free kick. The referees don’t have replay to see that his studs barley touch the ball, plus to win the ball he went straight through the player and took his legs. That type of tackle is given weekly in the PL to the offensive player, its not anything new. MA have to go to ground most times because his legs are gone, that tackle was stupid. SC penalty rotten luck. lol. omg.

  23. Adam says:

I think you are a little hard on Kroenke Rico. How can a man who is trying to convince the world he has a luxuriant mop of youthful hair tell the great Arsene Wenger what to do? It might be different when Remi Garde or Steve Bould take over though.

  24. Gdna says:

Rico, Pulis said Gnabry is not good enough for WB and he is the best of the youngster’s at the club, make your own conclusion of the so called youth set up.

  25. rico says:

No Gdna, I watched live and saw it!

You can laugh all you like but how many footballers have slipped taking a penalty?? Plenty I’d say but of course, you like to think you are always right, well goodie for you!

  26. rico says:

Gdna, you just cited him as being one who might be able to help Arsenal out, I was merely saying that right now, he isn’t considered good enough for WBA, but you seem to think he’d be good for Arsenal…

    Doesn’t really add up….

  27. Gdna says:

The referee was in touching distance from where the tackle was made and could never see it but it was seen live on a television set without replay. smh

  28. rico says:

🙂 Adam, well that’s what a majority shareholder should be doing imo…

Do you reckon Garde is the next in then?

Alex Iwobi, Chris Willock, Julio Pleguezuelo, Donyell Malen and Jeff Reine-Adélaïde trained with the first-team.

    From JB’s website…

  29. Adam says:

I know Rico. But Wenger is a different animal really. A legend one might say. Garde? I doubt it, but that decision is going to be critical and might come at any time. There are so few candidates but I won’t mention Pep again as he hasn’t proved himself. 🙂

  30. rico says:

But who has allowed Wenger to become a ‘different animal’ Adam? Chicken and the egg really which is why I blame the both, oh, and the board…. The whole lot need shipping out and starting again…

Bit like some of the team really…. 😉

  31. Adam says:

Hi gdna. Rico. Wenger was a legend before Stan took over and I might even be convinced that he was one of the reasons he did buy the club. If the whole of the football world believes you need a couple of outfield players but you don’t bother to buy the anybody and add the required squad depth. If you make the same mistakes for a decade and completely refuse to address them to push the club to the next level, then I think it’s fair to say that you have a problem with stubbornness. The alternative view is that you are right and everybody else is wrong. There just has to be a compromise somewhere along the way.

  32. rico says:

Adam, i know but Kroenke has sat by and allowed him to carry on the way he has… If he knew an ounce about football, perhaps he too would have known we needed 2/3 outfield players and made sure his employee signed them..

Imo, it all went wrong the day Dein left, not because he left but because AW imo, took control from that very day and no-one replaced Dein. Until Gazidis came in but by then, it was all too late….

  33. Gdna says:

Lee, our stadium is nicer, but when we play there it doesn’t feel like home according to the boss, Leicester on the other hand do. lol

  34. Adam says:

Rico. I know your view on this and we won’t ever agree. When Dein was around it was a different landscape. From what I know Arsene is absolutely in charge and answers to no-one. For good or bad. A poor run is always challenging for everyone.

  35. tsgh says:

Good suggestion Rico…; Not a bad idea as he is atheletic enough. Not sure he has the skilset though..

I would rather move Chambers into that slot; bring Jenko back(not possible though due to agreement unless we pay WHU £1m+ back) or try out Hayden…

  36. potter says:

Wenger can now count 10 members of his first-team squad with injuries of varying severity.

Jack Wilshere will see a specialist on Thursday to learn whether he will require surgery on his damaged ankle ligaments – which would rule him out for three months – and Mesut Özil, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Mathieu Debuchy, Abou Diaby, Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina are also unavailable.

“The injury situation is a problem because we have many games and we lost two players tonight,” Wenger said. “The first one is Arteta, who again has a calf problem and that looks quite serious, and we lost Sanogo as well on a hamstring problem. Wilshere sees a specialist, finally and we’ll know more on Thursday night.”

    THE GUARDIAN November 27th 2014.

    Is there an echo ?

  37. tsgh says:

    ha ha ha Potter…

You mentioned King Abou’s name? He is now a research subject with OM’s medical team.

Tony Poo-list can f right off; he wanted Abou as well as Campbell and then he goes on to slate Serge Gnabry…

Interesting how all of a sudden Serge is deemed not good enough when even Klopp and Low wanted him just under 2 years ago…

  38. tsgh says:

Talking about Brazillians’, Sylvinho and Munchini are doing very well in Serie A…

They are now 2 points ahead; Pogba and his tricks are not working as well since Vidal left the Old Lady of Turin…; maybe its time AW waved £40m or so to Agnelli for Pogba. 😉

  39. rico says:

Oh, and HH is an Arsenal blog, but it’s one which allows all views on Arsenal regardless of what their thoughts are on Arsene Wenger!

But the one thing HH does is promote respect to every fans view…..

  40. rico says:

The odd thing for me about Wenger though is if he were to go into the Jan window with intent and signed a DM, and a goal scorer and then next summer replace the average with better, I’d be right behind him but sadly, I know that’s unlikely…

  41. Rick says:

    Afternoon Rico and the house
Its so cold down south I have got the Thermals out, still i expect it is the same where you are.
Rico it looks like some of the natives are restless and are giving you a hard time, me thinks you should send it the Rotties to calm them down.
I find myself agreeing with most of what has been posted and like most wondering how the old miser will get out of it.
For the game tomorrow I think he will play Rambo there.( Replacing Coq)
Are you aware the U19 game (Ko 2PM) tomorrow is being shown live on the player.
If you get the chance watch it and say what you think of some of our youngsters who are being wrongly written off.
Ginge I am with you on Serge Why is everyone slagging the lad off have they watched him play?

  42. rico says:

Afternoon Rick. There’s always a few eh, the Rotties will get them in the end.

I think he has no choice other than to play Ramsey there, unless he has something up his sleeve but I guess a lot depends on how serious he takes the game…

My comment about Gnabry wasn’t meant to knock the player by the way, it was more about other things…. I like him but haven’t seen him play for yonks…

  43. Martin Wengrow says:

It was only one game, but showed why WENGER allowed him to leave, even though it is only on loan. He’s a good lad with a great attitude, but IMO comes up short for the top level.

  44. potter says:

I thought that sending Gnabry to Pulis was a strange move as his style of football is hardly a mirror image of our own . Perhaps Wenger thought he needed to toughen up or perhaps he wanted his wage paid by another club, however like so many loans it does not appear to have been a great success. Once again an example of a player reaching the glass ceiling between youth and adult football.

  45. rico says:

I think a few of us us though the same potter, why Pulis?

My guess is AW thought it would turn out to be a rewarding as Wilshere going to Bolton….

  46. Martin Wengrow says:

I’m only guessing, but I have a feeling that WENGER might have been having problems with Gnabry in relation to his attitude. He has looked overweight for quite some time. Perhaps WENGER thought that spending time with Pulis might make him appreciate Arsenal a little more. Sometimes outstanding Young players, when they get great contracts, which he did, just take their foot off the pedal. Notwithstanding that he had been sidelined for a whole season with a bad injury. Yes another one ! Seems that even Nasri took the bug with him up north .

  47. Rick says:

Spot on Potter and that is why I am against the loan system.
A young player on loan is expected to change his style of play to suit his new club.
Then when he cannot or will not change he is written off.
What bugs me is so many critics can not see this.

  48. Rick says:

Rico I have just watched this mornings press interview.
I think Arsene was hinting that it will be Chambers playing in Coqs place. and Rambo on the right.
When I referred to critics I mean ex footballers who think they know it all not to you Rico.

  49. rico says:

Rick, if it’s Chambers, then perhaps that’s a smart move. Could be good, could be awful but we’ll never know until it happens. At least he once played there…

I thought you meant people on here being critical… Lol

  50. potter says:

    Rick
Did you see Afobe’s goal against Ipswich ,? a regulation header powered in from 4 yards and that’s the point not glanced in but net busting. Anderson 5 goals in 4 games , if we had a decent reserve league where they could play in a better standard than youth football , who knows how many cast off’s would have made it into the first team.

    London combination Potter?
A ex gunner died about a fortnight ago
He played in the 1950’s and it was stated he had played over 150 Res team games.
    Thats what we need now.

  52. Allan Michaud says:

Sorry but no way is Jenk’s going to be a revelation at DM and anyway I am certain we cannot cut his loan short, the agreement is one season. Chambers, maybe, but for me the kid often looks like a deer caught in the headlights and doesn’t inspire confidence IMO. However, given Wenger’s remarks this morning it looks like he will get a chance. We have to try something different because to continue with the failed experiment of Arteta or Flamini is madness.
Personally I would like to see Gnabry brought back and given a chance rather than persist with the likes of Campbell and Gibbs on the wings. He’s wasted at WBA and his pace and directness could be a breath of fresh air for us right now.
As for the CL this week, I hate to say it but I think if we are serious about a title challenge we have no choice but to treat it like the Carling Cup and play the kids. Our only well rested players right now are Gibbs, Ozil, Gabriel and Cech, although I would rather we rested Ozil too, just because we can’t afford to lose him right now. If we try to put out as strong a team as possible and still lose or draw it will be a huge knock to our collective confidence as well as being exhausting for our already knackered looking squad.

  53. tsgh says:

Re. Serge, almost 2 years ago i mentioned how I thought that Stuttgart’s persistence in Serge plus low’s call for Aw to play him even more so he could make the Krauts squad for Brazil, will backfire…

The young boy’s father apparently had conversations with AW to either play him or allow him to join BVB or Stuttgrart…

Fans forget Serge changed or contributed positively to a several games that he played in; one was the 2-0 at Crystal palace… one of the few times AW has convincingly beaten Pulis…; he won both penaltyies for MA08 to convert when they came on in the 2nd half

  54. Marshall says:

No, Jenko can’t sort our DM problem.
We all know if/when a new manager comes in, only guys like Ozil, Sanchez, cech, Monreal,Coq,Bellerin, Kos and Gabriel are safe. 50-50 on Ramsey the rest would be shipped away.

That’s how much average our squad is. The English core spends more time with the medics than on the pitch. You need not to be a scientist to see the liabilities in your squad especially if you’ve been managing them for two decades.

I think AW is used to failure and has gotten numb, he just doesn’t care.

  55. potter says:

The football combination/ metropolitan cup was where I started watching the Arsenal,My Dad worked Saturdays but midweek you got to see a good standard of football with players that were coming back from injury and trying to get into the first team and when they did they were match fit. I saw Eastham play as he came back from the Bremner / Collins assault . In those days you could not go to away matches and a midweek jaunt to Highbury was a good way to get your football fix.

  56. tsgh says:

Still dont understand or convinced why the general concensus is that we need a destroyer in the centre of the park when Fergie showed that you can win the UCL and the EPL with Fletcher and carrick in midfield when all 10 outfield players put in 100%.

Even Jose the brute won titles with Makelele 5’6 and frank lampard in CM during his first tenure…

  57. Joaquim Moreira says:

DM? Only Ramsey and Flamini can play now there for replace Coquelin.
However, with any of those chooses, we must change our way of playing.
    Isn’t time for Cabaye?

  58. Rick says:

I was discarded as being too small by both Sid Prosser and Dave Bassett..

As for tomorrow nite, I think we’ll batter them regardless of who plays in CM, it’s gonna all come down to the final game and that I’m not so confident about !

tsgh, didn’t Serge score for us in the CL around the same time as well, it’s all gone a bit pear shaped since then.

Marshall, you only have to look at Pep and Arsene in Munich to see which one still has a real zest for the game, Bayern 4 nil up, Pep running around his technical area demanding more from the players, Arsene sat in his seat like a constipated greyhound.

I suppose the extra three years make a difference but in effect we have both seen a lot of lows mixed in with the highs, from the Leeds match on the North Bank where pictures of the Beverley sisters got burned to the Wembley /Cardiff trips ,big Tone getting No 4 against Everton and Fairs cup , Euro CWC, Graham getting hung out for doing everything that all the other higher profile ones were doing . It’s been a roller coaster and it hasn’t stopped yet.
On another subject it looks like Wenger has ruffled a few feathers.

  66. scottfromoz says:

Micko, on your 10.29…..rightly or wrongly, Wengers theory is when things are going poorly, he remains calm as he believes carrying on will only do more harm than good to his players.
I don’t agree with him as sometimes players need a kick up the arse, but it’s not because he doesn’t care…..he’s never been one to really carry on.
    Morning all.

  67. Lee says:

Scott, these players have it too comfortable at Arsenal, a massive bollocking and or a kick up the arse can work wonders!

  68. kel says:

ts 9.43… its not a destroyer its more physical power and athleticism we need imo.
that doesn’t necessarily mean a big brute sitting in front of the defence lumping the ball up the pitch.

for me it means someone that can drive with the ball like yaya, pogba and to an extent sissoko. and someone that generally wins a 50/50 ball. it’s something Arsenal lack centrally imo.

  69. kel says:

just listened to wenger on the bbc saying he will do what is needed to be done in the January Transfer window regarding coquelin….
but January is not an ideal time to buy players. No shit Sherlock that’s why you buy them in the summer ffs.

  70. kel says:

true scott it’s a shame because we had a real fucking chance this year, they should be making contact now about players they might want to buy fuck this waiting until 1st jan. get the ground work moving now imo.

  71. scottfromoz says:

Kel, we are still a chance if, and yes, it’s a massive if, Wenger does some solid business.
Even if only due to the rest of the League being pretty average, we are still right there, so it’s not over.
We need to stay in touch until January.
Then, we need to hope any new players, if we do buy, can hit the ground running.
    If.
    If.
    If.
Could have all been sorted in the summer, and that goes without question.

  72. kel says:

thats the problem scott it’s staying in touch, these next 7 games are huge, if we get to jan in touch brilliant if we are 8 pts off fighting for 4th and in the europa league. questions will be asked im sure.

  73. Lee says:

Newsnow cracks me up… “Real Madrid boss Benitez backed by Luis Enrique, Mourinho and Wenger” maybe the latter two should concentrate on their own problems?!?!

    Well definitely Wenger fuck Mareenhoe…..

A lot of interest in The Golan heights ts 😉

It sure is rico, not sure about tonight I don’t really care tbh I think going out would be best considering we are down to the B team now lol

  76. rico says:

    Or go grey….

Kel, I’m not fussed either but I hope we win the match in style to get some confidence back. Then hopefully, Bayern will draw…

Obviously they were coached at the time by the Arsenal defensive team which seemingly has never learned but is always studying to eradicate such earlier faux-pas.
