Cesc Finally Leaves, Should Robin van Persie Stay???

As Captain of course ? 😉

As with all teams from time to time, Arsenal now need to pick their new captain. AFC.Com have confirmed that Cesc Fabregas will move to Barcelona as long as he passes his medical. Thank goodness this saga has come to an end and I wish him well.

We will naturally expect Robin Van Persie to be given the armband but how do clubs assess a captain?

In Arsene Wengers case it normally comes with seniority, the longest-serving player but is this the best way?

I’d like to run a few idea’s by you and see what you think….

When your on holiday to foreign places and you walk into a shop or bar to buy something how do you communicate with the shopkeeper?

Do you get out the phrase book, make sign language with your hands, or do you do what I do and look round the store and point at the  item you are interested in?

If you do any of these you would understand the difficulty that these shopkeepers have dealing with somebody that doesn’t speak his/her language.

So I think we should take that into consideration when appointing a captain and seeing how Premier League referee’s are English or British, I would suggest to Arsene that if a situation needs to be explained quickly, its best explained by an Englishman.

No disrespect intended for our foreign players but I have a foreign neighbour who speaks pigeon English and when he try’s to explain something to me I get bored pretty quick and I sense that when we play in Europe with foreign referee’s.

Captains racing to the referee and babbling to him in a foreign language will not help you at all, so in those games I suggest a temporary captain, a player that speaks the same language as the referee even a fellow countryman.

I think that with some of the decisions that we get it may make a difference.

Both Barton and Taylor of Newcastle proved my point by rushing to the referee and clearly stated that he had been punched/elbowed but they lied and Gervinho, who was only defending himself, got sent off.

A captain is normally awarded a pay rise for wearing the armband, maybe this is why Wenger goes with an experienced long serving player, but should this be the case? Surely if you pay somebody more money it causes friction within the team.

Nasri has made a point really, Cesc was out injured most of last season and still getting the paid the captains money, yet he was man of the match a few times and earning less.

Now he’s looking elsewhere for the salary he believes he should get.

I would take the armband for no payment what so ever but I’m a Gooner and being captain would be an honour for me! I’d expect the team to be told by the manager that I was the guvner on the pitch and stress to them that if they are not performing  there would be consequence’s, after all, a figurehead is no good at all if nobody takes any notice of him is it??

Does it matter where the captain plays?

I’ve always believed that a captain should be middle of the defence, looking ahead at all what is going on in the game, being involved with both defence and attack. A position where he can bark his orders to anybody on the pitch and be in a position to communicate with the referee when needed, something which is imperative  – somebody that realises that if one of his team has made a bad judgment he must accept his punishment.

I have never been a fan of players harassing the referee, it’s a trend that suggests more voices means more decisions.

I’d  prefer the captain to have a quiet word with the official, even with a bad official – shown respect, after all he is the man in charge of the game.

A bad decision against us can be looked into after the game and if Wenger feels we have been treated unjustly then go through the right channels to vent our case.

My advice to Arsene Wenger would be, don’t fall for the after match interview either, just say nothing then he can’t get into trouble!

Dissent in football holds no place in my opinion…

So a Captain that is fluent in all languages, a diplomat who has the respect of his team mates is needed but we may have to do it Wengers way of course ……

Who would be your Captain for this season, Robin or someone else???

    Morning all

Good post Steve, not sure i agree re the way Wenger appoints his captain, the last two have been emotional imho – both in attempt to keep players at the club…

I’m RvP will now stay as captain for the same reason….

  2. Savage says:

Morning to you. I like TV’s aggression, but I suspect he could get into trouble with hassling the refs. Honestly I haven’t seen RVP showing visible leadership, but it’s possible that he’s a lot more influential in the changing room. Like most Dutch, I suspect his English is really strong.

Let me add another ingredient for captaincy: inspirational moments.

When the chips are down, you look to the captain to provide the game-winning moments, like Henry, Vieira, Cesc. Can TV do that? Maybe. Can RVP do that? Most certainly.

Personally I’d go for TV as captain.

  3. Savage says:

For interesting point on TalkSport this morning…

Joey got a yellow card for hauling Gervinho up. It happened in the box and the ball was live at the time.

So it has to be a penalty.

  4. rico says:

I think we may get some news today, once Cesc has passed his medical and is confirmed a barca player, wenger will confirm a signing for us to deflate the departure…. 🙂

  5. Ajr says:

You do understand that rvp being dutch meant that he had to learn English at a very young age and like most Dutch people is fluent in the language. Therefore there would be no communication errors at all.

  6. rico says:

Kev pointed that out yesterday Savage…

Every man and his dog in the media say it was a pen when Gevinho went over, Poll says that Walton had a poor game and should have known better that to turn his back after he didn’t give the pen

questions are also being asked why Gervinho didn’t get booked for diving?? Had to be a penalty or a yellow- even a red card like van Bronkhorst got way back when Durkin (i think) sent him off against the dippers……..

  7. Philbet says:

In my experiance the Captain is simply the best, most respected player,in that catagory RvP qualifies,i would prefer s CB to be Captain but TV5 has to prove himself better than RvP for that.

  8. Mr islington says:

I think i’m going to have a nervous breakdown over this team.
Wtf is wenger playing at,he is playing with the fans soul’s and is mocking us publicly.

Do me a favour Arsene, stop talking about mental strength because we don’t have any. This team as it is now,has no chance of the winning the league.

Champions league tomorrow,No rvp & song.

Song three match ban for that wild stamp.(he will miss liverpool & utd). Gervinho three match ban.

When the ANC come’s around we will lose them anyway and the squad is bare thin as it is.

I’m sorry but everything wenger does right now is irritating me.

  9. goonster says:

Yes Rico and really low for a player of cesc calibre. Oh well I ll miss him though. Great memories especially the game at san siro and his 27 minutes cameo against villa……adios cesc fabregas soler. You always be an arsenal LEGEND to me.

  10. rico says:

Hi Plilbet, RvP should be given the armband becuase of the reasons you point out but i’d prefer it to be a defender…

Mr Is, we should have some money now, he has little excuse not to start building….

No Song, no RvP, this qualification is going to be tough, and we have no nasri….

  11. Paul says:

I don’t think RVP will be offered a new contract. Just a suspicion he’ll be allowed to leave next season. 29 years old and has never gone through a whole season fit and has never cracked 20 premier league goals. Don’t get me wrong, I love Robin, but I feel it’s time to find a striker that can do the business consistantly.

  12. rico says:

Sky Sports are loving reporting how many players we have sold for a massive profit….

    I’m not…….

I hope Stan and IG get off their butts today…… Wenger needs to be told to re-invest…

  13. Mr islington says:

Wenger then say’s we are not backing the players. What a f’ing cheek. We have always backed them because they wear the red and white mate.

What we don’t back is a board and manager that stands still and claims we are getting better and infact becoming worse. We are now a selling club i fear and we will not invest that money on proven talent, but we will buy some unknown on the cheap and another 17 yr old wonder talent that will be so good in 5 yrs time and we can only wait 🙁

  14. 队长饭饭 says:

in chinese,饭饭‘s Chinese pinyin=’fanfan‘,analogous to ‘vanvan’,so we call Robin van Persie by ’饭饭‘,haha~

  15. rico says:

    He was good goonster 😉

Be interesting to see whether he gets in the barca side though…. Also, how many injuries he has now…

  16. Mr islington says:

The reason it’s free is because no one’s paying for it.
Don’t you think it’s worrying when for the first time we are not selling out our games.

  17. myles says:

Does it really mata 😉 where the captain is? As long as he is influential, good choice already…. And I what team will come out against udinese?

  18. Savage says:

I do like the rebranding – the new player and the one-day pass just feel so much more accessible to me. The previous versions with having to log in were just tedious. Good job from the PR team on that one.

  19. rico says:

Morning Lee, I don’t think it will be that many, not this season 😉

Mr Is, I used to subscribe but if ever there was a waste of money, that was it….

  20. Merlin96 says:

Van Persie for Captain simply he is the msot senior player, love to play for Arsenal and in is last 2 years of his contract. He should be offer a long-term contract to end his career with Arsenal.

Van Persie is a slow starter and needs 4 to 5 games tog et into hsi stride and then bang in the goals regularly.
Plus he needs to adjeuc tto the demand of his new team-mates in Gervinho, Ramsey and Rosicky (new as in returning after 18 months injury layoff).

We should not end up like Gilberto or Kolo situation when the captaincy was awarded to Gallas.

Vermaelen is still a newbie and his time will come when Wenger rotates the squad.

I understand that Dutch school-kids must study 3 langauges with Dutch, German and English being favorite.

This time, please appoint a captian who loves to play for Arsenal and declared publicly that he will love to retire at Emirates.

Vermaelen, WIlshere or even Ramsey will just have to wait for their turn.

  21. realsocialdad says:

it’s got be verm or sanga

robin wont start have the games and when he does he should concentrate on scoring

  22. Osi says:

    hi all.

Mr.STeve Palmer, an English captain can only sort out problems in on this country’s pitches, therefore, the captaincy must be awarded to English man? What about the fairness to no English players who served this club honorably and deserved their captaincy? Do you really think that all foreigners are rubbish in English, big assumptions out there! I don’t get your point there? Communicating is an skill after all and some people can communicate better with less language skills. also RVP’s English is almost perfect for a foreigner. have not seen him talking to the media after match of the day?

If you get bored when foreigners, your neighbours, explain something to you then that’s rather your problem, but I am a foreigner I have no problem communicating my point of view, verbally and written, to my fellow English people. I feel offended. I found this whole talk about captaincy a bit xenophobic.

what on earth the BARca president is talking about? was the deal really that low; less than £30m? That’s a case of bullying if true!

  23. goonster says:

God dammit Lee we just sold fab and nasri is about to leave we should be after MATA…..hey wenger get off your ass and get us the required players….spend some fucking money!!!

  24. dutchgunner says:

have to point out that RVP and Vermaelen both speak perfectly fine english, if anyone has trouble understanding what they’re saying they probably have some kind of problem themself…

  25. Merlin96 says:

Nay, too mny smoke and mirror from Wenger such that we don’t really know who is his real target(s).

  26. Merlin96 says:

    Tuesdy night.
Sell-out crowd or Arsenal fans are starting to boycott home games to hit those suits and Stan where it hurts the most – their pockets?

  27. rico says:

Good points made there Merlin about RvP being captain..

We won’t get Mata, if wenger wanted him he would have signed when he was cheaper, now he’s too costly…

  28. rico says:

Morning Osi, didn’t see you sneak in 😉

Sorry if today’s post has offended you, I don’t think for one minute it was intended any overseas player or fan 🙁

  29. Osi says:

thanks Rico. I suggest the writer to apologises for this rather obvious generalisation. If one talks about one person in particular it’s ok, but making stereotypical generalisation about the English/communication abilities of foreigners is, for me, exactly what the author is trying to avoid ‘disrespect-fulness’.

  30. EastSidePaul says:

Morning everyone, well its finally over, and as per usual we end up like Marsellus Wallace in Zed’s basement. 27m initially? Could someone remind me how much Liverpool paid for Andy Carroll? How do we get so little for one of the best midfielders in the world with 4 years to still run on his contract? I mean if Barca can’t folk over the 40-50m he costs, i’m sure city or madrid would! And I have heard, though non-reliable sources! that Barca still owe Arsenal a lot of money over both the Helb and Henry transfers.

Does anyone think that Wenger will invest it back into the team? because I am not too sure. Can someone please enlighten me as to where all this money is going? I can’t figure out how we constantly heard about how rich the club is and how little we spend on transfers, yet every year we sell one of our biggest players off for a huge profit with the money never going back into the team!

As for captain, it has to be TV5. The guy is the only real leader in the team, the only reason RVP gets it is an attempt by Wenger to keep him at the club, as he did with Henry and Cesc, and in my opinion both awful captains, especially Fabregas.

  31. Osi says:

Rico back to football talk, do you believe that we were robbed by Barca? did we really accept a deal worth £29m as the president claimed; he was quoted saying that they refused to buy more than 30m euros?

I’d be really upset if that’s true.

  32. rico says:

    Morning ESP…

Reports are that the deal was £35 million, with add ons but not sure whether that is correct? As for the money, if it’s not re-ivested it will go in the afc bank to pay off more debt – which will not make our club stronger, nor will it please already fed up fans….

Whatever we get in sales this summer should be spent, after all, it’s been many seasons now since we really added quality to this squad…

  33. rico says:

    Osi,

the price i read was as my last comment, but, what angers me is reading that Barca have slapped a £130 Million get out clause in his contract….

  34. EastSidePaul says:

Just a note on our debt, which is all stadium debt right? When we took out this loan, like anyone else, we had a fix rate to pay over a fixed amount of time. Now this should have been a realistic pay back rate. So we take in large quantities of money (Which we do). But we have a fixed loan to pay.. where does the rest of that money go? I know we are not paying back the loan quicker than we should! That would mean penalty fees, and why would the club do that?!

  35. Osi says:

When heard I met that get out clause with disbelief, and if that’s true it shows how the Barca bad guys got away with murder and disrespect that much our club. But the worst for me is the late emeging gossip from respectful media (TEl, Guar, Ind) that Arsenal will get only 14.5m euros straight away with another 14.5m euros in October and then 1m for each of Cesc’s five years contract, and a further 6m euros and that’s. Has the world gone mad? Sir Cesc for that ridiculous laughable amount of money, and only after they ruined our summer and maybe season? I’m lost for words!

  36. Osi says:

Rico I don’t believe Arsenal carry/incurred any more debts? The stadium debt is serviceable in the long term and factored in the profit and loss statement.

  37. EastSidePaul says:

    – Osi

thats exactly what I think about the debt also, so where is all the money we have made selling our best players?!

    -Rico

I am personally a Gourcuff fan, I have watched him play since his days at Milan so I would recommend him! But thats not fair because I have seen very little of Mata play. But Gourcuff is 6’1″ while Mata is 5’7″…

  38. rico says:

Osi, i don’t think they should be saving what we make on player sales, not one bit – but you and we all know the way they work…

I’m hoping that Stan and IG ‘force’ wenger to make some good signings for the sake of the club in the next two weeks….

I’m the same re Mata ESP, haven’t seen him play but like you i think we need a bit of height in the side, we have too many tiddlers…

Gourcuff would be the cheaper option now wouldn’t he?? That’s Wengers thinking, not mine 😉

  39. Osi says:

ESP I think untill last season Arsenal balance sheet carried some unserviceable bad debt (the Highbury development project and whatever else was there) which is now completely paid off. But, you’re right about this year necessity to spend as we cleared all bad debt or not serviceable debt.

I don’t agree totally agree with you on Gourcuff as I think he isn’t as great as hyped. He has one skill that we need though: accurate crossing and aggressive shooting. He’ll definitely add something but I think Mata is really talented player and would be a great addition, and Edin Hazard, although still a baby as Evra may say, is the real deal for me.

  40. alex says:

Arsenal with Wenger in charge has become a selling club. Every year the club makes more money from transfers than it spends. And it’s not like they are selling Denilson’s and Diaby’s of the club, no, they sell Cesc’s of the club. Henry, Gilberto, Toure, Vieira, Hleb, Nasri and now Cesc were all key players. Think what Arsenal could have achieved with Hleb and Henry still at the club. Hleb’s career took a major downturn, yet he was a star at Arsenal. Henry would still be a top scorer, he showed he still have skills at the Emirates cup. Gilberto was far better and more diciplined than Song, even though he is now 34, he would be a good asset the last 3 years. Toure is a lot better than Koscielny, and together with Vermaelen they would have been the new defence rock in Europe. Adebayor was aslo sold right after he started banging in goals. And what’s next? Robin is going? Wilshere has become a pretty good asset. And now that Wilshere is getting attention, why not pimp him out for 20 mill?! While Ferguson bought more winners to an already title winning squad, Wenger sold 2 of his best players, replaved them by promoting 2 kids that in 2 years will warm a bench in the championship, and he even expects to do better this year. GOOD LUCK!!

  41. rico says:

39 million Euro is the price for Cesc

29 million in one lump sum now

    5 million paid by Cesc

1 million every season for the next five seasons……

  42. K-TR7 says:

I have to get this off my chest.cesc was a great player for us but not a legend.he was damn good and its such a shame that he never won more with us.however he has acted like a petulant child this summer.he refused to participate in preseason.this weakened our hand immeasurably in negotiations.he let his buddies belittle us all summer,he has even apparently paid part of the deal himself to leave.we have been ripped off as a result.if reports are to believed that we’ll only get €14.5 mil this month are true while they put a £130mil exit clause in your contract then you’re a disgrace you little sh*t.i would’ve wished cesc goodluck before but not now.i hope i never hear cesc speak about our club in any of his i/vs.he has screwed us and im sure arsene must be lost for words right now.goodbye cesc.gend.he was damn good and its such a shame that he never won more with us.however he has acted like a petulant child this summer.he refused to participate in preseason.this weakened our hand immeasurably in negotiations.he let his buddies belittle us all summer,he has even apparently paid part of the deal himself to leave.we have been ripped off as a result.if reports are to believed that we’ll only get €14.5 mil this month are true while they put a £130mil exit clause in your contract then you’re a disgrace you little sh*t.i would’ve wished cesc goodluck before but not now.i hope i never hear cesc speak about our club in any of his i/vs.he has screwed us and im sure arsene must be lost for words right now.goodbye cesc.

  43. Osi says:

Rico I respect your opinion but I have to disagree with you when you say:

“I’m hoping that Stan and IG ‘force’ wenger to make some good signings for the sake of the club in the next two weeks….”

Are you sure Wenger is the one reluctant to spend or is rather pragmatic with the little that’s available to him? I believe that Wenger is ambitious manager who likes to have the best players that enable the club to win something, but he’s also, unlike other managers, conscious about the rip off in the selling market and the financial situation of his club. If all he has is the amount we hear the media gossiping about which usually around 30m then I understand his reluctance to splash that; that amount can only get you a good GodFearing, hardtackling, or byoffside line hanging striker, English speaking. Refer to: Bent (24m; Crouch 16m plus salaries for at least 3 years contract.

  44. Osi says:

Rico, when is cesc going to pay his 5m? In one lump or when his pockets are fully satisfied with Barca bucks?

  45. Osi says:

k-tr7 I share your sentiments fully. I don’t wish our former captain a good luck. I’m really upset about the whole cesc affaire.

  46. EastSidePaul says:

So the guy pays 5m to leave a club that made him who he is today? There is gratitude for you…

Fabregas was never the same player when Flamini left, he needed someone beside him to do the dirty work.
I wonder how many games he will get a year? Couple spanish cup games, some non important league games.

What are the odds we get Barca in the champs league this year?

  47. rico says:

The first five is straight away according to GB, then €1 Million each season from his wages, whether that is monthly or annually i don’t know Osi

  48. K-TR7 says:

Cesc has soured everything i thought of him.he is probably ripping apart our club with his buddies.we have been ripped off and cesc played a big role in it.€40mil for a 24 year old captain,WC and Euro winner and maybe a future ballon d’or winner is a rip off.we should now cut off all ties with those bastards.it makes it even more sickening that we let them use our training ground in their preparation for the CL final :@

  49. realsocialdad says:

i know someone who is a shaktar fan and has watched him everyweek for 3 years he said ” Way below the standard of a arsenal player”

  50. Osi says:

If the reports of cesc paying 6m to go to barca or get away from Arsenal are true, then that show that barca’s been disrespectful to the player and to Arsenal. If they rate him so high that they put a get clause (£130)of that magnitude around his neck then why treat him like a bargain that they’re not that interested in.

  51. Osi says:

Will totally agree we were and still are far too nice sugary to others. The last time we had a good deal for a player was when we sold Overmars to them.

  52. realsocialdad says:

it’s that cesc pushed through the transfer so the clause in his contract is:
Loyalty bonus of £4 mil if he didnt ask for the move

he did so we didnt have to pay him that

  53. K-TR7 says:

I can understand cesc wanting to leave but how he has done it is absolutely sickening.when vieira left we gave him that chance.his development was given priority over us challenging for trophies.we changed our tried and tested system to suit him.all our players have been bought since then to compliment him.many of our players have suffered as a result.you were even our captain!we deserved more respect from you but you have spit on the hand that fed you.i hope i never see you at the Ems again, and if you do i’ll not give you the reception i gave the likes of henry and bobby.

  54. rico says:

I’m not a bitter as you guys about Cesc going home, he’s given us eight years, 6 or 7 of which he gave his all….

Now he is injury prone and he’s leaving, for the good of the club i am glad he’s gone….. I wish him luck because I happen to think he’ll need it….

Now lets sort out Nasri, then what is left and who gets added can get on and gel as a squad and play as a squad….

And which eleven plays at any one time, play with passion and comittment….

  55. Osi says:

Rico I think if we sell nasri around the figures talked about in the media then it’s a good business. He also, like Cesc, doesn’t want to hang around so it’s better we sell for that price £22, 23, or 24.

As far as his replacement is concerned I think we have a very good player in Gervinho plus Miyatchi and Arshavin. I don’t think we should be panicking about his replacement (external).

  56. Adam says:

Hi Rico. We are of course moving to a position, if Nasri goes, that we could have been in 2 months ago. Of course this would have meant that Arsene could not play so many games of brinkmanship with the press but the club would have been in better shape. Now he is going to have anything from £60 million and possibly upwards. Let’s not quibble over the amount. Who will he buy?

  57. Will says:

Forget the players who have gone, they are gone.

We need to focus on the players we have for Tuesday. This is going to bbe a tough game and I can’t see any signings to after we know what comp we are in.

  58. rico says:

Osi, personally I feel we should buy a CH, DM and a goal scorer with the money we have left, then any that is over get a couple of bargins on the final day 😉

Adam, i think wenger hoped to keep nasri but it’s looking like he’s going to citeh according to SS – 60 million is a lot of money in wenger world, he just needs to crack on and spend it….

  59. rico says:

It’s offical, medical passed and he’s gone, 5 year deal with a €200M get out clause…

    One down, four to go……

  60. Adam says:

Rico. I would have thought that the later you leave these transfers, especially of top players, the more difficult it is. Conventional thinking and certainly Wenger’s, seems to suggest that the price comes down. It is a dangerous game to play as the team has found out to it’s cost. Personally, I would be looking to offload Song for a more responsible, team- minded player too. But it won’t happen will it? He will cost us all season.

  61. goonster says:

RSD I beg to differ the jadson I watched looked classy…he might not be in the same league as cesc but from what I saw of him he can do a good job for us…..and besides I ll take him over nashit any day. He also takes a MEAN free kick.

  62. rico says:

Will, i said the same earlier, following wengers trait of emotional appointments…

Better not though otherwise i can see RvP asking to go….

  63. rico says:

    Me too Adam –

and re Song, he needs to shape up a wake up and cut out his stupid tackles…

Talking of which, has Eboue left??

  64. Will says:

Turkish side Galatasaray have confirmed via their official website that they’re in negotiations with Emmanuel Eboue over a possible transfer to the club.

That they’re speaking to the player suggests an agreement has been made between the two clubs. The Ivorian, who only signed a new Arsenal contract in late 2010, has been available for transfer this summer – with suspicions Wenger’s patience ran out after that calamitous penalty incident against Liverpool last season.

When youngster Carl Jenkinson was the prefered understudy to Bacary Sagna in pre-season, the writing was very much on the wall for his Arsenal career.

Eboue joined Arsenal in 2004 from Beveren and has made a total of 214 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals.

  65. goonster says:

I have a whole season clip of him and besides I saw him at the COPA recently……a very tricky player and he has a good shot on him and plays with both feet!

  66. Adam says:

Yes, apparently Eboue is appearing in Carry On Up The Casbah. The movie is being shot in Turkey after Arsenal agreed to pay Galataseray £2 million to take him away, a long way away. Negotiations are ongoing for Song and Squillaci.

  67. K-TR7 says:

Lee im serious.i think maybe arsene is trying to persuade nasri that he can now be the talisman of the team now cesc has left.maybe thats why nasri hasn’t left yet as he wanted to see what would happen with cesc first.

  68. goonster says:

He ll fit in nicely with jack and song…..he’s also not shy to tackle. Scores from a long range and very close. He’s more direct than nashit. Jadson will never slow down our counter attack……he’s a one touch footballer.

  69. EastSidePaul says:

    -goonster

Do you really believe either Song or Wilshere are good enough to be playing in Arsenals midfield?
And do you think that we should continue playing 4-5-1?

  70. goonster says:

Wilshere yes….song? Well, I have my reservations. He’s so slow and don’t track back fast when we lose the ball in the final third. We need a flamini type player.

  71. Lee says:

200m buy out clause? Come over and use our facilities when ever you want you classless piss taking fucks!

  72. EastSidePaul says:

Song in my opinion was never good enough to play for Arsenal, everything you said about him is true, his sense of position is awful, he is a poor tackler and isn’t tall enough for the position, after the couple minutes JD got in that position against Newcastle I would love to see him start there, watching him stride out of our box with the ball reminded me of Vieira, and by no means is that a bad thing.

And here is where I am different from every other Arsenal fan out there, I don’t think Wilshere is good enough to be in Arsenals midfield. I can’t for the life of me see what he brings to the team, I mean he is not a defensive midfielder, and his one goal and 3 assists last season are certainly not the stats for an attacking midfielder. Don’t get me wrong he has great potential, but potential is not what Arsenal need now. we have waited long enough on potential. I don’t think he is good enough for Arsenal to go back to a 4-4-2 formation, i think he needs two other midfielders beside him, which is detrimental to our attacking ability because now we only have 1 striker, which is RVP who is not an out and out striker, not a 30+ goal a year player. Plus he is not the experienced player we need in the centre of the field. I hear everyone talking about his grit and determination, but I saw none of that in the closing of the season when we folded as usual. Look he is a quality player with great feet, but can we please be honest and say that maybe, just maybe we all see him in a better light because he is English?

I think I may have just made myself the most unpopular poster here!

  73. goonster says:

Well ESP so did cesc…..wilshere is playing deep just like when cesc began his arsenal career…I saw jack a couple of times in the reserve league back in 08 he was arguably the best player in the reserves then…he’s learning his trade just like when wenger player cesc in his early years. When jack is finally unleashed you ll see what I mean. Cesc wasn’t a regular goal scorer until 08 when he came off age.

  74. Will says:

Manager Arsene Wenger believes Samir Nasri may stay at Arsenal despite expectations that the France midfielder will move to Manchester City.

Cesc Fabregas completed his switch to Barcelona on Monday, but Wenger insists Nasri, who has one year left on his contract, is far from certain to follow his former captain out of the Emirates.

“I want Samir to stay, hopefully we can sort the situation out,” said Wenger.

“His situation is not linked with Cesc’s departure.”

  75. EastSidePaul says:

Then lets have a player good enough to play along side him. Tired of having 3 players doing the job of 2.

  76. goonster says:

Tell that to wenger ESP…..jack is more advanced than cesc at the same age. Watch the home leg manure game you ll get what am saying

  77. goonster says:

You think kt? Wenger will never admit he made a mistake with the formation…he’s not gonna change any time soon.

  78. Savage says:

Song was one of the highlights from the Newcastle game for me. He just provides a calmness and stability in the midfield. The only thing that annoys me is he often *looks* for a physical scrap, by waiting for the player to come at him, rather than simply releasing it. Watch the Barton incident – Song gets it, then holds on for too long, so Barton comes from behind and effectively wins the scrap, causing Song to make a 3-match-ban error.

  79. goonster says:

Its just beyond belief…..we have a very important week coming up yet he sits on his hands and does nothing. In a week we face udinese liverfools and manure with a injury ravaged team. Not to mention the suspended players…God help us.

  80. Savage says:

Song is a decent quality player, but not world class. Right now our weakest position is the number 2 forward behind RVP, and of course there are question marks over left back.

One thing we should mention on Song is that his forward roaming runs have stopped, like we all requested. I remember Wenger saying it might be an option, but obviously he went back to Song and told him not to, as I don’t recall it happening for a long time.

    Benfica first half: Song
    Benfica second half: Frimpong
That for me sums up the difference he brings in calmness.

  81. Savage says:

Remember JD’s run through midfield against Newcastle and his rubbish pass to Theo. DM? Maybe, but not on that performance – compare it to Song’s superb pass for RVP.

  82. goonster says:

Don’t hate will….he did give us his very best..broke his leg in the process. Cesc is and ll always be my hero….I remember him scoring his first ever goal…so long cesc fabregas soler. My very own CULT HERO.

  83. goonster says:

Jd was about to fall when he passed that ball…he just stumbled past cabaye or was barshit….he ll do better than song in that role imho

  84. Savage says:

    My best Cesc moments:
    – the daisy cutter against AC Milan, awesome goal
    – the solo derby goal against Spurs
    – the game-changing freekick and 2nd goal against Villa
    – the winning penalty against Stoke after the Ramsey break
    – against Madrid when we finally knew he had replaced Vieira

He was never my favourite player, so I won’t miss him too much. Theo has been my favourite, but Gervinho is knocking hard on that door. I’m also really excited by Ryo.

At the end of the day, we bought Cesc cheap and we’re getting 35m-odd for him, so that’s a decent deal for us, and I’m looking forward to seeing his replacement. Bye Cesc, but no tears.

  85. Savage says:

Agreed on that Djourou run by the way – I gave him no credit for the actual dribbling he did.

I do think Wenger has a look at these options though. One thing we have to mention is that Song is a big boy, and we don’t have many of those. I can’t recall him losing a physical scrap in a while.

Imagine Song and Frimpong roving around the midfield together – ouch, watch out!

  86. goonster says:

Well savage he ranks high amongst the greatest gunners for me….he’s up there with denis “iceman” bergkamp…God bless him. I ll miss his defense splitting passes. He might not have won anything as a captain but that Goal against the spuds ll always linger in my memory….sayonara cesc. All the best.

  87. Savage says:

That’s not a bad team against Udinese. The main concerns are over Chamakh and the player for the advanced midfield role.

My personal concern is: who’s going to score the goals? There are several creators there, but who will take the initiative on the final shot?

  88. K-TR7 says:

Cesc is going to play with the likes of messi from now on.lets face it,he is going to be a serious ballon d’or contender pretty soon there.we can’t match that.spread your wings and fly but no tears from me cesc.

  89. goonster says:

Good riddance then savage…what can nashit offer that wasn’t visible on Saturday…..his importance is way overrated…….I ll lose sleep were we losing RVP or jack the lad….nasri out.

  90. Savage says:

Look, if he signed a new contract I’d be happy, but I do honestly think he slows our game down. I’d pick Gervinho over Nasri down the flanks easily.

As everyone rightly points out, Nasri was playing when our team collapsed. If he was that good, he’d have done something about it. His form didn’t suggest he was due a 170k per week pay packet.

  91. goonster says:

What were they singing ESP? Oh how I wish I was at st james park. My voice ll have drowned every other voice. I would have lost my voice though.

  92. Savage says:

I’m all for respect, but it was his decision to stand there, above the trap door, with the noose placed there by his own hands.

  93. oliver says:

morning all…either robin or tv are my choices for captains. i am disappointed that robin – as captain – did not get gervinho away from barton on saturday…he should have been first in between the players and the first to make sure that we had no repeat of the diaby situation…

if all things were equal – and i don’t think they are – i would choose tv ahead of robin, based on his experience captaining ajax and his acknowledged stature as leader of our defence. i think he also better situated to organize our team during match situations…but robin is the man (of the moment) and i have no problem with that…

i am glad the cesc situation is finally over…this has been ugly, unedifying, and has ended in a wholly unsatisfactory manner for arsenal, but at least it is done…i am not too bothered about his perfunctory remarks about the club and supporters – it is pretty evident he checked out before last season ended, and, frankly, that is how i will remember him…he got what he wanted, we got fleeced…

he’s no arsenal legend. he’s a super talented player who deserved better support than he got (and the man he praised so lavishly let him down on that account), and was given the captaincy before he was ready, but ultimately turned his back on the club and supporters to get his move…

cesc is finally yesterday’s news…we have a cl qualifier to win, and difficult league fixtures against liverpool and man united…no more time for the man who does not want to be here…

and, by the way, it is clear there is another man that does not want to be here. arsene claimed that he let our former number four go because he was not fully committed, yet he is now talking about keeping our number eight around when that particular player is not fully committed? this is an example – and not the first – of our manager making a rod for his own back with contradictory statments…

time to move number eight out as well…i don’t think we can move ahead with him hanging around the dressing room…i don’t think anyone can reasonbly deny he wants to leave – what is the point of keeping him? if we did not keep our former number four because he was not fully committed, then what is the logic of keeping our number eight?

  94. rico says:

Oh dear, poor old Nasri but, he’s right, he’s still an arsenal player 😉

What were the fans singing, Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’

    😛

  95. oliver says:

nas, you may still be an arsenal player in name, but i dare you to come out and publicly say you want to be here…

while i do not condone abuse of players – either ours or opposition – kindly explain to me why our club’s supporters should not feel cynical about you and your motives?

with that said, if our supporters aimed foul, abusive chants at you during the match at st james, i consider that out of order and wouldn’t do it myself…but i certainly won’t sing your name in support, either…

  96. EastSidePaul says:

Also why would you want to stay at a club where the fans are signing that you’re a c**t?
We like to think we are a class above everyone else, well not with crap like that.

  97. Lee says:

Also, Rico did you see as the palyers came out of the tunnel on sat,Coloccini and son had matching hair do’s…RVP was pissing himself!! 🙂 🙂

  98. rico says:

He would do that oliver, to tell the truth would be beyond him….

    I didn’t see that Lee, wish i had 😉

  99. allezkev says:

    Afternoon Gooners.
Hi Rico, one in the in-tray.
Hola Lee. Is Samir upset then, the poor dear….
    Off to read the comments.
    Keep The Faith…..

  100. oliver says:

this morning arsene comes out and says that he wants to keep nas onboard, even though it is evident the latter does not want to be here and will run his contract down if not sold this summer…

a few hours later, nas has a go at the supporters for the chanting from saturday…

i think the last illusion that we can keep him here under a “business as usual” atmosphere has just dissipated…if arsene does not want to sell him, this is a decision that should be made over his head. if he doesn’t like it and threatens to walk, call his bluff…

i am really starting to think that we are headed in that direction anyways…

  101. beck says:

udinese on general sale tomorrow tickets fron 35 pound.
    rosicky scored against sparta prague
    walcott scored against fc twente
arshavin scored against celtic who were a better side then than udinese are now.we managed to beat them without nasri walcott or rosicky
we should never be complacent but i don,t see why we should be running scared.
    we are the arsenal

  102. agirlagunner says:

Boo! Had a good cry 😥 over Cesc, and a better laugh 😆 at Nasri.

Good one, Steve. 🙂 Robin is the new face of AFC. Hey, rico, oliver, Lee, WATH, and everyone. 🙂

  103. oliver says:

hi agag…nothing to cry about – our former number four has departed…we can finally move on…the club has some critical things upcoming…things that require our undivided concentration and attention. we have no time to eulogize our just-departed former captain. he chose to leave, we should leave it at that…

  104. agirlagunner says:

oliver, Cesc’s not dead. 😉 But it may very well be career suicide. I do wish him well. Nasri, I don’t know how to feel about him at the moment, to be honest. He seems intent on moving to Citeh; and I can’t quite believe that it’s not about the money.

  105. rico says:

    Hi agag,

    I’m with oliver, don’t waste tears… 😉

Wenger said today that our club has been going for 125 years, one man/player is not bigger than our club…

Firstly, bigger better players than Cesc have left us and we survived…

Secondly – Wenger is right, no player is or ever will be bigger than AFC…

Thirdly – Wenger needs to listen to his own words and take heed, buy us what players we need to keep us at least in the top four………..

  106. agirlagunner says:

Too late, rico. They’ve been wasted. Let’s remember I shed a fair few over Clicky, too. Haha. 😀

But I completely agree, we are The Arsenal, and forever shall be. 😉 I want those no-nonsense defenders. GO buy ’em AW. 🙂

  107. oliver says:

agag, i am sure he will do fine there…that is where he wants to be and he does not have to carry them. i think he will see plenty of playing time, whether rotating with xavi, starting out as a sub, or guardiola accomodating him alongside xavi/iniesta for specific opponents…i have no doubt he will win trophies there and be a big success for them.

i am with rico, what is done is done…we can lament his departure, but this day was going to come sooner or later…

we just have too many important – make that critical – issues facing us…we cannot afford to just drop tools and reflect upon what might have been. we need to get through the udinese tie and strengthen the squad – and investing at least some of the cesc money in the first team squad. not kids this time, but credible, experienced, first-team ready players. they are out there, despite what arsene would like us to believe..

  108. agirlagunner says:

I was being facetious, oliver. 😉 I agree though, we need rebuilding, and our next few buys have to be Premiership-ready, no more of those for the future types.

  109. oliver says:

next more should be to find a new club for our number eight…that is another thing that needs to be dealt with…

  110. rico says:

Spot on again oliver, except, i have a feeling he won’t ever be at Barca what he was with us… but thats history…

Wenger has said that Nasri could go and funny enough when talkiing about Cesc he made it clear that Cesc didn’t move for money…

Unlike Nasri i feel he wanted to add but didn’t….

agag, you need a ‘tear check’ – Clichy??? 😉

  111. rico says:

Arsenal have been charged with failing to control players…

Song has been charged for viloent conduct

Arsenal will possibly be appealing the Gervinho red card – that means an extra game ban, they have nothing to appeal imho….

Come on AW, now build again or we are in trouble…..

  112. oliver says:

hi ricco…no surprise there…song, frankly, deserves what he gets…it was stupid, petty, and the kind of garbage we would expect from the likes of barton…

i would not appeal gervinho’s red – we have no leg to stand on. the fact that barton provoked him and the possibility that there was contact in the box do not change that fact that gervinho struck barton – the rules are as clear as crystal on this…i would not invite an extension of the ban, rather i would take the three and move on…

did you notice if there were any charges for newcastle? if the fa are going to hit us for “failing to control our players”, well…pardew and company certainly did a great job keeping barton and that scumbag steven taylor in check…

  113. agirlagunner says:

I’m very zzzzz-y! Must say goodnight! 4 airports in 16 hours. 🙁 Must. Not. Do. It. Again. 😉 Catch you guys, later. 🙂 Have a good morning, noon, night, wherever you are. )

  114. K-TR7 says:

Cesc is saying he’ll always be an arsenal fan…yeah right.i don’t consider him to be one after treating us like trash.i don’t care what he says since actions speak louder than words.he screwed us well and proper…no real arsenal fan would do that.i hope i never hear him talk about us ever again.

  115. oliver says:

ok, i see that newcastle has also been charged for failing to control their players…the fa should also put mr. walton in the dock for completely losing a grip on events and failing to apply the rules and common sense…i won’t hold my breath on that one..

  116. rico says:

    I wouldn’t appeal either oliver, like i say, they’ll add another game…

Song is a fool and should have know better….

  117. oliver says:

barton gets off because mr. walton made such a mess of this, taking the coward’s way out by showing him a yellow. it sucks big time – and is no way justice – but the fa rules are pretty clear that the referee has “dealt” with the issue, and therefore it is case closed…

  118. rico says:

Waltons mistake imho is turning his back on play, he’d just given a free kick to newcastle, suggesting Gervinho dived…. If he thought that he should have shown him yellow or red…

He didn’t and ran off up the pitch instead of keeping watch on the resulting free kick….

Like i said earlier, why? and what has happened in the game to stop referees running backwards, keeping an eye on what is occurring??

Footballers are expected to do that, referees should be expected to also… That is their job, they should be watching everything they can….

  119. rico says:

And yes oliver, funny how the ‘linesman’ didn’t see the Barton incident which sparked off the whole incident…..

  120. oliver says:

will, if you are talking about the events at st. james, i think arsene has already called for barton to be banned – the problem is that the fa’s disciplinary rules do not allow for that, as mr. walton already gave barton a yellow…as poor as that is, that is the system that we operate under…and this provides a good argument for examining and possibly changing that particular rule…

what i would like to see if mr. walton to be disciplined for losing a grip on the situation and failing to apply the rules…as ricco stated, he turned his back on the action and his lino was no help. there is also an argument that we should have had a penalty for barton’s assault on gervinho – in the area during a live ball situation…

regarding our players, i think we should drop the appeal on gervinho – regardless of what went on before/after, he struck barton…how hard he struck him matters not. it was a slap and that constitutes violent conduct.

for song, i wouldn’t have problem if arsene added a couple of matches to song’s impending ban…an “internal ban”, if you like…he was childish, petulant and when his fa ban is announced, we will see how badly he let his team-mates down…

  121. Will says:

Oliver. I am thinking more along the lines of Gazidis asking publicly how someone can start a fight and get a yellow but someone defending himself gets a three match ban.

  122. Adam says:

The frustrations felt at and after the Newcastle match are tiny molehills compared with what we have awaiting us this season. Arsene is in a trance with nobody to snap him out of it. Positive thinking and talking nonsense doesn’t get you any points unfortunately.

  123. rico says:

Will, no matter what our thoughts are about Barton’s antics, Gervinho should not react the way he did…..

I would rather Walton be asked questions about his abilities, why was he not there amoungst it all instead of half way up the pitch?

  124. oliver says:

will, he can ask if he wishes…but i suspect that he knows exactly why – it’s how the rules are stated – and that he will make himself look silly by doing so…he – or anyone at the club – would be better served by stating that there is an inherent flaw in the disciplinary process, and citing barton’s role in starting the entire melee.

i don’t like it any more than you do, but that is the system we operate under…and regardless of what happened in the 74th minute, there is no justification for what song did just before the hour mark.

  125. rico says:

I’d like to see a different law in the game be brought in and that is:

regardless of any incident dealt with by a referee, if there are grounds to extend or reduce any penalty given at the time, the FA have the power to do this on review….

Then, situations like the Barton provacation could be reviewed and he would get a red card for starting the whole incident….

  126. oliver says:

i would agree ricco…i think there has to be a method where, regardless of whether a referee has “dealt” with an opportunity or not, the league can still take action. barton would certainly be facing a deserved ban under these circumstance and we would all probably feel a bit better about this situation…

  127. stevepalmer1 says:

Barton had just kicked Song from behind and Song did not stamp, he trod on Barton, He should have kicked him in the next tackle but we know what would have happened then. again the television media has made a big thing out nothing Barton deserved more and his screams of blinding pain echo’s out, why didn’t he go after Song like he did Gervinho was it that Songs a bit bigger.

  128. oliver says:

no steve, song stamped…i saw the replay clearly and i saw it as a stamp…i will not defend that, regardless of what happened in the tackle a few seconds earlier.

  129. oliver says:

that’s fine, steve…you are entitled to your opinion, just as i am entitled to mine…i am perfectly happy to leave it at that.

  130. Will says:

Oliver, that is what I was trying to say.

he – or anyone at the club – would be better served by stating that there is an inherent flaw in the disciplinary process, and citing barton’s role in starting the entire melee.

  131. rico says:

    Hi Steve

Song didn’t tread on Barton, the ball had gone, the tackle was over – Song stamped, i have very little doubt about that…..

yes sky sports have replayed it time and time again but they have also replayed barton’s grab of gervinho the same amount, apart from dermot gallagher, most think barton was an idiot….

  132. rico says:

i guess you and i will agree to differ too…..

Just ask one question, had Barton done that to Song or any of our players, how would you feel??

I’d be livid and I would be equally as livid if Walton hadn’t seen it at the time as i would expect a red card to be dished out……

  133. oliver says:

then we agree on this one, will…we know there is a problem, and if they want to use this as a case where the existing regulations let the game down, that is the right way to go. at the end of the day, barton gets away with it, which is completely, utterly wrong…

  134. rico says:

Kt, forget him as a Gooner, good luck to him, if winning a medal by sitting on the bench makes him happy, then so be it…..

Ha ha oliver, i think you and i will have to disagree on that one 😉

  135. stevepalmer1 says:

I am starting to think that Arsenal fans are starting to believe everything that the press and media throw at them, i’m sorry i dont, we start our Champions league qualifiers without Wenger on the bench also Van persie, we will probably start our next three games without Gervinho and Song and you can’t see a pattern i watched John Terry yesterday push an opponent with both hands shoved him hard a bit like when Diaby got sent off not a mention, were playing by another set of rules. Lampard with a full length dive not a word, come on its as clear as day.

  136. oliver says:

steve, say that if you wish – i know you are directing it at me…

i shall respond by saying i think that some other arsenal fans are so entrenched in this fantasy of a concerted media campaign to destroy arsenal that it is affecting their ability to distinguish between right and wrong…

once again, song was wrong. that was indefensible and i refuse to defend the indefensible…

  137. Will says:

Oliver, I am not sure how much of the English press you get over there but Rooney dives for Man Utd and nothing is said, Eduardo dives and he is Saddam Hussain.

  138. stevepalmer1 says:

You will probably defend Taylor as well as he was as guilty as Barton but got away Scott free and we have five officials, did they all have their backs turned as well.

  139. goonster says:

Yeah Osi…..you made your point in the morning..let it go dude sheeesh besides steve is not and will never be rascist…

  140. Will says:

All I want to know from the FA why is it a case again of the instigator getting away with it but the retaliatory striker gets done.

  141. stevepalmer1 says:

Thank you Goonster, i love all our foreign players, i would love to see an all English team, but that has nothing to do with race,

  142. oliver says:

will, i read everything you do…i have also seen comments calling rooney, gerrard and others out for diving. i take your point about the abuse eduardo received, but in interpret the lesser coverage of the aforementioned players transgressions as english media protecting english players, more than them saying lets gang up to destroy arsenal..

steve, of course i won’t defend taylor…now you are being petulant because i disagree with you…i get that you don’t like it, but i don’t really care about that because it is my opinion and i stand by it. just as i see you have your opinion. i accepted that you saw it differently and would have been perfectly happy to let it drop, except that you rolled out some snide comment about me being easily led by the media…because i thought what song did was wrong…

  143. rico says:

Thing is though Steve, AW and AFC can only make complaints in the right and proper way and cite other incidents as comparrison…

On the flip side to what is being said, we always seem to be blaming the ref for our inability to beat sides – if we didn’t do what Song clearly did, and if Gervinho hadn’t slapped Barton, none of this would be talked about today….

  144. stevepalmer1 says:

I dont like to say it, but the comentator did, that once he gave a yellow he cannot be judged, sounds dodgy that

  145. rico says:

Will, i am surprised about your ‘pay back’ comment – two wrong don’t make a right in any walk of life….

  146. oliver says:

will, i have seen drogba get criticized for diving. i can also cite the example of cristiano ronaldo to support my argument that arsenal players are not the only ones pilloried for diving…

you and steve see it as a campaign to undermine arsenal. i see it more as an issue of english media protecting english players…i’m fine with disagreeing on this one…

  147. stevepalmer1 says:

Oliver when i answer you i will print your name, this is a debating blog not just you and me, when i write something its open to debate by every body, you missinterpreted my comment as having a go at you, you are misstaken, i stated that we dissagree’d, that should be the end of it

  148. rico says:

    Let’s draw a line under this….

Barton is a pelulant little s**t that winds other teams up

Song was in the wrong for stamping

Gervinho was wrong for slapping Barton

The ref was wrong for not spotting the fits grab of Gervinho

Taylor was wrong for jumping in and suggesting Barton was elbowed

Barton was wrong for suggesting he had been punched…..

That is why Gevinho got his red card, Song has been charged for stamping and bot AFC and Newcastle have been charged for failing to control their players…..

The only real factor in all this that peeves me is that Barton only received yellow for his participation/instigation in the incident BUT it cannot be reviewed because it was dealt with by a yellow card which imho should have been red….

Has Arsene Wenger not said similar????

  149. Will says:

    rico says:

Will, i am surprised about your ‘pay back’ comment – two wrong don’t make a right in any walk of life….

    It’s Joey Barton 😉

  150. oliver says:

ok steve, then i apologize for an over-reaction on my part. as we just had this discussion about song, i clearly felt that the comment was aimed squarely at me…i accept that you did not aim this comment at me and i acknowledge i was wrong to take it as such, and i apologize for my heated response.

  151. rico says:

Again i have to agree with oliver, the FA protect English players that play for England, Drogba has been chastised many a time for diving, as have other overseas players….

Our own Dudu being one of them….

  152. Will says:

    oliver says:
    August 15, 2011 at 7:28 pm
will, i have seen drogba get criticized for diving. i can also cite the example of cristiano ronaldo to support my argument that arsenal players are not the only ones pilloried for diving…

you and steve see it as a campaign to undermine arsenal. i see it more as an issue of english media protecting english players…i’m fine with disagreeing on this one…

    Same old arsenal, always cheating.

And that gets so much fucking press it pisses me off and I am sorry Oliver, you are not here and you don’t see it.

  153. rico says:

Will, you don’t have to live in the UK to see the garbage in the press, the internet allows acces to all newspapers which i am sure all our overseas fans access regularly…

I am sure that every fan, regardless of where they live see/read and listen to all the deroragtory stuff that is written about Arsenal….

Out of interest, do you go to The Ems every home game??

  154. oliver says:

sorry will, i don’t have to be physically present in england to see what the media write and form my own impressions from it…

the “same old arsenal, always cheating” has been around a long, long time…far longer than eduardo, bob pires, or any other of our players who have recently been accused of diving…

i get that i am not going to persuade you differently, and have no problem with it. but i stand by what i said about the media protecting english players more than trying to destroy arsenal football club. in this day and age, with global media, i can see everything anyone else does…

and, the issue is not what i see, it is how i interpret what i see…again, i stand by my position.

  155. Will says:

No but I read all reports and see the disgraceful way we get treated.

The Eduardo thing is a case in point, that was a BRUTAL witch-hunt against a really decent guy and if our board had any bollocks, they would have come out defending the guy.

  156. oliver says:

no will, i do not think it is wrong. i know full well it is one that you don’t agree with – again, i fully accept that you don’t agree with it. but i believe my position is right…just as you believe yours is.

  157. stevepalmer1 says:

Re your comment rico, Barton has been seen as lieing to the referee he stated that he had been punched and the referee had ruled on his sayso, that means that this incident is not over the proof is there for all to see and ungentlemanly behavior should come into play and video evidence should be rectified, a panel sitting should be asked that if they had been subjected to the abuse that Gervinho got wouldn’t they defend themselves and would he have slapped anybody had they not intervened

  158. goonster says:

Oh ok……just haven’t seen him in a while. I did something weird today guys ……I arranged all my cesc shirts in a row and lay on them. From his first number 57 to his last number. Guys am so emotional. First we didn’t get my mata now we ve lost my favorite player…..what to do…what to do

  159. rico says:

    Will,

that is exactly my point – you don’t go to the games so all you read/hear and see is exactly the same as any overseas fan has access to….

It hits us all Will, regardless of where we live…..

  160. rico says:

Steve, did the ref not act on the say so of the two lino’s?? I saw them all consult and then Gervinho saw red…

yep, Barton and Taylor lied but, the ref only dealt his cards after his officials told him what had gone on….

I don’t really get all this if i’m honest – regardless of what the newcastle scumbags did, Song was in the wrong and so was Gervinho….

If some what to protect and condone a stamp and a slap then all i will say is don’t complain the next time it happens to one of ours…..

  161. rico says:

goonster, let him go, and then go order a shirt with Mata on 😉 😉 Might not be an arsenal shirt though 😆

  162. Will says:

I am sorry Rico but I have seen absolute bile written about us in the press and we get held to a far higher standard to any other team.

Look when Shawcross performed his assault, it was portrayed as Shawcross is a great guy and it was the Arsenal’s players fault for not being tough enough.

It is time we put a stop to this dross.

  163. stevepalmer1 says:

We should have got three penalties for the same incident instead we get a man sent off and banned for three games and thats fair. and they got a yellow is that an agenda or what and to cap it all the do song as well for video evidence thats crap

  164. Will says:

Rico, Gerv wasn’t wrong, he acted on instinct. I have practised Martial arts for over 12 years and I can tell you, if a lunatic manhandled a martial artist like that and then a couple of his mates decided to hold that Martial Artist from behind, you would see a lot more than slapping.

You can not and should not have a pop at Gerv for doing what comes natural when you are being attacked and he was being attacked.

  165. allezkev says:

    Evening Gooners….
    What’s happening?
    Is that Oliver upsetting everyone???
He’s just got the hump because there’s no cricket today.. 😉

  166. rico says:

Will, then go and write to Wenger, Gazidis and Stan, – that is there job, not a job for a nice, friendly arsenal blog…..

  167. rico says:

    Will,

ok, you think what you think about Gervinho’s reaction – Goodness gracious, i hope no-one slaps one of our players this season…..

Also, I have practised martial arts for the last 25 years, it taught me about control and restraint…..

  168. oliver says:

i don’t think ricco is taking a pop at gervinho. regardless of what we feel about how he was provoked, striking an opponent is classed as “violent conduct” and is a sending-off offense…that is not her opinion, nor mine – that is in the rules…the rules that govern how the match is played.

truth be told, if our other players were more proactive, someone would have reacted quicker, got between barton and gerv and moved out player away. if we were able to do that, we would have had only barton’s frenzied assault – and i think he would absolutely have been sent off…

i know how difficult it is to restrain yourself when struck, believe me…it’s gervinho’s first competitive game here and he got an early “baptism”…after the ban is over, i am sure he will be the wiser for it, and will not be provoked in such a manner again…

  169. oliver says:

evening kev…my baseball team has just lost five in row…my nfl team lost it’s opening exhibition game…this with arsenal – not having a good run here.

  170. stevepalmer1 says:

Sorry rico never saw your answer, i can see where you stand on this and accept your view.
But why didnt the officials tell him of the assault.I saw it didn’t you

  171. oliver says:

steve, i think the whole official crew mishandled this one…walton blew it, and his linesman did nothing…

  172. rico says:

    Will says:
    August 15, 2011 at 8:01 pm (Edit)

What is not a job for a blog Rico?

    You lost me here Will???

  173. K-TR7 says:

The Daily mail and the Sun must be spitting feathers at the moment…the cesc saga over the past 3 years was their main source of income in the sports section.

  174. oliver says:

evening kev…i have never been to a super bowl or world series game…ticket prices for those events are generally astronomical…

  175. stevepalmer1 says:

Even on the news they are showing Cesc with his Barca friends will it ever end surely this has been milked enough

  176. rico says:

Exactly Steve, I did, that is just what i said earlier – the only ones who have not got this right are the officals, our players are guilty but so are the lino’s…

Had the officals been in the right place, Barton would have been seen, maybe ever Gervinho would have had the chance then to slap Barton….

And, again as i said earlier, the review system should be reviewed to take this kind of incedent in hand… Barton deserves a retrospective red card but as it stands, that cannot happen…..

  177. rico says:

Well, I have a glass of spanish white as i type, the last time for a few weeks as the ‘day job’ starts aging tommorrow after 3 days off (not that i didn’t pop in )

But i’m always shattered these days 🙁

  178. allezkev says:

I did see Aaron Ramsey in there, pulling Gervinho away, he showed a lot of maturity.
But where was the others? Nobody made sure that Gervinho stayed away from the melee.

  179. stevepalmer1 says:

We have made three signings this window and that shower of shite down the road has made none and stand to lose their best player and not a word, their manager ready and waiting to jump ship and take the second best job in England, and there is not an agenda

  180. Will says:

I agree Gerv had to go but the law should allow for Barton to be done as well and I will stand by my knowledge that we get far worse treatment in the press than any other team.

Look at the abuse Wenger is taking daily by these cretinous hacks.

Does Fergie get it? ;Roy Hodgson? Did Jose? The press loved Jose.

  181. rico says:

Steve – they’ll be reporting this story for months and then wait until barca win their first trophy…..

  182. allezkev says:

I’m not 100% here, but i think FIFA/UEFA regulations prevent a yellow card being reviewed.
Our FA don’t have the power to change the rules.

  183. oliver says:

kev, depends upon where the match is played, who is playing and where the seats are…for a super bowl game in (dallas) cowboys stadium, the cheapest seats will go for at least a couple thousand bones…the best seats? probably ten-fifteen times that…

world series are scheduled seven games, so tix will be cheaper, especially depending upon who plays. if the yankees get back to the world series this season, the cheapest seats there will probably be a few hundred – but they will be next to impossible to get…

over here, the teams participating in the championship series/game often have as much to do with the ticket pricing (i.e. seats will be more for the glam teams) than the location…

  184. Will says:

But where was the others? Nobody made sure that Gervinho stayed away from the melee.

Bit hard when two of Barton’s mates were holding Gerv from behind.

  185. rico says:

Isn’t that what we are saying about Barton Will, are we not saying the rules should be revised to allow his kind of incident to be reviewed….

I don’t know why you wind yourself up about what is written about Wenger…. It’s been going on since 1996, why give the idiots who write so much dross, so much pleasure…..

I don’t suspect Wenger looses a wink of sleep over it…

Mind you, nor would i for £6 million a year 😉

  186. oliver says:

anyone watching city stink it out against swansea…no score yet, but the team that finished above us last season looks decidedly ordinary – at least in the early going…

  187. allezkev says:

Oliver. So you don’t have season ticket holders, who get priority?
    Or some kinda membership scheme?
What’s the average capacity for a Grid Iron stadium?
    Or a Baseball Park?

  188. Will says:

That is what I was trying to say, Gazidis needs to ask the FA in public why this kind of thing is allowed to continue in the 21st century.

  189. allezkev says:

Will, do you think that Adams, Keown, Bould or co would have let the Newcastle players manhandle one of their team mates…?

  190. stevepalmer1 says:

Been lovely chatting or should i say debating with you all thanks for all your comments but i’m off, thanks for your help rico, Oliver i still luv ya son Will, i dont care what the others say your right mate, Goonster look after yourself mate and AK, helo and goodbye you old bugger, nte nte. Oh and Ozi nte nte.

  191. rico says:

I’m off too guys, early start for me….

Thanks Guys and Gals, catch you all tomorrow…

    Nighty all…

  192. K-TR7 says:

The cesc saga was a guarantee to sell.now the hacks should go elsewhere but am sure rvp sagas will start soon if he doesn’t renew his contract.hacks should go elsewhere but am sure rvp sagas will start soon if he doesn’t renew his contract.

  193. oliver says:

kev, season ticket holders always get priority…

over here, we have something insidious called a personal-seat licence (psl)…that is where a supporter pays a fee for the option to purchase a season ticker…that’s right, pay a fee so you can pay another fee for your season tickets…needless to say they are hugely unpopular with supporters…many teams use these psl revenues as part of funding for new stadiums…

can you imagine the uproar of ig brought the psl concept across the pond to the ems?

largest capacity stadiums…in the nfl, that is fedex field (only a few miles up the road from where i work), home of the washington readskins, with a seating capacity of over 90k, in baseball, dodger stadium in chavez ravine (los angeles) can hold around 60k…

  194. Osi says:

Hi all I believe that we should leave Nasri alone, He has right to think about his future and what’s good for him as everybody else in this world. He did nothing wrong in my opinion. Arsenal were and still are in the wrong. they know what the player has been offered and they refuse to increase their offer to compensate for him that lost opportunity.

Unlike Fab, Nasri didn’t asked his friends to disrupt Arsenal football team, we didn’t see any of his friends claiming that his desperate to join Citeh or any other club.

  195. oliver says:

night steve…no harm, no foul…other than me over-reacting, that is…but it’ all good…same to will.

    night ricco…

  196. oliver says:

fedex is here in washington dc, home of the (hated) redskins…soldier field is in chicago – that is where the bears play…

lets see, i grew up in the bronx, so i have been to the old yankee stadium (they opened a new one two years ago) countless times…d-train to 161st street and river avenue, and we would get cheap tickets, sit in the bleachers (cheapest seats) and act fools…of course, this was between the end of the billy martin (circa 1981) and start of the joe torre (circa 1996) eras, two of the most successful periods in that team’s history. as a mets homer, i have not yet been to citi field, but have been to countless games at the old shea stadium and hated it…that place was a dump. the mets stadiums are in flushing, queens, right next to arthur ashe stadium, where the u.s. open (tennis) is held…

i have been to nfl games in the meadowlands, superdome (new orleans), qwest field (seattle), and jack murphy stadium (san diego). besides yankees and mets, i have seen baseball games at camden yards (baltimore), kingdome and safeco field (seattle), jack murphy stadium and petco park (san diego), angels stadium (anaheim) and chavez ravine (los angeles). i may have even forgot a few there…

in england, i went to numerous games at highbury, as well as games at wh*te hart lane, anfield and elland road…

night steve…no harm, no foul…other than me over-reacting, that is…but it’ all good…same to will.

    night ricco…

Dude, I always do that when talking about The Arsenal, it is called passion. Never apologise for it.

  198. oliver says:

darn…city look completely different from the first half…3-0 up now and they don’t look like they are done scoring yet…

will, all good…yes, i would say the new york subway is most confusing…i grew up riding it, but it took me a while to learn it…and this is from someone who has ridden the london underground, paris/tokyo/singapore/dc metros, hong kong mtr, san fransico bart, among other city rail networks…

it took me forever to get used to the different irt/ind/bmd lines…eventually, i just concentrated on the train numbers (i.e. d and 4 trains running through my part of the bronx)…for destinations along the grand concourse and into certain parts of manhattan, i knew d train is what i should take. for desinations along jerome avenue, i knew the 4 train was the best option…then from certain points in manhattan, such as 59th street (a hub station similar to london king’s cross, or shinagawa in tokyo), i knew i could jump off to connect with most other places…but it took a while.

  199. Will says:

Me and a mate visited NY and decided to take the Subway, I swear we walked almost to our destination by the time we found our platform.

Have to say though, Wv and Md are west Md are beautiful places.

  200. oliver says:

we live in maryland right now and like it here. we have a nice house, kids go to a good school and we live in a nice community…

city 4-0 over swans…i hope the unimpressive city of the first half is the real version, not the one that ripped swansea to shreds in the second…we’ll find out over the next several weeks…

  201. allezkev says:

Oliver, i asked you a question, and then disappeared, sorry mate.
    That was an interesting answer.

Man, i thought i’d done a few miles, trips to Wrexham, Carlisle, Newcastle, Sunderland and mid-week to Middlesborough [meaning the ‘milk train’ home].
But you’ve done Louisiana, Washington State, California and a local trip to Maryland…… Not forgetting your trips here… you’ve certainly earned some ‘air miles’, following your teams.
I,ve not heard of Anaheim, but it sounds Dutch to me!

  202. allezkev says:

I think the ‘noisey neighbours’ mean business this season.
Just goes to show what £200million+ can get ya…..

  203. alan b'stard M P says:

you mean will he stay? RVP needs a couple of his Dutchmen to assist him. Even a coupla good Englishmen would help

He won’t get the assistance of course
