Morning all.
Yesterday’s FA Cup 3rd round threw up some interesting results. Newcastle Utd lost at home to Cambridge Utd, Burnley got beaten at home by Huddersfield Town and Reading were knocked out of the competition by Kidderminster! Both Everton and Southampton needed extra time to win their ties against lower division clubs. The best result of the day came at Boreham Wood though as the National League club beat League One AFC Wimbledon 2-0.
It’s Arsenal’s turn today and a tricky fixture it is too. Nottingham Forest are doing well in the Championship and are no doubt hoping to secure promotion to the Premier League although it’ll probably have to be via the playoffs seeing as they’re 15 points behind League leaders Bournemouth, 12 behind Blackburn. Since the transfer window opened, Forest have signed three players, Canada international Richie Laryea from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis and Steve Cook from Bournemouth.
As said, there’s already been a few surprise results this weekend but that’s the glory of this competition. League form goes out the window as it’s a winner takes all fixture, especially for the lower League clubs who hope a place in the next round will see them drawn away to a Premier League club.
Steve Cooper is around the twentieth manager Forest have employed in the last ten years and even he hasn’t been in the hot seat for long. Whilst Michael Cox writes that Cooper has turned around Forests’ season, his side have lost their last two League fixtures. Perspective though, any new manager needs time and recruitment if they’re going to succeed.
Enough of Nottingham Forest, Arsenal probably go into this game as favourites but I think that means nothing really. Away from home this season, Mikel Arteta’s teams have been up and down. We’ve seen really good performances against the likes of Leeds, Norwich and then West Brom in the League Cup, but awful ones at Goodison Park, Old Trafford, Anfield and The Etihad. Which Arsenal we see later today is anyone’s guess really.
Arsenal are without Gabriel as he’s suspended and I did read that Granit Xhaka is missing too. AMN has gone off on loan, hoping to make his debut against Juventus later today, so our midfield is going to be a bit of a mix and match. Sambi Lokonga is back in training so it looks like it’ll be him +1. Not an ideal situation at all and unless Xhaka returns a lot quicker than he can run, it’s going to be like this until Arsenal do something in this transfer window.
I think this month is huge for Arsenal. Right now we’re in the top four, the semi-final of the League Cup and we’re in the early rounds of the FA Cup. By the end of January, we could be out of the lot if Mikel Arteta and his players levels drop.
We could also finish the month knowing we’re heading to Wembley in February, bragging about doing the double over the noisy neighbours and be looking forwards to another FA Cup match.
Arsenal have been here before around this time of year and that’s why I think Mikel Arteta is right when he says no fixture is more important than another because they all really are as important as each other. Winning becomes a habit and even though Man City beat us in our last match, I still believe Arsenal won on the day. We had the best team in England, probably Europe, on the ropes for much of the game and that’s something to be proud of. Something to push this team on for the rest of the season and beyond.
I just hope Mikel Arteta and his team don’t go and cock it up against Nottingham Forest!
See you in the comments.
Good morning Rico from a sun drenched Norfolk, very different to yesterday’s rain soaked version. 😉
It might be time for a bit of creative thinking on Arteta’s part, Chambers as Partey’s replacement in midfield makes sense leaving Holding and White to join Tierney and Tomiyasu in the back four. The rest of the starting eleven virtually picks itself.
Morning Rico,
I hope we get to see Charlie Patino and Harry Clarke and maybe another couple of youngsters today. It’s a tough match they are doing well but I can’t see them beating us on our current performances. Having said that it’s the FA Cup and results tend to always throw up interesting outcomes just ask Newcastle!!
My main concern it obviously midfield because that’s where we will be exposed but we have excellent youth players who can come in and do a job. It’s pretty clear now that maybe we should have signed another midfielder in the summer. Hopefully we wil add reinforcements this month.
Game on!!
Morning Rico and All
We should win but anything could happen if we take it to easy,
I have been thinking about a good but cheap midfielder, I know his not having the best of seasons this year, I have come up with Allan saint-Maximin from Newcastle and being second bottom I would guess he will want out and according to one report I read his worth around 30 million pounds age 24 height 1.73m
Morning all.
Geoff, I doubt he will be looking to leave now they have a new owner.
He will hang out for an upgrade 🙂
Morning Cicero, Geoff, Mig and all.
Harry Clarke has gone to Hibs on loan I think.
Isn’t Chambers in the for sale list?
Aussie Geoff, lol tell me you were jesting. He’s almost the perfect impact sub, but I think he’s way too selfish he could have so many more assists if he just looked up. I think Jack Grealish is another selfish player, I would suggest though that Pep will drive him to be far more intelligent player in the future, I know he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer 😂 . Then he will be a world class player.
Morning anti- vaxxers, morning Rico…
Scott you’ll end up with the Rozzers around your gaff clapping you in irons if you carry on with all this positivity.
Morning Kev.
Good post Rico, Man City and Chelsea didn’t fiddle about as they picked strong teams and got the job done properly, that’s how you do it and Arteta will I suspect do the same. With 5 subs that leaves a lot of scope to bring players off on the hour when the game is secure. We have 4 days to recover for Anfield so let’s go one game at at time and go strong!
Kev, the Ashes have me smiling hahaha
Nah your lads did a fantastic job today and it was one of the best test matches I’ve seen for years.
Bairstow would be one of my favourite all time non Aussie cricketers!!!
Arsenal is doing well.
The man Mikel is getting it done.
I’m 100% over Covid.
Life’s good 😉
Scott, are you trying to ‘needle me’? 😀
Thanks Kev. Like you, I want to see a strong team out there. There’s a prize at the end of the Cup and we might need it come May.
If losing the ashes ensures Silverwood gets the boot, good.
😷 I’m taking precautions when talking to you Scott.
I’d never do that Kev hahaha
Though no needle for me for at least 6 months now 😉
It’s almost two years since the first lockdown in this country, I remember talking to several Aussies in the days leading up to it and how they needed to get home before Oz closed its borders, it was a surreal feeling, as if you were actually in the midst of a science fiction film or one of those daft zombie movies. Driving down the Strand in central London when the streets should have been packed and seeng them totally deserted will stay with me forever, it was deeply spooky. That was a long ride home from Charing Cross Station to Essex and the uncertainty was palpable.
I’m glad we can find some humour in it now because it’s been a frigging nightmare, I’m quietly optimistic that the worse is behind us and that this year will be an improvement on 2021, small steps back to normality and maybe one super flu jab a year?
Wise man, Cicero 😉
That’s right Rico, we can’t afford to be choosy, we can’t pick and choose which competition to focus on, Man City and Chelsea focus on all of them and that’s the way to go for me…
Yes Rico I agree on Silverwood, his record is poor…
I was pleased to see Crawley get some runs
Kev, people here have stopped harassing those of us who are not vaccinated as when we have 95% fully vaccinated and the numbers of poistives are exploding, well, they now realise they were lied to and the vaccine hasn’t done a single thing to stop it even slow the spread.
Not to say it hasn’t helped people, but that’s the lie we were sold-getthe jab so we can get back to normal.
Anyway, enough of that garbage.
Gameday baby 😉
Not sure if it’s down to Silverwood, but whoever made your team selections ought never be allowed a say in such calls again!
Every Aussie was laughing from day 1 of the tour.
Scott, I think that trust is in short supply across the globe especially when we see our politicians flouting the rules they impose on us, but for me the vaccines have been a good thing, just my opinion you see, it’s lessened the effects and prevented a total breakdown in our health services, that I believe was the plan, it was never a cure. I mean influenza has been with us since 1918 and it’s not going away, you just try to manage it.
Scott I think we were hamstrung from the off because of preparations, I would never have allowed the tour to go ahead because of the restrictions and lack of warm up games
Agree Kev. Funny how we get a draw when Silverwwood is missing. Lol
I agree, the Ashes should never have taken place this year. It’s ridiculous really.
Ditto re the Vaccines Kev, I hate taking meds but I’d hate to be in hospital on a ventilator or worse, in a coma.
Kev, the vaccine should simply have been sold to us for what it was, an aid, yet it was sold to us as our savour, and it’s been forced down our throats in a way that goes against everything that democracy stands for.
People being refused medical assistance because they’re not vaccinated?
Get the jab or lose your job.
That says it all, imo, and Australia will never be the same.
Yes no international sport should’ve taken place recently.
Pure madness imo.
https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12512229/josh-cavallo-out-gay-adelaide-united-left-back-calls-out-homophobic-abuse-during-melbourne-victory-game
There really are some ghastly people in this world.
Mig players can change just look at Ramsdale and White every one laughed when we brought them but know look at them.
Morning rico, housers, 5 hours to go!
I’d have Silverwood back in a flash. He turned Essex around from really struggling to winning Championship 2nd division then immediately the first. I blame the importance the ECB has given our 4 day game, playing it out of summer at beginning and end of season.
For that joke of a 100 ball tournament based on money and no natural affiliation of teams. I tried to watch a game and it just meant nothing. Players thrown together for money 🙂
Anyway, crumb of comfort getting a draw, having no matches preparation (only partly due to weather) is todays game unfortunately with so much cricket played.
Jabs were good on the original variant, but 2 doses AZ went down to 6 per cent protection after 6 months on later variant. Let’s hope Omicron signals weaker variants from now.
Glad to see you got away lightly Scott! Not everyone so lucky.
Enough rambling, bracing walk in the sun over, is game on yet? Don’t like hanging round to 5.10, games used to be at 3!
Thanks Andrew,
Plenty around me have been bedridden and few hospitalised so I know how debilitating it can be.
Rico, scumbags like that are hard to ignore, but it’s best if we do.
I take it the massive rise in Australia from under 2000 to 100,000 a day is due to Omicron? Bad news if it’s Delta! Is the Djokovic row splitting Australia?
Morning Andrew, perhaps he’s better at a club rather than country. Happens a lot in sport.
Catch up later, I need a walk whilst it’s not raining.
sports people should be judges by what they do on the field and not their private life’s,
Banning fans does not work after all they just wait a couple of weeks then walk up to the ticket gate and buy tickets and walk in. it’s very hard to remember one face when you have 40 thousand plus fans trying to in. it needs a very heavy fine as money talks
Rico, it seems Managers need to be in the right place at the right time. Poor old Unai. And Moyes didn’t become a bad coach overnight at ManU, look at the job he’s doing now?
Can’t even forecast who is alongside Lokonga today, it’s weird that it was tailor made for AMN to have another attempt. Arteta better bring in someone quick!
Maybe Arteta and Edu’s judgement was right on Willock, and his goal scoring run was a bit like Ramsey’s? I wished him all the best, but he’s hardly been a shining light at Newcastle. Haven’t heard any talk amongst Arsenal fans about missing him?
Nah Andrew, it’s because we’ve opened up.
Once the vaccination rate hit 95% here in NSW, all restrictions were eased and bang, Covid exploded.
People overseas use to marvel at how Australia handled things but I always said it was a false bravado we had.
All we did was delay the inevitable.
People are getting it for the first time, we have damn high vaccination rates and to be totally honest, the few people I know who aren’t jabbed and have caught Covid recently had much milder doses than those who are vaccinated, and people can believe that or not, but it’s the truth.
To be fair, many of our recent restrictions have been said to just delay matters, but only by weeks! It’s amazing to think how long some of your areas locked down for relatively small rates, and now it hits this bad. Maybe NZ is the working model, or maybe they get the same when they open up? I know so many here getting CV for 2nd or 3rd time, prob all different variants, funny how we don’t include them in our daily figures! We only report first time cases!
Was thinking yesterday, if my mum or dad were able to come back for a day, they wouldn’t believe me if I tried to tell them 150,000 had died in UK, or 5 and a half million had died worldwide from a virus. Or Arsenal had been out of the top four 🙂
Andrew the premier of Victoria changes his mind every minute about the covid numbers, according to him we are over 95 % vaccinated in Victoria but our numbers of positive case are higher now then when we were 50% vaccinated.
Djokovic case is a embarrassment for all concerned, first government said yes now they say no, Tennis Australia sent him a letter to say he can come and play but are now saying the rules changed, Now Djokovic in court the state government asked the courts for more time to make their case but courts said no.
Djokovic lawyer claims hotel is not fit for people to be detained in and that he was questioned for 6 six at the airport before they took him to a hotel to catch up on sleep and jet lag.
now we find out that a female player was also sent back on the same grounds.
Glad the Olympics are not in Australia especially Victoria.
At least it’s some different News, not a favourite sportsman for me, times like when he wacked the ball against that ball woman. But it seems an awkward situation now for Australia whichever way it ends up.
These FA Cup rounds always make nervous when we play a lower club as you never know what to expect from them as they have nothing to loose.
Who remember a couple of season back The player of a lower club eating a pie on the bench during a match.
Yep, Australia looks amateurish over the Djokovic situation.
A video came out today if our PM stating the special exemption was given to Djokovic by the Victorian state government.
The video was dated the day before the man arrived here.
So why was it accepted then, yet 12-24 hours later, our federal government rules he couldn’t enter?
Typical bloody politician, having a bit each way.
Andrew, NZ will get smashed.
Everyone will catch Covid, it’s matter of when.
Omicron appears to be the by far the most easily transmitted.
Less lethal though, which is obviously good news.
It’s just impossible to converse without Covid taking over lol
Geoff, that pie eating sub was pure gold 🙂
The case of the hotel is down to expectations and no doubt when he travels the world he either stays in private suites and has every coceivable luxury available.
From the pictures shown on U.K TV it would seem that the rooms are what you would expect in a travel inn or Raddisson hotel . Perfectly suitable but not up to the standard he is used to but certainly not prison as his mother asserts
Arsenal Women two nil down at half time to the bottom team in the league. I hope its not an omen for our cup tie later today.
From what I have read, Djokovic is free to leave the country at any time.
Totally agree re Moyes Andrew, Utd didn’t give him enough time or support. Serves them right. Similar could be said about Unai Emery, why wasn’t someone at the club supporting him in relation to signing the player he wanted and ridding the players he didn’t want.
Perhaps the problem wasn’t the manager, but the likes of Raul, Ivan etc.
Lokonga and Patino in midfield

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport:
“We’ve trained since Friday pretty much and that is what we decided with this line up. The boys really fought hard. When you get the first goal against you so many things can happen but I liked the way we responded.
“We started with five really young boys. They are really good players. We played so many safety passes in the first half. We knew we could play better football in the second half.
On Kaide Gordon being the second youngest scorer in Liverpool’s history: “He’s a real talent and his main strength is his finishing.”
On Covid cases in the squad: “We only have one real extra positive case and that is Trent Alexander-Arnold.”
So why couldn’t Liverpool play Thursday’s game??
Xhaka has Covid 🙁
Because rico, they wanted a much stronger lineup v Arsenal and get away with it

Too many changes, Arteta is not taking this game seriously enough. ESR not in the squad.
AFC confirm that Xhaka and Balogun have tested positive for COVID-19. Smith Rowe out due to a tight groin, while Tomiyasu is out due to a tight calf.
Rico.. I’m scared.. time to pull the sofa out? 😆
Exactly Andrew, makes me sick. It’s cheating.
Ha ha Sue. This will be very tough I think.
Look on the bright side re Xhaka, might speed up our deal for a CM.
This could be a very tough week, Rico. Hope ESR and Tomi are back for the spuds!
We might have to postpone Thursday 😉
It all looks a bit light weight to me. Does lightening ever strike twice at the same venue?
Good going forward a bit lacking in mid field and the back four could find themselves a bit bullied! Imo, of course!
The club that keeps on giving have lost to Brum, bottom of the league, one point only, to the Arsenal ladies who started unbeaten and having scored 66 goals already this season, could hardly manage a shot on target today and lost 2-0.
How does that happen?
Let’s hope the Arsenal men turn it on today and win comfortably.
Tough month Sue. Any idea how many Covid cases we have in total?
That result is bonkers Wavy, who’d have thought eh. Complacent perhaps, a bit like another Arsenal v Birmingham fixture which still cheeses me off.
Leicester if we beat Forest
Home tie v Leicester for the winners of our match.
2 from what I can gather, Rico…
Thanks Sue.
Holding Captain. Good choice.
Any chance we can bring a midfielder in before Thursday?!
With Arsenal? Probably not. 😆
The gloves are out, bless them. 😆
🤣 It’s not the Arsenal way, Rico.. 50 minutes remaining in the window; now you’re talking!!
😂 Sue, we’re deadline hour specialists.
Awful first half.
Not at all impressed with what we are doing. Tavares has been hooked off and doesn’t look happy about it. Chucked his gloves on the ground. Petulant!
AMN straight in for Roma; currently 1-1 with Juventus.
Mikel get your hairdryer out
Brilliant from Roy Keane, Arsenal look like Real Madrid, playing like a pub team. 😅
Silly from Tavares, but he’s young.
We should have had a penalty, not saying we’d score from it though..
More like his tin of gel Sue…
Tavares was being roasted, he might not like it but needs to watch the video of his play . I hope JM wasn’t right about him .
As suspected we have no midfield getting forced wide and crossing to nobody.
This is good for us , it’s laying bare our squad deficiencies.
Also shows what a strange idea it is to have let AMN go.
We’ve either got to beef up the midfield or put Lacazette on and push him high up the field. If things don’t change radically Forest and Leicester can have a fourth round East Midlands derby.
Hey Scott, Geoff what in Australia do you call someone who gets drunk on very little alcohol? It’s a crossword question. 3 3 8.
Our passing is shocking.
Lost it now
We’ve got what we deserved
Our movement is also shocking, so is that defending
Forest want it more than us
Absolutely awful. Kolasinac on when we need a goal??
Well done Nottingham Forest, totally deserved victory.
Arteta and the players should hang their heads in shame.
Too right, Rico. It was like a bloody training session!! Absolutely awful.. imagine what those filthy scousers will do to us
Pisz poor. No midfield, Saka and Martinelli shut out by their defenders. Nketiah not good enough to lead the line. Even White and Holding not being able to pass to a team mate. Can’t blame it on Tavares, everyone was as bad. Only Leno excused, and a great save.
Poor performance, poor game management and does it set a standard for Anfield because if we turn up like that we’ll get roasted.
Tavares needs to grow up quick or he’ll be out the door.
Nketiah was like a spectator.
Pawson is the kiss of death, he’s a right frigging jinx.
Roma 3-4 Juventus (10 minutes to go) some turnaround! I should’ve watched that instead!!
Shameful!
I’m dreading it Sue.
Agree Andrew, bar Leno, Saka and Martinelli, Arteta could have liked any of them off, not just Tavares.
We can’t battle when we need to . Too weak and second to everything . Get rid of Cedric and get that right back he played Martinelli out of it .
From half time onwards it was penalties or nothing, we had nothing up front. Did we have a shot on target ?
Kev, Nketiah played like he wants out imo.
I was pleased to see that they still have an August performance in them!
That was a disgraceful performance, disgraceful!
There can be NO excuses, none whatever. Bar three the team wouldn’t have faired any better had they been playing Boreham Wood. In fact B W would probably have won too.
SHOCKING just Shocking!
Their right back was very good.
I don’t disagree Rico, but if Nketiah wants out, to a good club, he’s not exactly going the right way about it. He missed a sitter at Everton and repeated the trick today, nobody is going to want to pay a fee for him, based on today’s performance, this January I’m afraid.
Cicero answer one pot screamer.
Didn’t get to see match but as I said earlier these matches always make me nervous as you don’t know what to expect from the other team as they have nothing to loose.
By the sounds of things this match didn’t earn Arteta any brownie points
I doubt a club will pay much for him anyway Kev, not when he’s free in a few months.
To me, he always looks like a player who needs a run in the team, but he’s not going to get it at Arsenal under Arteta. Vicious circle..
All we will get is a training fee but following today’s performance his number of suitors may well be thinking twice. Nketiah is probably one contract away from fulfilling his potential only then will we know if he is another Wright or a Jeffers .
Anyone giving him a three year contract is taking a gamble be it us or somebody else.
Terrible. There was no shot in the goal line throughout the game.
I don’t know if it’s an impossibility, but I don’t understand why the same failed and wrong system was maintained from the beginning: it was enough for Forest not to press high, for the central defenders to have to lead the game and everything was blocked. As in Wenger’s time, if the centrals match the game without the aptitude to do so, if the creators of the midfield are not freed and you don’t have wingers opening the defense, everything is blocked. No wonder that at the end of the game, the two centrals were the ones who touched the ball the most. No speed, no ideas, no aptitude to prepare the game, they ran with the ball and then the ball returned to the same place or was lost. A bad performance and a revealing and heartbreaking lack of solutions.
Could have switched Saka and Martinelli as we had nothing going through the middle and their right back was a match for. Martinelli and Saka was getting a kicking whilst double marked. Lokonga and Patino were just about holding their own but offering little.
We had nothing on the bench but in a game where physicality was all important we needed to do something to upset their tactics.
Rico did we just have a bad match or did we really get shown how lucky we have been in the past few matches as I was unable to watch the match. I looked at NN for the first time in ages and the all seemed to say the same thing, 3 players were rubbish and the coach should go.
Morning all.
Geoff, look at the starting line up and compare it to our best 11-chalk and cheese.
There’s been no luck involved mate.
Guys that won’t be at the club much longer and kids.
People are looking far too much into this lol
The squad is not yet complete.
It’s much better, the basis is fantastic but more fresh blood is required.
Was Arteta following his old boss’s lead, not playing a central striker? Even Guardiola isn’t that keen on the tactic as he tried to buy Kane last summer. There’s little point playing two wingers providing crosses into the box with only Nketiah trying to get on then end of them. Lacazette should have started, he would have at least been a presence up front.
When we needed an equaliser, why take off a midfielder and replace him with a left back? Totally illogical.
Djokovic won his case to stay and play.
Scott unfortunately when you don’t get to see the match you can only go by what is written and by the sounds of it Arteta took the match too lightly. That’s why I asking people who may of seen the match for a better idea of what went wrong.
For sure, Geoff, but NN is about last on the list of sources to take notice of.
You surely don’t need to be advised against taking notice of people who say “sack the coach” after one poor performance though.
Put simply Geoff, Charlie Patino, Sambi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard were completely out-fought and out-run in midfield, provided nothing for the forwards and little in the way of help for the defence.
Makes sense, Cicero.
I didn’t see it.
Arteta has said we are very short in central midfield so there can be no doubt at all a signing or two are imminent.
Which begs the question, why has he let AMN go to Roma on loan? It’s just stupid Scott.
It shows the parsity of the squad , With Partey as our only actual midfielder ,the ones he has always fallen back on Xhaka injured ( covid again ? ) and Elneny in Africa and now with AMN in Italy with Torriera and Guendouzi in France the chickens have come back to roost.
Lokonga is a twenty minute sub to get experience when things are going ok , we are as weak in midfield as we were when he got the gig.
We all know that midfield is the engine room and if you control there , you control the match .
It’s all well and good having attractive attacking players up front and we have those in abundance .However without a natural goalscorer . We need workers that play for a few years and get replaced when they are burned out.
Hale End produces nice touchy players that are great on the ball but once they get a bit of attention they are found wanting.
All credit to the tactics of Forest , they spotted our weakness and went for the throat and we had no answer.
I actually felt quite relaxed throughout the game ,From the moment we realised that Tavares was having a mare and that their right back was as quick if not quicker than Martinelli I thought that it had every chance of going to penalties . Neither side looked likely to score and it took a mistake from Lokonga to expose our defence and let them through .
I put that down to our iinexperience on and off the pitch . These days are going to happen , if we don’t govern the match we get beaten and will do until we become more pragmatic.
The pattern was set in the opening few minutes their midfielder Zinckernagel ‘s first three contributions were to flatten Saka , Lokonga and Patino all within 5 minutes . It took Pawson 35 minutes to book him, but that set the tenure , we were not to get any time on the ball and were forced to play hurriedly and were knocked out of our stride.
Morning all.
New post up.
Spot on Potter.
Totally agree Potter.
We knew the Acon was coming back in the summer, so there are no excuses. We knew Covid was still going to be around too but as a club, we ignored the midfield which is as you say, the engine room of any team.
How Sambi can be expected to go from being injured, having Covid and then starting a game. I really don’t know.
