Belgian on trial, Arshavin could be off & Arsenal making up the numbers!

Morning Gooners,

Details of the Premier League and Champions League squad are out.

Premier League

Each club have to name a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the home-grown player criteria, the remainder must be home-grown.

Clubs can name up to 25 squad members, not including under-21 players.

Premier League squad:

Arshavin

Arteta

Cazorla

Chamakh

Santos

Diaby

Djourou

Fabianski

Gervinho

Gibbs

Giroud

Koscielny

Mannone

Mertesacker

Podolski

Ramsey

Rosicky

Sagna

Squillaci

Szczesny

Vermaelen

Walcott

Eastmond

Funny thing to notice is Craig Eastmond. All the rest are in alphabetical order with the Englishman ‘plonked’ on the end.

Oh well, he’s in there much to my surprise, as is Squillaci – making up the numbers no doubt.

Andrey Arshavin is also included despite rumours about him being offered the chance to leave for free. The Russian transfer window is yet to close, so that move could still take place over the next few days, if of course it is true.

Champions League squad:

List A:

1. Wojciech Szczesny

2. Abou Diaby

3. Bacary Sagna

4. Per Mertesacker

5. Thomas Vermaelen

6. Laurent Koscielny

7. Tomas Rosicky

8. Mikel Arteta

9. Lukas Podolski

11. Andre Santos

12. Olivier Giroud

14. Theo Walcott

15. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

16. Aaron Ramsey

18. Sebastien Squillaci

19. Santi Cazorla

20. Johan Djourou

21. Lukas Fabianski

23. Andrey Arshavin

24. Vito Mannone

25. Carl Jenkinson

27. Gervinho

28. Kieran Gibbs

29. Marouane Chamakh

47. Serge Gnabry.

List B:

10. Jack Wilshere

22. Francis Coquelin

26. Emmanuel Frimpong

This list is yet to be completed.

Full Champions League rules can be found here but I have ‘stolen’ a shortened and more simple version from Arseblog News.

Every club participating in the Champion’s League must submit two lists of players to UEFA, List A and List B. List B is for young players and there is no limit to the number of players that can be submitted on that list. List A is for any player not eligible for List B. A maximum of 25 players can be submitted on List A, of which at least 8 must be “locally-trained”, and of those 8, 4 must be “club-trained”.

If the club doesn’t have enough players to fill the slots for locally-trained players it will have to leave those slots empty. If the club has more than eight such players, any surplus player will have to take up one of the 17 remaining slots, leaving fewer slots for players who are not home grown.

THE DETAILS

So, exactly how do we determine which players fall into which categories?

In order to be eligible for List B for next season, a player must be born 1991 or later and he must have already spent at least two full continuous seasons at the club. This means that if we buy a “wonderkid” we will have to register him on List A, even though he is young enough for List B. Loan spells at other clubs can also sometimes cause a player to not fulfill the second requirement, even though he arrived at Arsenal more than two years ago.

The composition of List A is as follows:

Slots 1-17: Any player can be put into these slots.
Slots 18-21: Only for locally-trained players (association-trained or club-trained)
Slots 22-25: Only for club-trained players

A club-trained player is a player who has spent a total of at least three full seasons with the club between the ages of 15 and 21. An association-trained player is a player who has spent a total of at least three full seasons with clubs affiliated with the same association as his current club between the ages of 15 and 21.

Great to see Serge Gnabry included in the Champions League squad but the thought of seeing Squillaci or Chamakh featuring in any match other than a dead rubber, is frightening.

Little bit of gossip, and that relates to Belgian 17 year old Ismail H’Maidat – the young midfielder is reported to be on trial with our club. You just knew there had to be a young one in there somewhere this summer…..

That’s it for today, only another eleven days until Southampton come visiting….

Have a good one..

I would say that Mihir Bose is the best argument for selective breeding that I have heard. Alongside Durham obviously. That goes without saying.

  3. rico says:

Going on from the news yesterday surrounding the stabbing of a man in Liverpool – three men have been charged with his murder and are appearing in court today.

All suspects were in the away section at Anfield

  4. Joywedsjeff says:

Rico…away section? Gunners killing gunners? Wonder what the man must have done to die like that? Very unfortunate

  5. rico says:

Not necessarily joyweds, the victim was from London but he could have been a Liverpool fan and the suspects, although in the away end, could very well have been Liverpool fans…

Socking though, whatever the ‘reason’ behind it…

  6. rico says:

Morning Adam, how are you this lovely sunny morning?

Sadly, they are everywhere in life, just hope that they get the book thrown at them, regardless of who they support….

  7. rico says:

Morning CG – seems so doesn’t it re Arshavin, seems strange to let a player of his experience go at this stage of the season.

Makes me wonder if Steve Bould doesn’t like his work ethic…

  8. rico says:

Hi emma, so the ‘he can go for free now’ is not quite right…

    Great news on Jack…

Now we just need to get through the international games without suffering any injuries…

  9. Micko says:

    Morning all,
Spare a thought for Cesc this morning, moaning about his lack of first team football, my heart goes out to the poor lad.
Peter Hill-Wood, do us a favour and stick a sock in it.

  10. Canadian Gooner says:

The club seem intent on cutting the wage bill right down to the bone. Bartley and Lansbury, two players who seemed to have a future with the club have been sold. Both players were no longer elligible for the U21 exemption and would have had to be declared as two of the 25 man PL squad list. Is the club saving player slots and wages for the January trans fer window?

  11. emma says:

rico – Yes it’s not right. Arsene to sell for £5m but will not extend his contract. Will allow him to go on a free when his contract expires at the end of this season. Russia transfer market open till thursday so there is still a chance an offer might still come in. Fingers crossed

  12. rico says:

Mind you, Chamberlain is about to get a new deal, £15k I think he is on a week, surely that is about vastly increase

  13. Canadian Gooner says:

Micko — Maybe Cesc and Ronaldo can whine and sing laments as a duo. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.

  14. rico says:

I hope so emma, or maybe Jan. Wonder why they won’t renew his contract? Has to be attitude shown last season, if only he could sort himself out and be the player he once was….

  15. Adam says:

Micko. Hill Wood can’t shut it. He’s an old Etonian and they are known for being some of the most stupid people around. Look at Cameron and Gideon Osborne. A pair of silver-spooned toffs and as thick as planks. Rich and stupid. It’s an English tradition.

  16. allezkev says:

    Hi Rico, great post btw.
It seems to me that AW/the club, have accepted that Arshavin, Chamakh and Squillaci are set to see out this season, probably as bit part players, League/FA cups, dead rubbers in CL etc.
    Hi Canuck.

  17. allezkev says:

And yes Rico, thankfully it has been busy this week.
    Good job too.
Adam, I just cringe every time that stupid buffoon PHW opens his mouth.
Why the need to mention the Spuds?!
Anyone with half a brain just needs to swerve around the question.
    But I blame Kroenke.
That useless shit left PHW on the Board.

  18. allezkev says:

Rico I have 2 or 3 posts for ya, in an early stage.
I’ll send them to ya later today and leave it to you to smooth them out, ok

  19. W.A.T.H says:

2/3 posts AK, I hope one is about that geriatric tool PHW and why he is such a complete insult to the intelligence of ALL Arsenal supporters everywhere. He’s a f’kin embarrassment and a piss taking pratt at that..! Somebody please lock him in a vault and leave him there til the end of his days..!

  20. rico says:

    Hi Wath, TT

Thanks AK, look forward to them, as TT says, International weeks are boring and it’s always really quiet…

Few spicy posts might gee us all up a bit 😉

  21. Will XL says:

Hello all, what exactly did Peter hill wood do? I missed that one. Also, it’s terrible that such violence exists in our beautiful have. How widespread out how frequently do acts of violence occur? I would hate to think that when i finally get to see my beloved team playing in person i might end up being a statistic.

  22. W.A.T.H says:

Hi Rico and all on this oh so slow footie day… Internationals should be banned… I’m with Micko…! total waste of time to make Sepptic richer and Platini fatter…!

  23. rico says:

Hi WillXL, not sure what he has been saying, i try and avoid reading the rubbish he spouts…

I’ll be glad when they are over Wath and we suffer no injuries hopefully

  24. Will XL says:

Rico, upon further reading, i gather is the bit about us not being able to compete… Stuff that i really didn’t read either.

  25. Joaquim Moreira says:

..The Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion doesn’t think he’d have the frame to help out Arsene Wenger on the pitch, but he still thinks he could help restore the ailing club’s glory days.
“I don’t think I’d be any good at playing, but I’d like to help out at the Gunners for sure,” Farah said.
“I was talking to my wife the other day and I said: ‘I’d make a good fitness coach for the team or something,'” he added.
“I could try to help players if they were injured or going through hard times, be able to do little things with them.”
Farah has long been open about his love of the trophy-shy club, who have won nothing at all since the 2005 FA Cup.
In that time Farah has collected 10 golds, five silvers and a bronze in World and European competition; perhaps his best role with the club would be helping them cope with the pressures of success should their days of woe ever come to an end.
If he did link up with the Gunners, Farah would not be the first Olympian to try his hand at training footballers as former decathlon champion Daley Thompson has spent spells working as fitness coach for both Wimbledon and Luton Town.

  26. Adam says:

Hill Wood is such a twat but is not guilty of saying what he is accused of, regarding not being able to compete. He said that Arsenal would not spend £50 million on one player and I think we all know that. But old Etonians are “born to rule” and have little in the way of common sense. Hill Wood has never done a day’s work in his life so I tend to find most of the effluent he speaks to be mildly offensive. And he is of course, a huge hypocrite. First he slaughters Kroenke before changinging his mind and accepting his shilling, then turns his attention to belittling Usmanov and casting doubts on Russian business while surreptitiously being the mouthpiece for some extremely dodgy Russians himself. He is an embarrassment to Arsenal.
Like I said. Old Etonians. Not very bright.

  27. NashuaGunners says:

    Good Morning Rico and all.
Good read for this morning and at least we know those who are not leaving just yet. Ben52 gone but I would have prefer him than Chamakh. Squillaci, well I cant blame him with such weekly wages, who won’t?

  28. rico says:

I don’t let his comments bother me Adam, he’s an old fool who thinks he matters. It’s a shame really when you consider all that his family have done…

He’s a tad fickle if you ask me….

Thank NG – Nik maybe gone, but it’s only a loan sadly. But yes, out of him and Chamakh, I think he could have had more of an impact on the pitch than the one we are left with.

  29. Adam says:

Looks like Big Nik shares Kolo’s love for the KFC family bucket then.
Agreed Rico. But to give an interview to Mihir Bose must be like speaking to raw sewage.

  30. Micko says:

WillXL, PHW is like an old dinosaur who suffers from foot in mouth disease.
Wath, I thought Michel Platani was gonna be a real breath of fresh air when he turned up on the scene but he’s just as bad if not worse than Sepp Blatter, they deserve each other.

  31. rico says:

Ha ha Micko, it really is dire, 6 wickets down now,….

Needs the heavens to open and rain to fall until 10pm, only way England have a chance of winning this series…

  32. vernat1066 says:

Still on the bright side at least we don’t have to put up with KP’s antics now, disgusting how he treated Andrew Strauss

  33. allezkev says:

As I said earlier, I blame Kroenke.
He is responsible for the ‘care home’ candidates we have on the Board.
He’s happy to let them deflect attention away from his casual lack of interest in our football club.
The bottom line and a profit is Stan’s priority.
He know’s most of the Board are a bunch of self-serving freeloaders.
    But that suits him.
As long as Wenger is in charge, he can take a back seat.

  34. vernat1066 says:

Sorry if that is true that is disgusting Rico, an absolute disgrace how he can be back is pathetic the cult of personality has finally run mad.

  35. rico says:

Curtley – one of the best bowlers in the best era of WI cricket…

And, he played for the county i supported a few years ago, together with Sir Ian & Sir Viv 🙂

  36. stevepalmer1 says:

    Evening all,
Nice one Rico, gives us some idea of who’e staying and who’s going i suppose. JM Serge Gnabry has been playing for the reserves his hopeless and will never make it.

  37. rico says:

Evening Steve, you kidding re Gnabry 😉

I’m surprised Eisfield doesn’t feature in either squad, maybe he’ll make the CL B list….

  38. stevepalmer1 says:

There you go JM, you now know a little bit about Eisfield as well, just the way you ask the question thats all 🙂 JM who’s Eisfield ha ha

  39. Will says:

Playing devil’s advocate for a minute. Can any of you slating PHW match this?

He is the third generation of his family to serve as Chairman of Arsenal, following his father, Denis Hill-Wood (in office 1962–1982), and his grandfather, Samuel Hill-Wood (1929–1936 and 1946–1949). Peter Hill-Wood succeeded his father after the latter’s death in 1982. He is not in charge of any day-to-day business at the club, which is generally run by CEO Ivan Gazidis, with manager Arsène Wenger responsible for football and first team affairs.
Hill-Wood was a colleague of Chips Keswick at Hambros and subsequently saw him recruited to the Arsenal board to provide strong City contacts at a time when the club were financing their new stadium.[2]
Hill-Wood sold much of his family holdings in the club to former vice-chairman David Dein in the 1980s and 1990s and the rest to Stan Kroenke.

  40. stevepalmer1 says:

Will, i have never been an admirer of HillWood but it would seem wrong not to have one in there and what he stated is about right we are never going to compete with a 50 million bid for anybody whether we had it or not. Hillwoods name has been associated with Arsenal fc all my life and i feel it should stay there as well.

  41. Will says:

He has also said that Tottenham won’t get near us this season. Is he wrong for saying that or just the things the majority don’t agree with. He and his family have done more for the club that every reader on this site combined and I find it a bit distasteful the things that are said about him.

  42. rico says:

PHW and his family have been good to and for Arsenal, but imho, he has now become an embarrassment…

All his comments about how we won’t need, or be selling x,yz players, only to see them gone….

If he doesn’t know what is going on, keep quiet….

  43. stevepalmer1 says:

Will, thats why Rico has put the sentance where its ok to disagree people see things diferently and i can see the pro’s and cons on both sides, Hillwood has been fortunate that wealth has been passed down in generations, his money that he has now i doubt if it was earned by him and your statment that he has done a lot more than a lot of the supporters sticks in my throat a bit, many of the supporters have worked hard for their money and they spend a fair amount on their tickets, i can understand how supporters who are paying more than other clubs for their tickets expect top players to be brought in. thats what i said i can see both sides of the coin.

  44. Will says:

Steve, yes we pay a lot to watch The Arsenal but he has worked his entire life for the good of the club. He has (in his time) got the right people in to keep the club going and where would we be without a Hill-Wood at the helm. I have no problem with people disagreeing with his statements but again, some of the childish name calling is uncalled for.

  45. rico says:

Trouble is Will, like all things in life, you can do so much good but then just as quickly you can undo it all…..

Wenger has been floating around in a similar situation for a few years.

He came in, changed our club, he signed wonderful players and we were a force to be reckoned with.

Then the quality signings were replaced with average and our club suffered, some will say we are still suffering…

Time will tell what this season will bring, hopefully it will all be good. By that I don’t mean winning silverware, I mean looking like a side that could….

  46. stevepalmer1 says:

I agree with the name calling, i don’t like to see that, as i don’t like to see supporters abusing one another because they disagree i would rather move on to another subject i believe its ok to disagree.

  47. allezkev says:

    Evening Rico.
Got my tickets for Coventry today.
Really looking forward to seeing the youngster perform in the League Cup.

  48. Will says:

Rico. would you change Wenger for anyone? Also, is the lack of signings his fault or a by product of having to fund a new stadium (a stadium that clubs the stature of Liverpool and Tottenham can’t afford to do) without going under? Now we are seeing the likes of Podolski and Cazorla arrive and look at the football we are playing and forgive me if I am wrong but, no one had really heard of Vieira, Petit, Henry, Ljungberg until Wenger made the great. Yes we have had some duds but thanks to an artificially inflated transfer market, signing truly world class stars is becoming almost impossible.

I am not saying people should agree with Hill-Wood, I am saying there should be less of the name calling until your family (and I say your in the general sense) have served the club as well as his.

  49. rico says:

And just at the right time Steve, AK is here talking about the CO Cup against Coventry…

Evening AK, will be a fab game I suspect, good it’s a home draw too…

Quite a few PL sides have drawn each other which is also good….

  50. rico says:

yes I would Will, he is not indispensable, and some fans need to realise that we have £100M sitting in the bank, BUT AW chooses not to spend it.

Yes, there is an argument that SK should be forcing him to spend it but he is in it for himself too.

Back when GG was manager, i bet many fans couldn’t even entertain him leaving, I didn’t but Arsenal are bigger than any one man, whether that be Wenger, PHW and certainly SK….

  51. allezkev says:

Thoroughly enjoying my football this season, ever since I saw the stiffs at Borehamwood, it’s been a total buzz.

  52. allezkev says:

Sir Stevo, my esteemed friend, how’s things, plenty of work I hope?
Rico, what was on the menu this evening?

  53. allezkev says:

Stevo, there were two kids that I desperately wanted to see in pre-season, Gnarby and Toral.
    Unfortunately, I missed them.
But the little i’ve seen of Gnarby, on-line, makes him look a bit special to me

  54. rico says:

Simple dinner Ak, chips, baked beans and veggie sausage rolls 🙂

Sometimes a bit a naughtiness is just what the doctor ordered….

  55. stevepalmer1 says:

Will, i susspect your a bit of an old traditionalist a bit like me, they would still be wearing their old kits from the fiftys if i had my way, i don’t like too much change but its inevitable now adays and no one gives a shit now, we just have to move with the times i can remember my mum telling me to turn my music down because she didn’t like pop music and i couldn’t understand why i do now though.

  56. Will says:

I am going to disagree with you there Rico. I think at the moment there is not another manager on the planet who could do this well for us and make a profit with one and a half eyes on the FFP ruling coming in.

  57. stevepalmer1 says:

AK, i had a look at whats being said about him and it looks good he was an athlete who never lost a race, but took up football instead, i only hope he passes the ball better than athletes pass the batton.

  58. rico says:

Each to their own Will, and I knew you would say that about AW….

😆 Steve – blame the neighbours, they always moan about loud music too

  59. allezkev says:

There were still a few exciting talents that I saw pre-season, Chuba Akpom, Kris Olssen and Jordan Wynter.
Hope to see them vs Cov.
    Lata you Gooners.

  60. stevepalmer1 says:

Yeh i’ve taken on a bit too much to be honest AK, i come home and have to sit in a hot bath to loosen up but after this last job i’m going to put my feet up and do a bit more fishing, lazy bugger aint i 🙂

  61. Will says:

Anyway, the young kids coming through look the best for a while and I am hoping some will get a chance this batch.

  62. stevepalmer1 says:

If i speak truthfully Will i don’t follow the youngsters that much but i must admit what i have read of some of them they do sound quite promising, After Wenger brought in new players i was thinking the kids had been tucked up but as always the old bugger has included some hopfully we may have a few good uns.

  63. Will says:

Steve, looks like the old days where we have a distinct first team and youth team and I think they will do what they used to and play in the League Cup.

  64. stevepalmer1 says:

Will, I know your a knowledgable Arsenal man through and through but somtimes you let your passion out and take somones comment to heart, i know how you feel about traditions and Arsene as well, it goads me at times when i read it but we have to take some of that on the chin, not everybody understands the same way you do and they get the hump, Personally i like the way you blog i know you care but you have to chill a bit mate, i didn’t like it when you wasn’t on , just one old gooner to another mate.

  65. Will says:

I will Steve, I remember watching Terry Mancini and Richie Powling. I remember the old sports shack in the ground and I also know that not every team can win and that this is just football.

  66. stevepalmer1 says:

Mind you Will i reckon we may just have the makings of a bloody good team this year, and old buggers like us may just get our turn to have a snigger or two

  67. Will says:

I think we really do and the defence has a lot to do with it. I want to see how we compete against Man Utd, City and Chelsea’s attacks but I honestly believe we have the best midfield in the league. Now, if we can just add another top name to the attack and we are well and truly sorted.

  68. stevepalmer1 says:

Maybe Christmas Will, i have to admit i was supprised by what he did in this window i really didn’t expect as many. Will love talking with you but i have to be on the site by seven and i’m knackered so i’m off up the apples and pairs catch you later mate nte nte.

  69. Scott from Oz says:

I am a little bit with Will here on a few points.
I have said it before and i stand by it…..Wenger is not perfect, but he is perfect for Arsenal right now.
PHW’s statement was up front and honest, and regardless of whether or not people agree with what he said,he MUST be given credit for telling is how it is.
We are not all kids…..we don’t need things to be sugar coated, and we certainly don’t want to be told what we want to hear.
PHW made some very valid points, and if the statement is taken in it’s entirety, then i am content he has the clubs welfare at heart.
Whether or not his idea of what’s best for Arsenal is something people agree with is a different topic.
One last point i’d like to raise for discussion…..share prices.
Most tend to believe the owner and the board are in it for the money, the profits.
Most tend to think that every decision made has one thing behind it…..raising the share price!
Putting a totally neutral cap on for a moment, but isn’t a high share price the best possible indicator of a well run organisation??
Would we rather share prices be low, because surely that would tell the world that Arsenal is struggling??
Agreed, more can be spent, but i also agree with PHW and Wenger in that it is financial suicide to pay more than a player is worth on a constant basis, and that is what plenty of the high flying clubs are doing.
I know i am in the minority, but i still can appreciate the standards our club have set,and i have absolutely no doubt in the coming years we will flourish while others will stagnate, and maybe then Wenger will get his true respect.
Just don’t tell us you ARE going to spend, next time…….say nothing,Arsene.
Shit Rico…that’s almost a post lol
Sorry guys….hope you don’t fall asleep reading it!!

  70. vernat1066 says:

Hi I agree that there is no need for the name calling but I can also see how some of his statements have been hard for fans to take. As for the players in and out chances are that a manager with the experience and track record of Wenger will know more than me about that and what he has at the club and what he needs to compete. But with the lack of protection we get from referees and the injuries we pick up I do worry if we get a sustained period of injuries.

  71. allezkev says:

    In-box Rico…
Interesting points on here this evening.
When you look at the way the club is run, self-sustaining.
Then what was the point in selling the controlling share to Kroenke???
Unless the point was for profit?!

  72. Canadian Gooner says:

    Scott — I agree with most of what you said in your 10:51 pm post. I don’t think most people are objecting so much as to what he said but;
a.) It was stating the blindingly obvious, so there was no need to do so.
b.) It reminded us of a subject that is a real sore point with many of the club’s fans (i.e. Silent Stan is not a sugar-daddy owner, but a busineeman who wont be pouring monet into the club).

  73. Scott from Oz says:

CG,most know but do choose to agree with Arsenals busniess model when it suits, then detest it when it doesn’t.
If a Citeh fan said to a Wenger hater that our club sucks, the response would be along the lines of “we haven’t sold our soul, and i am proud how our club is run”.
That same person would be whinging to his mates about how the club is run ten minutes later in the pub.
I will say it again….opposition fans have more respect for our club and how it’s run than plenty of Gooners do.

  74. CowboyGunner says:

Hey Everyone…read through the posts as I’ve had a few minutes to spare tonight after helping the kiddos with their homework and watching Bill Clinton tear it up at the DNC…

So first off, chill blaze on the poor chap, Jlubegas, about the message being sent from his Blackberry! That’s his tag line that probably goes through with all of his messages and posts…Blackberry’s can do that. I hope people noticed that his automatic tag line also said, “Die Hard Gunner.” it’s his autotag and he thought enough of the Arsenal to let the entire world know where he stands…

So hats off to you Jlubegas on your BlackBerry® smartphone on the Tigo Tanzania Network.

The other note was about someone posting that maybe in a few years AW will be recognized for the good work he’s done as several other clubs become stagnant after being weighed down with their incurred debt. In Mexico, Wenger is definitely revered as a shrewd and wise man. He is definitely respected in Mex NOW. Andele Papi Wenger!
