Arsene Wenger confirms defender deal and striker should follow…

Morning all.

Arsene Wenger has been talking transfers, yet again. But that’s all he seems to be doing, talking but not doing. I’m sure other people are involved in any deals the club are trying to secure but they are clearly as inefficient as the Frenchman. Whilst Arsene and the boys are having fun in America, parading the new expensive kit, dipping into ice cold water and working out in the gym, someone else is surely trying to get a couple of transfers over the line at least.

The Frenchman’s latest comments will hardly fill fans with confidence though:

I buy players that I feel can strengthen our team. Today you have to be very strong inside the club when you are responsible, not just to buy [for the sake of buying]. There’s always a wave of opinions. I must say people are better informed today – they know all the players. They tell you always that you should buy but when you ask them who to buy, they become much shorter. If you look at the market in Europe, there’s a lot of money available but not many players who really strengthen the teams. If you look at the teams that spend the most money in Europe, they’re not necessarily the teams that won the championships. The global investment of the clubs around us didn’t stop Leicester winning the championship.

The Leicester excuse for us not winning the league last season is poor, in fact if I was Arsene I’d be embarrassed to keep spouting that line as all it does is highlight how poor Arsenal were in their challenge for the Premier League crown. And let’s not forget, we didn’t finish a close second last year, we were way behind Leicester. Oh, and it’s not buying for the sake of buying, it’s buying because you bloody well need to Arsene!

As for there not being many players around who would strengthen our current team, then he clearly hasn’t been watching much football over the last few years. I know not all will be available to buy as they either don’t want to move or their club flatly refuse to sell but let’s be honest, money talks in most cases, unless we are talking Messi etc…

Talking about transfers:

We are still on the market for players. [Be it] at the front or at the back – we are on the market. Unfortunately we are not alone. The best way to conclude transfers is not to talk about them, which is very difficult in the press conference! We are on the market but I don’t want to talk specifically about any player because that makes it more difficult for me – and it’s difficult enough.

But why is it so difficult? Two months has passed since the season ended and imo, that’s plenty of time to have sorted out our striker and defensive problem and as much as Merts hasn’t long been ruled out, we needed an experienced centre-back regardless. As for the striker, we’ve needed one of those since the day RvP left and hoping Walcott would solve the issue was a real gamble, one which really hasn’t paid off. I’m convinced he could get Lacazette if he really wanted too, the same with Icardi but he’s got to be prepared to meet the clubs asking prices and not be stubborn over paying the extra few million pounds, not if he wants to have any kind of chance of winning something in what will hopefully be his last season as Arsenal manager. Although I fear he’ll be at the club for at least two more seasons after this one…

One thing Arsene has done though is to confirm that a defender will soon be through the door as when asked if he expects to sign a defender before the season starts, he said:

Yes I do.

Please Arsene, don’t let it be Jonny Evans as the back pages suggest this morning. Mind you, if we believe The Sun, it could be Swansea’s Argentinian International Federico Fernadez…..

Have a good Sunday guys…..

    Thanks Rico.

Arsene being sarcastic will only piss the fans off more !
“I must say people are better informed today – they know all the players. They tell you always that you should buy but when you ask them who to buy, they become much shorter.”
Now listen Arsene you are an intelligent man or one fcuking lucky bastard who gets paid £8M per year for rocket science brain on a game that`s as simple as ABC.
Us fans know as much as you, we have begged you to buy players and other clubs have got in before you, we have scouted players like Griezman and said buy him when he was at Malaga amongst other players etc`…………infact, I would have told you not to buy Stepanovs, Kalstrom(loan), Sanogo, Jeffers, Silvestre…………fcuk me the list goes on and then theres the players you have told us you could have signed but were too tight to pay that little bit extra !………………It`s not rocket science as you would lead us to believe, it`s fcuking simple………we all know who are decent players and who are not so !………..arrogant cnut !…….rant over………10 mile run !

    Morning All

    Morning Rico.

Rico, when I saw that rumour, I simply could not believe it.
It’s the kind of Mel Charles, Tommy Lawton (post Notts County), Pat Howard, kind of transfer that Arsenal periodically go for because we have been skinflints for most of the time since 1939-40, when football was suspended for the duration…

We struck lucky with Joe a Mercer and Ronnie Rooke just after the War and it’s become a kind of tradition, when Arsenal are going through a period of transfer stagnation, they try this cheap option, be it Brian Kidd, Jimmy Rimmer or Mark Heeley or John Kosmina or John Hawley or Ray Hankin or Terry Mancini or, well you get my drift…

  3. rico says:

Does irk doesn’t it LC. No players… Transfers difficult… Rubbish I say, other clubs don’t seem to be having a problem….

  4. Wavy says:

Jonny Evans IS Syllvestre’s clone! Sender os all over again but without the Swiss’ IQ!
Ffs. he’s gone shopping at Netto again! If the back pages are to be believed? Well, they’re not, are they? Maybe it’s an August 1st fools joke.
If that’s the best we can do, we are fooked indeed! Players are hard to find who would improve the club and not upset his current crop of favourites? Evans is just not the right quality at all a blind deaf dwarf ( Morono?) not even he would look twice at Jonny without a lump of laughter in his throat!
Please Asene get a grip and a firm hold on reality and find the ‘right quality’ to fill our holes. The man is fast becoming a contradiction in his own life time!

Morning all. Sunny and bright here with just a few heavy cloud on the horizon.

  5. Silky says:

Good morning all great read Rico!
I think this crap bout buying better players than we have is just that…crap!

Strength in depth is something that we seem to have until o let’s say November and then seems to be strength in shallow!

But back to this buying better than we have nonsense, nobody can tell me there’s no player that would have improved our right wing issues over the last few seasons, no upgrade on Fraud14 to be found at a reasonable price?

I’m calling bullshit on that one.

  6. allezkev says:

To be honest Rico, I wasn’t too over keen when I saw us linked to Danny Welbeck, back then. But he’s done ok, not that he’s prolific in front of goal, but he’s done ok…

Jonny Evans is out of the same class, the kind of 2nd tier, let’s just get by, type of transfer, to cover up our shambolic transfer policy…

    Is Evans better than Chambers?
Is Evens better than Holding, in the short term?

    Is Evans better than Squillaci?
Or the two monsters at Leicester?

    Is he better than Mertesaker?

    It’s a fcuking joke, but I ain’t really surprised, why should I be, it’s what Arsene does…

  7. rico says:

I don’t believe it for one minute Wavy and I hope we get the German guy, either of them… 😉

I was Kev re Welbeck, I think anyway and I’m pretty sure he’d have got a lot of goals playing up front last season, had he not been injured of course… Plus he’s a real grafter for the team..

I’m really sad for him that he’s going to miss a large chunk of this season too…. A fit Welbeck could have seen a gone Walcott…

  8. Silky says:

Did u guys ever think that with Wengers penny pinching ways up until now he is afraid to spend?

I don’t mean due to being miserly, he missed out on some Great players due to dickin on over a few pounds here and there. It’s even trending on Sky sports as I type.

Then when he finally spends big, it’s on Özil who incurs the wrath of the media due to the cut of his jib and general not arsed posture! Sanchez took a bit of criticism also last year! Last years big signing also cost us a few wins (long range shots cough).

I reckon he is now afraid to spend incase he gets it wrong n buys a dud! It’s a sad state of affairs!!!

No sympathy here I reckon those Great players were generally within a couple of million pounds of being ours! But hey we got Gervinho!

  9. rico says:

Hi Silky, I saw that on Sky. The nearly Arsenal players. Funny how they don’t do that with any other club other than Arsenal but I guess there’s a reason for that…

  10. Silky says:

Rico I don’t think other managers brag and boast about missing out on players especially when they go on to be superstars

What sticks in my mind is Hazard, instead of buying Gervinho (because Hazard didn’t want to leave that season) we shoulda bought Hazard and let him stay another year!

We never seem to do a Chavsea on it n just be ruthless!

  11. Silky says:

I no rite if I were him I would be thinking oh shit what if someone found out I could have got 20 world beaters before they were worth a lot of money!

Haha Rico if you couldn’t laugh you’d cry!
It’s ridiculous haha aw man I dunno

  12. beejay says:

Greetings folks. Arsene is FOS!!! For a team that contains players who are better than those players from teams that have beaten or drawn games against Arsenal, it should mean that we are world beaters.
    Breaking news!
We are not unbeatable and the early signing was simply to thwart the moment that was being get generated by the fans to see his back. He has done this enough for fans to ignore and not renew season tickets etc.
Thank Arsee for his contribution and if he opts to leave the club then so be it.
We will continue to struggle with him at the helm. He makes all the decisions and has admitted as much for 2 seasons.
    Let him go.

  13. Obi says:

Wow!!! Is he really that clueless now? LC happens every twenty years Arsene. He really takes Arsenal fans for fools. There was a time when I really liked and respected him. Then again it took 3+ years to get DM so what do we know? Stop talking Arsene.

  14. rico says:

Cheeses me off big time Silky. The club have plenty of money, just spend a bit and adapt a few new tactics. We might actually do a lot better then…

  15. frednerk says:

    Morning All
    Wonder why wengers telling
the world we must get a defender in.
Yet when questioned about a new striker
He says its best not to talk about it.

    Nurse…Nurse…

  16. thenry says:

le cpq monster yes you do know a lot griezman wasn’t at malaga he was at real sociadad
wow another blog full of fans and the blogger himself who know it all better theN Arsene even

amazes me the amount of constant negativity around Arsenal and the abuse that is given to our manager and some of the players by our so called know it all fans

just give it a rest most of you including the BLOGGER couldnt manage a pub team let alone scout players and then fit them into the team and tactics
funny that since rvp left we have actually scared more goals as a team but don’t let the facts get in the way of your delusions of grandeur

Yes it can frustrating that we have not signed players but I have faith that the man in charge will do what is required and i AM SO GLAD THAT WEV DONT HAVE A BOARD THAT WOULD BE SWAYED BY THE CURRENT MINORITY OF FANS WHO WANT TOP GET RID OF WENGER we need to get rid of the negative minority imo
    COYG

  17. Adam says:

That £150-200 million sitting in the bank since last season must have devalued considerably, what with the Brexit drop in value and the fact of the new TV money causing fees to essentially double for top players.

  18. frednerk says:

    Have to laugh everytime I
    hear we are signing this
    defender.
Not sure if anyone on here
    watched the Royals.

    An Arab Jim..

    Yer..Mustafi Crapper.

  19. Wath says:

Well least someone has (blind) faith………… wonder if the Labrador typed that..! Minority… yeh right, keep dreaming..! Perhaps we need to0 get rid of the jcl’s who’ve turned up since Arsene FC was formed in 1996…!

  20. Micko says:

I’m lucky if I can manage to get outta bed in the mornings Wath.

The Jonny Evans link is comedy gold, made my day.

  21. Wath says:

I’m waiting for the Wes Brown links….. Long as you can manage to get outta bed and have a pint of the good stuff it’s all that matters…!

  22. Wath says:

Amazing how all other blogs are “full” of fans moaning and discussing our short comings yet they are in the minority…! contradictory somewhat…!

  23. Le Coq Monster says:

Oops !……..sorry thenry…………..I`m getting my Isco`s and Griezman`s mixed up ! hahaha………………….but hey, there“s been so many !………..I wanted Alexis when he was at Udinese….or was it Lazio or Napoli ?……….anyway, glad to see that Wenger finally listened to me !. hahaha

He certainly doesn`t do himself any favours by saying we nearely had a forward line of Ronaldo, Messi, Drogba, Ibrohimobitch, Ya Ya, etc` etc` , but instead we look back to the Jeffers, Gervinho`s, blah blah blah blah who in his talent spotting wisdom aquired !………….he`s so technically gifted and waits to a penalty shoot out to ask Kalstrom if he takes penalties ! hahahahahaha

  24. Le Coq Monster says:

Yeah Rico !…………………and I think he spotted Diaby when he was on a life support machine !……………….OK, that`s not fair as Abou was a very talented player, but you get my drift…….spending to much time watching NHS youtube instead of spending serious money on players who actually have a pulse !. 🙂

  25. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Afternoon Lovelies and Hunkies.

    Good read Rico Boss.

Just a little question…..Is it possible that only Rob Holding is of real quality from the championship down??? I feel there must be a RB, a LB, another CB or a DM down there. And I feel they are English as well.

  26. thenry says:

sorry about the typos but is that all you could take the piss out off.
blind faith no but a trust whilst he is our manager.
been a season ticket holder since the 80’s so have seen a lot of the ups and downs from neil to howe to graham but in all those times we the fans stuck behind the team players and manager unlike the ungrateful minority that we have today who know it all and believe everything written in the media.
for an unbiased view some of you should read the untold blog as well the usual know it all blogs that jump on the wenger out rehtoric

you will get your wish soon as i think Wenger will leave at the end of the year then maybe some of you will realise that we have pulling power because of wenger so unless we get a big name manager and there are not that many of them around it will become even more difficult for Arsenal to get players without paying the big money.

but you lot can carry on with your delusions that in your own little world what you and the bloggers say would work and be better then what the manager can do lol

  27. Hell Raising Devil says:

Thenry…..I have been a supporter since the 70’s. And all my family have been supporting Arsenal for far much longer.

Yes you might be right on some issues. However, I can assure you that here AW gets credit as well. When he does something which needs to be praised he gets it.

If you have been a true supporter since the 80’s, how come cant you see any similarities between AW as he has been in the last 6 years and the last three years of GG??? Remember the famous quote……If I find players of better quality then we have I will surely buy them. Both GG and now AW say it. And what has been uncovered on the former??? That he took bungs. And I can assure you that something fishy is going on at our club. Maybe time will tell us. Why does AW buy this player and not another one?? when the latter is of superior quality. Is the issue only money that the club might save or something else??

Thenry…..kindly don’t attack the people on this blog……just stay here, offer your two pence opinion and you will see after a few days how we are different to other blogs.

Just one thought……usually people recognize their ilk. Probably you recognized Rico as someone who is not fit to run a pub team simply because you are of the same level yourself.

  28. Kel says:

Great post Rico.. I haven’t been on in a while but then again not much has been going on with the club other than wenger talking bollocks..

Jonny Evans then lol well tbh in my opinion he is better than chambers and faster than mert.. now I much prefer someone like howdes or Varane etc.. but considering we’re skint beggars can’t be choosers. 😉

  29. potter says:

T henry , I will take you the 80’s and raise you 1956 when my first visit to Highbury took place. I was raised on stories of Ronnie Rooke who we had to buy from Fulham and saw my first heroes Joe Baker and George Eastham also bought in , one from Newcastle the other from Torino. So you see I learned as a kid that when you are in need you have to have to buy.
We have been close but not too close now for many seasons and as a club we are in a rut. Whether it’s the board ,the manager or the majority shareholder ,only time will tell exactly where the blame lies. I am suspicious of all three , I believe Kroenke’s only interest is in money, which is why he has never entertained Usmanos’s offers of cash. I believe the board are only interested in finance where a bit of footballing success is a bonus and I am afraid that the manager who once was way out in front as a revolutionary has been caught and overtaken . I look at his tactics and see flaws on the pitch and I see weaknesses in the squad and players that are not good enough to give us the push over the line. With the current set up we are destined to maintain the status quo but I fear that our immediate future will be to slip a little and instead of trumpeting the number of failed journeys into the champions league , the spin doctors will subtly switch it into the number of consecutive appearances in European competition.

  30. Bob John says:

Kev 10.16. Jimmy Rimmer and Brian Kidd saved us from relegation two years running in the mid 70’s. Rimmer in particular was a massive fans favourite. Don’t forget we also broke the transfer record to sign Alan Ball who promptly upset the dressing room who had just won the double by flashing his wage packet around!

  31. Wath says:

Spelling mistakes are nothing to worry about, I’ll take the piss out of anyone who comes on here with such an ignorant attitude when you know sweet FA about anyone on here thenry…! Funny that you think it acceptable to slag off a blogger when you know nothing yet get the hump about your spelling mistakes.

A season tkt holder since the 80’s… well least you ain’t a jcl none the less, when all you want to do is say people couldn’t manage a pub team to defend your opinion then sort of tells me your only happy dishing it out yet cannot have a proper discussion to back your opinion and as said think your idea of minority is pretty contradictory when the vast majority of fans are moaning about the fact we as a club and with a manager who seems loath to spend what we have in the bank… NOTE that doesn’t mean spend what we don’t have… huge difference.

Funny how you say we need a big name manager when Wenger leaves… what was Wenger when he arrived…? big name was he..? Seems to me that way to many scared of change as they’ve got used mediocrity..!

  32. Wath says:

Bob, I loved Jimmy Rimmer…. to be fair didn’t mind Brian Kidd either but yet again examples of us buying to just make do..! then again after the 71 dbl side we were pretty dire until the 3 yr FA Cup finals and look at those for crappy results…!

  33. Wath says:

As for fans sticking behind the players and manager I think you have forgotten who got rid of Neill and then Howe, you obviously wasn’t on Avenell rd outside the main entrance in 86…! The fans had had enough and many have now with the excuses from the club as to why they won’t spend the fortunes in the bank and why there are no players better than what we have. If our players are so good and cannot be improved upon how come we don’t win things year in year out..? No before you spout off about me only wanting to win that’s not my point…! It’s about being competitive enough to win but in response to the drivel from the manager about no plyers out there better than what we have the point is such that they cannot be that good otherwise we’d be winning things every single year..!

  34. Obi says:

Thenry all people has been saying is that the team as constitute right now needs improvements because we are lacking in quality and two depth, giving our history of injuries – AW as great as you proclaim him to be should recognize that. Moreover he himself has said that at minimum we need a defender and a striker but whomever come in “must add to the quality of the team”; but at the same time refuses to pay for proven quality. Thenry, case in point, we watched Elnery for 1 year and took another year to sign him, really? When even a pub team manager can realize we needed a DM/ B2B for 3 yrs. Be objective Thenry.

  35. frednerk says:

    The papers are saying
    to day
    That wenger is shocked,
    He says:
    How can Pogba be valued
    at..100million..it’s gone crazy.

Wonder what he think’s of the
    Premier Record..£5.136billion
    to be shared……Then

  36. Hell Raising Devil says:

Thenry….AW is so great that he gave us Almunia, Silvestre, Cygan, Stepanovs, Malz, Bischoff etc etc.

  37. rico says:

What a very good question. If Wenger was so good and the players are good enough too, why didn’t we win the league…?

Well, I think we all know the answer!

  38. beejay says:

    Thenry,
You must be deluded to think that posting opinions make one simply a talker or a non supporter. It is fans like yourself who expect players, coaches /managers or other entities at a club to feel that they are the only reason for the club’s existence. Arsene has made his contribution and it is time for him to move on. If you wait too long with a manager who has issues and not winning the ultimate prizes then he should be replaced.
Yes, we may or will have a period where we struggle with a new manager or coach but it is better to do so now while you have players on contract for a 2 to 3 year window. Stop going to the games and purchasing merchandise.
Teams with less clout make significant personnel changes who assist the teams that they play for without spending 100 million. It can be done but Arsene mucks around instead of making a considerable offer to get the deal completed.
You and the other Arsene /administrator apologists can have your opinions but calling names and stating your longevity as season ticket holders does not make you any more passionate than the non season ticket holders.
Let us hope that he gets his act together if not, he must go.
    Yes, he must go.
    Thanks for the memories.
Every team has periods of struggle so we won’t be the first. There were managers and owners before the incumbents so let’s get it done.
He ,Arsene , will not change his ways. Kroenke nor Gazidis give a damn about the fans so I say….wercs them.

  39. Micko says:

Not really sure why so many are having a pop at Thenry, if it wasn’t for Arsene we’d probably be languishing in the Championship with the likes of Newcastle, some fans are so fickle it makes you wanna puke !

I’m switching to Untold……..no offence rico.

  40. tsgh says:

    Micko, you made me chuckle…

Evenas is an odd one but he is not bad in my view if he can cut out the errors.. then again Williams and Tommy Vermalean made careers out of making errors leading to goals..

  41. ScottfromOz says:

People criticising someone for endorsing Untold, when they dare try and tell us how good LG is on occasions????
    Hilarious stuff lol

  42. Micko says:

Fcuk me, what have I gotta do to be taken seriously on here, stay up all night and watch a friendly, that’s what true supporters do isn’t it lol………time for my bunk, nite Gooners.

  43. steve H says:

We hear this every season, “we are active in the transfer market, we will only buy a player who improves our team”. I get fed up of it but it would be nice, just once, if Wenger would actually do it. Just defy Kroenke once, before he leaves, just nick Kroenke’s wallet and go on a spree.

  44. allezkev says:

Bob John, I wasn’t criticising Rimmer and Kidd, I think you missed the point…
I liked both players, but they were a cheap option, you could see the difference when Pat Jennings replaced Rimmer…
And Malcolm MacDonald eventually replaced Kidd, can you see my point?

  45. Marshall says:

Such non-objective Arse supporters makes me want to ‘find them and kill them’ (in Liam Neeson’s voice). Just cause you have been a fan since they invented the wheel doesn’t give you the right to shush people and personal attacks.

I must add though my pub team is always the one to beat, the throw up in the pitch so bad and soak it up, the other team has to forfeit like Mou did in China.

  46. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies.

another good win. Goals by HOLDING, Ox and Akpom did the trick.

did not see game but read positive comments on the web plus saw the highlights.

For the benefit of those who did not see game here you go……

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBv7xhI4ET0

I liked the combination of Chambers/Holding during the goal. Seems they are buddies besides team mates.

    Great goal by Ox.

And another goal by Akpom will do his confidence no harm

  47. rico says:

No offence taken Micko, I’ll see you on there… 😉

    Morning Devil, Marshall and all..

I personally think Pedro writes some great posts, it’s the comments section I find off…

  48. potter says:

Quite a physical game but then against a South American side that is to be expected. Only watched the 10 iute highlights on .com plus the 5 minute you tube but it seems that we were a little sloppy at the back to start and under pressure after their goal. Still good confidence boost for the players , Now all we need is a boost for the fans.

  49. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. Watched the highlights and liked The Ox goal. If he stays fit…..
You’re right about Le Grove. Some of the posts are good but the squabbling in the comments gives the whole thing a sense of chaos. Each to his own though.

  50. rico says:

    Morning Potter and Adam.

Agree re the defence, from the highlights we looked quite vulnerable too often. Super goal from OC but I doubt he’ll be allowed such freedom in the PL… lol

  51. frednerk says:

    Morning All
    Watched the game right through
    I’m a big fan of S Bould(player)
Not sure the coaching at the back
    has moved on.
Any coaches on here or fans
who like the coaching side may
have noticed why we keep getting
    caught out at the back.
The system for young players as
they reach 11 a side is to play
    from the back.
2 fullbacks up the field out wide
2 central defenders go into the
    fullback positions.
When options are closed to play out
the midfielder slots in for the keeper
to play from, when thats closed off
the keeper has to go long.
When Sagna was here the keeper
would play long for nod on.
    Good out ball.
These two preseason games have shown
    in my opinion.
That we need a leader for the back four
    someone to tell the fullbacks
its not on all the time to go bombing
    forward.
The mistakes at the back in the two
games were all caused by this out dated
    system.
On the plus side Granite played some great balls
through the lines and Santi was class.
Fans of the passing game will love
    Granite.He could be a leader

  52. Lee says:

Can you believe Wheelchair is injured again????

Untold’s comment section is a cracker too……pythagoras’s theorem has a lot to answer for!

  53. frednerk says:

    Doubt it rico
    Santi captain last night
I thought Cech would get it
    this season.
    Granite hopefully will demand the
    armband..He reminds me of a
    tougher version of Arteta.

  54. Hell Raising Devil says:

The fullbacks bombing forward should be controlled imo. That is why we are all the time caught out and our defence looks all at sea. Unless one of the three midfielders stays back to help then its useless keeping two CB to defend. at least one of the FB must stay back and even then one of the midfielders must not stray too much from the defence to join the attack.
