Morning all.
The news so many people probably never wanted to hear, came yesterday. The passing of the Queen is dreadfully sad news, but not even she could go on forever. A truly remarkable lady who will be missed.
Football kind of feels insignificant this morning but life goes on for all of us as the world doesn’t stop for broken hearts. I didn’t see the game but we won it 2-1. Eddie Nketiah and new summer signing Marquinhos scored the goals with the letter’s fine cross setting up Nketiah for the winner. From what I’ve read, the performance wasn’t brilliant but considering Mikel Arteta made seven changes, it’s hardly surprising. We got the three points and that’s all what matters sometimes.
PSV Eindhoven dropping two points in their match did us a favour whilst Man Utd losing later in the evening was hilarious.
Whether the weekend fixtures go ahead or not I don’t know but I’m sure the Queen herself would have wanted life to go on as normal because hers did, despite what was going on in her own life.
This will always make me smile.
What a sport her majesty was.
As Paddington said, thank you ma’am, for everything.
Morning Rico. Nice words about the Queen. I am sad today. She’s always been part of our lives in an entirely unique way. She represented the best of us.
A decent win yesterday.
Good morning Rico, as someone who has lived through the entirety of our late lamented Queen’s reign yesterday was one of the saddest of my own life.
I watched her coronation on the first television in our street, bought specially by my parents, a Phillips 12 inch black and white in a fake mahogany case.
A few days later, as a primary school pupil I was told to turn up in the morning with a clean white handkerchief.
The next day we were lead in a crocodile to a nearby road junction and there saw the Queen and Prince Phillip drive past in a big black car while we cheered and furiously waved our hankies.
Many years later, not long before my retirement I worked for a company which supplied catering a cleaning supplies to Sandringham house, one morning as I drove through the grounds to the kitchen courtyard a saw two riders approaching the lane from the side, I stopped to let them cross and the Queen who was accompanied by Zara Phillips, waved and mouthed “thank you” as they passed in front of my van. For me an unforgettable moment.
Morning Gooners, yes Rico a very thoughtful post, well summed up.
There’s a video on YouTube of the crowd at the Olympic Stadium where the West Ham fans spontaneously began to sing the national anthem during the minutes silence/applause, I thought it was an excellent response by the Hammers’ fans who are in the main working class Londoners and are probably proud of their heritage, a rarity in this country these days.
Of course you will get an assortment of wankers who’ll take cheap shots at a time like this when silence is the best policy, but then that’s because it’s really ‘all about them’…
I do wonder if the postponing the matches is the best policy as I’m sure the fans, well the majority, would prefer to show some sense of respect while the feelings of many are fresh.
Cicero, I’ve seen quite a few of the ‘royals’ whilst sitting in London traffic, I saw Lady Diana by the Aldwych many years ago now, that was before her police escort almost drove me off of the road to cut me off, the American tourists in the back thought it was so exciting I just thought the police were idiots.
Morning Adam, Cicero, Kev, all.
I’m sad too, very sad. The roads around here are quiet, cars going much slower than usual. I think the whole country is in a state of shock. One minute the Queen had mobility problems, the next she’s gone…
Yes Rico, it’s quiet around here as well, might be a coincidence but there does seem to be a reflective feeling in the air.
I think so too Kev. I’ve been out and about this morning and those I’ve talked to seem to be on autopilot, just going through the motions with their minds elsewhere.
My claim to fame is I’ve met and chatted with the now King. A long time ago though.
And now all the haters of the monarchy are beginning to show their hands . Facebook is getting infested with phrases like imperialism , colonialism and subjugation . It shows the divide in society in the U.K whether republican , royalist or whatever there is an air of respect but Charles is going to have a mighty job on his hands keeping things together as the divides become more obvious.
In many parts of the world she was not just the Queen of the U.K she was “” The Queen”” fullstop. KIng Charles 3rd has a hard act to follow.
Football this weekend has now been cancelled.
Potter, inevitable really. Trevor Sinclair kicked things off I suspect. What a p***k that man is.
Cicero, nice story. We were visiting my parents at Snettisham some years back for Christmas and went to Sandringham. Nice and close as whole family including Di, walked past to church.
Afternoon Rico and all
My condolences to the Royal family and everyone who likes the Royal Family.
I don’t know who Trevor Sinclair is but to take a cheap shot at any family in morning over the keyboard just shows how weak he is,
That says it all Geoff ‘Who is Trevor Sinclair?’
Trevor Sinclair legend in his own lunchtime
Shouldn’t “isn’t even a” be inserted between Sinclair and legend? 😉
According to the Independent the Queens funeral is set for Monday 19th Sept.
So I reckon after this weekends postponements that football will resume.
Afternoon Geoff.
I read that too about the 19th.
I was told that the Queen was an Arsenal supporter (and among her regrets are not being able to grant knighthood to Wenger, but having to dub Ferguson a knight).
Taking into account that she passed when Arsenal was sitting on top of the table, I think the boys should be proud.
Good on Brazil. Edu’s doing I wonder…
Arsenal trio Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes left out of Brazil’s World Cup warm-up squad.
Brazil take on Ghana and Tunisia in September ahead of Qatar World Cup; Manchester United’s Antony, Tottenham’s Richarlison and Liverpool’s Alisson, Fabninho and Roberto Firmino included.
Thank you Brazil…
I’ve got a feeling that despite all the chat that Arsenal will again go in for Douglas Luiz, might have to wait until next summer though if Villa don’t ‘wake up and smell the coffee in a January’ but he’s an Arteta ‘old boy’ from Man City and the perfect replacement for Elneny in his role.
We might end up with 6 Brazilians in the squad if we sign that guy direct from Brazil, forget his name, was it Costa?
We should really run out at the Emirates to a samba beat.
I like that idea Kev. Lol
New post up now
Samba de Janiero ??
