Arsenal loanee could save club millions…

Morning all.

Reiss Nelson, is it too late for him at Arsenal?

It’s never too late for any player to come back into the Arsenal squad in my opinion and Nelson is no different. I’ve never read anything negative about him as a person and after a few years of struggling to get his footballing career going, he’s doing very well Feyenoord. He’s setting up goals as well as scoring them. He’s just 22 years old so far from being at his peak.

Reiss came through the academy so he’s one of our own but he has just one year left on his contract so it’s decision time for him and for Arsenal.

Considering Nicolas Pepe hasn’t managed to make an Arsenal appearance for what seems like months, I think we can assume his career in north London is coming to an end this summer so might the door open for Reiss Nelson if Pepe is sold?

The Dutch League isn’t the Premier League by any means but that alone is not reason to dismiss how he’s being doing on loan, after all, a lot of players come to the Premier League from ‘weaker’ League’s but many of them enjoy a successful career so why shouldn’t Nelson?

He certainly looks more mature, stronger and he’s duel footed. Even from that short clip, it’s clear to see his defensive work has greatly improved.

I’ve no idea how much money the club have to spend on new players this summer but I think we’d all agree that the priority as far as positions go, is a scorer of goals and a midfielder. With a bottomless money pot, I’m sure we’d be hoping for more additions but not scoring enough goals from the chances we create has been our main problem in my opinion. Another 20 goals scored this season and I think we’d have already secured 4th place at least. Kane and Son are the only reason Totts are even in the chase for top four but then the same could be said of any club which has a high scoring player or two in their squad. Had Eddie Nketiah started the season instead of ending it, perhaps he’d be well into double figures by now. If’s and but’s though, are pointless.

Not every young player who comes through the academy is going to play for a club at the highest level in the game and very few who’ve left Arsenal have gone on to play for clubs better than Arsenal. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any, not even in the years when the club have been struggling, but even so, I don’t think Arsenal can afford to let younger players go until they’ve really had a go at proving themselves. Whether that’s whilst out on loan or in the domestic and European Cups matters not really. If they’re not right for Arsenal then so be it, but at least get a fee for them when they go.

If Nketiah was being sold this summer with two years on his contract, Arsenal would be in a position to demand a £20 million odd transfer fee I’m sure. More possibly when one considers how much Newcastle paid for Joe Willock and that was before they were rich.

As for Reiss Nelson, I’d like to see him come back, have a strong pre-season, sign a contract extension and then see what he can do for the team.

With European football pretty much secured for next season, I think we’ll need players like him.

See you in the comments.

Morning All, thanks for the post Rico.

That snapshot of Reiss Nelson saw him operating mainly down the left in the Martinelli role of inside forward where he could come inside onto his right foot but I’m sure he could play on the right. I guess if funds are in short supply and Arsenal get an acceptable offer for Nicolas Pepe then Arteta could use Nelson as cover for Saka?

There was Ashley although that’s more complicated but I suppose one that sticks out is Andy Cole who had quie a goalscoring effect for Newcastle and Man Utd . To go up from us there are probably only a few teams in the uk and a couple in each of the top European leagues .
Szczęsny came to us at 15 years old and is now at Juventus , and Malen came at a similar age now with Borrusia Dortmund and Anelka came young and had a chequered career having bought our new training ground.
Other than that I can’t think of too many others either.

Reiss Nelson ? Why not ? He knows the players , he won’t have that settling in period and has always looked to be a good prospect and has shown a wiilingness to go and try to improve

. A bit of family silver to keep I would think.

  3. allezkev says:

Currently Reiss Nelson has played 25 times for Feyenoord (18 Eredivisie) and scored 3 goals (1 Eredivisie).

His career at Arsenal in total is 48 apps (23 EPL) with 4 goals (1 EPL).

    His most productive was under Nagelsman at Hoffenheim in 2018/19 where he made;
29 apps (23 Bundesliga) and scored 7 goals (7 Bundesliga).

I have always thought that Nelson was an unpolished gem. He has the skill, the desire and hopefully the attitude to do really well. I for one wish him well at what ever destination he lands at for next season. With European football almost in the bag for next season, the already thin squad would benefit from some extra padding. No disrespect to Nelson, I think he can be a fantastic footballer if given the nod by Arteta.

  5. rico says:

That’s the bonus with Nelson Kev, back up on both sides of the pitch. At least let’s see him in pre season before letting him go.

  6. potter says:

At 22 I would think that may well be described as doing his apprenticeship , now is the time to find out what he has in the one year left . He can’t be less use than Pepe who , although I like, seems to be way out of favour with Arteta.

  7. rico says:

Can’t believe I forgot Cole Potter, he has to be the worst we allowed to leave, and all for a few quid.

It’s a win win imo to extend Nelson’s contract.

  8. rico says:

Lansera, me too. When one thinks how small our squad is, and with Pepe being out of Arteta’s plans, we could have done with him now but, he’s benefiting more from being out on loan.

  9. rico says:

Xav, I don’t count Gnabry, he might have been signed young but he’s not come through the age groups at Arsenal.

  10. potter says:

Mixed messages on Saliba , one day he wants to force his way into the Arsenal then Marseiile have a little chat and next day he wants to stay in France.

  11. allezkev says:

Saliba is an interesting one, the different comments and views we see coming out from his camp, be it him, his agent or Marseilles are almost akin to the daily nonsense we used to get from Dr of Spin Sogut as Ozil wound down his discredited finale at Arsenal.

It’s almost becoming comical and makes you realise how much better it is with our present squad where everyone is focused and on the same page.

A few weeks ago I was quite looking forward to William rejoining the Arsenal group and for what he could bring to the squad in terms of strength in depth and variety of style but now I’m not so sure, I mean would he be a disruptive influence in the squad if he’s not a starter for example?

Would he or his advisors etc become a source of damaging and disruptive rumours to the Press and haven’t we really had enough of that already from the other ‘Dickheads’ who have been finally moved on?

It would be interesting in the summer to see the kind of values put on him by interested parties if it seemed as if he was available and would we even get our money back in a deflated market if he was up for sale?

Despite all the ‘talk’ on Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok et al I’d be amazed if we got offered a lot more than the £27m we paid for him…

  12. rico says:

Absolutely agree Kev, if his heart is not 100% with Arsenal, sell him. This group seems too settled and happy together, the last thing it needs is a fly in the ointment.

  13. Aussie Geoff says:

    Morning Rico and all
I recon Saliba and Nelson will both go, I can’t see Arteta promising them game time.
The interesting one will be pepe and what to do with him if no one is interested in buying him.

  14. allezkev says:

That’s how it appears to me Rico, maybe a case of Saliba and Co overplaying their hand?

The transfer winding-up is getting up to speed as rumours of the price City will want for Jesus is quickly followed by the ‘shocking news’ that City now want to keep the player… 😴😴😴

We’ve got the best part of 4 months of this bollocks to put up with, no doubt Football.London will be posting 40 or 50 contradictory post every day closely following JustArsenalNews, it gets worse every year God help us, roll on August 31st

  15. rico says:

    Good old player power Kev.

I might avoid NN from the end of the season until the transfer window shuts. 😂

  16. Pete the Thirst says:

I think Nelson could fill a hole, but he’s going to be a long way down the pecking order. He’s far behind Saka and Martinelli at present.

Having seen him play a few times he is clearly very pacey, but he lacked control. He seem much better on his right foot.

On balance I think he’ll be shipped out.

  17. rico says:

I get that but if Pepe goes, Saka and Martinelli can’t play 50-60 matches in a season. What makes more sense, keeping Nelson, promoting another young player, or spending money on a player when whatever money we do have which I imagine won’t be a huge amount, needs going on a striker, two if Eddie leaves and a midfielder.

  18. Rick says:

    Afternoon Rico and the House.
Many thanks for some very good posts during the last few weeks Rico
The ones this week ( and Kevs comments) about Eddy and Reiss are top Class.
As someone who has been watching Reiss since he was 14 I honestly think he is the the best young player that I have seen come out of Hale End
Watching highlights of how they are playing at the moment I think they are starting to show the form they had in the 2017-2018 season when they were the main reason our boys won the U23 league.
In my opinion he could be the player to stand in for Odegard should he get injured
as I see him more as a no 8 or no10 and not a winger
I live in hope that I will see Eddy and Reiss playing together in the P/L then you will all see just how good they are together
I allso feel we should keep Elneny we will need him in Europe next year

  19. Rick says:

Sorry Rico I have I have made a mess of things again
    Can you check moderation.
I hope you will excuse my mistakes
I am a little flusted at the moment .
its my Birthday tomorrow and I have allready started to celibrate

  20. rico says:

    Afternoon Rick, thank you.

I could think of nothing better than seeing Nketiah, Nelson, Saka and ESR in the same Arsenal team.

  21. Pete the Thirst says:

    Hi Rico

Are you hoisting the flag for Nelson? Does he deserve a column?

I know there’s a lot on here from Norfolk; but it’s a bit one eyed in my opinion.

    🏴‍☠️

  22. rico says:

Hi Pete, ha ha but no. I just get a lot of enjoyment from seeing our youngsters get as much of a chance as the guys we sign from overseas. On the flip side, I find it frustrating to see players continually played regardless of their performances.

  23. devilgunner says:

    coooqueliiiinnnnnnnnn

Francis has just given Villareal a 2nd goal

    Good evening Rico and all

  24. RicK says:

    Pete,
are you saying those who come from Norfolk are one eyed
Rico Kev and I donot live there.

  25. allezkev says:

I’m glad that Liverpool won because they’ll be flying when Tottenham visit.

    Needs must Rico

  26. Aussie Geoff says:

Reiss nelson is nearly 23 years old if he comes back and is way down the pecking order then why not sell him and use the money towards a striker and then promote another younger player around 18 years old

  27. rico says:

We’d get a pittance for him Geoff with just one year left on his contract.

I’m not for one suggesting he’d be the answer to replacing Pepe but until he gets a chance, we’ll never know. Until he’s at another club, and then we’ll all moan because the club let him go.

  28. Aussie Geoff says:

Rico the main reason why I would sell Nelson is that Arteta has had time to bring him back but has chose not to and it sounds like we have a few younger one’s that may be ready to take the next step. I feel sorry for pepe as you can see the talent is there but for some reason he just can’t take the next step.

  29. Cicero says:

Geoff, Pepe undoubtedly has talent but I don’t think he can cope with the physicality of the Premiership. We’ll be lucky to get 50% of what we paid for him. However, that loss could be offset by replacing him with Nelson, and we would save a bit more on wages too.
