Arsenal forced to U-turn? Willian gone, Bellerin next..

Morning all.

To think an Arsenal player feels the need to post the above on social media would have once been deemed ridiculous but that’s what AMN did yesterday. He wants to play football and if he were honest, I suspect he wants to play for Arsenal but it seems the chance of that happening on a regular basis are slim to none.  What’s odd though is that if he does go to Everton by 11pm tonight, he’ll be used as a right-back according to Sky Sports. Both they and The Athletic suggest AMN wants to play at right-back and wants to be at The World Cup with England, challenging Walker for that spot. If true, then let him take that position at Arsenal because it makes sense.

Mikel Arteta needs to put his arm around AMN shoulder, tell him how important he is and draw a line under the past. Tell him that his “i” should have been an “I”.

Hector Bellerin is reportedly close to saying goodbye to Arsenal as a move to Real Betis is all but done according to the back pages. Good luck to him I say.

Willian has left the club by mutual consent. Credit where it’s due eh, this move didn’t work out for either party but instead of putting money before the game, he cancelled his contract and left, saving the club £20 million odd in wages.

Miguel Azeez has left the club too but only on loan with Portsmouth for a season. Give it a year of playing regular football and he’ll be a much improved and more experienced player too. Trouble is, these guys get used to playing each week and they get the bug. Seldom do they want to sit on the bench afterwards. Footballers who are in the game because they love it, just want to play and a lot of the time, they possibly don’t care who they play for.

Eddie Nketiah was all set to leave this summer it seemed with Palace his likely destination. Well, that seems to have changed as Patrick Vieira’s club have turned to someone else. What next for Eddie? Another year of warming the Arsenal bench unless things change in the next few hours or Arteta liked what he saw from him in pre-season.

It’s easy to suggest Nketiah and AMN aren’t the kind of players who’ll take Arsenal to the next level but aren’t they both of a similar profile to who the club have added to the squad this summer?

Also, what is the next level Arsenal are striving for? What are the expectations the board have of Mikel Arteta? Premier League survival, top four, top six or just top half of the table? What next level does Mikel Arteta honestly believe he can take us to I wonder. He talks a great game, most managers do but as yet, what plays out on the pitch is pretty grim. In fact we’re now worse than we were on the day Mikel took the job.

What happened to the doggedness Arsenal showed against Man City in the FA Cup semi final in 2019 and the win over Chelsea in the Final? We didn’t have Ben White, Sambi Lokonga, Thomas Partey etc then.

Martinez
Holding Luiz Tierney
Bellerin Ceballos Xhaka Maitland-Niles
Pepe Lacazette Aubameyang

The substitutes that day, Sokratis, Nketiah and Kolasinac.

Barring Martinez, Luiz and Ceballos, all the players who started that Cup Final are still at the club.

Weren’t Arsenal supposed to build on that success? We’d managed to secure a spot into the Europa League only to get knocked out by an Unai Emery team in the semi-final after Mikel decided that lining up without an out an out striker in the team was a good idea. Then, after finishing 8th, there was no European football for Arsenal for the first time in years.

That’s not progress is it?

Replacing such a long standing manager as Arsene Wenger was, has proved to be more difficult than perhaps you/I thought but then Man Utd suffered similar fate when replacing Fergie. Moyes, Giggs, van Gaal, Mourhino and now Solskjaer. So by that reckoning, Arsenal have three more managers to try at least. I jest of course.

What’s important for any club is that the board identify when enough is enough. Arsenal’s board aren’t renowned for being quick off for mark when it comes to making decisions though. Arsene Wenger was allowed to drift along, probably because he always managed to get us into the Champions League and Unai Emery too was probably afforded too much time and now here we are again, wondering if it’s time for another change in manager. Some of us no doubt think it is. Lose on the 26th September and Mikel Arteta is going to wish the Emirates turf would open up and swallow him whole. Not even Unai Emery lost that fixture.

Headlines are going around which suggest Marc Overmars wants a return to his old club and he wants to replace Edu.

Perhaps he could bring the Ajax manager with him.

See you in the the comments.

Hat off for willian to cancel his contract and go to where he likes.
He showed class and the difference between him and this snake who pump our club even though he went to his boyhood club until the last penny was paid to him till June 2021.
Hope Arsenal stop to contract old player with big wages as it’s doing us lot of pains and the club is late in there plan to go back to where we were.

  2. Bradley says:

Let’s hope a RB comes in. As we are very poor in that department with Cedric, Chambers and AMN.
Would think we’re short a CM but seriously doubt one will be coming in.

  3. Aussie Geoff says:

Were did all this money Arteta has now come from? Was it (A) from Stan Kroenke or (B) From all the staff and employees in the back Ground that have been sacked. It seem that The owners are backing Arteta and Edu no matter what.
I wish the owners would come out and say what the minimum finishing position on the ladder is required from Arteta this year or else it seem that they may have fallen into their old ways of not caring about the club.

  4. rico says:

AMN forced to train alone if NN headlines are to be believed. I guess he’s in the naughty corner after his social media post.

    A loan I suspect Geoff.

  5. andrewh1313 says:

Morning rico, house. Massive respect to Willian, instead of a sour taste in my mouth, I will now remember the great free kick goal! Ok, it’s a shame there were not half a dozen more like that, but I fully expected Arsenal to have to compromise and pay half his 2 years wages. What a star, brings back some faith amongst the money grabbers.

Right back is now serious, if only we had a Tierney both sides. Trippier would be an answer in the short term, but we have rightly moved away from high contract older players. Maybe this could work where others haven’t?

I had high hopes of Chambers, mainly as a CB as he’s too slow out wide, and gets booked grabbing on to wingers shirts as they go past. But he doesn’t seem to be taking his chance, I fear another Jenkinson, immensely likeable but not the standard to get us top six or even close.

AMN I never know, but be surprised if Arteta forgives based on his recent actions. Just what Arsenal didn’t need as the press love it, but we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. Is that Amazon documentary recording all this?!!

  6. rico says:

Morning Andrew, agree re Willian but apparently he’s walking away without a penny more from the club. I’m starting to wonder if he was the real problem with his performances or there are other issues which have contributed.

Even Tierney doesn’t look the same player he did last season. In fact, not many do. AMN was naive to post what he did but desperation makes people do crazy things. He clearly wants to just get out of Arsenal.

  7. Adam says:

Morning Rico. The transfer window has proved something of a distraction and my feeling is that few of the potential outs have shown enough quality when given a chance. Ainsley looked like he was really on the up a while ago and then a series of zero-concentration, tired performances saw him fall back. The fact that we don’t have a bidding war for him is down to him. Do your talking on the pitch and not on social media. Likewise Eddie. If you can’t step up and take your chances then you might get caught in limbo. I don’t think that Mikel has really helped the player or the club in these cases.
The bigger and by far the most vital and critical question lies in the board’s decision regarding Mikel. By any judgement it looks to me like he’s done at Arsenal. The list of bad decisions stretches way back and I can’t see, after the Man City disaster, that this trend has ended so I think we can look forward to more bizarro stuff in the future. Some people I know are still trotting out the give-him-time mantra but I have yet to hear a coherent argument as to why he should stay.
The status of the club is suffering right now. From being a top club we are now nothing more than a laughing stock who pay big wages and that has far, far reaching conclusions. The decline has been alarming. Yes, it’s a bad, bad situation and it needs decisive action from the Kroenkes and it needs it right now. Not in 6 games time.
When your great friend Pep Guardiola destroys you on the pitch and makes you look a total mug and then gets up and starts a diatribe that you are a great manager and that the club and fans should give you time, then you should know you are done. Pep looks after Pep.
3 games, 3 losses, zero points, zero goals tells its own story.

  8. rico says:

Arsenal could make a move for Lille defender Zeki Celik today, with Hector Bellerin’s exit impending, so say the Daily Express.

    Roll on 11pm 😀

  9. potter says:

I guess that AMN’s comments are more about communication than anything else.. It sounds to me that he is really saying ” will someone please tell me what is going on “.
If I am staying , do I play ? and if I am not playing Where do I go ? One thing is certain he isn’t happy sitting around doing nothing and watching his career drift into oblivion.

On the subject of progress . Following Wenger if KSE have made an assessment and a plan it has not been obvious to most of us peering through our particular hole in the fence . Chief executives , coaches , directors , doctors , sports scientists and of course managers and players have come and gone . There has been no stability at any level in the club , it’s been like the blind leading the deaf and dumb , perhaps pinball is more suited than football at present and certainly as proven by Ozil , Saliba and Guendouzi’s comments plus a few more he has made enemies on the way.

The question is do we stick or twist , Is the Arteta /Edu combination the right one or do we throw our hand in ,cash our chips and look to Overmars and a few other candidates to sort this club out ?

I don’t know and I doubt that they do either.

  10. andrewh1313 says:

If we take Willian’s comments at face value, and we deserve to after his actions, then I too was wondering if behind the scenes events stopped him performing. Such a shame. Oh to be a fly on the wall.

  11. potter says:

Adam , I have been doing a lot of driving lately and am totally fed up with The Arsenal being the butt of jokes not just in sports programmes but even in News bulletins and weather forecasts.
There is a lot of humble pie building up should we get out of this malaise but what is considered as progress now ? Because we are flat bottomed and going nowhere.at the moment. Is mid table considered to be going in the right direction ?

  12. rico says:

Morning Adam, from the outside it does appear that something is very wrong at the club. The players looked broken after 3 matches. They play like they either haven’t a clue or are totally confused. A new season should imo, always be a new start and for that reason, I hoped Eddie and AMN would have a new start. Eddie looked great in pre season imo, he’s bulked up, looks stronger and more focused.

I’ve no idea what will happen over the next few weeks or months but I’ve a feeling Mikel will orchestrate his own exit by results/performances.

  13. rico says:

If that’s the case Potter, doesn’t it tell a big story about the lack of leadership and direction the club have? Transfers both in and out should have been decided, concluded even, long before a deadline day eve. The club are dealing with human beings after all and don’t we all want to know where we’ll be in a week’s time?

  14. Aussie Geoff says:

Arteta blocks a player from leaving then block him from training with the senior squad, why would anyone want to play under Arteta when he does things like that.

As I said yesterday this club has no game plan on or off the pitch

  15. andrewh1313 says:

Arsenal interested in Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu for £19.8 million. Not apparently known for wing play but solid and can play CB.

  16. Cicero says:

Takehiro Tomiyasu 22 year old centre/right back €23 million. If nothing else he’ll sell a few shirts in Japan.

  17. Wavy says:

    Morning all

Rico it would seem, according to the Guardian that we may have a new versatile
Japanese rb and Bellerin is off to Betis! I wonder if either of them know how the future will turn out

“Tomiyasu is one of Japan’s best young prospects,” tweets Leo Thazane. “There has been loads of praise for Kubo (and rightfully so) but Tomiyasu is the standout player in the Japanese defence and one to keep an eye on. He’s best played at right-back but can cover for centre-back too.”

Thanks for that – Arsenal will need him to get going right away”

They seem to suggest he’s already signed. Another defender! How we need more! What we really need is a PLAN! A strategy. A cunning plan!
Sadly I don’t think we have one, what we do have is a selection of quite good defenders who have played quite well in the past but don’t know how to perform presently. Hence our woeful position in the league. Probably what we don’t want is another body running around like a headless chicken with no plan imprinted in his brain nor anybody else’s either!

    Ho hum

  18. Sue says:

Afternoon Rico! Runarsson to OH Leuven..
I’ve no idea what the guy from Bologna is like (panic buy?! 🙈)
I hope AMN gets his move..

  19. Cicero says:

Arteta had a plan when he first arrived, turn Arsenal into a City clone. His problem was, and is, the players were not fitted to his style and he hadn’t the nous to recognise that fact. Nor did have the experience to adapt his style to better suit the players he had.

  20. Aussie Geoff says:

Cicero I read Nelson is going out on loan for 12 months

I Hope this Japanese player we are looking at can get a work visa, If I am not mistaken didn’t Wenger buy a Asian player once before but he was never given a work visa and had to go straight out on loan.

  21. Devilgunner says:

He has gone on a one year loan. Hopefully after signing a contract to protect him and the club

My take on Arteta after thinking about it and reading some of the comments we doubting housers make…..

We all seem to agree that Arteta had a plan when he came….and rightly so. He had to utilise the players he had with the system known to them. Last season was the season in which Arteta tried to implement the style he wanted with the players at his disposal. However that was found to be impossible. So this summer, as Kev many times pointed out, was the transfer window which decides everything…..and Arteta had a choice…….continue with his plan to play 4-3-3 with the players at his disposal and buy not more than 3 players maximum, OR, tell every player who did not fit in his style that they had to find another club. Hence, the pathetic displays we have seen this season in the first three games. The players who were told they had to leave were not interested in playing while those who were wanted were at a cross roads hence the diatribe we had on show.

AW used to say that in any window no more than 3 players should be bought. And he was right.

However, with the players we had that was impossible….we would have spent the next 5 years in transition. So what do Arteta and the club decide…..wholesale changes to the playing staff. Infact with Takehiro that will be something around 6 or 7 players in??? And I feel that by this evening we will be getting around 1 or 2 more.

Aouar has been constantly mentioned on Instagram and certain websites. so watch this space.

I still want to see DCL or Wout Weghorst spearheading our attack.

Am I excited by Tomiyasu Takehiro??? I only saw him twice. And he is solid. However, defensive coaching in Italy is a far away method from England. The only British coach I have known to practice Italian style defending has produced the best defensive unit ever seen in England. And he was our GG. The rest?? I prefer not to comment.

  22. rico says:

Afternoon Sue, for AMN, yes, for Arsenal, I wish he’d stay and play but with the man from japan potentially arriving, I think AMN will leave before the deadline.

  23. Devilgunner says:

The situation with AMN is rather a sad one I feel. However, it might be that the culture at the club was something that Arteta wanted to change at all cost.

Right now that is making Arteta appear as the villain. Let’s compare this situation to a prison in which the prisoners were just kept in…otherwise they were free to do whatever they wanted. Their punishment was just to be inside. However, the Goverment wanted to change the culture of the prison and its methods, and employs a colonel to run the prison in a military style disciplinary camp. Obviously this is going to cause an uproar with several prisoners and a number of NGO’s crying foul.

Same with the players. Personally I feel that Arteta wants those players whose heart and attitude are not in it. And yes…many here who said that there must be something in communication with AMN are right. Maybe, like Guendouzi, he said something to Arteta and his punishment was to be expelled from the team training.

We must remember one thing….Arteta was here as a player himself. so he knows certain players, he knows the culture, he knows how the club works. And I believe that he told the board what was wrong and how to put it right. I feel that the board will stand by him and know that this drastic measure is needed. and that such drastic measures will have an effect on results. and they are prepared to stand by him.

It will take time. And time will tell whether Arteta has been a good choice.

  24. Sue says:

Feel for him, Rico, now being made to train away from the first team. As soon as I saw what he’d put on social media, knew he was in trouble!
Apparently Lacazette has no plans on extending; his deal expires next summer…

  25. potter says:

“I think Willian did the right thing, he went for the project and the project wasn’t there.

“Unfortunately, I’d have to say, which player has moved to Arsenal that has not been a disaster in the last couple of years? That one I speak as a fan.

    Quote Kia Joorabchian

  26. rico says:

As do I Sue. What the heck is going on at the club I wonder.

Maybe we don’t want to sell to Everton as they’re a rival for the top half of the table. 😂

  27. rico says:

“We must remember one thing….Arteta was here as a player himself. so he knows certain players, he knows the culture, he knows how the club works“

You make a good point Devil but you’d think he’d deal with things a little better than what we’re led to believe.

  28. rico says:

That’s quite a statement from Kia and little different to what many of have been wondering. What is the project? I sure can’t see it.

  29. Devilgunner says:

he has decided on the drastic action. One swish of the guillotine and that severs the head.

So instead of taking the gradual process he just decides to do it in the hard way, one swift blow that Daenerys Targaryen would have been proud of

  30. Adam says:

Yes, Kia is an impartial player in all this isn’t he?
Get Arteta out along with Edu and Vinai and let’s make a fresh start with some hardened professional football men as opposed to this bunch of shysters. If we do that we might still achieve something this season.

  31. Cicero says:

Impartial/ Adam, was it not Joorabchian who lumbered us with Willian, Cedric and a few others. Plus isn’t he Edu’s agent too?

  32. Adam says:

Cicero. I was being cynical. That bloke should be nowhere near the club let alone a big mate, advisor and presumably a consultant of senior management.

  33. Aussie Geoff says:

Arteta needs to learn man management skills, the way he treats players I can see the players revolt against him

  34. Aussie Geoff says:

Let’s hope we can do some good business in the next few hours.

It’s been a long sad day in our family today, keep safe every one

  35. potter says:

Spurs apparently have offered Aurier to Betiswith incentives to try and stop Bellerin going there so that they can make room for Emerson.
Which in turn either exiles one of our players if Tomiyasu joins or it’s all off .
Got to love transfer deadline day .
    NOT.

  36. Wavy says:

Got to be Bellerin to Betis he’s younger for a start only makes a costly ricket every third game as apprised to Aurier who reliably drops a bollock every game assuming he remains on the pitch for 90 minutes and doesn’t find himself having another exclusive early bath on his own, and he’s 3 years older!

    I rest my case

  37. Devilgunner says:

Bellerin has done medical and will go loan but without option to buy. In return Arsenal will not have anything to do with his wages….it’s all on Betis

  38. Sue says:

Bloody hell, now apparently AMN is staying as he’s part of MA’s plans this season 🤷‍♀️
    You couldn’t make it up!!

  39. Cicero says:

So we now have three right backs Tomiyasu, Cedric and Chambers. Three left backs Tierney, Tavares and Kolasinac. Four central defenders Holding, White, Mari and Gabriel.

Arteta has to work out how to use them, not just perm any four from ten.

  40. Wavy says:

His plans to destroy him! Ffs……which way is the wind blowing?
MA needs to be sent on s course for man management, ‘cos from where I’m watching his skills in that aspect of his job is more full of holes than our leaky defence!

You’re right Sue, you just couldn’t make it up. Poor AMN he’s in for another season full of disappointments imo.

  41. Devilgunner says:

ITs one of two options Wavy….either MA has a disciplined hand and is expecting everyone to be on board and accept his dictatorial rule OR else as you point out he needs to be sent on s course for man management

I think its more of the former imo. He wants to change the culture and its either you adapt and accept the discipline as he deems it or you are frozen out

    Time will tell

  42. Devilgunner says:

Wvy…I dont think he plans to destroy him. That is how we might see it from the outside. But we do not know what is going on behind the scenes.

As I pointed out…..Arteta seems determined to wipe out the lassez faire culture in the club. And he is doing it with an iron fist. Maybe some will not buy into it and this will make him seem as if he is a dictator or impossible to manage. He will bear the brunt….but mark my words if the players buy into it he will succeed.

As I keep on saying….time will tell us what we need to know.

  43. rico says:

Just hope the clear the air talks with AMN really have cleared the air. No one wins if there is an atmosphere between the two of them.

  44. Cicero says:

With Xhaka banned AMN can play alongside Lakonga in a midfield defensive role. Perhaps that will make both him and Arteta happy, then they can become best friends. 😉

  45. allezkev says:

Still no confirmation on Bellerin to Betis or Tomiyasu to Arsenal, so no doubt it’ll drag on beyond 11pm as it always does with Arsenal…. 😴😴😴

I did read something about the recent transfer break downs concerning Maitland Niles and it seems that the sticking point in his last three prospective transfers have been the financial demands of his agent…

  46. allezkev says:

15 foreign and 6 English in our squad of 21, a bit of a difference from a year ago.

Gotta credit the club for moving on as many big earners as they have in the last 12 months.

  47. Bradley says:

If Devil is right, I don’t think it’s a great management style without any credentials to your name but expecting respect from all the players. Alienating players, bringing back players not wanted at the club, condoning Xhaka’s actions with a pat on the back and so many instructions, half don’t even understand what is required of them. All the wrong messages to the youth he wants to fill the team with.
He has a week to work with most of them, let’s hope he has an idea for the Norwich game.

  48. Devilgunner says:

    Good morning Rico and all

Bradley…I agree with you that respect should be earned.

However, one has to keep in mind that these players are all professionals. And they earn a lot of money. Surely they are not in a position to start from scratch with regards orders and respect. Yes they are human beings as well. But if you are in the team you do your job. Lowering the standards you are expected to play at just because you dont agree with your coach is simply not acceptable. Let’s take the case between Tierney and Martinelli. KT03 does not pass the ball to Martinelli. That has been observed this season and also last season there was hint of it. Martinelli is subbed and lo and behold KT03 begins putting the ball at the subs’ feet. That in my opinion is very unprofessional. Yes i agree that they are human beings and have their emotions etc but in this situation you are failing the team and the club which pays your wages.

Yes his man management style may need to change or be made better, but at the end of the day the players we have are not playing at that level for no reason. Yes there are issues and clashes…that is evident. But good players dont come bad players overnight. And maybe that is why there are wholesale changes going through at the club….because Arsenal (at the moment…in the future it may change) are simply going against the trend….clubs prefer to sack one person, ie the manager instead of changing the whole team or a number of players. What we are seeing is Arsenal preferring to change the team for just one man. And that, in my whole life of football, is the first I have seen a club do.

Next game against Norwich, might well see the team line up as follows…..

    Ramsdale
    Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney
    Lokonga, Partey
    Saka, Odegaard, ESR,
    Auba

Subs….Leno, Chambers, Tavares, Laca, Balogun, Holding, AMN, Martinelli, Pepe

With the exception of Auba and Tierney the rest of the first 11 are all Arteta signings. That is his team. We can only wait and see how that team pans out. I will not say….watch the team struggle OR watch the team play fantastic football. But I presume the attitude of those players will be a lot different than the first three games

I may be mistaken. But I may also be right.

  49. Aussie Geoff says:

Devil I agree in part that the players are paid to do a job yes that’s correct. But how can players do their job properly when the coach does not have a game plan or they question him over something and wind up getting dropped for months for asking questions.

A good/respected coach will all ways get the best out of any player a crap coach will not get anything out of any player.

  50. Devilgunner says:

    yes you are right.

But we dont know what happens behind the scenes. We do not know in what way they questioned him over something. I can say ‘you are not telling the truth, but I can equally say ‘you are a liar’ Same thing no. But said in a different way. Maybe he made his own ground rules and they were expected to follow. Challenge that and you are out.

AW was averse to smoking. Szcezsney was caught smoking once in the bathroom….and he was out quicker than a reflex save, Meanwhile we were lumbered up with Cech.

Certain issues that we are grumbling upon now are the same issues we grumbled under Emery, the same issues we grumbled about under AW. The thing is…..I might be wrong here….but as I said…Arteta dealt with it severely in one fell swoop and he is appearing as the baddie one.

If a thing is good DO IT even if no one agrees or does it.
And if a thing is bad DONT DO IT even if everyone agrees about it or does it
    That is called integrity

  51. Devilgunner says:

we can only comment from out here. we are not in the situation or in the club. Neither we are observing what is going on inside the corridors.

So we can only judge or try to guess.

I prefer to comment on how the transfer window has gone

Am I satisfied? No. Because I wanted Arsenal to buy different players. I wanted to clear all the decks from the old players and start afresh. Was it possible? I know that it was not possible. But still.

I still blame the club hierarchy though. Because had I been the chairman, and I am sure most of us here would have done the same, I would have laid down my own set of rules of what I wanted the club to follow. I am more than 100% sure that Kroenke did not. He just let the things run as they were going. I would have sought to give the club a culture and identity. And each and every signing has to be done not with the agent in mind but with the ethos of the club. I dont give a F whether Joorabchian wanted us to give Willian a contract. If he did not fit in with the ethos of the club I am sorry. the club is not in business to do favours to others. There are other fish in the whole wide world and I am sure that I will find players who fit in with the club ethos and culture.

And then make sure that the club keeps those standards

We had them once. But they deteriorated and were taken for granted.

Time for that discipline to come back

  52. Adam says:

Morning Rico. Geoff, I think that you’re close to the truth there. If everyone at the club does their job then things should be ok.
Things are going as badly as I can remember right now. Perhaps the skills on the pitch are there but we live in a tactical era and our tactics have been exposed as being hopeless and completely out of touch with anything approaching footballing reality.
We are getting killed on the pitch and the fans are understandably reacting because they can see what’s happening and they know things are not right.
More often than not, the obvious is true.

  53. rico says:

    Morning Devil, Geoff, Adam, all.

I too think Geoff has hit the nail on the head. Look around the League and we’ll see many clubs with squads not as good as ours and certainly not as deep yet what we often see when they come up against Arsenal and other opponents is passion, organisation and direction. Often it’s much easier to see what the opponents are trying to do but not Arsenal.

  54. rico says:
