Arsenal FC by numbers..

Morning all.

Something a bit different this morning. Arsenal by numbers as in, numbers one to eleven with the odd greats who opted against tradition. Long gone are the days of numbers on shirts meaning much whereas in years gone by, numbers 1-11 would kind of mean you’re a first team player, but not these days.

Here’s a list of Arsenal players past and present and who had which number on their back.

One day I’ll learn how to remove the excessive and unneeded columns but until then I’m afraid they’re here to stay.

There are some great names in the long long list above, many of whom decided to pick their own number. Like Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell, Santi Cazorla, Gilberto Silva, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gabriel Martinelli – the list goes on but who can forget the great Nic Bendtner. LOL

Going by tradition though, Arsenal have a few gaps. Numbers 6, 12 and 13 although I doubt anyone would want the latter.

Anyway, for a bit of fun, or rather, if you can be bothered, pick one player from each number, 1-23 and build your own squad from past and present. I bet we all go for the same number 10 and 14.

See you in the comments guys.

    Morning Rico and All
4 Shirt Frank Mac I loved him top captain
in the old days then Paddy the great.
    I put No:4 on everything I wore,insisted
which ever team I played for No:4 was
    mine.
I was on holiday about 10 years ago
on a little island Ronaldo made famous
having a work-out in the gym with my
son, when curly haired geezer came in
I never took much notice of him,but my
son on leaving said that bloke never
    stopped looking at you dad.
Couple of days later me and the wife
were sitting down for dinner when this
curly haired geezer with his very attractive
wife asked if could join us.
Anyway he turned to me and said
“Do you know who I am”
I never had a clue as he said it,but
just as he was about to tell me the
    penny dropped.
“He said your wearing my shorts No:4.”
He was a very tough young player
who I see make his debut as a 18yr old
    No:4 Trevor Ross.
We spent the whole evening swopping
    stories,his were amazing Shankly,T Smith
J barnwell and when he played in Greece.

I don’t how I could not have Paddy and Frank
play in the same side with only one No: 4.

    Interesting one.
Overall, which number has provided our best set of players??
7 has to be right there….

  3. rico says:

    Morning Fred.

Great story. Must have been a really good evening for you.

It’s hard to pick one player from each number I think, especially when sentiment can get the better of human beings. In my heart, Rocky will always be my favourite number 7, but was he our greatest? No, probably not.

The older we are, the more difficult it is to choose.

  4. Sue says:

    Nice one, Rico 👍
I have to say I love the pictures!!
    Kolasinac looks lush!!
    Check out Willock’s pout
    David Luiz looks absolutely wild
And Sokratis… is that a smile or is it wind??!! 😂

  5. allezkev says:

Morning Rico, I took one look at that post and thought, I’ll go back to that!

Morning all, good news Rick, glad to hear that you’re in good shape. As far as the youngsters Rick, yeah we’ve still got a few uncut diamonds to come through over the next 12 months and with the finances we’re gonna need them.

Matt Smith is very highly regarded by Arteta who loves his passing range, I’m really hopeful that he might get a run out against Watford this weekend.

My only criticism of our academy is it’s inability to develop defenders anymore, who was the last young defender who came through our ranks from schoolboy to first team, so no Bellerin who was poached from Barcelona or Gibbs who came from Wimbledon?

  6. Cicero says:

    Good day all.

Well done Rico, it must have taken a while to compile that list. l’ll need much longer to make up my own.

In the meantime it is looking more than likely that the new season is going to kick-off behind closed doors.

The actions of the moronic Liverpool fans, twice, and the mob from Leeds have demonstrated just how stupid football supporters can be. By their mass ignoring of Covid advice about social distancing they have condemned themselves and thousands of more sensible fans to being banned from their club terraces for some time to come.

Both clubs should shoulder much of the blame for the disgraceful, and dangerous, scenes but the powers that be will probably do no more than punish them with a gentle slap on the wrist.

  7. allezkev says:

Any eleven that I would pick would have Manu Petit and Patrick Vieira at centre midfield, Tony Adams at centre half and David Seaman in goal…

The rest is just too difficult.

  8. rico says:

Shame he played on the wing too Scott.

Morning Kev, so did I as I wrote it. Most of which was copied though. Lol

Ditto the the core, I’d have Bergkamp too.

  9. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, I saw him tear Germany apart one day playing CF for Denmark
2 or 3 goals I think, and that was a top German side.
On his day, he was bloody good but overall, he let himself down.

  10. potter says:

Where do you start , My first hero was Dereck Tapscott replaced by Joe Baker were they better players than the presernt day players ? Probably not but they remain favourites .
Every era has an impossible task . Take the keepers :- Kelsey , Lukic , Wilson , Seaman, and now my favourite Martinez. who I believe to be better than Leno .
As you say the older you are the selection gets harder for me one player though is head and shoulders above everyone in his position and that is Dennis Bergkamp although having written that Liam Brady comes to mind.
    It’s impossible.

  11. potter says:

Cicero Liverpool’s fans will never learn ,
Remember their antics at Heysel and the effect that had on English clubs keeping us out of European football. Then of course the semi final at Hillsborough where they were found to be totally innocent ( hang on just removing the tongue from my cheek ). They always have had a sense of entitlement and anyone that stood on the terraces when they came to town knows all about bottles and wet legs as they pushed and shoved their way to the centre of the terrace peeing on the kids in front of them .
I have no time for them at all.

Sorry Rico if that’s a bit heavy but believe me it’s true.

  12. rico says:

I’m of the same opinion re Martinez Potter. There’s just about his calm exterior which does it for me.

Pires is another player I find hard to leave out of a best eleven. Freddie would definitely be on the bench, probably with Brady.

  13. rico says:

Not at all heavy Potter. They make me sick, always pleading innocent and shunting the blame elsewhere when the reality is, it’s their fans who are the instigators.

I did chuckle when I read about Frank Lampard having a go at Klopp and his bench the other night.

  14. Sue says:

I thought being spat at by one of them was bad enough, but being peed on?!! Sheesh…

I loved that too, Rico… and when Frank said don’t get arrogant with the league win…. too bloody late for that!!!
Although coming from Frank, I had to laugh, the chavs…. were they never arrogant?!
Pep has said end of season awards are for Liverpool 😆 When City won the league, Liverpool won poty…and they’ll win it this season after winning the league, he was right!! Good for you, Pep… not only us that thinks they’re everyone’s darlings then!!

  15. Joaquim Moreira says:

If I had been hired in my time as a footballer and offered shirt number 13, Arsenal’s history would have been higher!

  16. Declan says:

    @frednerk,
Frank Mac wore the number 5 shirt and Peter Storey wore 4.
The 4 shirt has now been taken off Elneny and given to Saliba.

  17. Declan says:

I saw most games they played in Rico, back in the day, and don’t remember that but of course Frank played mainly at centre half so wore the number 5 and 4 when at half back. Presumably Storey wore 2 or 3 when filling in at right back and left back respectively. Back in the day you didn’t have your own number and it changed depending on the position you played.

  18. Le Coq Monster says:

    Nice one Rico.

Too many great players to choose from as it gives me a headache, although I will say Saka is the greatest ever number 77 we`ve ever had!.

I see West Indies have a player called Cornwall and from the size of him I think he has eaten Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly!
Talking of Cornwall…………………it`s been wet, grey and miserable, but that`s enough about the wife………………Perranporth was it`s usual rainless sunny day and I nearly swallowed my wolf whistle with the beach babes out in force.

I think you`re right about numbers 10 and 14, but I do have a sort of liking for Charlie Nicholas only because it brought back memories of some good and bad moments in my days as a Charlie look a like!…………………..probably more to do with my award winning mullet hair style which even got me a “Mullet of the Month” in a German gay mag back in 1987!
I`m 5 years older than Charlie Nic`, but look younger, probably due to the tightness of my genes, but it`s what people say and who am I to argue?
Kids used to stare at me and call me Charlie. When we beat Bindippers in the 1987 league Cup Final I was bought drinks in the pubs afterwards just because of my Charlieness!………….those were the good bits, but there was one bad bit and that was when I went to a game against W Ham at Upton Park in April 1988. Me and a fellow Gooner went with 4 of our W Ham mates, but once in the ground me and my Gooner mate got seperated from the W Ham mates, we were not in the Arsenal end but amongst Hammers, the Arsenal fans were behind one goal with either side of them kept empty to stop fights, we were in the Chicken Run and it was packed, so the stewards opened up the corners to relieve the squashing.
Me and my mate were in one corner and behind us there were about 10 ICF boys behind us and they were going…..” Yoo Hoo……Cooey Charlie!”…………..I thought I recognised one of them and waved!, but that was no good and they kept on with the “Charlie” stuff. My mate said we better try and get out as they were going to kick our heads in and our miming of ” Forever Blowing Bubbles” and less than convincing “Booing” of Arsenal did not work so we walked to an exit and they covered the exit!……………..we then squeezed through the Chicken Run and got to some stairs to get out, but the ICF boys had gone under the stand and blocked us again!…………….they then started to threaten us which only resulted in some older West Ham fans arguing with the ICF boys, this gave me and my mate a chance to try and evade them again which my mate grasped as he said we should split up, next thing he is on the floor crawling on his hands and knees and working his way through the legs of everyone and disappeared, I was on my own!
I then slowly made my way back to another exit and as I went to run down some wooden stairs the ICF boys were in front of me and shouted.” Get Charlie!”……………………..I turned around and sprinted up the stairs as one ICF boy grabbed my jacket ripping it off only to reveal me in my Arsenal shirt, I instinctively leaped onto the pitch and run along the touch line as Arsenal were attacking!………………in all this commotion I could hear Tony Gale shout at Julian Dicks …… ” Dicksie…..Get Charlie Nicholas on the wing!”………………..Julian Dicks came over to mark me, but by the time he realised I was a decoy the defense had opened up and Michael Thomas took up the space to score the winner!
I was grappled by a copper and and explained that some W Ham louts were trying to kill me, he said I`ll put you in with the other Arsenal supporters and I said………..” no thanks, I think they are going to get a beating outside, so can you let me out of the ground somewhere else!”…………..he said “OK, but I will have to make it look real and put your arm up your back!”………………..as I walked past the Gooners behind the goal they sung ” Charlie, Charlie, born is the king of Highbury”……………..as I got out of ther ground I never run so fast in my life, which believe me is a lot quicker than Charlie!…………………..funny thing was, that Charlie had left us for Aberden 3 months earlier!

  19. Sue says:

Bloody hell, Le Coq, that sounds like something out of Green Street!
I only went to Upton Park once, with my gooner son and 2 of my West Ham supporting family members… sat in the Trevor Brooking stand above the Arsenal fans! Was sick to death of hearing I’m forever blowing bubbles and when we walked back to the tube (after winning 2-1) jeez it was like something out of Police Academy – the riots!! I couldn’t wait to get out of there!!

  20. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Rico and all great question it’s hard enough to pick one player let alone all numbers worn as too many great players with the same number and some players as you said wore 2 0r 3 different numbers

  21. rico says:

Declan, great point to prove how shirt numbering has changed over the years. Nowadays it seems like players have to take what’s on offer or opt for their choice until the one they really want becomes available.
