Are we just making up the numbers? 3 Signings imminent?

Morning all..

Tsgh kindly wrote his thoughts after the match on Tuesday so here they are….

For a man who started his European football management career so promisingly 30 or so years ago and even made the semi – finals with a moderately assembled team in his second attempt, one would have expected Arsene Wenger to have won the CL trophy by now but we all know it still a pipe dream for both him and Arsenal fans.

Has it just been a question of luck or just a lack of ambition from our ‘esteemed’ manager?

Going into the game in Westfalenstadion against a team who has at times, outplayed us off the pitch on the last four occasions we have faced them away under Klopp, one would have expected Wenger to go in with a battle plan. Maybe Wenger was counting on sheer luck again to come away with a result again as has happened in the last two visits.

When Debuchy was sent off in the second match of the qualifiers against Benfica and Arsene Wenger failed to make the defensive signings during the summer, the likelihood was always going to be that young Hector would be required irrespective of Debuchy’s injury last weekend.

Going into this game, the old Achilles heel of Wenger, which is the lack of squad depth in key areas of the squad showed up again, but on paper this was the weakest BVB 09 team we had faced in the last four or so years in the Champions League.

Nonetheless, with Szczesny, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Sanchez, Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil and Welbeck away from home in the first game of this seasons Champions league game against a team whose manager has described his teams style of play as heavy metal, we were bound to have a tough night. This was a game by all accounts that Rosicky should have started but as usual Wenger was hell-bent on implementing a formation from the sidelines’ looks rudderless.

It never fails to surprise me how many times we go into this big games starting with more attacking players than the opposition but still come away with a loss.

To say the first half was a disappointment would be an understatement in my opinion. Last January Ciro was allegedly close to joining us but we in the end decided against him for whatever reason and he ended up being the man who on the 44th minute after a superb individual move opened the scoring for his team after a splendid BVB first half performance.

It must be said that had it not been through poor finishing from one or 2 of the BVB players we could have gone off the pitch at half time at least 3 nil down. The only noticeable effort from us in the first half came in the 40th minute when Ramsey superbly found Welbeck with a clever ball but he failed to make the right connection.

At the start of the second half Kehl was taken off for Ginter (another player who was available last summer and could have given us another defensive/ midfield options but as we all know our manager is now more interested in kamikaze football than making a winning legacy.

Unfortunately for us the second half started off the same way the first half ended with BVB dictating play with their midfield 2 of Ginter and Sven finding the clever movements of their front 4. On the 48th minute Pierre Aubameyang, a player Klopp after signing described as being an Arsenal type of player, put the tie beyond us.

With things looking rather predictable, Arsene took off Ozil and Ramsey and bring on Santi and Oxlade but the damage had already been done.

The only positive for me was Hector Bellerin showing no signs of being an inexperienced defender at this level of professional football. Albeit sections of fans may say he was poor but to me he did the best he could considering the circumstances.

Unfortunately for us and Wenger the pressure is now on after this lose but just maybe us finishing 3rd or even 4th could be a blessing in disguise for us this season because in my view, this squad is completely ill-equipped to sustain even 3 competitions this season irrespective of the number of player e have on our books.

Wenger may point out that this is our first lose in Germany for over 10 years but putting aside the score line, taking a detailed look at the performance of the team put together by one of the longest serving managers in any of the top 5 leagues in Europe paints a worrying picture.

We can only hope the boys can put in a performance we can all be proud out against Villa on Saturday……

Written by Tsgh

Just to add a bit. There are reports doing the rounds on newsnow which suggest Wenger may try and sign two defenders who are available on a free contract, that’s  Joseph Yobo and Diego Lugano. There is also talk of Lassana Diarra heading our way. According to the Express, he left Lokomotiv Moscow in the summer and is now a free agent.

Yobo or Monreal in the centre of defence?

Diarra or Arteta in the CDM position?

It smacks of desperation, but we are not far from being desperate are we……

Have a good day all….

    Morning all..

Thanks for the post Ts, sorry it didn’t go up yesterday..

Got to nip off out early today, catch up around lunchtime…

  2. bondex says:

Morning rico all, great post tsgh…..Getting players into their proper position will be a good start, re yobo and lugano.

  3. Adam says:

When something is broken no amount of spare parts or glue can make it whole again. It really doesn’t matter if we sign a load of old blokes who are out of contract or Iker Casillas on £150k a week. It ain’t working. It really isn’t. The club needs to draw a line under it and move on. It will be painful and it might be expensive but to blow out to a quite average team like Dortmund the other night and to make them look so good while doing so should send shock waves through Arsenal. Wenger has lost the ability to inspire and motivate players to perform. You play musical chairs with names and who could do a job for us or formations we should be playing if you like, but for me we are witnessing the longest end-game in Arsenal’s history and until Kroenke wakes up we are going to be in for more pain as our manager will accept no criticism and is liable to get very pissed off if anybody dares to offer any.

  4. Nickie says:

Nice post Ts and thank you.

    Morning all,

Could someone explain to me when buying Arsenal tickets sometimes you can select your exact seat by clicking it and other times it only allows you to select a block and list the number of seats you want which is pants? Seems stupid and it’s awful trying to get tickets the latter way.

  5. AndrewH says:

Morning all, spot on Ts. Such a shame that whatever we think or say on here, and is said by ex-players and fans throughout the media, doesn’t make a blind bit of difference.

  6. ozgunner says:

spot on Adam my friend, i remember saying to you 2 years ago, you could give this man the best 11 on the planet and he’d still wouldn’t win a major i truly believe that

  7. ozgunner says:

some of the media are firing off at his very obvious deficiencies – they need to keep it going make his life a fcken misery i say

  8. bradster says:

i would welcome Diarra if it means an upgrade on Arteta and Flamini. Yobo looked ok in the world cup, i guess 4th choice wouldn’t be bad. Surely Richards would’ve been better choice when the offer was still available.

  9. AndrewH says:

Such a shame for his legacy, he could have walked away after the FA Cup win and we could have (more or less) forgotten the wasted years.

  10. Wavy says:

    Morning all.
The only way Wenger will leave the club is if, for the first time in his career he breaks his contract, ie resigns! I can’t see him doing it, or at least not until the end of the season. He always says, “judge me in May”. Well many will, and if the season has gone egg shaped, that is, no 4th place, no European football next year, no silverware this year, nothing for the future, then perhaps he will reluctantly tender his resignation and retire to the country to write is memoirs! He might choose a title something like,”thirty one years in football and not much to show for it”
Then again, he might not! Stan, Stan the toupee man wont sack him either, so he’ll see out his contract, largely because his “football mission is not yet over”!

  11. AndrewH says:

Maybe those CBs wanted first team football and Wenger was rigid they would be a reserve. I would have rotated our 3 CB’s last year (when TM was fit) and kept them all happy instead of giving TM the odd game at LB.

  12. tsgh says:

Ah, Oz even a proponent of AKB like myself is wondering how long we will be in the wilderness for…

If only someone will hold him accountable…

Saying that I know dead down we are only in it to chance it… The squad has not been set up to win a trophy since Hleb and Flamini jumped ship…

  13. tsgh says:

    ha ha ha Bt… At least it won’t be 40 years… 😉

Have you seen the latest Ozil photo with him hanging with Drake( the rapper)?

  14. ozgunner says:

i remember Scotty saying to me, you really don’t want us to win the FA Cup do you? I never answered – we came so close to freedom i think

  15. ozgunner says:

tsgh – there are none so blind as those that refuse to see and he simply exchanges facts with excuse and promises – year after year, you know my thoughts on him, i have held them for years. THE most over rated manager around at present and my one big disappointment is he never tested his out of date ways, with one of the more competitive clubs of the world

  16. ozgunner says:

the Ozil situation is also bullshit – I don’t care what anyone says as long as my manager likes me ffs – then you get Wenger banging on about how good his is and we just don’t get it – get over this shit ffs. How can we ever progress with this shit being sprouted season after season.

  17. ozgunner says:

fans have to be patient with Welbeck like Bendtner before him – why because you couldn’t pick a world class striker anymore if your life depended on it. There was no need for a budget purchase off the oppositions bench, crap management

  18. goonster says:

Ginge I guess the move to the emirates and the systematic disassembling of the invincibles messed him up real good. I spent 8 hours watching videos on YouTube. From the 98 to 2007 season. Arsenal was one of the most feared teams. The transition from defense to attack was frightening. It beggars belief that the same man who brought us teams like the 98 2002 2004 and 2008 season is the same person at helms of affairs. It’s really sad to see him fade away into oblivion. Bummer. Morning guys. Don’t mind me if you don’t understand my post. Driving and texting that’s why 😀

  19. rico says:

    Hello all…

Sun is shining, it’s lovely and warm here and then I thought about Arsenal under Wenger…

    Storms a brewing perhaps…..

  20. rico says:

Mario Balotelli has just gone way up in my estimation if this is true…

Is Mario Balotelli behind generous donation to arson hit Manchester Dogs’ Home?

Staff at Manchester Dogs’ Home, where 60 pooches were killed in ablaze last week, believe the Liverpool striker is responsible for a five figure donation

Madcap football ace Mario Balotelli has reportedly donated a hugely generous five-figure sum to the arson-hit Manchester Dogs’ Home.

Staff at the home are convinced the £16million Liverpool striker transferred the cash after 60 dogs were killed in a blaze on Wednesday last week.

Balotelli, 24, volunteered at the charity during his time a Manchester City.

Employees have revealed the 24-year-old offered his time walking abandoned dogs while his pet pooch was in quarantine in Italy ahead of a move to Manchester.

And they suspect the dog-loving forward – who earns £110,000-a-week – is behind an anonymous donation made via the Manchester Evening News’ Justgiving page.

Jane Smith, a spokeswoman for the dogs’ home, said: “Mario owns a dog but it was in quarantine in Italy so he used to come and walk all the dogs at the dogs’ home.

“We can’t yet confirm whether he made a donation but he is known as a big dog lover so it would make sense.”

Balotelli is as widely known for his eccentric antics off the pitch as he is for those on it, having reportedly handed a homeless person a large sum of cash in the past.

And his love for dogs is well-known among the football elite .

He once even requested his pet dog join him during the Manchester City FA Cup parade in 2011.

  21. allezkev says:

    Good post…

Substitute Diawara, Yobo and the other Herbert, for Hartson, Kiwomya and Helder and for those who remember, we could be about to revisit those days…

I have zero faith in Wenger, he’s had his day, he looks tired and bereft of ideas.
The game has moved on and Arsene is stuck in a 2003-04 time warp…

Even Dein is around anymore with his tacit support…

  22. Joaquim Moreira says:

One more post follow the words i’ve been writting before.
Now, just waiting for the next match and hope the obvious not come true

  23. rico says:

Diarra would be ok Kev, just on a short-term deal IF he is literally a stop gap and next summer, a new manager signs who we need… lol

  24. rico says:

After me saying the sun is shining, the clouds have come over and the rain is on it’s way..

Off to run around the grass with the mower… 😉

  25. Adam says:

Kev. Well said. With someone next to him readjusting his view of reality he has lost his way. He isn’t the first and……..

  26. tsgh says:

    You doomed the weather Rico…

    Well than Mario Barwuah…

Ditto about Goonie… hopefully he can turn it around…; I have nothing other than ‘wishful thinking’ left…

  27. allezkev says:

Adam, as you, Lee and I have discussed, there isn’t any master plan. Everything is reactive.

We got Welbeck because ManUre needed to balance their books.

We Got Ozil because Resl Madrid needed to balance their books.

We got Sanchez because Gazides did a top job getting him whilst Wrnger was in Brazil working for French TV.

It isn’t all part of some well-thought out strategic plan by the genius that ‘was’ Wenger.

We stumble from one injury crisis to another whilst Arsene puts his fingers in his ears and sings la la la..,,

    Only three more years Adam.
    Stay strong mate… 🙁

  28. agirlagunner says:

Soooo depressing being an AFC supporter right now. 😥 That was embarrassing v. Dortmund. This squad feels so ragtag, and exposed, and

  29. rico says:

    Bt, I’m safe with a petrol mower… 😉

Kev/Adam. My money is on him not lasting 3 years, IF things carry on the way they are…

And I can’t see the old has been changing now….

  30. Adam says:

Kev. He’s mate. As you know, that business lecturer/Gooner I had dinner with recently explained the whole Arsenal ‘thing’ to me in a light I hadn’t really considered before. How naive I was.

  31. Lewis says:

We get spouting off about who he could have signed again?! So boring.

Nice post TS. We are also rans these days, we all need to accept that until he leaves that is all we are.

  32. Sukky says:

Wenger won’t buy diarra, that’s for sure.He won’t accept he failed.I hope Wenger go back to 4-2-3-1 now that his boy is injured.Ozil back in number 10 and Ramsey on †̥ђƺ beach with rosicky coming in as box to box.I think that will change things but we all know Wenger,he doesn’t do †̥ђƺ right thing.Afternoon house.

  33. bradster says:

i know how Wenger feels…If i only chose the horse that came first instead of betting on that outsider that finished stone last. I didn’t care about the race form, this no hope horse was gonna show it’s true top top skill and win.
Hind sight Wenger filled with what could’ve beens.

  34. tsgh says:

Sukky, if you can recall fans were calling for 4-4-2 last season when the perception was that we were playing 4-2-3-1…

I think the issue is beyond system/tactics… the wheels are off now. AW either can’t motivate his players when it matters or some players can’t be asked to make an effort…
A change of some sort is needed as most have said… either he changes his backroom staff with Boro P. being the first to go or he goes himself…

  35. rico says:

Ts, I agree – have said for a while now (without trying to sound like a know it all) that AW needs to sign a new coach, one who will bring new ideas and one who he will listen to…

Trouble is, we all know he’ll do none of the above because he is too stubborn and he’s a control freak…

  36. TONYBEE (@TBINJ) says:

yobo and diara shows our lack of ambition No point in playing in the cl and get knocked out in the last 16 we need to inc=vest like other team instead in investing in free players

  37. goonster says:

In arson I trust 😀 afternoon campers. What’s new?? Yobo huh??? Tsk Tsk Tsk. Arsene arsene arsene what happened to you? You ve gone stale and out of ideas. Somebody gag him before he speaks in public again. God almighty what’s happening to our dear club? Am freaking out guys and trust me you do not want a freaking out goonster. God jesus help me.

  38. Sukky says:

How about Ramsey as a DM and rosicky and jack in front of him in †̥ђƺ 4-1-4-1 formation, with campell and alexie as †̥ђƺ winger.

  39. George says:

Wow , this is depressing. we need a result like never before against Villa.

If he doesnt play Rosicky Podolski and Campbell I will eat my socks.

  40. Gonerjoe says:

Evening everyone the result on Tuesday night was disgusting the team was run of the pitch by a very good team.
Now we where very lucky to get away with only losing by 2 goals it became very clear we need a DM with pace and it’s Wenger’s fault we don’t have one.
After watching man city last night they played every bit as bad as we did on Tuesday night this gave me some pleasure (I am small man I need to get my pleasures some where 🙂 )
I after spending the day thinking how could two teams who played so well against each other on Saturday produced the rubbish they did in their CL match’s.
Now could it be that Saturdays’ match took a lot out of them and left them both vulnerable to two very good German teams.
    Very good match report tsgh

  41. Joaquim Moreira says:

    what mostly of HHs know:
    from http://www.europsort.com
Wenger fails to address Arsenal’s glaring issues
    When asked last week why Arsenal had such a poor record away to the biggest teams, Arsene Wenger’s explanation seemed accurate enough. “We were not aggressive enough, we were not mobile enough and we lost too many challenges. As a unit, we were beaten all over the place.”;
Having identified the problem, though, Wenger has demonstrably failed to solve it. Arsenal’s display at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday night was no less abject than any of theirs in big away games against serious sides last season. The only difference between this game and those was the Borussia Dortmund’s finishing let them down. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ciro Immobile were all electric in their movement and interchanging and if only they could have found a bit more clinicism in front of goal it would have been a very different.
What was abundantly clear, again, though is that this Arsenal team is still not able to travel to the home of a serious side and come home with anything by way of points, goals or pride. Of course, Galatasaray and Anderlecht will be different propositions but the problem is already obvious. If Arsenal finish second and draw a group-winner in the last 16, that is likely to be that, for the fifth year in a row.

  42. rico says:

JM, Wenger doesn’t sign who we need when the transfer window is open, he’s hardly likely to sign a freebie or two as it’ll send out a sign that he got things wrong….

  43. goonster says:

Howdy rico did shitty lose 😀 joe am a smaller man than you lol and I take pleasure in seeing others squirm too. Hehehehehe. Afternoon good people.

  44. goonster says:

Yikes that came out all wrong. When I say small joe I meant in person not my package 😀 because I know DG ll be abouts soon and that’s a classic goonster jibe. Lol. He ll never let up.

  45. tsgh says:

sukky, one of my gripe last season even though AR16 was carrying the team on occasions with his goals was that he was pushing too high forward. When Ar16 starting gaining form 2 seasons ago I was expecting AW to make him an understudy to Ar16 as he had the engine, the pass range and the tactical awareness to become a very good ball playing CDM but instead AW pushed him high and high as no one else in midfield was making runs behind opposition lines…

AW has to realise that most of our players can’t play with their backs to goal…

Iniesta and Xavi said the same about FC Barca 3 or so years ago that they held possession better than most teams because they tried not to turn with the ball with their backs against goal…

One Tuesday night, I can’t remember how many things Alexis lost the ball with his back to goal…

Garnering the thoughts of MA08 after the match it seems whatever plan AW set the team up to play was not implemented…

The question from any leadership point of view will be why the plan was not executed in either half…

AW it seems uses the last performance of his opponents games before our UCL games to set up his team which in my view is very very naive…

Most teams have a big game plan and an everyday plan… My guess is that Aw expected Ramos to start ahead of Immobile who up until last Tuesday was struggling with form..

The fact that Klopp played P.E.A and Immobile, 2 very fast forwards instead of Ramos and Kagawa plus also and started Durm on the rhs instead of the lhs so that the more experienced Schmelzer who normally operated from the rhs could mark out Alexis must have skewered/negated our limited chance of gaining any point imho…

The point is that if Klopp who also has bad games can change things and surprise his opponent in the big games; then Aw should also be able to do that without compromising on his purist style of play… imo

  46. tsgh says:

Interesting point Gj… though I normally defend Aw like you this type of performances is not a one of…

If one follows BVB like I do, we may agree BVB’s performance was something they were capable off against possession teams like Fc Bayern and us.

Note that BVB were hammered 3-0/1 by the dippers the weekend we beat Mancity in the Community shield but 4 days later at my vintage point of 54 Ost in the Iduna stadium we beat FC Bayern 2-0.. playing the same way they played against us on Tuesday…

We are predictable most times, that is why imo we are out thought on the big occasions …

  47. tsgh says:

TR07 has been playing DM or box to box for the Czech at international level for awhile now too..

I am surprised AW has used him there only once.. i.e the game at Fulham where he and Ramsey played the double pivot with Sc19 as the no.10 and we won 3-1 after the AV lose last season…

The game Klopp, Pep and Conte all said was the best tactical footballing performance they had seen any club play for a long time anywhere in Europe…

  48. goonster says:

Ginge wenger knows what to do. It’s so easy. Even he can see it but he chose not to. I don’t get it. I remember that game vividly ts. Tr7 boss the mid field. It’s really heart breaking that we have the players to not just win but dominate the epl but dear arsene won’t play them in their right positions. So sad

  49. Gonerjoe says:

    Tsgh
There can be no defense of Tuesday’s performance by Arsenal but man city put in a similar performance the next night and no one can dispute man city have enough DM players.

  50. tsgh says:

Indeed Gj… you make perfect sense on that one..

My point of argument when Arteta’s mobility is brought up is always that.. loads of teams win trophies without a proper DM… even City won the title with Barry who England fans disliked…

Fergie won more titles with Carrick another England reject as well…

Kehl is 34 and demoted captain of BVB but plays DM… he is no better or faster than Arteta imo..

With all 10 outfield players putting in a shift; there won’t be an issue… but unfortunately most of our players imo are tactically inept.

Maybe if Ramsey was on form and had put in ashift the performance would have been different as he will do the donkey work for Arteta as Sven/Jojic does Kehl/Sahin…

  51. Gonerjoe says:

The 3 English clubs did not have great nights against the Germans and it could be argued that chelski had the worst result of the 3.
Everton just scored against a German team.

  52. tsgh says:

Nothing like a Golf mkII- Bt. 🙂

Gj- the bundesliga gets less tv money, charge less at the gates and still do better in all areas.. still Dyke has an answer so…

  53. Gonerjoe says:

German players playing for German clubs with much better coaching from an early age than their English counter parts.
All that about the bundesliga is true but for FC hollywood the fact is players in the PL get paid a lot more than there counterparts in Germany so this is where most of the money goes.

  54. tsgh says:

Someone was saying the other day that the only few times the squad train ona big pitch is when they are practicing set-pieces…

Most times they play on small areas of the field… that could explain why some players fail to utilise the whole pitch during games…

  55. Gonerjoe says:

Is Walcott becoming a better player the longer he’s injury goes on found my self saying wait till Walcott gets back.

  56. tsgh says:

Absence makes the heart grow fonder as they say..

He will be back with his poor touch and lack of tracking back until he finds the bakc of the net 10 games in and then gets injured gain… lol

Big game player though no doubt…

  57. bradster says:

    Morning all,

Reports are out that Wilshere, Monreal and Chambers are fit to play. So back to Saturday’s formation then.

  58. Bt62 Gooner says:

Rico, wren long gone…in a good way….lol….overcast here….you can keep your stinkin rain…Adam how goes it ?

  59. Adam says:

Hi BT. Not bad mate. Out for dinner yesterday evening with some friends and then a night of crazy lightning and enormous thunderclaps. If I still had a cat he/she would have freaked at the noise and flashes. The air was really warm, tense and electric.
    How are you?

  60. Bt62 Gooner says:

Rico, phew is right, thought Chico our black cat, had it as a snack. Got our tabby Spike, out early doors, he was in full hunter, killer mode…but all good in the end..

  61. Bt62 Gooner says:

Morning Adam, calm here all night, played footie last night, bloody warm…lol…Fear for us at Villa tomorrow, i’ve a mate comin over for the match and a wee dram or two…i think we’ll need it…lol
