A mixed bag but a gritty, determined and deserved victory

Morning all.

Love this.

Didn’t you react in similar fashion when Gabriel scored? I was out of my chair and running around the sitting room in celebration. Seriously though, it was good to see the Arsenal women in the stadium supporting the mens team. I hope the men find time to reciprocate the support once the WSL is up and running.

Arsenal 2 Fulham 1

That was a right old mixed bag of a game of football. It had everything from moments of brilliance, mistakes, a bit of handbags and terrible officiating. In my opinion, Arsenal spent too much time focusing on the extra pass in and around the box. For Gabriel, too much time trying to fancy foot his way out of trouble instead of dealing with situation. Mitrovic was on him in a flash and we were 1-0 down. Captain Martin Odegaard brought the scores level, assisted by a slight deflection which helped the ball fly past Bernd Leno and then with minutes left on the clock, Gabriel Martinelli, for the only time in the game, played a corner into a dangerous area which Leno couldn’t quite get to. Gabriel did though and after a VAR review, his goal was allowed and with it, Arsenal had secured maximum points. It also led to continued support for the top for at in2bet.com.cy, with odds also shortening on the site for a title challenge.

Mitrovic is a nasty striker. He plays on the edge of the rules in my opinion but he’s also a great striker. Strong, physical and extremely good at what he does. Whether he remains at the level he’s at for the entire season is questionable as he’s been in the Premier League before and struggled. I hope this time he succeeds because he could cause many clubs a lot of problems. All our rivals hopefully.

The Negatives:

Not being ruthless enough in front of goal. Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli all guilty of spurning opportunities. Eddie Nketiah too after he came on in the second half.

The Positives:

The fans – as Alan Smith said, it’s been a long time since The Emirates Stadium has been so noisy in a positive way. I’m not sure the stadium has ever been like it was yesterday, mind you, I don’t think the support for the team in general has been as good as it now for years. That’s down to Edu, the board, Mikel Arteta and the squad they’ve built. Every single player who walks on to the pitch is giving their all and I think the fans react to what they see.

Mikel Arteta on our response to going a goal down

We have grown up, we have more alternatives. I think we have matured as well. Playing in front of these supporters helps because they are driving you as well and then a lot of that is about belief and confidence that you can do it and really believe that you can do it, and now we have that belief.

On the connection with our supporters…

I don’t know any top teams, winning teams, that don’t have that connection with their supporters. I just had a person that I really like, that I love, that I haven’t seen for a while, it’s the first time that he’s been at the stadium for two years and he says it’s the best he’s heard since Highbury, so well done.

Gabriel made one mistake. Did his head go down? No. Did his teammates rally round him? Yes they did and when Odegaard scored, he ruffled Gabriel’s hair, well, he would have had he not shaved it all off. Lol

Aaron Ramsdale looked more like his old self with a couple of really good saves. Ben White was very good at right-back, William Saliba just went about his business quietly and confidently, as did Odegaard. Despite being a goal down, Arsenal didn’t stop believing they could win the game and it wasn’t until that idiot with the whistle blew for full time, did any one of the players stop fighting for the cause.

Mikel Arteta made a bold move on the hour by replacing Kieran Tierney with Nketiah and he was full of energy. His fresh legs caused the Fulham defence problems, as did his movement. By the end, Rob Holding had replaced Odegaard and Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Jesus. Oh, and Ramsdale had made what turned out to be a match winning save.

Next up for Arsenal is Aston Villa at The Emirates on Wednesday night. Hopefully Thomas Partey and Oleksandr Zinchenko will be fit for that one.

See you in the comments.

Good Morning to The Lady of the House. A good summation of the game, Our team was playing well, but not as well as they can. However, the mark of a champion is grinding out a win when not at the top of their game, winning ugly.

The team are enjoying playing the games, enjoying playing with each other, enjoying the support from the fans, playing with confidence and for each other. Our team and our crowd are driving each other on. I’m feeling a real positive vibe that I haven’t felt since the best days of the Wenger Era when we had the lies of Henry, Bergkamp, Veiera, Petit, Sir Bobbie, et al playing.

As for Mitrovic, he reminds me a bit of Diddler Drogba, olaying on the edge using his physicality. He always got the best of Senderos.

The team are epitomising the club motto “Victoria Concordia Crescit”, victory through harmony. Long may it last.

  2. Obi says:

Odegaard is so composed at his age, its amazing, reminds me of Cesc but remember Cesc had legends around him. Unbelievably talented too; and Martinelli never flustered and tremendous talent. If this group stays together with no major injuries, imagine in 2-3 years.

Btw, Arteta’s in-game management was excellent.

    Rico,

Speaking of “a streak of nastiness”, I see have been drawn in a group with PSV for the Europa League: a team coached by Ruud van Nastyboy.

The atmosphere at the stadium appears to be rocking and I have to say that I am missing it. However in these times it is hard to justify the trip . For the Everton match an off peak return by train will cost £ 133.40 each and that has 4 changes on route . No wonder i am thinking of taking my Khan hated diesel although that will probably mean a ULEZ charge to get anywhere within walking distance to the ground after a 130 mile drive down .Avoiding that charge would mean getting the tube from out side and that would probably be a tenner each.
    Any advice KEV ?
There is a connection between the players , manager and fans and don’t the media just hate it.. Keyes and Gray reckon that we over celebrate , well stuff them .
The all together camaraderie is something that Arteta has been working on and currently it’s bearing fruit .
    Long may it continue.

  5. rico says:

Keys and Gray can take a long run off a short pier. A win is worth celebrating regardless of who it’s against. I bet Gray celebrated every win he experienced.

I’d love to go to The Emirates this season too, but like you, I can’t justify it right now. Not when everything is on the price rise.

I finally saw Arsenal’s 2nd game live (the previous one was CP). I watched the other days later, comfortably, knowing the result and the victories. There is joy in playing, we are appreciated playing, there is fluidity, daring, opportunities, quality and spectacle. There are now 2 games a week for 2 months and it seems to me that the squad is short. Also because Tierney and Partney have to be treated with “tweezers”. If you see Pedro Neto (which I doubt) it’s one more. Also, as always, I would love to go to the Emirates, because I don’t know. I met Highbury. But putting everything together, from plane, accommodation, metro, etc., is a little bit.

  7. Adam says:

Afternoon Rico. We certainly missed Partey and Zinchenko yesterday. Arteta must buy a CM as a priority I would have thought.

  8. Potter says:

Marco Asensio has refused a contract at Real Madrid and has just joined Edu’s mate Jorge Mendes .
    Recent trip to Spain anyone?

  9. Aussie Geoff says:

As a few of said why would one of the main people involved in the transfer market go on holidays during the transfer season.

  10. Cicero says:

    Good morning all.

I can’t see us signing Asencio, his position is essentially a number ten and we already have Odegaard, ESR, Xhaka, and potentially, Zinchenko in that role. Also, at twenty-six he is in the upper age range of the Edu/Arteta player profile. He would be expensive in both transfer fee and wages and would expect to be handed a regular starting place.

Our priority must still be a defensive midfielder.

  11. rico says:

    Morning Geoff, Cicero.

I suppose it depends on whether or not Arteta see Asencio as a player to back up Saka. I’m in the DM camp too and don’t see the point in replacing Pepe as we have Marquinhos, Nelson and other options for the right wing. If there’s a limited amount of money left to spend, I really hope it’s spent on a midfielder.

  12. Aussie Geoff says:

If the story is true I hope Auba and his family are all ok and that that Auba didn’t get to hurt by the cowards who attacked him and his family

  13. Cicero says:

Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his wife were both struck in the face in front of their children during a violent robbery carried out by armed thieves in the early hours of Monday morning, Spanish police said.

Police said that at least four masked men, armed with firearms and iron bars, climbed into Aubameyang’s garden at his home in Castelldefels at around one o’clock in the morning.

Aubameyang and his wife Alysha Behague were beaten and held for an hour until the thieves were able to open a safe, from which they took “several jewels” before fleeing in a white Audi.

A spokesman for the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police, told Telegraph Sport: “This was clearly a professional job carried out by a very well-organised gang. They tied up and beat Aubameyang and his wife in front of their children. They spoke with Italian accents.”

RAC1 radio, a Catalan radio station, reported that Barcelona have offered psychological counselling to the two children.

The player and his wife were only slightly injured and declined to go to hospital because it would upset their children.

  14. potter says:

Much safer in London just ask Ozil and Kolasinac and the people getting stabbed for their Rolex watches.
Suppose he will be on his way to Chelsea soon.

  15. Adam says:

Evening Rico. I think that when you look at the sort of people Keys, Gray, Souness, Jordan and Keane are, we should be happy that they are so opposed to our club. To have these repellent, chauvinistic men singing our praises would make most Arsenal fans feel rather mucky. As if you had stood in something really unpleasant and couldn’t wipe it off your shoe.

  16. rico says:

Evening Adam, sorry, you went into moderation. To be honest, I take very little notice of what the likes of them say, they’re obviously trying to get to Arteta and the players. I haven’t seen them suggest similar about other clubs who win and then celebrate. Idiots!

  17. Aussie Geoff says:

so many people complaining about us over celebrating we we score or win is a positive thing. after all at least we are scoring and winning

  18. Obi says:

EPL teams have gone mad, very mad: 85m for Antony – I can’t get over that, 70m for Forfana – see game against Martinelli, 70m for Casemiro – no pace or passing range, 50m for Paqueta who doesn’t even fit WH playing style and 60m for Isak who walks around in most games. It make 60m for Haaland, 50m for Sterling, 45m for Jesus, 45m Philips and 30m for Zinchenko all steals.

  19. Aussie Geoff says:

Times running out if we are to buy any more players, has Bellerin gone yet or is still hanging around

  20. rico says:

Desperation Obi and the selling clubs know it.

Bellerin still hanging around Geoff, waiting for Arsenal to rip his contract up no doubt.

    Morning all.

  21. Cicero says:

Good morning Rico, Scott Parker getting the elbow is not much of a shock considering the nine nil thrashing inflicted by Liverpool. His team surrendered on the pitch, that is if they were actually there and not WFH. 😉

  22. rico says:

Morning Cicero, I’d have thought it a bit premature to sack him. The weekend’s result was probably just a blip. They’re not even bottom of the league. 😆

  23. Obi says:

Re Scott Parker’s sacking. Fulham wanted him to stay but according to him, I remember his exact words, “certain things needed to happen after two years, and it didn’t so I decided to move on”. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

  24. potter says:

Seems that Elneny has picked up an injury and according to the Athletic he is out for a substantial time. This of course may be a blind to urge The Arsenal to sign a midfielder because if it’s true then we just have Lokonga to play alongside Xhaka .

  25. allezkev says:

Mixed messages: Ornstein reports that Elneny is injured and could be out for awhile, premierinjuries.com have Elneny down as a hamstring strain?

  26. potter says:

Geoff :-It was once but is now the left wing socialist paradise , It was the setting for the nursery rhyme “Pop goes the weasel ” where poor people spent all their money in the pub and then pawned their clothes to get money for more beer . The pop was the sound of the pawnbrokers box shutting and the weasel came from Weasel and stoat ( Coat ).
Bit of useless information for you.

  27. Aussie Geoff says:

I read some ware that Edu is looking at another striker as he has concerns about Saka burning out

  28. Obi says:

Geoff, Saka is a concerned. It’s more than “burn out”, his game has not improved for 2 seasons. If it is simply a burn out then why not just give him a rest. They may be concerned about his lack of improvement and dithering on the ball.

  29. Obi says:

Rico, maybe is because PSV doesn’t press as Arsenal does, but I can’t see Gakpo fitting the Arsenal pressing style. Dude is big (about 6’2″), athletic and fast but walks around most of the time.

  30. Aussie Geoff says:

OBI I said a while ago that I reckon that Saka has stalled since Auba left and got my head bitten off,

  31. Cicero says:

Partey and Zinchenko both ruled out through injury. No hint given about when they will be fit to return. Partey’s injury is to the same hamstring which caused him to miss so many games last season, and will need another scan before the medics can make any estimate of the time scale for his recovery.

It’s no longer just a priority to sign a DM, it’s absolutely vital!

  32. Aussie Geoff says:

    Morning Rico and all.
Not surprised to hear Party out but thought Zinchenko would play, maybe Arteta saving Zinchenko for Man U

  33. Cicero says:

    Geoff,

From Arteta’s comments on the club website, Zinchenko will miss at least the next two games, Villa and United.

  34. Obi says:

The need for a DM or box to box MF is glaring. I saw a stat over the weekend, in the games that partey has played, Arsenal have won 74% of those games. This further substantiate that we need to buy a DM.

  35. Obi says:

Geoff @ 1:42, you were right. He has definitely stalled. He has showed no improvement. He’s the same player that he was 2 years ago. The thing that gets me is how he slows the attack.
