A flattering 4-1 score-line & Remembering Rocky………

March 31, 2013

Morning all,

The man, The Arsenal man, the man we all miss……….

Most people on here know I have affinity to Reading so I’m not going to bleat on about yesterdays game.

All I will say though is, how on earth did we allow them to nab a goal?

Reading getting just one goal on the score-sheet was flattering, we battered them from start to finish and had some of our players been able to finish, we would have been into a double figure score-line.

It really was that one sided.

Hopefully though, conceding that one goal though will keep Wenger’s feet on the ground and he’ll realise that our defence, although better of late, is far from perfect!

Gervinho, Cazorla, Giroud, and Arteta were all on the score-sheet on a day when three of them could have easily tripled their own goal tally.

Three points we wanted, three points we got and now I want to wish Reading all the very best and hope, even pray, that they can go on a defy all odds and stay in the Premier League.

For us, well we all know it’s about finishing as high up in the league as we can. We are currently 2 points behind Chelsea in 4th place and four points behind the Totts in 3rd place, but with a game in hand over them.

We just need to keep focussing on us, keep on winning and see what happens as we head towards the end of the season.

Then we need to make a few changes, sign a couple of top top players, and players who have the colour of Arsenal running through their veins to make us much much stronger next season. Players who will show each week that they are prepared to put their bodies on the line for our great club, not bottle a challenge or a tricky situation.

One man who did have that red and white blood running through him was David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle and twelve years ago today, he was cruelly taken from this world having suffered and finally lost the battle against that evil disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He lived Arsenal, he breathed Arsenal and he cried for Arsenal when he found out he days at the club were over….

When he passed away, fans cried. Cried for his loss, cried for his wife, his children and the rest of his family. They’d lost a husband, father, son, brother and a great friend….

We lost our Rocky, one of the best…

At seven minutes past the hour yesterday, Rocky’s face lit up the big screens at The Emirates, fans stood, applause began and all in memory of our old number seven. The Reading fans joined in too, it was one of those moments when football didn’t matter, respecting Rocky’s memory did.

David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle – today and every day, may peace be always with you……

That’s it for another day folks…..

Walcott out for the season? Ramsey Red is good news for Arsenal

March 23, 2013

Morning all,

Why not?

After all, Jack Wilshere picks up a knock to his ‘good’ ankle and straight away the media frenzy erupted.

As of course did many fans who wanted to blame the manager for overplaying him. Can you imagine trying to tell Jack Wilshere he needs a break, he’s a Gooner, if he’s fit he’ll want to be on the pitch doing all he can to secure victory, not sat on his backside having a little rest.

I’m sure the only reason he’s not playing is to keep him from playing for England. When Reading arrive at The Emirates, I strongly suspect he’ll either be starting or coming on from the bench. The latter of course is more likely, just to keep the FA off of the clubs back.

Now Theo has picked up an injury, I’m not quite sure what injury he has sustained because one newspaper says it’s a thigh injury, another says it’s a groin strain yet the official site say’s he has suffered a hip injury.

I say, how convenient!

Does that mean he’s out for the season too?

Of course it doesn’t yet this is a man who has struggled with injury season after season so why the different rules I wonder. Of course, Jack was out for the entire season last term, so of course any little injury to him means something different. The fact it was to his ‘good’ ankle made little difference to the mischief makers.

My own view is that Arsenal are desperate to get a top four finish, they want to have as many players back in London as they can..

Ok that still leaves many other overseas players on call for their countries but maybe Wenger has a better understanding with the managers abroad, maybe he knows players won’t feature in both fixtures or at least not for 90 minutes each game.

Mind you, I’m surprised Podolski has travelled, he has been ‘unfit to play’ for us recently.

Could Wenger want him to get playing time as we prepare for a tough run-in?

And please don’t anyone think I am condoning the top four season finish being the bee all and end all, I don’t. I just want the club I support to win each game and finish as high in the table as it possibly can.

To wish anything else would be a sin in my opinion.

Quick round up of the Internationals..

England sneaked a lucky win last night, nice to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain add to his International goal tally. Good goal too despite Shrek nearly taking the ball off of his feet.

Arron Ramsey also found the back of the net for Wales, but he also found an early bath after being shown a red card so he to could be on his way home.

Elsewhere, Thomas Vermaelen got on the score-sheet as Belgium beat Macedonia 2-0. Olivier Giroud scored one and missed a easy opportunity to get a second in France’s 3-1 victory over Georgia, Koscielny didn’t feature in the victory which is good but I suspect he will play when France come up against Spain next week.

Talking of which, Santi Cazorla played the first forty-five minutes as his country managed to draw with Finland. Nacho Monreal was an unused substitute.

Podolski got some playing time too, unlike Wojciech Szczesny, who as expected, was only a spectator as Poland lost 3-1 at home to Ukraine.

Fingers crossed Theo’s injury is not as bad as the newspapers are making out. We should hear over the next 48 hours…

Think that’s about it for another day, have a good one all….

Song plus two team-mates in the summer? Arsenal Legend retires & The Emirates stands idol!

March 20, 2013

Morning all,

Ok, ok, don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just saving you buying the red-tops/internet to get your footie gossip fix!

What a joke this latest is which has been conjured up by Italian website Tutto Mercato Web.

They report that Arsene Wenger is looking to lure Alexis Sanchez, defender Martin Montoya and former midfielder Alex Song to the Emirates.

WHAT??!

Song back to The Emirates, never, no way, not ever! Arsene Wenger couldn’t wait to accept Barcelona’s offer for the lazy player who all too often thought he was Messi, so no way will he want him back. Not at any cost! Wenger can appear stupid to some of us but he isn’t that stupid!

Martin Montoya is a 21 year old right back, who knows whether any link to him is true but if Sagna really is set to leave, a player of this young age is not what we need in my opinion. We already have one at the same age who is destined for great things. Unless of course, Jenkinson is heading for a move central. (yes, that’s where I hope he ends up)

Alexis Sanchez – well he’s an under tall forward who has suffered with injuries.

Two players who are NOT about to turn their back on us is Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczesny.

I believe in the philosophy of the club and that Arsenal will start to win again.

I have a debt to pay here. I owe them. I don’t want to go anywhere else. As long as they want me here, there is no ‘somewhere else’ and I have a contract until June 2015.

Then there is Per, our big German international. He’s said:

A change is not an issue. Our manager Arsene Wenger gives me absolute confidence, I play every game.

I can think of nothing else, but to stay at Arsenal.

So mischief makers. Go and pick on another club!!

A read a ‘nice’ article about Arsenal FC this morning in The Daily Telegraph, and it’s HERE if you want to read it.

Whilst we are all down in the dumps with the way the season has unfolded yet again, there other others within the club who still have a lot to play for before this season closes.

The youngsters are still aiming to win the NextGen Trophy and the Ladies are battling hard to win the Womens Champions League.

Arsenal and England player, Rachel Yankey was just a few days ago, help England to win the Cyprus Cup by scoring this goal.

Not bad eh!

Today the Ladies face Italian side, ASD Torres in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final.

It’s sad really, this game should be an evening kick-off but owing to the floodlights not being up to European standards at Boreham Wood, home fixtures have to be moved to the day. Of course, that in turn means support for the ladies will drop by thousands, as many who would travel to their evening fixture will be working.

Meanwhile, the clubs wonderful stadium and pitch goes unused for a couple of weeks…

Hardly fair is it?

I am sure many male supporters would scoff at the very idea of watching the womens game, maybe they’d add a few choice comments about it too but the reality is, they are the only team within the club who keep on managing to win trophies season after season..

The BBC are screening two programmes which are presented by Jacqui Oatley, of Radio Five Live.

The first is ahead of the Women’s FA Cup final on May 26, which will also provide a review of the FA Women’s Super League, and the second on July 8, looking forward to the Women’s European Championship.

Good luck to those girls, I hope they show the men how to win…

Again!!

There’s only one place to end today really.

Faye White has decided to hang up her boots.

At 35 years old and after a long and very successful career with Arsenal, she’s finally giving in..

I never thought that I would win so much. I captained England and Arsenal for over 10 years and that’s brilliant. I look back and think I’ve done a lot and I’ve won a lot. I have to be thankful for that. I’ve won a lot and I’m really fortunate to have done that and played for so many years at such a wonderful club. I think it’s a great Club and that’s why I never moved.

I had offers in previous years, certainly around the time the American league started up. I knew Arsenal was a great place and really looked after the girls and did a lot for women’s football in this country. As the England captain, I wanted to play the game in this country rather than abroad. To spend my career at one club is pretty good.

We’ve been so successful over the years and have won a lot of trophies. I feel fortunate to have been a part of that. I won pretty much everything there was to win, including the WSL in my final season. There wasn’t much to come back and win really.

Michael Owen may have announced the end of his playing days, but Faye White will be missed by all Gooners, far more than him..

That’s it for today, have a good one….

Diaby returns & Jenkinson off? Szczesny’s a Gooner and Theo still hasn’t signed………

January 10, 2013

Morning all,

Just when we all thought the Walcott situation was drawing to a close and Wenger/Gazidis might actually be free to sort a couple of transfer moves out, Diaby only goes and plays for the reserves and doesn’t suffer a setback!

We all know what that means don’t we, but that isn’t the way to take our squad into and beyond the next few moths, let alone the next few seasons. For sure its good news as Manchester City come to visit at the weekend but Diaby won’t save our season, or any future ones!

Frimpong played yesterday too, although instead of playing in his usual role, he was shoved out onto the left and the little tough tackler was somehow sent off towards the end for a second bookable offence. I didn’t see the game but a full write up is here if you want to read it.

Jenkinson, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Coquelin also featured – as did Santos and Mannone. The Italian didn’t manage to keep a clean sheet as West Brom held the reserves to a 1-1 scoreline.

Talking of goalkeepers, what is Mannone still doing at Arsenal? Wojciech Szczesny has been talking about his life at the club:

Ever since I signed for this club, I’ve become an Arsenal fan, It feels like it’s more than me just playing and doing my best on a Saturday afternoon. I feel like I have a much bigger part to play at this club. It means that little bit more to me.

I think there’s a lot of players in this team that are genuine Gooners. You’ve got people like Carl Jenkinson, there’s Jack Wilshere, Emmanuel Frimpong – a lot of young players who really feel it’s the biggest honour they could have, to play for this club.

I think that’s very important for the future.

I think I improve with every single game, I get the experience that is needed for a young keeper, so it’s important for me to play as many games as possible.

I don’t think about playing for any other club. I see my future at Arsenal Football Club. I committed to coming here at the age of 16, not to then leave at the age of 24. That’s not how it works for me. I think coming over to England at the age of 16 was the most important decision of my life and probably the best one, to date.

Szczesny ‘thinks’ a lot doesn’t he. ;)

Can’t believe he is just twelve games away from reaching his 100th for our club. A long way to go to match David Seaman’s Club record of 564 appearances in goal but he’s still only 22 years old so there’s plenty of time ahead for him.

He mentioned Carl Jenkison, another player who surely has a fantastic future ahead of him with us. A player born and bred with red and white running through his veins. Many think he should be playing at right back now with Sagna off his game but reports in The Sun this morning suggest that he could be about to go out on loan for a while.

Crystal Palace are reported to want him there but Jenks wants to stay in the Premier League…

Who could blame him.

That’s it for today, have a good one…..

100 Up for Walcott if he plays & Rugby playing side Swansea head to London!

December 1, 2012

No other place to start really, other than the BSM pre-match march which begins at 1.30pm at the Bear Roundabout’ outside The Armoury.

For anyone who still doesn’t know what it’s all about, there is a link here.

We all have our own view about whether it’s right or wrong to be airing the clubs dirty laundry in public, or to give more fuel to the media to knock us with etc but as long as the march is kept within law, fans have every right to make their feelings heard.

Actually, make that feelings voiced, I doubt Stan Kroenke will hear anything that is said today…..

Onto the game against Swansea.

Arsene Wenger believes that the run of fixtures between now and the end of the year and says:

We will come back.

Now we have six games, four at home, and if we do well in this block I think we have a chance to come back. But of course it is vital for us to do well in these games.

He is right of course, it is vital and not just for the benefit of securing Champions League football!

Injury news:

Team news

Arsenal: Sagna (foot), Fabianski (ankle), Santos (abdominal), Koscielny (thigh), Diaby (thigh)

Some reports suggest a late fitness test for Sagna will determine whether he is to play or not and the same for Theo Walcott, but there is nothing on the official site to confirm that. If Walcott does play today, it’s his 100th in an Arsenal shirt.

Wenger has praised Thomas Vermaelen after his performance against Everton: to become Arsenal’s rock again after a star turn against Everton.

It was certainly his best game since the start of the season in this position.

That will boost his confidence and hopefully get out of his mind what happened before when he was not completely confident.

He was physically sharp, confident, calm and important for us.

Good, because we need his ‘calmness’ at the back, no more silly gifts to the opposition and our captain has had his fair share of those.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has been preparing for today’s game by getting his side to play football with a rugby ball. What that is all about I don’t know but they certainly won’t be playing a ‘rugby style’ game today, they don’t play that way.

Hopefully Wenger has looked at the way they play and worked out who and how to play them and nullify anything they have to offer.

We play the big man up front so we  need to start supplying him a lot more than we have been doing of late. We play with two front wide men, so use them and stop trying to play everything through the middle.

If it’s not working, Wenger needs to change things around or at least make the substitutions earlier than he currently does, give those coming on a chance to change the game.

We need to find some consistency, stability, pace and with it, a string of victories with much much better team performances and the only way we will get that is through the players and their ‘leader’.

Possession alone doesn’t win games but the right tactics, the right mindset and the right attitude and commitment does!

And we need all of those things from now until May!

That’s it for another day……

Gazidis drops Arsene Wenger right in it! Expect changes for today’s fixture…..

November 24, 2012

Better times ahead??

Yesterday the news broke that Arsenal football club had signed a new £150m deal with the Emirates airline, extending its shirt sponsorship to 2019. The naming rights to the stadium have also been extended to 2028 as part of the deal.

This will bring in £30m a season to the club and the deal is said to be one of the biggest in footballing world!

Ivan Gazidis has been talking about how wonderful this deal is and what it brings to the Arsenal table etc, click here  to read it all.

But the most interesting comment he made was this:

This deal is all about football.

It is all about giving us the resources to be able to invest in what we put on to the pitch for our fans. The manager will have more resources available.

We kept some powder dry in the summer, so we do have the ability to make a move or two in the January window, but that will be based as always on what Arsene Wenger believes is available in the window and the kind of moves he thinks might help us on the pitch.

So, there we have it from the clubs Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis. Arsene Wenger is the one who decides on whether or not we spend money and how much we spend.

Onto today’s match, a 5.30pm kick off against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have striker Darren Bent back which isn’t good news for us but missing are Joe Bennett, Chris Herd, Charles N’Zogbia and Richard Dunne.

Joining Diaby, Fabianski and Rosicky on the injury list is Theo Walcott and Andre Santos but after his little cameo in midweek, Gervinho is available for selection, as is Kieran Gibbs.

On the team selection for today, Wenger has said:

There are no major injuries, a few tired legs and that will all be assessed on Friday, I have not decided what I will do yet. I have time and we’ll see who is available, who is a bit less available, who is a bit tired and who has some knocks and bruises but there is nothing major.

I think from that comment, we can expect to see one or two changes from the side that started midweek. Gibbs will no doubt slot in at left back and Gervinho could also start. After that I haven’t a clue. Arteta must surely need a break but who can replace him? The same can be said about Cazorla.

But Wenger can’t afford make too many changes, we all know what that does to the team….

Head-to-head

Aston Villa haven’t beaten us at Villa park in 13 attempts since coming from two goals down to win 3-2 in December 1998 (D6, L7).

We have lost only two of our subsequent 27 league meetings with Villa. Last season we overturned a 2-0 deficit in the FA Cup fourth round beat Villa 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium.

But we shouldn’t and must not be fooled by history, we have seen us slip up against lower positioned league sides too often, Norwich this season being the most recent. This game will be another tough one IF any one of our players of the manager think it’s won before we kick off.

Paul Lambert, who will be in the stands doesn’t care about the history of results between the two clubs either:

It’s Arsenal but we’re at home so we’re going to go for it. We haven’t beaten them here since 1998 so it just shows how hard it’s going to be.

I can’t influence what’s happened in years gone by but I can influence what goes on now.

Be assured though, if we turn up with only half a mind of the job in hand, Villa will register a home win and any confidence we built up last weekend and midweek will be gone again.

Wenger target is to get into the top four by Christmas and push on from there so he needs to make sure his players are ready to make that happen by carrying on from where we left off last weekend.

That’s it for another day…..

Wenger confirms a striker could join in January. Huntelaar linked as are Adidas….

November 23, 2012

Morning folks,

A few days ago, Arsene Wenger set us all off moaning when he hinted that Thierry Henry would be the answer to all our prayers in January, well, that’s if we were all crying out for one in the striker department of course.

Since then though, Arsene has kind of backtracked.

I just spoke about that because people asked me, I said I don’t rule it out because he’s in good shape but I haven’t made up my mind yet. I haven’t spoken to Thierry about it. I just answered a question honestly that I have not completely decided how I will sort it out in my head.

We maybe looking at a striker because Gervinho is going to the Africa Cup of Nations.

I know we have all heard the ‘we maybe looking at’ lines many times over from the manager and I seriously doubt that we should take this very seriously. Wenger seldom speaks the truth when if comes to transfers and answering questions from the media.

Who knows though, maybe he’ll shock us and sign Huntelaar?

Wenger has also been talking about the weak and wounded.

Santos is out for another ten days and Walcott remains sidelined for Aston Villa but could be ok by the time we travel to Everton a few days later. 10 days with an abdominal strain. Oxlade-Chamberlain looks alright which is bizarre as I didn’t even know he was injured…

Abou Diaby – if all goes well, he will be back in three to four years weeks. Part of me will be glad to see him back, but there is another part which hopes he doesn’t return to full fitness until February, IF, that means Wenger will finally stop relying on our crock and sign a defence minded midfielder in January. Arteta cannot play every fixture this season!

Tomas Rosicky is back in training and should be fit and ready to link up with the rest of the squad on Monday.

The return of Rosicky is a huge boost. Last year from January to the end of the season he was on fire, he’d signed a new contract and earned every penny of it. he really was good and if he comes back and finds that same kind of form, his return is massive.

Apparently he had suffered a similar injury to Scott Parker and they had operations at the same time. Funny enough, Parker is due back very soon, so this is one time we can’t knock our medical staff..

Today we are meant to hear something from the club in relation to a new kit deal and it’s suspected that Nike will be Gonners and Adidas will be the new supplier. Lets hope they come up with some decent shirt designs if this turns out to be true.

Finally, former Holland striker Erik Meijer has added fuel to the ‘Huntelaar to Arsenal’ speculation by insisting that we are currently in the driving seat for his compatriot’s signature.

According to the information I have, Huntelaar will be gone in the winter

Asked where the ex-Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan forward was going, Meijer replied:

Arsenal FC are the favourites to land him.

Now that would be nice eh?

That’s it for another day, Aston Villa tomorrow, another must win for us….

Thinking the Unthinkable….

October 26, 2012

No matter how much we all love and respect Arsene Wenger and believe that he is a gentleman and no matter how grateful we are to him for turning the club around when he first came, instigating the move to the Emirates and for buying some wonderful players for us to enjoy playing the best football in England, it seems quite apparent to me that something is wrong at our club.

Yes, something is broken.

Why do I believe this?

Well, it is largely the evidence of my own eyes over the past several seasons.

I can feel it already. You are coming up with all the caveats that have surrounded Wenger’s recent years. The consistent top 4 finishes, the financial draining effect of the new stadium, the rise of the sugar daddy clubs, the appalling luck with injuries. Yes, I agree 100%.

They have all had a massive effect on Arsenal Football Club and its ability to compete at the highest level. I also contend that no other manager could have kept Arsenal in the CL for so long under such restraints. He has done incredible things for us all.

The lack of trophies can be attributed to many of these, except of course the ridiculous loss to Birmingham in Carling Cup final a couple of seasons ago. Laying, buried in the atrocious experience of that rainy day, there was a burning question that is still unanswered. Why did we lose that game? How on earth did we lose against a very, very poor team lead by surely one of the least inspiring managers ever? If you think it was Koscielny’s mistake alone that cost us that game, then that’s up to you.

I believe it was very typical of Wenger’s Arsenal of the past several seasons when faced with a big game. But that is past and not worth dwelling on at this moment in time as it’s the present and the future that concern me.

Wenger has been a very great manager for Arsenal and I have said before that one of his greatest tricks is downgrading expectations by convincing so many fans that we are paupers and that Chelsea and Manchester City are the big bad wolf with no morality or sense of fair play.

In some ways he is right of course. There are no financial restraints at those clubs as we have seen.

This January, in complete defiance of Financial Fair Play, I can see both of them blowing us out of the water with massive transfer fees and wages paid to players that are in fact sorely needed at our own club. But we cannot afford them. We know this because we operate the self-sustaining financial model that gives us both the moral high ground and players like Chamakh and Gervinho plus several others who should be nowhere near Arsenal Football Club because they are not good enough. Not their fault at all. Just not good enough to help take us where we ought to be heading.

We can all debate who is and who isn’t good enough can’t we. It’s a fun after dinner chat but it doesn’t really address the big question as to whether Wenger has still got it in him to win the CL or the PL ?

Has he? What do you think?

It’s not that easy to answer in a cool detached way as one always gets this nagging feeling of disloyalty and even if you don’t feel that, there are plenty of bloggers, including a swathe of complete idiots, who will remind you of your treachery and unspoken oath of loyalty in a heartbeat, as if you had forgotten. They will be along a little later.

So it hurts to even have to think about Arsenal without Wenger because it’s human nature to resist change and we know what to expect from him. And there’s all that stuff he’s done for us.

But, what about the board?

How responsible are they for the club’s excruciating but inexorable move backwards over the past few years – and how can this be turned round? The nature of Stan’s ownership, like most other things at the club, is shrouded in a fog of mystery and disinformation, seemingly designed to confuse. That Kroenke loves the self-sustaining model is certain. The problem is that he isn’t rich enough to take the handbrake off, smell the coffee and release ample funds for new and better players when the opportunity arises and he doesn’t want to put his hand in his own pocket. That’s for sure. Arsenal are a business asset to him. We feel somewhat differently.

There is also the thorny issue as to whether Wenger would actually spend the really big money on a player.

It appears that he has entrenched egalitarian views about running a football club where no players earn vastly more than others. This, in his noble philosophy, avoids tensions and resentments building up. Thus we see a very promising, very young player like Oxlade-Chamberlain given a massive hike in wages that coincides perfectly with a loss of form and Wenger’s reluctance to play him in front of Gervinho. I haven’t really worked that one out yet.

It also results in a build-up of deadwood, unwilling to move elsewhere and take a pay cut.

While on the subject I really cannot avoid the goalkeeping situation. If ever a manager had a blind spot it must surely be Wenger and goalkeepers.

For a club like Arsenal to be in their current situation is not just unfortunate, it is an absolute disgrace. We had to put up with Almunia for years when everybody knew he wasn’t good enough. Wenger said he was, we said he wasn’t and we were proved right.

Arsene was wrong. Who can possibly say otherwise?

It cost us and now we are in this position? Why is it that Wenger won’t buy a World-class goalkeeper?

Why?

He lauds Lloris but wouldn’t buy him. He bought Shaaban, Manninger, Almunia, Fabianski and God knows who else and they were and are not good enough. But all were cheap. Spot the common denominator?

Arguably the most important position in the side and he won’t buy a decent ‘keeper. Why?

The answer is obvious. He thinks that our current goalkeepers are fine. We have the worst goalkeepers in the PL purely because he won’t buy a world class one or even a very good one who could save us several points a year. What other rational explanation is there?

Yes, our first choice might be great in a few years but, as he has proved recently, he is not great now and that’s what counts. This alone is ample reason to be very worried about where Arsene is leading this club. It just makes no sense at all and when things don’t make sense questions must surely and rightly be asked.

There are of course many, many other things that also do not make sense. But, Arsene is a safe pair of hands who turns a profit every year, so I doubt we will see any changes for a while, barring a catastrophic season or two of underachievement. Even then I imagine Kroenke will be reluctant to ask Arsene to step aside.

Everything seems blacker when you lose to a side like Norwich. People got carried away with the away win to an awful Liverpool team, the draw away to Man City and a 3-1 win at newly promoted West Ham. After his “Moment of truth” spiel this week, the players let him down. He sat and watched as they played absolute dross, the goalkeeping fiasco bit him in the arse and he couldn’t motivate them to anything in the second half either. Arsenal are confusing and irritating at the same time.

Even with Cazorla, Podolski, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Arteta et al in place, Wenger sat there and watched, ashen-faced as the team and club were humiliated.

Many people are scared of Wenger going because of the alternatives, but let me leave you with a bit of blue sky thinking that may or may not appeal.

Kroenke decides that it’s time to sell as he sees the slow decline of Arsenal reflected as a reduction in the share price – and Kroenke is all about the bottom line. Usmanov takes over and declares that he wants to turn Arsenal into one of the biggest and best clubs in the world. He lets everyone know that if a world-class player becomes available in a position where the manager thinks we are short then we have the financial clout to compete with anyone. Arsene finds this all rather vulgar, says he still believes in Chamakh and is offered Hill-Wood’s old position as chairman. He accepts. Is that bit too far fetched for you?

It is me.

Usmanov states that he wants to own an extremely ambitious club and not one that is content to tread water. He offers Guardiola a 5 year contract. Guardiola accepts and the first thing he does is to buy a decent goalkeeper. He pays off the deadwood and tells them to sod off.

Ok. There are no guarantees as to success but it would certainly be an exciting ride where defeat to Norwich would not be meekly tolerated and players would not hold the club to ransom over contracts. Players would want to become part of the revolution. The player/club dynamic would change completely. You don’t pull your weight – you are out.

A dream perhaps – and dreams seldom come true.

But one thing is certain. If the club continue to slip away, something will have to be done one way or the other.

Kagawa bid accepted? Money over Trophies seems to be way forward…….

Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were both named in the England squad for the Euros yesterday, giving English Arsenal fans a reason to watch what is otherwise, a very old and boring team.

The Sun report that ‘tense and tetchy’ talks with Robin van Persie broke down yesterday with no agreement being found by the end of them. Where they get this information, no-one knows but our captain does write a column for the newspaper so maybe they get fed a bit of gossip, then again, they could just be making it all up!

According to the Twitter gossip last night, we have had a bid for Shinji Kagawa accepted by Borussia Dortmund, now it’s down to the player to decide where he wants to go and M’Vila will decide his future this weekend as the French league closes.

Not much other transfer gossip but it’s looking highly likely we will miss out on Jan Vertonghen as he seems set to join the neighbours, a big miss there.

Talking of defenders and defending:

Standing among a few thousand Gooners at The Hawthorns, watching Arsenal stagger over the finishing line brought back all those old misgivings I had at the beginning of this season and again in the New Year…

We all thought that Arsene Wenger and his coaches had worked on our defence and ironed out all those defensive frailties and weaknesses, but there they were again in all their glory or gory.

Just when we needed them the least.

3rd spot had seemed in the bag, then 3 points from a possible 12 against Wigan, Chelsea, Stoke and Norwich threw everything into the melting pot again.

No Arteta, no wins, could it really be as simple as that???

Well football is rarely that simple and the revelation that Wojciech Sir Chesney needed pain-killing injections to play over this period, certainly suggested some mitigating circumstances for the sudden uncertainty in our defence.

The loss of Theo Walcott also saw us without our 2nd most prolific goalscorer, whilst Robin’s goals output went into hibernation.

Well, we made it, much to the chagrin of all the know-nothing idiots in the Press and on TV.

It was also interesting to see the prize-money differentials on the final placings in the EPL…

For finishing 3rd, Arsenal earned £14.4 million.

Chelsea finished 6th, won the FA Cup and earned £12 million from their position in the EPL.

Liverpool finished 8th, won the League Cup and earned £10.4 million.

Both clubs were strongly tipped by the journo and ex-footballer ‘experts’, to finish in the top-four!

Not withstanding Chelsea’s Champions League final, I wouldn’t swap Arsenal’s 3rd place finish with either of England’s Europa Cup candidates…

Yes, I want silverware, but  want a top-four finish AND silverware.

Not instead of!

This is obviously a sentiment shared by the owners at Liverpool as King Kenny’s reign came to an end yesterday, they of course had won the Carling Cup and narrowly missed out on an FA Cup medal and trophy! Should Chelsea lose the Champions League final this Saturday, will an FA Cup final trophy and medal be enough to convince Roman to stand by Di Matteo?

I suspect not as they too will not be participating in the Champions League next season.

Winning trophies and medals are what every club should be striving for but securing a place in Europe’s finest competition seems to be what most clubs value the greatest.

Are we not living proof of just that?

Vertonghen deal done? Today is about ‘Who wants it more’…..

April 8, 2012

Morning Gooners,

Happy Easter to you all….

Big one today against Manchester City, a side which many are calling them the team from Abu Dhabi but I like to look at it differently. Just because a team has rich financial backers who are not afraid to put their money where their mouths are, that shouldn’t be a reason to disrespect them.

We have rich owners, one Russian and one American, but sadly they have kept their hands in their pockets.

That is not the only similarity we have with City, eight of our ex players are now involved with their rolling machine, Gael Clichy,  Sami Nasri, Adebayor although out on loan at the moment and Kolo Toure who warms their bench and do they still have Stuart Taylor on their books?

Behind the scenes they also have Brian Marwood, Patrick Vieira, Brian Kidd and David Platt!

Amazing really that they haven’t got an ex Arsenal Manager in charge isn’t it??

Robin & Thomas - Get in......

So it’s Arsenal first 11 against Arsenals want away’s, but in reality this is a must win game, both teams will be up for this game and so they should be!

The stories in the newspapers suggest that Manchester City are worried about this game, maybe that’s because there is so much riding on it, and I wouldn’t have thought they are relishing playing us in the form we have been in recently.

City at the moment are in 2nd place, still in with a shout of the League title, we sit 4th behind the Spuds after their lucky draw yesterday.

Half an hour before our game starts, the Manchester United result will be known and that will no doubt have an effect on City but it shouldn’t on us! I find it strange that in these kind of situations, United often play their game first just to raise the pressure that little bit more, which is unfair in my opinion but then we know who the FA favour don’t we?

Anyway, back to today…

The last time we welcomed City to the Emirates in the league, they set themselves up for a draw. They were negative and stifled the game with their dogged defensive tactics but today, and with what’s at stake, I think we can expect a very different approach from the opposition.

This will be a more open game and both keepers and defence will have to be on their toes as they could be very busy.

Mancini must believe his job depends on a win today as a loss would no doubt make his bosses less than happy, they have had a few managers and if you’re not successful you are gone, so he’s under pressure as well as the players.

Who really cares what happens to City anyway, all we need to be concentrating on is us, we have to want this win more than they do!

No stats about us…..

No stats about them either, today is like a cup game, every game until the end of the season will be the same too, it’s do or lose Champions League football….

Forget the Arsenal horror show of last weekend, let’s get back to playing the way we all know we can. We are at home, on our own finely grown, watered and trimmed green grass which will be ready to grace our fine football.

Let’s get back to doing what we have all seen in the last couple of months, the spirit and passion we showed against the Swampies, the grit at Anfield, the absolute desire and commitment that we saw against Newcastle.

Way to go Tomas......

Add all that to the flair we witnessed when we absolutely battered AC Milan at The Emirates and we can beat the side we face today with ease.

Let’s just go out there and do what we did to Ibrah and his old cronies….
