We are the worst team… says old hero!! Chesney, Theo and Kos all start tonight.

Following our fine win at the weekend it’s good to listen to a real ‘Mr Arsenal’ talk about his old club and speak from his heart. Ray Parlour isn’t one of those ex-players who have an axe to grind, nor does he feel the need to ever praise us up when we all know things are not good. He reckons that we are the worst team to play against when a side is down to ten men.

For anyone who doesn’t know our very own ‘Romford Pele’, take a peep at the ‘ It’s only Ray Parlour’ day.

Oh to have him back twenty years younger…

But following our win, he tells it as he see’s it and he’s pretty much spot on in my opinion.

It was a brilliant performance, they passed the ball very well and I know City had a man sent off early in the game, but Arsenal were excellent and Arsene Wenger must have been delighted. I think Arsenal are the worst team to go down to 10 men against because they move so well. You really need 10 outfield players on the pitch to be able to compete with them.

It was always going to be very difficult for Man City after that but you’ve still got to go and score the goals and Arsenal scored three great ones through Nasri, Song and Bendtner, who came back and looked very sharp. It was a really pleasing performance for all Arsenal supporters.

On Fabianski –

He’s playing with a lot more confidence since he saved that penalty against Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League. The save from Adebayor was brilliant and I think he’s learning the game. I know he’s had his mistakes but he’s playing a lot better than Almunia at the moment and I think when Almunia gets fit Fabianski deserves to keep his position.

But he knows as we all do that for all Arsene Wenger and the club are doing behind the scenes to ensure we are a well run club, it’s also important to start winning something. He believes with a fully fit squad we could be in a great position to do that this season.

They’ve got a very good squad this year that can challenge Chelsea and with Walcott back and Vermaelen hopefully fit in a few weeks, I’m very optimistic. It’s vital that they try to win something this season. I was really pleased that Wenger put out a strong team against Tottenham in the Carling Cup and they’ve got every opportunity to win that. Wenger’s done a wonderful job with the training ground, and he runs the club the right way, but what the fans really want is trophies.

He’ right about the Carling Cup, we all hoped for a strong side to face the Tiny Totts and we got what we hoped for, tonight we all want the same, I’m sure. With the Chavs, Northern Chavs, Liverpool all out of the competition, this really is one of our best chances yet to win the Carling Cup.

This is what it means, just look at Lansbury and Gibbs….

Tonight though will be no walk over, can’t see it being a high scoring romp to victory for us but if we show the spirit and determination we showed on Sunday we can win. St James Park isn’t a friendly place to go, the home fans will be right behind their team.

Since Newcastle knocked out the Chavs, they have had a dip in form, I suspect a lot of that is to do with losing Ben Arfa through injury and the Andy Carroll antics off field.  They have lost in the league to Stoke and Manchester City and were held at home 2-2 with Wigan. On Saturday though they beat West Ham away so a bit of confidence could be creeping back into the side.

Confidence should be with us though too, we won well in the Champions League, picked up a great result at the weekend and should be up for this game tonight.

Tonight is another big test for Arsene Wenger and his team selection should tell us all just how seriously he is taking this competition. He has confirmed that Chesney, Kos and Walcott will all start and no doubt Gibbs will come in for Clichy. Wenger has been ‘bigging up’  JET on the Arsenal website so no doubt he will start too. Chamakh needs a rest so I fully expect Nikki B to step in for him and I think  Lansbury  deserves another start.  It’s anyones guess who starts really, I just hope it’s a side that can win! I also hope that we see a very strong bench, we did at the Tiny Totts, we need one tonight too.

So come on Arsene, do it again, play a strong side tonight, get us into the next round and then we will start to believe that you really want a trophy this season as much as we fans do.

You say you do, now prove you do!

Theo to wreck havoc in the Castle defence, Nikky Pinkboots to nick a few. Beware of Andy Carroll though, the lad’s good especially with headers so we need to defend well against set-pieces…

It was interesting to see real madrid being unable to score against a segunda B side in form of Real murcia despite fielding the likes of CR7 and Benzema.Silvestre also had a shocker last night for Bremen against Bayern.he almost scored an own goal which required his goalie to make an acrobatic save.

But i think it is amazing how just winning any cup is important this season , i only wished we had fielded Henry and others when we played Chelsea in the Carling Cup final.

Henry , Gallas and co begged Wenger but he refused , maybe we would still have Henry now (may not now but at least last 3years)

I guess Wenger knew i fumbled that opportunity to lift that Cup because 2005 till now is 5years that is too long by our standard.

We need to beat Newcastle silly, really. They will play the Chelsea style so, our defenders has to be carful.

morning all. strong side, and into the league cup quarterfinals please…

rico, i found your reflection on what might have been if arsene had selected a stronger side for the 07 league cup final against chelsea. like you, i understand his reasons for picking a predominantly young side, but hindsight tells me that we would have been better served by fielding a more balanced sight, with some more experienced side. i think kolo was captain on the day, but the most of the other players were youths. perhaps our full-strength side would not have won, but i think they would have had a good chance, considering how much trouble our kids gave that full-strength chelsea side. unfortunately, we have not gotten close since then. here is hoping this will be the year…

  51. rico

Hindsight, yes, i wish we would have played a more balanced side….

  52. rico

  54. oliver

rico, i am not a big flamini guy – i see him as a fringe player who had a great contract year. i understand that many big him up, which i have no problem with – he did have an excellent season when he finally became a starter. as far as the cl final in paris, he was not even a first-team regular then, and cashley, hate him as we do, was an established, world-class left back. if flamini had a problem with being left out of the cl final, then i have no use for him.

  55. K-TR7

    October 27, 2010 at 1:34pm

Oliver you have a point.this time we are selecting a stronger side from the off.its funny to listen to the media squirm tha Aw is desperate to win the mickey mouse cup by playing the first team while in reality most of our first team are CC graduates.

  56. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 1:39pm

k, i don’t pay much attention to that. media want it both ways: they rip arsene for playing the kids in previous years, and now they are piling on him because he is selecting stronger teams. so which one is it?

i think arsene’s previous model of predominantly youth sides in the cups was the wrong way to go. i have no problem with giving opportunities to our best and brightest, as well as those fringe first-teamers that need match action. but packing the side with kids – some of which we knew would never become first team regulars for us – was self-defeating, and did nothing to instill a winning culture at this club. i hope to never see those overly youthful sides again – let them develop in the youth squads, and pick strong squads for the cups.

  57. K-TR7

    October 27, 2010 at 1:42pm

Aw has created a pool of players that are first team players despite them being very young.players like bendtner, gibbs, ramsey, theo…are very experienced and they can easily win the tournament.the chavs tried to copy this format with McEachran,Van anholt, bruma…but failed because they don’t have the experience our young players have.

  58. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 1:46pm

my problem is that he packed these cup sides with too many young players who were not ready. if we had balanced the sides better, perhaps we would have already won one of these cups. at least he seems to be doing it now. using the players that you just mentioned works because they all have lots of first-team regulars. arsene has not always done that, but hopefully he will stick to doing it now.

  59. K-TR7

    October 27, 2010 at 1:51pm

Oliver on the flip side some of those players had their growths accelerated by being thrown in the deep end.lets hope that now we have a wide pool of players that Aw will never field an entire youth side.

  60. SD-London

    October 27, 2010 at 1:54pm

Wenger has done well because if you add Song, Denilson ,Wilshire to that list he has really done the old fashion football process in a money crazy world of modern football.

Dont be shy to add Fabregas to that list he groomed them all from the youth side.

If this set wins just one Trophy, it will be a great achievement that the Chavs , North Chavs(they need a different name) or the Manures will bow in shame.

  61. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 2:00pm

one of my points is that the process was beneficial for some, specifically those who were ready for the jump. my problem, again, is that arsene put too many young players in these sides, and not enough experience. these games were certainly benficial for those who are in our first team. but they were not beneficial for instilling a winning culture in this team. my main point is that arsene could have balanced these sides better, with more experience and less youth. those ready to blossom would still do so, playing alongside experienced first-team squad members. there will always be a need to prioritize and rest certain players for upcoming matches, but we still had plenty of experienced first team squad players who could have filled the void. i know it is hindsight, but if we had more of a balanced lineup in previous cup competitions, we may have won one of them between the 05 FA Cup and now.

  62. K-TR7

    October 27, 2010 at 2:04pm

Oliver i agree.Imagine jack lifting the trophy at Wembley in his first full season?no matter how small the cup is jack will be hungrier for more when we play in the other competitions.this will happen to the whole squad developing a winning mentality.

KT/oliver, you are right, he’s playing similar players, they are just a lot older than when Arsene started to field a young side, most of whom are in the first team squad now…

the media need to realise that that is why clubs have a squad… i don’t think they will ever put theirs hands up and pat us on the back, but it’s funny how they don’t have too much to say about the other ‘big’ clubs who have since followed in our footsteps….

clubs are wanting to to it the wenger way, you don’t see us doing it the ‘fat sam or old red nose way’ 😉

  67. rico

    October 27, 2010 at 2:17pm

  69. K-TR7

At spurs we fielded a younger side than they did but we made them chase shadows for 120 minutes.players like denilson have more cl experiencd than the entire spuds squad despite his birth certificate showing he is 22.cesc is 23 but is heading towards 300 games for us.thats why saying we should buy ‘experienced’ players like palacios while at wigan who may be older but less experienced than our cc midfield doesn’t make sense.

Rico you seem to have a personal vendetta against a future Ballon d’Or nominee…we bossed the game at the bridge with a midfield of Song(23),diaby(24) and jack(18) all CC graduates.Aw has done a good job with our young guns and should be commended.

    Hi Oliver, SD,

Good comments. I too think Vela must play and I am sure he will. I thought he would be given a run in the team but his career with us has been very stop start.

This is partly because he always seems to be jetting off to far away places with Mexico, when he hasn’t lost his Passport, or he is injured. Things must change or it is bye bye Vela.

I’m an accountant KT, but your sticky fingers for stats and detailed info on European teams is very impressive and more than simply mathematics or accountancy. :-)

Rico, did I say I teased you? Heaven forfend, moi? Surely not! :-)

Rico and many others seem to have a thing about Diaby. He cannot be described as inexperienced as apart from Arsenal, he has played internationally for France and often been their best player.

Last week both Arshavin and Theo described Diaby as the most technically gifted player at the club. Praise indeed.

Oliver, thanks for not mentioning the Yankees last week, I just want to forget the disappointment! :-(

My big worry for tonight is both their big forwards dominating in the air.

Whoever plays at CB for us needs to be focussed.

I am not surprised about your profession! :-)

I have lost count of the number of engineers that I have known over the years who became brilliant accountants.

Oddly enough, I have also known three accountants who buggered off and became brilliant lawyers. Go figure! :-)

Red Arse, that was why i fear the Tiny Toons might adopt a Chelsea style of playing.

I just want us to meet Chelsea and beat them in that their stupid and shameful tactics of theirs they usually use against us.

  86. Red Arse

    Not in my experience SD.

“Mathematical” engineers convert to accountants pretty easily, and there is a lot more money in accountancy! :-)

RA I done some accounts too.song has been criticised for being songinho but i now see what Aw is trying to do.Aw is trying to revolve how we play by ensuring all our midfielders can attack and defend.Total football requires the team attack and defend as a unit.this requires all players being comfortable in performing the above duties.what Aw is trying to do is to pressure the opponents and win the ball back as soon as possible and high up the pitch.song has been tasked with this role but it requires his midfield partners to cover for him.when song wins the ball back,he has now learnt how to use it which has been showed by his 3 goals.if he doesn’t know how to use it,he would have slowed our play down waiting for cesc.mikel is relatively poor in terms of goals and thats why Aw wants song to become a complete midfielder.this however requires him to have an understanding with his midfield partners on who should sit/attack and thats why he works so well with denilson.it also helps in rotational fouling as we saw in the weekend with all our midfielders picking yellows but no red since they kept interchanging.

  88. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 3:31pm

and my profession is, uh…..well, lets just leave it at that…

i would say quietly confident. i think most of the optimism is arsene assertion we will “go for it” in the cup competitions…which, by the way, is admission winning was not the priority in previous seasons. newcastle have their derby on this weekend, and i think hughton has already said that he will switch his side up. however – and i think rico pointed this out yesterday – they went to stamford bridge with a changed side and came away with a win.

  89. Red Arse

    October 27, 2010 at 3:32pm

You are probably right KT, and I love your “rotational fouling” theory.

Perhaps we are becoming more “professional” in our approach.

Apparently, the reason Song dyed his hair is because his wife told him to drop the dreadlocks and change his appearnce. Women eh? :-) (Just as well Rico is not here). :-)

Newcastle are a very up and down side. Sometimes rubbish, but capable of causing a lot of trouble if they hit their sweetspot.

(Sshh, Oliver, we all know your profession is as a C.I.A. agent or a journalist!) :-)

  91. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 3:39pm

ra, i think we will be fine tonight. it will not be easy, but i think we will get the job done…

wrong on both counts – not bad efforts, however…we will just leave it at that.

  92. SD-London

    October 27, 2010 at 3:41pm

    Oliver (Journalist!)

If The Toons should try and use a less experienced side , we will just walk all over them , trash them with goals and daze them with 85% possession.

But i trust the coach he dare not risk that against us.

  93. K-TR7

    October 27, 2010 at 3:41pm

Our current system is similar to the CL winning christmas tree formation employed by Ancelotti in Milan.he played kaka as a trequartista/cesc role, gatusso in song’s current role and pirlo the deepest which is where denilson/jack play.gatusso harried while pirlo swept in behind.as you know pirlo is a sublime passer of the ball which meant they would build attacks faster making them absolutely lethal in transitions.jack/denilson currently do what pirlo did for milan.RA you watch madrid so you’ll notice khedira plays infront of Alonso as he harries the opponents while Alonso sweeps in behind.its a very effective tactic with the right balance.Song had 8 tackles in the city game which was the highest.this prevented city from mastering any attacks from deep.they tried hoofing it to ade/tevez which couldn’t work because our cbs would win the aerial tussle with tevez and catch ade offside as we pressed them into their own half.

  94. Red Arse

    October 27, 2010 at 3:47pm

It does seem to be a Mourhino tactic, and very effective. Khedira disrupts and any “loose” balls find Alonso who is the smooth playmaker.

Chelsea play like that too, I think.

  95. oliver

    October 27, 2010 at 3:48pm

    sd, not a journalist, sorry…

i think hughton is not so worried about us. meaning he will put out the side that best fits his needs. and he has publicly said that his priority is have his best players fit and ready for the derby with the mackems. he has also stated that premiership survival is newcastle’s top priority for the season. i think he will try and win tonight and do his best in all competitions, but will be pragmatic enough not to weaken newcastle’s survival chances.

So (ignoring the complex analysis) Wenger has revolutionized the way we play and it is working and the palyers seems to be enjoying it.

Therefore something great is about to happen like the boss wenger said last week.

We have a great coach i guess.

i dont think Song is playing Essien role though.

i think Song is playing a WegeredSong :) role right now and he is so happy that i am happy.

Song scoring 4 goals is one of the surprises to come this season.
Just watch how he will use Ebue towards the second half of the season. :) :) :)

SD, I love Eboue for his enthusiasm and personality. I also love his shilful dribbling at speed, he mesmerises the opposition.

Trouble is, he spoils great play when he “arrives”, he just does not seem to know what to do with the ball.

He gets dispossessed or gives away a poor pass and suddenly it is helter skelter back trying to cover the defence. :-)

    4-0, and i was worried…
